Can't Change BIOS Configuration
Nov 14, 2012
i got a toshiba satellite p775d and for some reason, the bios won't allow me to change any settings. it isn't asking for a password or anything like that, it just won't let me navigate to the appropriate parts of the bios gui in order to adjust the configuration. i tried flashing with the toshiba support utility, it won't permit it since the bios is the same version apparently. the bios manufacturer website utility won't permit a flash either, it only reprograms the blocks. do i have to take it into a professional?

I recently bought two Sandisk SSD's to run in RAID for my rapidly aging computer. I'm currently installing windows 7 (x64) on my new drives and I get the "no device drivers found" message that has haunted me in the past. I remember previously I resolved this issue on my Samsung F1 by setting the drive configuration in my BIOS to IDE, of course, this is not possible now as it must be set to RAID.

I downloaded the RC from the microsoft site. While attempting to install every is good and going well and I am doing an custom install which is supposed to be a clean install. I get really far in after expanding files and a couple reboots and while completing the installation near the end i receive the error:
Windows could not change the boot configuration. Windows installation cannot continue.
I have looked around for the answer and it requires you to go into registry and change some things. However I can no longer get back into the orginal OS because I choose to do a clean install rather than an upgrade. Cause I felt this would be the best option for me. I just bought a new hard drive hopeing it will fix the problem but I would rather not use it.
is there any way to fix this problem without a new harddrive? And is there a way to wipe the hard drive for a true clean install without being able to get into the OS? Thanks for any help

I just built a new PC and currently trying to install windows 7 64 bit Home ed for the first time. It gets pretty far into the install but errors out stating that "Windows could not change the computer's boot configuration." My BIOS has the latest version (Asus P8Z68/PRO/Gen3). I don't have any RAID set up, just a simple 64 GB SSD.

I have a computer running on Windows 7 with a GTX 290 card and a first gen i7 920 CPU. Ever since I built the computer a few years ago the start up is just over to the left, I can't see anything on the left side and the right side is just a black bar. The proper resolution isn't set until the log-in screen. The computer did this even when it was running on Vista. I've noticed my computer does this when running on certain resolutions that the monitor isn't good with. So my question is is there any way to change my resolution in my BIOS?

I forgot my windows password, so I created an Ophcrack ISI Image DVD. When I try this the bios shows my DVD drive in the list of bootable devices, and I select it, save changes, and exit bios, the computer then tries to boot from the hard drive (not the DVD drive selected) and obviously starts up asking for my windows password which I do not have. WHY won't the bios allow me to change the bootable drive to DVD?

I am getting ready to set up a RAID Array but this is my first time doing anything with RAID. I know how to get into the BIOS and change settings and I know with two hard drives, I should do RAID 1. However, I just have a few questions before I do this. First off, I am an idiot and did not notice that my first hard drive I got when I built the computer has a 32 MB Cache:
Caviar Blue 1TB 7,200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive WD10EALX - OEM
I noticed it only had a 32 MB CACHE when I went to get another one. I then asked for the version with a 64 MB CACHE (WD1002FAEX), paid for it and left. Will these two hard drives work together in RAID if they have different sized caches?

Im installing a new SSD and i wanted to use it as an oppertunity to change everything over to AHCI and wanted to clarify one thing before i went ahead. Im going to change the setting to AHCI in the bios and then install windows 7 on the SSD. Once i get into windows i was going to plug in the old Hard drives. With the old hard drives being used when my computer was on IDE will they be able to be read or will all the data be lost.

I am currently unable to access my bios because of the TrueCrypt Boot Loader. This also means I can't change my boot order to boot into a cd. The boot order was messed up, and whenever the password is entered it just says "No available partition" and then shuts down, so I have to press [ESC] to avoid the boot loader. And this skips any chance to enter the bios.Is there any way to fixmbr/fixboot without booting into a USB or CD?The only other way would be to remove my hard drive and get a new one to install windows on.

I had one hard drive failed(640gb). I bought replacement and tried to restore image but it failed. Then I wanted to convert to non raid system. I changed both drives(640gb) to non raid and bios change in advance setup. I am getting error when I try to reinstall win 7, "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information". I have deleted old partition many times but win 7 setup on this dell xps435 desktop won't install windows.

I'm having trouble with my very new computer (Lenovo Y480 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit), which I've narrowed down to the following sequence:
1. I restored computer to original factory settings (to rule out possible causes)
2. I ran msconfig, and checked the boxes 'Safe Mode' and 'Networking.' I got the following error message:"System configuration cannot save the original boot configuration for later restoration. Boot changes will be reverted. The system cannot find the file specified"
3. The default boot option disappeared from the boot menu (Windows 7, default OS, current OS).
4. When I restarted my computer, it would not boot and gave me the error 0xc00034, stating that the file BootBCD was missing.
I did not do anything else with my computer after restoring the factory settings, and I did not connect to the internet. I originally encountered the problem when I wanted to try installing Windows updates in safe mode after some of the installations failed. I have replicated the error several times, including after successfully installing all Windows updates.

I've got an Acer Model As5742 Laptop with an i5 480M processor and 8 GB of good Ram. I'm running Win 7 Pro 64 Bit. It's only about 5 months old and this started about a month ago. I have no other problems. IE: Blue Screens or Lockups or anything, just the Bios clock changes to a random date and time after every restart. I replaced the Bios battery twice and it only effects the chore of having to reset the time in Windows every time I boot.
I'm going to send it to Acer to be repaired within a week or two, but maybe it's not a bad timing mechanism in the motherboard and one of you people have a correct solution to it. Which will save me the trouble of sending it in for a motherboard replacement.
I do have all the drivers and bios updates installed. Oh yes I've ran about 15 different virus Etc. Malware scans with several different products and they all come back clean. I ran System File Checker SFC /scannow from the command prompt several times that also comes back OK.

I have a five-month old HP Compaq Presario Laptop, which has been working fairly decently (I've had a few virus scares, and my Norton quarrentined something a twenty days ago). On HP's advice, I just updated the BIOS on my laptop. It's currently stuck at Verifying New Bios Image, and it's at 100% - It's been stuck that way for a half-hour plus.

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers,

I put the XP disk in to have a look at the partitions before deleting them, but found the partition screen was confusing. My query is as follows:
2)There are 2 HDDs in the PC. When I got the PC, it had one Seagate HDD - W7 appeared in Windows on the C: drive and I placed applications there. Immediately afterwards I added a 2nd Hitachi HDD to hold data only, creating a single volume on it called G: data drive. This all seemed to be working fine until this current problem.
3) So, I thought I would see a C: system partition, or maybe a 100MB system reserve C: and another lettered part of that partition, and the G: partition/volume for data files (on the second HDD). However, what I saw on the partition screen via the XP installation disk was this:
476938 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR] D: Partition1 (System Rese) [NTFS] 100 MB ( 75 MB free)
E: Partition2 [NTFS] 476838 MB ( 419213 MB free) 476938 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR] C: Partition1 (data drive) [NTFS] 476937 MB ( 383546 MB free)
4) In the CMOS Features screen in the BIOS setup, the HDDs were configured like this (extract):
IDE Channel 0 Master [None]
IDE Channel 0 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 1 Master [Hitachi HDP725050GLA]
IDE Channel 1 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 2 Master [None]
IDE Channel 3 Master [None]
IDE Channel 4 Master [ST3500413AS]
IDE Channel 4 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 5 Master [Optiarc DVD RW AD-72]
The Hitachi HDD at channel 1 is the 2nd HDD, added by me after delivery to hold data files only, so I expected to see it below the Seagate HDD on this list.
5) Also, the Hitachi HDD was top of the Hard Disk Priority list on the BIOS Advanced screen. Again I would have expected to see the Seagate above the Hitachi in that list.

In XP, if one is playing something over the network on a wireless connection, there are usually (always?) little dropouts every so often caused by Wireless Zero Configuration service. So once its connected, simply disabling the service causes those dropouts to go away and playback is smooth and steady.Well, in Windows 7 I have those same dropouts over wireless but, no Wireless Zero Configuration service to disable. So what is the equivalent or what needs to be done to make it quite checking the connection so that playback will be as smooth as it is with XP?I've tried disabling a couple of sevices that were associated to wireless (WLAN Autoconfig) but so far I've only managed to completely bonk the connection.
