View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Win XP SP3 and I plan to upgrade to Windows 7. I currently have two hard disks as one is the system hard disk and the second drive is my data disk (E: Drive). If I upgrade to Windows 7, will I still be able to read the data on the E: drive? If Windows 7 can read the data, would it make sense to back up any files on the system hard disk to the E: drive so I could copy the files back to C: drive after Windows 7 install? All drives are currently NTFS.
View 18 Replies View RelatedI have a triple boot system: XP 32 bit, XP 64 bit, Win7 Pro 64 bit, each on a separate partition on separate hard drives. I can backup each of the XP OS partitions with a program I wrote that basically does a file and folder copy to a folder in a spare partition on one of the hard drives. The copy program I wrote tries to preserve time stamp and short file name info, otherwise, it's just a file and folder copy program. I use windiff to verify after a backup (or restore). For a restore, I can quick format a partition and copy the files back (using the program I wrote).
I tried doing the same with the Win 7 OS partition, backup, quick format, restore, but some of the information (metadata?) is lost. All of the actual data is there, and windiff doesn't show any differences, and Win 7 boots up, but then there are issues. ATI video driver catalyst control center fails to run (don't recall error message). The publisher information for many (or most or all) of the programs is lost, causing User Acess Control dialog box to appear anytime I tried to run a program, which should be Microsoft, but shows up as unknown. Internet Explorer 8 will state that a program has corrupted the default search provider repeatedly (even after selecting one).
So something is different between Win 7 NTFS and Win XP NTFS, or I need to enhance my copy program to copy addtional file information when doing the copies. If I get the time, I'll try a drag and drop from windows explorer in XP to see if that makes any difference. So currently I'm stuck using Win 7 system image backup for the Win 7 OS partition (it also images the C partition which contains the boot files like bootmgr).
Im trying to convert a drive on my laptop from FAT32 to NTFS as recommended by Microsoft baseline security analyzer. When I type in convert E: /fs:ntfs command in the cmd prompt I get a message that I dont have permissions to do so. How, on my own machine do I get permissions or what do I type in to get to root? I know that on Linux machines you type in su to enter password to get to root user but Im not sure how on my own windows machine. I am a 1st year IT student and am learning. I thought I had all the permissions since I am logged into my machine as administrator.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had to use my thumb drive to upload files to a Mac, so I reformatted the drive to FAT32. Now I'm trying to get it back to NTFS so I can use again on my Win 7 machine, but the drive is not even showing up in My Computer.
The Drive shows in Device Manager and in Disk Management, but offers me no option to format.
Well tomorrow I am receiving my SSD. And my external hdd is fat 32 and I can't backup some of my stuff because of the file size limit. I believe I need it to be NTFS but how do I change it from fat32 to NTFS?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had no trouble in the past setting up permissions on a NTFS formatted USB drive using XP. I am able to set everyone to have only read access and myself to have full rights. The process is as follows:
- Remove all from the list except everyone.
- add myself as a user with full control.
- Go to advanced options for everyone and disable write access, and enable read access.
- Deny takes over allow, so that's all good.
- Eject USB everyone's happy .
In Windows 7 this is not the case, after formatting the USB to NTFS and going to permissions, that is where the problems start. At first the only group that has permissions as default is everyone, if I change any of these permissions I get access denied even though I am the owner because I formatted the drive. So I ignore and continue to add myself as full control. I get access denied! I then move on to making it so that everyone has read access but no write access. again access denied! What is the same process ins XP is not the same in 7, why?
It seems every time I make an amend to a permission in 7 is says access denied even though I am the admin and the owner. Tried this also on the hidden admin account and I still have the same problem. My guess is in windows 7 everyone actually means everyone, including admin and myself, so even though adding myself as an additional user it still wont allow, unlike XP where adding a user seems to overwrite everyone.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard drive that was formatted in NTFS on an XP machine not too long ago. It is a 160 GB Western Digital. It has been working great on windows 7 for a couple of weeks. Just today it won't let me access the drive and it is telling me that I will need to format the drive before I can use it. I have so much important data on here. I am really worried about losing it all. Why is this happening?

I have a Gigabyte P55A-UD4P Mb which has a TPM chip.
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate and try to enable bit-locker. It seems to me I am always unable to lock the drive with TPM.
I have follow the standard steps, clear TPM chip in bios, then go to control panel and enable bit-locker, The process takes ownership of TPM, create and back up TPM password. Then generate bit-locker key and store it on USB key. Finally it pre test if the drive sill unlock before encryption starts. It is at this point after the reboot that the bit-locker error come up and said bit-lock cannot be enable because the device has change or pin not inputed.
Did I do anything wrong?

I had a pre release of Windows 7 and was adding the Windows 7 Ultimate but when I added it all of my settings as far as the desktop and programs did not transfer over. I did save everything, is there a way I can revert to my old Windows 7 pre-release? Or an easy way to have my desktop, documents, etc on my new version?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running windows 7 64 bit, on an eMachines lap top, I have purchased an external HDD and now I am trying to create a perfect copy of my system. I used DriveImage XML but it failed. I have used this program in the past with great success on a different computer running WindowsXP.The failure I get is "failed to lock drive". I've tried skipping the lock drive option and going straight to shadow copy; same problem.I can only assume the failure to lock drive is based on permissions and files being in use. So I think I need to attempt this without loading windows. Is there anyway of running a "free" drive cloning program from a DVD or USB Flash drive without booting into Windows?I would just bit torrent a win7 OS, install it on my external, and run the program from their, but I don't want to have to resort to law breaking, and I have never run linux.
Also I tried using a "backup" feature on Paragon Partition Manager, it did "backup" the system, but it didn't clone the drive. All the backup files are written in directories such as "C:/archive/" and thus I assume there is no way of booting into a system written that way. I assume it's like windows system restore, and what I need is a bootable image of my primary drive.Oh and I should clarify, that it's not my external drive that fails to lock; the external HDD has been formatted, partitioned, and can read and write data just fine, and has way more than enough room to copy the HDD in my lap top. Also, the HDD on my lap top has 1 primary partition, with two logical partitions. I have no idea what the logical partitions are for and if that could be causing the problem.
I am using folder lock 6.0 to lock folder on my two laptops. I have a WD External hard drive. I want to lock (password protect) some folders on the portable/external harddrive. I don't want aany encryption because I may forgot the password and may not be able to recover data. I also don't want to lock complete partition. I just want to make it hidden/password protected from casual users. Is it possible using folder lock? It has a portability feature but it requires to transfer all data to a locker. I have a very large amount of data which I want to lock (~100GB). Folder lock has a feature to lock any folder on hard drive but it dosn't work when it is external/portable hard drive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedLots of BSOD, lock ups, hard drive not being detected by bios, is it failing? Let me start by saying my PC is custom built, most parts are only a year old. The oldest parts are the harddrive (about 5 years) and the soundcard (about 7 years). I have never had major problems until now (a year after building it).
It all started with a blue screen.
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
Reboot windows and it seems to start up fine, gets to the desktop and locks up.
Reboot windows and I get another blue screen.
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO
I try to start windows from the last good configuration. Error. Registry file failure. Cannot load hive file. I try booting from the windows cd and running a chkdsk. Hard drive starts making a buzzing sound. It gets to step 3 of 5 and stops. Failed to transfer logged messages. Status 50. Now the bios rarely even "sees" the drive. When I can get it to boot and see it, any attempt at diagnostics and repairs produces errors, locks up, or fails.
Is this a bad hard drive? I would hate to spend the money on a new one only to find it is a bad mobo or virus. How can I diagnose this? If it is a bad drive I would like to save what juice is left in it and try to recover a few files before it dies. Most of the important data has been backed up but I would like to try and get a few game save files if I can. But its not a disaster if the drive data is not recoverable.
I am attempting to install an Autocad release 14 program on Windows 7 Home Premium (x64). My understanding is that I should update to Windows Pro, and use the XP option. Is the XP option compatible with x34? or do I need to get a Pro x34 and do a clean format? I also heard that downloading an Oracle VB binary exe for windows hosts will work. Is this correct?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been troubleshooting an error with both my WIRED Internet Connection and AUDIO since installing Windows 7, over a previously running XP SP3 OS on the same Comp.I have 3 desktops running through this working connection (Router) with no problems. If I connect directly to the Modem, no problem on the internet.Through the Router, my computer retains its connection one way, cmd. ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew.This lasts for a period but if ever awaking my comp, the yellow explanation mark returns and i repeat the command.Audio is also not working. I know its likely a driver error, NIC Card, maybe, but its an old comp we put together, what specs do you need to resolve this matter?
