Cloning Apps To Handle SSDs?

Sep 27, 2011

I have a system that I'd like to clone to an SSD. The source disk is an HDD that is currently using two partitions. I'd like to just move the C partition to an SSD, but my only question is, what cloning apps would allow the SSD to be recognized properly, or would Windows 7 pick up the fact it is an SSD drive and adjust the OS accordingly, including enabling TRIM.

If it matters, the SATA controller is already set to AHCI, and the target drive is a Crucial C300.

Forgot to mention, I had been using Partition Wizard 7.0 (bootable iso) in the past, but never with an SSD.

Windows 7 Fresh Install On 2 SSDs?

Dec 22, 2011

I just ordered a P8Z68-V PRO Motherboard w/ Intel Core™ i7-2600K Processor with 2 60GB SSDs (SSD 60G|OCZ SLD3-25SAT3-60G RT). I also have 16GB of RAM (2 X Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB 2X4GB DDR3 1866MHZ PC3-15000 9-11-9-27 1.65V XMP Ready Desktop Memory Kit)I plan on doing a fresh install of Windows 7 and I need some advice on the best approach. I hear a lot about SSD caching but most of what I read talks about just adding an single SSD to a system that has Windows already running on a spinning disk. If I were to do a fresh install, I would like to make it as fast and stable as possible. The main purpose of this machine if for heavy photoshop and lightroom usage, including filters and image processing. My mobo and processor maybe overkill for these programs but when I spend 10 hours per day in front of the computer, I want it fast! I also wanted the flexibility to move into video editing if I choose. I'm not much of a gamer, so leave that out of the equation for now. I am assuming that both PS and LR will preform better if they are installed on the SSD(s) while the photos themselves are on traditional drives. Here are some of my options:

1. Raid0 - install windows and photo software and over both SSDs. I am assuming the cashing would occur on this drive as well (but I'm not sure how to set it up, or if it happens on default).

2. Raid1 - install windows and photo software on 1 SSD and keep the other as a mirror. I am assuming the cashing would occur on this drive as well (but I'm not sure how). Not sure if the mirror would be a bottleneck.

3. No Raid - install windows and photo software on 1 SSD and use the other for SSD caching.

"System Configuration Cannot Save The Original Boot Configuration For Later Restoration"

Nov 15, 2012

I'm having trouble with my very new computer (Lenovo Y480 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit), which I've narrowed down to the following sequence:

1. I restored computer to original factory settings (to rule out possible causes)

2. I ran msconfig, and checked the boxes 'Safe Mode' and 'Networking.' I got the following error message:"System configuration cannot save the original boot configuration for later restoration. Boot changes will be reverted. The system cannot find the file specified"

3. The default boot option disappeared from the boot menu (Windows 7, default OS, current OS).

4. When I restarted my computer, it would not boot and gave me the error 0xc00034, stating that the file BootBCD was missing.

I did not do anything else with my computer after restoring the factory settings, and I did not connect to the internet. I originally encountered the problem when I wanted to try installing Windows updates in safe mode after some of the installations failed. I have replicated the error several times, including after successfully installing all Windows updates.

Windows 7 HDD And Partition Configuration?

Dec 6, 2011

I put the XP disk in to have a look at the partitions before deleting them, but found the partition screen was confusing. My query is as follows:

2)There are 2 HDDs in the PC. When I got the PC, it had one Seagate HDD - W7 appeared in Windows on the C: drive and I placed applications there. Immediately afterwards I added a 2nd Hitachi HDD to hold data only, creating a single volume on it called G: data drive. This all seemed to be working fine until this current problem.

3) So, I thought I would see a C: system partition, or maybe a 100MB system reserve C: and another lettered part of that partition, and the G: partition/volume for data files (on the second HDD). However, what I saw on the partition screen via the XP installation disk was this:

476938 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR] D: Partition1 (System Rese) [NTFS] 100 MB ( 75 MB free)
E: Partition2 [NTFS] 476838 MB ( 419213 MB free) 476938 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR] C: Partition1 (data drive) [NTFS] 476937 MB ( 383546 MB free)

4) In the CMOS Features screen in the BIOS setup, the HDDs were configured like this (extract):

IDE Channel 0 Master [None]
IDE Channel 0 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 1 Master [Hitachi HDP725050GLA]
IDE Channel 1 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 2 Master [None]
IDE Channel 3 Master [None]
IDE Channel 4 Master [ST3500413AS]
IDE Channel 4 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 5 Master [Optiarc DVD RW AD-72]

The Hitachi HDD at channel 1 is the 2nd HDD, added by me after delivery to hold data files only, so I expected to see it below the Seagate HDD on this list.

5) Also, the Hitachi HDD was top of the Hard Disk Priority list on the BIOS Advanced screen. Again I would have expected to see the Seagate above the Hitachi in that list.

Can't Change BIOS Configuration

Nov 14, 2012

i got a toshiba satellite p775d and for some reason, the bios won't allow me to change any settings. it isn't asking for a password or anything like that, it just won't let me navigate to the appropriate parts of the bios gui in order to adjust the configuration. i tried flashing with the toshiba support utility, it won't permit it since the bios is the same version apparently. the bios manufacturer website utility won't permit a flash either, it only reprograms the blocks. do i have to take it into a professional?

Wireless Zero Configuration On Windows 7?

Jan 25, 2011

In XP, if one is playing something over the network on a wireless connection, there are usually (always?) little dropouts every so often caused by Wireless Zero Configuration service. So once its connected, simply disabling the service causes those dropouts to go away and playback is smooth and steady.Well, in Windows 7 I have those same dropouts over wireless but, no Wireless Zero Configuration service to disable. So what is the equivalent or what needs to be done to make it quite checking the connection so that playback will be as smooth as it is with XP?I've tried disabling a couple of sevices that were associated to wireless (WLAN Autoconfig) but so far I've only managed to completely bonk the connection.

Boot Configuration Error !

Jun 3, 2011

I was running Windows 7 on a Dell Vostro 3700 Laptop..After doing a spyware scan and finding and deleting all the entries I found, the next time I turned it on I get the error: oxc000000f "An error occured while attmepting to read the boot configuration data File: BootBCD"

I have looked online for solutions and tried using the Windows 7 disc (a copy) and also tried using 3 recovery disks, these all fail because it just stays completely black with a cursor (left for hours even) or I get a error message something around the lines of "insert correct boot media into the correct boot device" and I have no idea what this means. I cannot do a repair because I can only get the Windows disc to load if I remove the hard drive?? this is the only way I have got it past the green loading bar, so I am stuck and have no idea what to do..it only seems to respond to cds if the hard drive is removed?.. this all happened very suddenly and now I have a very expensive 800 paperweight

To add to this - I also tried the command prompt typing the bootrec.exe code that I found on the internet..selecting command prompt from the option when the Windows 7 disc was loaded, but basically it came up with an error of some sort and it had a drive letter of X:/ on the command prompt ?? ..Also to get to this the hard drive was removed because like I said I cannot get the discs working with it in.. I'm guessing this means the hard drive is screwed but there is clearly a problem with the boot sector and I have no idea on repairing it now.

Forcing Initial Configuration To Run Again?

Ok so my friend wanted me to upgrade his HP laptop to Windows 7, since he originally had the you-know-is-junk version of windows (Vista).

I was able to install all of the software, but what I want to know is if there's a way to run that configuration setup thing again.

Windows Configuration Stuck At 0%

Apr 27, 2011

I am having an issue with my windows configuration as usual when a Windows update comes along I click shut down and it updates and then once I power back on I get to the Welcome screen and it configures the new updates. Well right now I am having trouble because I run the update and then once I turn it back on the configuration stays at 0% and I have to power down and enter in Safe Mode so it reverts back to it's former updates. I don't want to have to go through this endless cycle forever is there anyway I can find out what these updates are? It is 4 of them and if I can find out what they are is there a way I can manually install each one individually to avoid this configuration freeze?

Boot Configuration Is Corrupt

Oct 21, 2009

Setup a test PC at work the other for Windows 7 32 Bit and Windows 7 64 Bit (dual boot). Set the dual boot up with EasyBCD. It was working fine until about 20 minutes ago.

I have tried the automatic startup repair but it does not fix the problem. I have also gone through Bootsect.exe and Bootrec.exe commands and they have succesfully written new MBR's and Bootsectors yet the PC still restarts. I have had to /force the previous commands to run.

I have also tried Chkdsk /r but for some reason it just runs through very quickly and finds no errors.

Any ideas as the PC's also have the virtual XP setup.

Get Windows 7 To Not Use WZC As Configuration Utility?

Jun 10, 2012

I have Win 7 Ultimate. I recently bought a usb turbotenna to catch wifi. It worked fine with the Ralink software. Ralink worked in conjunction with wzc as I set it up that way while installing the software. After a few days, I had what I thought was trouble so I uninstalled the Ralink software. I then plugged in the usb adapter and let windows load it's own drivers. Few days after that, I reinstalled the Ralink software and opted to "Use wzc as configuration utility" instead of using Ralink's. Ever since then, while I can still see and log on to networks using windows, the Ralink utility now shows NO networks. It now shows, "NIC or driver not ready". After several uninstall/reinstall, Windows will not relinquish it's primary control. I want to go back to Ralink showing networks and letting me connect through it's site survey.

Would uninstalling the Broadcom wireless connection be the solution? How do I get it to once again be secondary?
