Cloning Apps To Handle SSDs?
Sep 27, 2011
I have a system that I'd like to clone to an SSD. The source disk is an HDD that is currently using two partitions. I'd like to just move the C partition to an SSD, but my only question is, what cloning apps would allow the SSD to be recognized properly, or would Windows 7 pick up the fact it is an SSD drive and adjust the OS accordingly, including enabling TRIM.
If it matters, the SATA controller is already set to AHCI, and the target drive is a Crucial C300.
Forgot to mention, I had been using Partition Wizard 7.0 (bootable iso) in the past, but never with an SSD.

I can only connect to the network using 64 bit applications on Window 7 Pro SP1.The problem occured after installing the latest version of iTunes (may or may not be related). I uninstalled iTunes with no change. IE 32 bit crashes after opening. Firefox opens but gives Server Not Found error. I cannot connect webservers on the local network with Firefox either. Filezilla will not connect to local or remote servers. VNC will not connect to local servers - IE 64 works fine and command line tools like ftp and telnet to internal and external sites works fine - this is not a DNS, Firewall, or Routing issue.
Same results in Safe Mode
sfc /scannow runs clean.
I reset the winsock, uninstalled all my network adapters, including the drivers and resinstalled them.Rebooted multiple times.Unfortunately I just discoved that System Restore was not enabled so I can't roll back.I doubt this is malware related as I have multiple levels of defense (postini, SpyShelter, Symantec Endpoint) and outside of iTunes have not downloaded or installed anything or even visited unusual websites. I'm about to do a deep scan that will probably take a few hours just to play it safe.

I just ordered a P8Z68-V PRO Motherboard w/ Intel Coreā¢ i7-2600K Processor with 2 60GB SSDs (SSD 60G|OCZ SLD3-25SAT3-60G RT). I also have 16GB of RAM (2 X Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB 2X4GB DDR3 1866MHZ PC3-15000 9-11-9-27 1.65V XMP Ready Desktop Memory Kit)I plan on doing a fresh install of Windows 7 and I need some advice on the best approach. I hear a lot about SSD caching but most of what I read talks about just adding an single SSD to a system that has Windows already running on a spinning disk. If I were to do a fresh install, I would like to make it as fast and stable as possible. The main purpose of this machine if for heavy photoshop and lightroom usage, including filters and image processing. My mobo and processor maybe overkill for these programs but when I spend 10 hours per day in front of the computer, I want it fast! I also wanted the flexibility to move into video editing if I choose. I'm not much of a gamer, so leave that out of the equation for now. I am assuming that both PS and LR will preform better if they are installed on the SSD(s) while the photos themselves are on traditional drives. Here are some of my options:
1. Raid0 - install windows and photo software and over both SSDs. I am assuming the cashing would occur on this drive as well (but I'm not sure how to set it up, or if it happens on default).
2. Raid1 - install windows and photo software on 1 SSD and keep the other as a mirror. I am assuming the cashing would occur on this drive as well (but I'm not sure how). Not sure if the mirror would be a bottleneck.
3. No Raid - install windows and photo software on 1 SSD and use the other for SSD caching.

I'm new here, guys, so don't shoot me down in flames if this has been covered. I've checked the search, but didn't come up with anything the same.I've just re-jigged the Good Lady's PC - it had some sort of virus. Wiped it & re-installed Win 7 Pro.Put back most of the stuff that was there & most everything works except anything that's a '.doc' file.Clicking on any one of those produces a 'Handle is Invalid' error & won't start. However, dragging & dropping on LibreOffice starts up the file & it can be edited. Saving it again does not fix the problemOne noticeable difference is that I have gone from MS Office XP to LibreOffice as the old XP was no longer opening some new file being sent to her (choir!).I am wondering if this may be the cause. I have a copy of MS Office 2010 & will try installing that & taking control of the .doc files. I'll see if that fixes it

I rarely need to send/receive a FAX, but I would like to know how before I need to. In the past, I had a dialup FAX modem, but now I'm on cable, and I never thought about FAXing until just now. My printer also has a FAX function, but the only driver available for it on Windows 7 is the one that Windows 7/Windows Update installs. In the Windows FAX/Scan program, the scanner works perfectly, but When I try to creat a new FAX, it says that I need a FAX modem. I have no idea of whether my cable modem is capable of that or not, but when I select to send a FAX, a window appears stating that I need a fax modem or server, but when I select to use a local modem, an error appears saying that I need to contact the administrator (me). From the interface, the only thing that appears to be for setting this up is the Tools>Options menu, but when I click on that, nothing happens. The first question is whether it is typical for a cable modem to be able to handle a FAX or not?

I have setup the backup utility to use my network drive and create an image and copy the my doc folder. When I run the utility it will go through it's process for a long time before providing the following error information:
Check your backup
One of the backup files could not be created.
Details: The handle is invalid.
Error code: 0x8078002A
I am unfamiliar with what the error means and when I go to the network drive the backup zip files say they are also corrupt. Has anyone come across this, or have an idea as to what the problem may be?

I just bought a Dell XPS 8300. It will have Intel Core i7-2600 processor(8MB Cache, 3.4GHz), 8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - 4x2GB,Nvidia Geforce GT530 and 500GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive 7200 RPM. I am replacing a HP media pc that I bought 4-5 years ago as it seems that the graphics card as well as other issues are about to make the motherboard fry. My son play's the 3D game Minecraft. I just want to make sure if he continues to play, that it won't do the same thing to this pc. I did some research and it seemed without moving up to Alien Ware this was the best I could do for the money.

I've put together a new clone system with the intent of running 64-bit Win 7 Pro on it. Until it becomes available, I have 32-bit XP Pro installed on it. Nothing is overclocked, in fact, the memory is "underclocked" for stability. I'd rather have it stable than gain some trivial performance improvement.
Previously, when I first built it up, I installed 64-bit Ubuntu "Jaunty" on it with 8 GB of RAM installed in it (4 X 2GB). The Linux distro installed and was perfectly stable.
To get a "heads up" on Win 7 issues, I downloaded and installed the trial Enterprise edition. Since I couldn't find any MD5 for the ISO, I downloaded the file twice and did a binary compare on the two downloads to ensure they were the same. Also, I see that the Java applet that downloads the ISO file also has some kind of "verify process" built-in that runs at the end of the download (a checksum?). I burned a DVD in XP Pro using Nero 8 with data verification on (after burning, it reads the burned disk and compares the disk's contents with the ISO file).
Since 32-bit XP Pro can't even fully use 4 GB, I uninstalled 4 of the 8 GB (two modules) when I installed XP on the box. When the entire 8 GB was in the MoBo, I ran MemTest86+ for long periods without errors. To do so, however, I had to "underclock" the memory to DDR2-800 speeds. It couldn't successfully run at DDR2-1066 speeds. A problem that, by checking various support BBS's, was found to be common with my MoBo and the RAM modules in question. After pulling the two modules, I left the memory timing at the conservative settings. I also let MemTest86+ run overnight and got no errors with the two modules installed. My plan is (or, was) to put the entire 8 GB of RAM back after I got 64-bit Windows 7 running on it.

One night while loging off,I noticed a small memo from "cnet" specifying that by running their testtracker software, i could isolate the reaon why i got the apparent error and a poosible clue as to what to do to alleviate it. i read the info on the memo and proceeded and found that a "date" was missing or had been unabled to be updated on a file due to the rules laid down and that prevented an update on he particular file. (only found that out much later.) the date was only the beginning and the the abilities of cnet and finding where to go in the application left me totally lost. i need help in in knowing ho and what exactly to do when the date is accidentally or intentionally changed. and what occurs after that point. does the date affect anything other area.

I've upgraded my PC and reinstalled the OS; spec shown below. The only difference is that now, my OS is on an SSD drive (OCZ Petrol). However, I note that my memory usage is constantly increasing; even with only background apps running, I was up to 7GB. When I check Task Manager, I see that the "System" process's "Handles" count is constantly increasing. As I speak, it's almost at 1,000,000; last night I saw it get up to 4,000,000.

I am running W7/64 in a Dell Inspiron. I discovered that Windows Backup did not give me back my folders when I needed them and I don't want to use it again. In all previous OSs I have used Apricorn/Acronis which backed up from BIOS and produced an external HD copy which would boot automatically and restore the complete disk, or one could select folders and files to move back. Simple and elegant.
i searched for "clone" information in "Windows 7" and got information mostly for other XP, Vista, etc. But I did see that the free XXCLONE was mentioned and I would like to hear from anyone who has used XXClone in Windows 7 to report on its value, problems, etc.

I migrated from a 250 GB HDD to a 500 GB. I had around 230 GB of information wich I really didn't want to loose, so I cloned the old HDD to the new one with the software Acronis True Image Home.
Apparently, the cloning succeds, but when I disconnect the old Disk and try to boot from the new one, when I log on I get stuck in "preparing your session".

I tried twice to clone the partition but the new one is behaving oddly. url...first when windows starts theres nothing on the screen, i have to ctrl+alt+del and create a explorer.exe process, then I can't navigate because any attempt to enter "computer" or any explorer windows returns a warning with "no such interface supported". All my data is still there but is currently unusable.I really want to clone it because reinstalling everything is going to be too much time consuming.

I bought a intel 320 160g gen3. Looking to clone my raid o to it. I may be over simplifying it but can't I just install the SSd in the 3rd Sata spot clone to it from the raid then just change the bios to boot off of the SSd and change it to ahci? Then keep the raid o as is for storage of games and such. I am not putting any important data on the raid o purely a gaming computer. Fresh instal isn't an option btw.

I originally did a fresh install of Windows 7 onto an SSD, which has now become too small. Using the Windows 7 utility today I created a system image onto an external standard hard drive. I'd like to restore the image onto my new, larger SSD. Is preparation such as alignment needed, or does going from one SSD to another take care of that? I'm assuming I can resize the active partition using Disk Management afterwards.

I've cloned my 320GB HDD to a 128GB SSD. Before you think I lost my mind let me state, I've used "less" than 25% of that 320GB HDD.
Now, my problem is this. When I boot up the cloned SSD in my new] laptop it will not bootup and says, it does not detect a bootble disk. I've tried the repair/restore three times with no success. Does anyone know for certain what I might do to repair this issue and get it to bootup correctly?

I have used a linux live cd to create an exact image copy of a 320gb hdd on an external HDD by doing:
root@ubuntu:/media/backup# dd if=/dev/sda of=2011-09-19.img bs=32256
9922896+0 records in
9922896+0 records out
320072933376 bytes (320 GB) copied, 8851.48 s, 36.2 MB/s
Windows 7 ultimate is installed on that HDD. I just want this image so if the hdd fails i can buy a new hdd and restore the image to the new hdd. However is there some disk signature problem if i do this? Because the new hdd would have a different disk signature from the one of the old hdd. I have read that this can cause an error message during boot along the lines of 'The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.'. Do i have to manually edit the MBR using a hex editor to match the new hdd? How do i even find the correct signature of the new hdd?
