How To Set Up A Lock Out Timer For Windows 7
Jul 19, 2011
I need a timer on my computer that will lock users out of the internet for certain lengths of time (Like if the internet would just turn off every 20 minutes and stay off for 20 mins, that would be great!) I googled timers and found one program called "Enuff PC" and on their site they said they will not be updating their product anymore because windows 7 and windows vista now have capabilities to preform the same action..

Me and some friend of mine are organizing a quiz competition in our colony. And so i need to put a timer in every other slide in the powerpoint presentation. I mean in one slide question will be given which will be shown for say 1 minute. then next slide will play which will contain the timer for say 30 sec then again next slide with a question and next slide after that with a timer. I know how to make a slide show with time interval in powerpoint but don't know how to insert the timer. In google search i am geting free timer with the minimum time interval of 1 minute but i need a timer with 30 sec. Is it possible to make?

For some reason, recently, my computer has become very slow after I login. I type my password and start to login and it takes like 30 seconds to see the desktop. Is there a program out there that you would recommend that monitors all processes and applications that start (after login, not necessarily at bootup, if there is a difference)?

I recently reformatted my HP Pavilion p6580t and installed Windows 7 Ultimate on it. For some reason, the sleep timer isn't working. It won't put alseep the monitor, nor computer. If I manually put it to sleep it works, but won't off the timer. The only thing I updated was the graphics driver SP59747 and install TP Link wireless usb network stick on the computer. After installing, the sleep timer isn't working. It did seem to work before installing those 2 items.

My computer is unable to sleep automatically and if i manually set it, it will wake up after 1 hour.
Upon running powercfg -lastwake the system states that a particular process is responsible for setting a wake timer. further checking powercfg -waketimers confirms that there is a process that constantly sets up a wake timer.
Timer set by [PROCESS] DeviceHarddiskVolume1Program FilesIntuitQuickBooks P
oint of Sale 9.0qbpos.exe expires at 10:29:59 PM on 12/22/2010.
This process is set every hour from the running of the program. eg open at 9.29, it expires at 10.29. after 10.29 it will reset and expire at 11.29.
So there is no way I can put it to sleep for more than an hour. Checking task scheduler reveals nothing related. there is a way to permanently block this process from resisting sleep, I do not plan to prevent tasks from waking up Windows altogether, disabling it from power configuration .

I work for a company that needs to send client data to an FTP server on a daily basis, with no intervention by the user. Before Windows 7, it was an easy task as we just supplied some FTP software, script and some timer software that installed itself as a new service. It worked really well. But now I'm in the situation where our clients are getting new PCs with Windows 7 loaded, and due to lack of admin rights/elevation, we're no longer able to install software. Worse still, I can't install the timer software as a service for the same reason, and Task Scheduler also needs Admin rights.I have half a solution which means supplying comms software that can literally be copied into a folder, and my testing has gone well, but I'm stuck with the timer software. Does anyone know of a standalone timer app that I could simply unzip and copy to a folder along with my comms software?

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Sometimes, I start my system and, when it's fully up, click on an app (eg Firefox, Outlook, Word, Excel etc) in the taskbar as normal but sometimes they don't start - the timer shows then, after 5-10 secs, it stops & the app fails to open. None of them will open until I reboot. This seems to suggest a Windows, rather than installed SW, problem. It's happened on and off for some months now so I can't pin it back to some change in the past. How to diagnose - where would I dig out error reports for these events, if at all?

I know there are a bunch of sleep problems out there but I couldn't fine one similar to this after doing a forum search. Running Windows 7 Ultimate. Sleep used to work ok but now when I choose sleep from the start menu, the screen blacks out but the computer doesn't actually go to sleep. The fans, activity lights, hdd lights are all still running. If I move the mouse the screen comes back. However, if I just wait for the sleep timer to kick in then the computer does go to sleep (all fans stop running and all lights go out). I'm not sure what caused this. I use my pc as an HTCP and now when I push the power button on the remote the pc does not go to sleep.

I know a lot of options have to be checked and unchecked to make windows xp secure so I'm wondering if it's the same with 7.
It would be used only to game, surf, or maybe do some photoshop type stuff. I have no use for file sharing or anything like that.

When i walk away from my Windows 7 PC, i'd like to lock the screen for good security and put it to sleep for good energy savings. Doesn't that make sense, at least in some situations? But if you lock it, you can't sleep it, and if you put it to sleep, then you can't lock it.
Probably most people lock it and allow it to go to sleep later after a timeout period. But we could all be greener if there were a way to do both sleep and lock at the same time. win7q has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.

The issues come when I leave the PC overnight, idling, with the monitor physically turned off (I use the power button). When I come back in the morning and turn the monitor back on, there is a black screen and the PC won't wake.I have left the computer idling during the day for many hours with the monitor being in standby (PC turns it off, not me).Interestingly, when the PC "hangs" after the night I can still access stuff over the network, and play some videos on my TV which is DLNA-ed to it. Logs do not show any issues, in fact there is some logging going on all night meaning the PC isn't totally dead. However, I try plugging some USB devices in and out, but it doesn't make that USB recognition noise.
Things I have tried:
- playing around with power settings, ie. disabling USB turn-off, disabling ULPS on my vid card (ultra-low-power-savings mode), changing the screen turn-off times, turning sleep and hybernate/hybrid off
- note it is NOT a taskbar auto-hide issue. If you are having crashing problems after idling (still able to access PC for 10s of seconds before it freezes), be sure to check out information on the auto-hide of the taskbar
Other info:
- I run utorrent overnight As a test, I turned my monitor off (physically) during the day, and came back to a "hung" system. I think this may be the root of the issue but it's still driving me up a wall because it's such a weird problem. I have to keep trouble shooting the issue to be certain. Furthermore, my main concern, and the reason for writing this post, is that I want to make sure this is not some hardware issue that is later going to progressively get worse. To me it doesn't seem like a hardware thing, but maybe there are some experts out there who can shed some light.

I have recently installed windows 7 home premium and never set a password upon installation (it's a home pc and didn't feel the need to - bad call I'm sure!).Anyway...I restarted my pc today and it is now asking for a password. I have no idea what this could be. I tried everything I know...I did not install any new software. I did however install windows updates. Do you have any idea what happened and why it's asking me for a password? Is there some default password? I did a google search for quite a while and found nothing.

When ever i have any type of screen open (i.e. the internet, a game, word, Photoshop, ect.) and i hit the caps lock key, my computer takes me off of the program i was using. It did not exit out of it, its just the same as if you are typing, click on the task bar, then have to re-click on the computers window of the program to continue using it. This is very annoying when it comes to typing long essays.

When I hit Caps Lock in Windows 7 an alert (picture of a padlock in grey) icon appears indicating I have turned it on or off. While the alert is showing no input from the keyboard is accepted. This is frustrating because I usually hit Caps Lock and type immediately, and then find about 6 letters have not been accepted. The speed of the system (laptop) is otherwise OK. Is there a way to reduce the time the alert shows, or turn it off altogether?

I have a dell XPS l{ess then 1 year old} quad core Intel processor plenty of memory and all. that I am trying to upgrade to win 7. The compability manager says I am fing for the upgrade. During the installation the computer seems to be locked up about 3 quarters of the way through. The progress bar is simply stopped. I started the install about 11:00pm and it's now 5:25am. Should it take this long? This is the 2nd time I have tried this and the same thing has happened both times. The only way to abort it to restart the machine and then of course I will have lost all the vista files and updates. any suggestions? Should I just let it keep going

So here are the requirements of what I am looking for.
* I need the computer to boot up and automatically log into windows without entering a password * I need the computer to lock itself at some point to protect the desktop but still allow services to run (not log out)
This PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit edition and is running as a file server. I know I can password protect the login, but then I have to login in order to gain access to its services. I am trying to get around this. I need it to boot up entirely and then at some point lock itself down.

my office has a terminal server and every time I launch it with dual monitors the terminal server windows do not lock at the maximum size. I can move the entire terminal server window up and down and side to side just by moving the mouse...it is irritating and not allowing me to use the computer efficiently.
If I use 1 monitor, the screen locks. The other guys in the office with Windows XP do not have this problem either.

I use two keyboard layouts on my computer--English and Russian. I switch between the two using left Ctrl+Shift. I want to remap my keyboard so that in both keyboard layouts my "caps lock" key does nothing and my "insert" key becomes a caps lock key.
Attached are a couple of screen shots of what I currently have in my registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout.
