"System Configuration Cannot Save The Original Boot Configuration For Later Restoration"
Nov 15, 2012
I'm having trouble with my very new computer (Lenovo Y480 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit), which I've narrowed down to the following sequence:
1. I restored computer to original factory settings (to rule out possible causes)
2. I ran msconfig, and checked the boxes 'Safe Mode' and 'Networking.' I got the following error message:"System configuration cannot save the original boot configuration for later restoration. Boot changes will be reverted. The system cannot find the file specified"
3. The default boot option disappeared from the boot menu (Windows 7, default OS, current OS).
4. When I restarted my computer, it would not boot and gave me the error 0xc00034, stating that the file BootBCD was missing.
I did not do anything else with my computer after restoring the factory settings, and I did not connect to the internet. I originally encountered the problem when I wanted to try installing Windows updates in safe mode after some of the installations failed. I have replicated the error several times, including after successfully installing all Windows updates.
I recently added a hard drive to my computer (SSD), and installed Windows 7 x64 onto it. The result being a dual boot system, which by default boots to the SSD, and optionally (by Windows Boot Menu), can be booted to the original drive (standard mechanical drive).
Initial setup went fine, however I decided to customize the Windows Boot Menu, so that logical names could be associated with each operating system instance. To do this I used EasyBCD and I altered the names in the Windows Boot Menu from: Quote:
Windows 7 Windows 7
to... Quote:
Windows 7 - SSD Windows 7 - Standard Drive
Shortly after the modification I noticed that I was no longer able to boot into the original OS. Instead I was being presented with a "Repair Windows" option. Figuring that my EasyBCD "tampering" may have had something to do with the issue I decided to change the names back to "Windows 7" in the Windows Boot Menu. However doing so had no positive impact on boot up of the original OS.
After booting again into the original OS I accepted the "Repair Windows" option, and then left the computer over night to do it's "thing". After completion of the "Repair" the situation has deteriorated -
* Windows doesn't load (the same as before)
* Windows doesn't present a "Repair Windows" option (it did before)
* The computer reboots a short period after the "Starting Windows" screen is presented
As a side note the drive is in good health, and all data on it can be read from within Windows 7 when I boot to the SSD OS.

I was messing around with the partition editor in Fedora 14 and accidentally changed the file type on the boot partition. When I go through the startup repair and do the command prompt method, when I enter bcdedit I get the message "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified"When I do bootrec.exe /fixboot it give me this. "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded an that the volume is not corrupted" /fixmbr says that it completes successfully btw.
my OS is windows 7 just wondering what startup programs i can disable in system configuration and more importantly which ones i shouldnt disable, or does it even matter. i just want to get max performance from my pc. i have attached my startup snapshot. also do all services need to be enabled in sys config.?
I went to check my msconfig today and I noticed my "Startup Selection" was set to "Selective Startup". I certainly do not recall doing this and have been having no problems with my computer so I was wondering if it's meant to be like this? Should I leave it alone or change it back to normal startup?
I use port forwarding on port 3389 on my home router so I can remote to my PC from wherever I am. I have some concerns about the amount of unauthorized log on attemps that are present in the security section of event viewer on my home PC. Obviously someone is scanning for open ports, and from what I can see none of the attempts were successful at logging in, but I'm wondering what approach I should take to hide the presence of this open port?
I was running Windows 7 on a Dell Vostro 3700 Laptop..After doing a spyware scan and finding and deleting all the entries I found, the next time I turned it on I get the error: oxc000000f "An error occured while attmepting to read the boot configuration data File: BootBCD"
I have looked online for solutions and tried using the Windows 7 disc (a copy) and also tried using 3 recovery disks, these all fail because it just stays completely black with a cursor (left for hours even) or I get a error message something around the lines of "insert correct boot media into the correct boot device" and I have no idea what this means. I cannot do a repair because I can only get the Windows disc to load if I remove the hard drive?? this is the only way I have got it past the green loading bar, so I am stuck and have no idea what to do..it only seems to respond to cds if the hard drive is removed?.. this all happened very suddenly and now I have a very expensive 800 paperweight
To add to this - I also tried the command prompt typing the bootrec.exe code that I found on the internet..selecting command prompt from the option when the Windows 7 disc was loaded, but basically it came up with an error of some sort and it had a drive letter of X:/ on the command prompt ?? ..Also to get to this the hard drive was removed because like I said I cannot get the discs working with it in.. I'm guessing this means the hard drive is screwed but there is clearly a problem with the boot sector and I have no idea on repairing it now.
Setup a test PC at work the other for Windows 7 32 Bit and Windows 7 64 Bit (dual boot). Set the dual boot up with EasyBCD. It was working fine until about 20 minutes ago.
I have tried the automatic startup repair but it does not fix the problem. I have also gone through Bootsect.exe and Bootrec.exe commands and they have succesfully written new MBR's and Bootsectors yet the PC still restarts. I have had to /force the previous commands to run.
I have also tried Chkdsk /r but for some reason it just runs through very quickly and finds no errors.
Any ideas as the PC's also have the virtual XP setup.
I downloaded the RC from the microsoft site. While attempting to install every is good and going well and I am doing an custom install which is supposed to be a clean install. I get really far in after expanding files and a couple reboots and while completing the installation near the end i receive the error:
Windows could not change the boot configuration. Windows installation cannot continue.
I have looked around for the answer and it requires you to go into registry and change some things. However I can no longer get back into the orginal OS because I choose to do a clean install rather than an upgrade. Cause I felt this would be the best option for me. I just bought a new hard drive hopeing it will fix the problem but I would rather not use it.
is there any way to fix this problem without a new harddrive? And is there a way to wipe the hard drive for a true clean install without being able to get into the OS? Thanks for any help

I have been having trouble with my computer being slow. After doing a repair install it is better, but it did not correct the "freezing up" part of it. Sometimes I can correct it by just clicking all over the screen and other times to ctrl, alt, del and click on different user, but it is a pain. Any one know why it would be freezing up?
well now ive got this really weird problem that only seems to be affecting windows 7 on my computer...i duel boot between both xp and 7; 7 is what i use most of the time and only really keep xp as back up and the fact that im to lazy to move partitions and files around. but to the problem...when i start up windows 7 as its booting up as far as i can tell it just keeps sucking up my physical memory...once i do get into an account(administrator which has nothing on it) and open task manager(which takes a long time to start up log on and bring it up) i see that my physical memory usage just keeps going up and up untill it evetually uses to much and i cant use my mounse.....then itll keep going untill its completly locked up and i have to use the power button to shut it down...this has been going on for bout a week now...ive tried taken off all hardware(exept video card which is because i have no on board) and tried windows start up repair(which does nothing) and i cant use my disc right now because it wont let me boot into it(gives me i/o error i think my cd drive is dieing....only bout 6 years old now heh) this problem only happens with windows 7 on xp i have no problem i boot up and can leave it going.also sorry for any spelling mistakes but im tired right now and left my glasses in the other room.
Those two IE8 patches from Windows Update seemed to really kill my system. I don't even use IE. I installed the patch, restarted, and my computer would not boot. Random services / processes would crash followed by WerFault crashing... I went into safe mode and system a system restore, and I thought all was good. But now, I have to continually choose to use last known good configuration from the boot options to get into windows. If I don't, it'll proceed to crash. Is there any way to make windows use the LKGC as my current config??
I recently got my computer running again after the motherboard had been friend, obviously replacing the old one for new working one of a different model same manufacturer. I have tried starting with a fresh install, but consistently running into errors. Some of which include "Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer." "Boot Configuration is corrupt 0x460" And screen randomly freezing and pixel breaking.
I have a windows 7 x64. I separated 40 gb my disk and installed windows 2008 R2.But my boot info did not change. How can i add my new OS in my bcdedit? (I need exact commands)
I originally stated out with XP Pro and then installed Win 7 in a separate partition with dual booting. Now I want to get rid of the XP OS and recover the partition the XP OS is in for other uses.
Running bcdedit shows the the Win 7 as drive C and XP as drive D. The master boot record, I am guessing, in is drive D.
So how do I get the master boot record into the Win 7 partition so I can delete the partition containing the XP OS?
It was doing this once before, but this time there is no BSOD. My system is biostar TH55b hd mobo, Asus ATI 5450 HD Graphics, 4 gigs ram, and several hundred gigs oh hd space. The description of the issue is that my pc freezes daily without any specific messages. Wish I could give you a better desription. This is a fresh reinstall of the os. Also there isn't any bluescreen hence there's no dump file, atleast that I know of.
I'm attempting to dual boot Windows7x64 7100 with the Vistax64 i currently have installed on my Acer Aspire 5100. I have created a new simple volume partition of 16GB on my drive and have attempted to do a clean install on this drive using the Windows 7 iso DVD I made.
The files are all extracted, updates are installed and everything runs smoothly until after the system has restarted during the installation, launching Windows 7 where it attempts to "finalize" or "complete" installation. The progress bar gradually makes its way towards completion when all of a sudden it tells me that
"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."
I have read many forums offering advice on this error with no success for my problem. I have attempted the registry fix with PartMgr, which didn't need to be fixed in the first place and have also attempted installation with Norton Antivirus uninstalled. Each with no success.
I like to use my mouse on the left side even though I'm a rightie, so I have the primary buttons switched. Unfortunately, Windows 7 loads that config almost at the end of the boot up process, which of course is annoying if you're trying to click on a few things while the boot finishes (and not knowing which button to use
I just built a new PC and currently trying to install windows 7 64 bit Home ed for the first time. It gets pretty far into the install but errors out stating that "Windows could not change the computer's boot configuration." My BIOS has the latest version (Asus P8Z68/PRO/Gen3). I don't have any RAID set up, just a simple 64 GB SSD.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate on two PCs on my home network. I went to use one yesterday and was presented with a black screen. I rebooted the PC hoping that would solve my issue and was presented with the following error message while trying to reboot:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. File: BOOTBCD Status: 0xc000000d Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data
I checked my other PC and saw that it had been updated with several Windows patches yesterday. I'm guessing that the broken PC had an issue installing or rebooting from one of the patches. I ran the repair utility on the windows 7 dvd as instructed by the error message. It was unable to find a previous installation of windows with an error box saying: The file or directory C:BootBCD is corrupt and unreadable please run Chkdsk utility.
I tried the auto repair anyway, which appears to be working until the end when it gives me the "The file or directory C:BootBCD is corrupt and unreadable please run Chkdsk utility" error again. Then it says it can't save the fixes and says it can't be repaired. When I check the details it says I need to "repair offline" and that it cannot find an OS installed.
In my searches for an answer, I read about rebuilding the BCD through the command prompt. I ran the following commands:
BOOTREC /FIXMBR - said it was successful BOOTREC /FIXBOOT - said it was successful BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD - failed saying The file or directory C:BootBCD is corrupt and unreadable please run Chkdsk utility
I ran chkdsk and got no errors. I only have one hard drive, but when I go to a command prompt (from the repair section on the Windows 7 Install disk) it defaults to D:. I checked C: and it appears to be making the reserved system space drive C:, which would explain why I can't find a windows install on it. Worst case, If I just go down the path of re-installing windows without formatting the drive, will it pickup my old settings?
Here is what system info I could get (from the BIOS startup diagnostics): Main Processor: AMD Athalon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ Memory Testing: 2030592K +64M shared memory Memory Information: DDR2 533 Dual Channel, 128 bit CPU L2 cache size: 512K x 2
My win 7 machine boots perfectly with two SATA mirrored drives and a Promise Ultra 133 TX2 IDE controller card with no drives attached. But when I connect drives to either IDE1 or IDE2, the machine will not even get to win start up.
I was trying to get my laptop to boot into safe mode to get rid of a file. I went to msconfig and picked Safe Boot, after I restarted my laptop, I got the message:Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have the disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.File: BootBCD Status: 0xc0000034 Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information. When I hit enter, it just restarts my laptop and brings me to the same screen. My laptop did not come with a installation disc.. The only thing I did was change a setting which I thought was going to boot me into safemode in msconfig.
I am trying to fix my girlfriend's computer, which freezes on the windows log-on screen. (I am accessing these forums from my computer.)If I input her password in quickly, then it freezes with "Welcome" in the center of the screen and "Windows 7 Home Premium" at the bottom. If I am slow inputting her password, then it freezes before I get a chance to input the password. After a few minutes, the computer shuts down. When I boot it up, it says something about the computer overheating.I have tried a few things like system repair, etc, but not in any sort of rigorous way (and honestly, I don't remember which ones I have tried so I wouldn't mind starting from scratch, step-by-steph.
I tried to install new updates of Ableton live and the machine crashed badly... and since them it has really gone a bit wonky. When I press the on button to boot up the laptop I get the following message. The Windows Boot Configuration Data (BCD) Store file contains some invalid information.[CODE]I have a back up on another external drive ..... plus I have made a repair disk and so on when I first got the machine.
I'm getting this every time I boot up my computer. It happened after I had my computer on "sleep". When I woke up and tried to open my laptop, it shut off and showed me this:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc an restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
File: BootBCD Status: 0xc0000001 Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
It simply takes me to the same screen when I hold "F8". So I cannot get the "Repair your computer." Option. I do not have the windows installation disc. Also, all I can do is basically start up my computer and it takes me to that screen every time.
