CPU Load Stays At 15 Percent After Windows Updates - Constant Disk Activity
May 5, 2012
Just got a brand new Samsung Series 7 laptop and everything was working fine until i started installing windows updates. The cpu is now stuck at around 15% load and there's constant disk activity too. I run msconfig.exe and disabled programs that I don't really use much, run disk defrag just too make sure the disk was working well. As a result my cpu is running hot (65 degrees) and the battery drains pretty quick.

Just got a new Acer aspire laptop for christmas. Everything works fine except that every time I turn it on or wake it up, there's about a 10 minute period of non-stop disk activity that causes every other application to come to a grinding hault.I downloaded process monitor and checked it out, and found the two most-accessed files are two TMP files called MSI7895.tmp and MSI8BDA.tmp, both in the Windows installer directory. No idea what either of these files are for.I'm thinking this has something to do with the tons of bloatware that came on this laptop. It's a 2.3 GHz, quad-core CPU with 4GB of RAM. I'd just really like to stop this so it doesn't take 3 minutes to open an Explorer window

I currently connect my LG Flatron W2361V Monitor & my HD 5830 GPU with a HDMI cable, however some times when I turn my monitor off & come back to turn it on it takes a long time to pic up a signal & when it does system feels slow. However after checking the Catalyst Control Centre is showed my GPU Activity was 99% & it stops like that until I reboot.

My XFX HD6950 1GB is running at 95%-99% when not performing any tasks. Here are some solutions i tried which did not work:
- I restarted my pc but that did not solve the problem.
- I tried to reinstall my driver but that also did not fix the problem.
The driver I am running for my GPU is the latest catalyst control centre. The problem started a few hours ago but my pc did not crash (yet).

I've been using Windows 7 since it was released and never had to reinstall so far.Unfortunately my System seems to have developed some issues which make work with the computer rather tedious. I have the impression that the issues are all related to a massive boot delay. Windows takes some 4-7 Minutes to boot. The masive delay starts after the logon screen. I have not been able to find out what is going on here and where the timeloss occurs. Once the machine has become usable - i observe some serious disc activity (led blinking constantly. This can go on for minutes.
I already tried to deactivate unnecessary startup programs, scan for malware. I frequently let ccleaner sweep the system.'d be very happy to see some opinions about this behaviour and perhaps find a way to resolve the issue, so I do not have to reinstall from scratch. I am aware that there is an inplace repair function in Windows 7 - this however only works with a system CD that contains Windows 7+sp1+all important updates. As I only have the original system CD I would like to avoid setting up a working boot cd.ps:[CODE]

I installed Windows 7 RC. When ever I am booted into Windows 7 one of my hard drives (probably not system drive - sounds like my secondary storage drive) is constantly working. Not very much but still making sounds.
I have completely turned off indexation, there is no automatic defrag going on. I have set a constant size to the paging file and there is no antivirus activity going on. The hard drive is making noise even when the system is idle for a long time and also when I am using it.
The processes tab in the task monitor shows no process that is using CPU.
What can this hard drive activity be?

I'm having this weird problem with a PC trashing disk to the point where the PC becomes completely unresponsive, yet, perfmon does not seem to indicate any load. CPU is 1-3%, memory used <1.5GB. Disk-IO is indicated to <100 KB/sec, yet, and this is the weird bit, the blue line "highest active time" hammers on at 100% non-stop, and the HD activity light is on constant.
This is the hardware:
GIGABYTE Z68MA-D2H-B3 MB
i5-2400 CPU
2 x 4GB 1333MHz RAM
2 x 320GB WD SATA3 (3GB) disks connected to the MB 3GB SATA connectors.
It started with an upgrade from an AMD64 with an Asrock MB which had worked fine for years. First I just replaced the MB, CPU and RAM and after the usual complaints by MS, Windows 7 eventually settled and everything worked fine for a couple of days until suddenly the trashing that I described above started. I thought this was perhaps due to some leftover drivers from the AMD time, so I reformatted and reinstalled Windows 7. The trashing eventually goes away, for example if I leave it alone overnight, it might have calmed down in the morning, or if I turn off the PC and turn it on again, it may take anything from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours, but eventually it starts again.I already checked for malware. I've used Avast for years, but decided to switch to MSE to see if it made any difference (it didn't). I also ran Malwarebytes, also didn't find any problems. Windows 7 has been updated with all the latest updates and patches and SP1 as well as with the supplied Gigabyte Drivers.

I have a
Lenovo Laptop Thinkpad Edge E520
8GB RAM
Intel CPU B960
Pentium Processor 2.2GHZ
Recently when I have powered up my laptop it occasionally doesn't load properly, the screen stays black. You can hear the laptop working fine but you cannot see anything. This happens once or twice a week, I usually hold on the power button for 5 seconds, then reboot and it resumes my hibernate settings as usual. Could this be because I always hibernate my laptop?

Every time I shut down my laptop, there would always be the notice "installing update 1 of 1". This has been happening for a while and I'm wondering what's going on.
In addition, many random files have been created in the Local C drive as shown: Corrupted Image removed - please re- upload
I don't know if I should just delete them but anyway, I chose not to just in case.

I am having trouble lately with my disk drives. First of all the specs and then the problems :
[code]...
Second behavior, I think since last week, my activity led is pulsing every second and my main drive never seems to go to sleep while my three others do. This is bugging me deeply as I have no idea what exactly is goign on the system. There is NO viruses, NO malware. Windows has been reinstalled from scrath on fresh formatted partion. I've tried to boot the system in diagnotstic mode with the same issue. I do not know what is the problem but I find it very unpleasant. An other test I did, disconnect the RAID entirely and the pulsing continue.Do anyone of you have any idea of what's going on? Are both problem related somehow? Could it be a windows patch causing all of this as it started not so long ago while is was running perfectly before?

When I play 1080p video and there is lot of disk activity at the same time (virus database updates, someone copy something trough local network, DVD is burning...anyway - lot of hard disk activity) then the video shows very poor performance - stops and starts for sec, then stops, slideshows and so on (also with sound). When this happens the CPU is about 50-60% so CPU is not an issue. I also set the media player priority to high in task manager - still bad performance when hard drive activity is high.
I have AMD CPU 3GHz, 3,5MB RAM, 1GB ATI Radeion HD4850
I DID NOT HAVE ANY SUCH ISSUE ON XP...whats the problem?

I've had the computer for about a year, a custom build...it's been working fine, then all of a sudden the problem started & now I'm suffering serious lag & slow down even with the most simple tasks (like clicking on the start icon) the HDD light is on continually & I can hear the drive clicking away. It never stops. (Starts when the windows loading screen comes on)Boot time is also incredibly slow around 10 minutes to boot up.I've just done a clean install of Windows 7 pro x 64 and the problem still persists...no other software installed other than my graphics & sound card drivers. The workstation isn't connected to the net I use a laptop for all that/this.On Task Manager my CPU is 0% & my Memory 6% which is fine..The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7,200 SATA II.The programs causing this are mostly with-in "System" & SVChost" processes on the HDD.
For example:
Windows service profile
RtBackup
NTFS free space map
NTFS master file table
Winevt logs
I have read many threads about these type of problems but with never any clarification.I've got a ton of work to do...and I cant even open control panel under 1 minute right now.

With heavy(?) disk use, my system appears to stop disk activity. Resource Monitor shows nothing under Overview and Disk where there would be e.g. system and explore.exe listed as images before this condition.
I'm trying to copy 100-200GB from one disk to another. After some time, this condition happens but I can still to other things. The network is up, I can e.g. ping my LinkSys, ssh to work. Eventually, things will just freeze. Pulling the power cord is the only way to solve so far.
I did install new HW, a SATA controller, but can't remove it. The disk I'm copying to is 3TB WD Green. I need the new SATA controller to use > 2TB disks. I already know the old (onboard BIOS) SATA controller works, I've copied 500-1000GB overnight in the past. Right now, using smaller sized copies, things behave.
The new controler is a HighPoint Rocket 640L, basic disk step as before (i.e. no RAID). I tried manually updating to the latest Windows 7 64b drivers from HighPoint's site, but system tells me I have the latest.
I have a day or two before I can even RMA the adapter. I'd rather try a few things before ending up back where I am in a week if the next adapter has the same issie.

My Win 7 (64 bit) computer with a Intel i5 760 CPU, 4Gb of ram and AT Radeon HD 7500 Graphics card has developed a problem with about 25% constant CPU activity and constant disc activity. Task Manager shows that this is due to the "NT Kernel and System" process, and it can't be stopped. The surprising thing is that I get exactly the same problem in Safe Mode with no connection to the Network, so what the heck is going on?

For some reason, when I archive my personal folder, the size of the outlook.pst is not decreasing? I'm following the same steps, e.g. I close outlook after archiving, then re-open and compact the personal folder. From WITHIN Outlook, the personal folder size shows that it's been reduced significantly. But from my file manager view, the file size continues to grow, and is now approaching 2G. While I know this Outlook 2003 2G max limitation was "fixed" in Outlook 2007, I still don't understand why the size on disk doesn't reflect the fact that I've archived?
I'm running Outook 2007 under Windows 7 (64 bit)
I'm assuming this may be a problem because Outlook occasionally hoses up for no apparent reason?
I checked my page file size versus my RAM and since they were both ~ 6G, I followed the advice received elsewhere in this forum to increase the page file size. I have now set it at 9G to 12G.

Windows 7 X 64 fails when trying to load MS updates. I have Malwarebytes and MS essentials installed. Security updates for MS.NET are successful as are Definitions for MSE, the Bing Bar updates and even updates for Office 2010 (even though it is not loaded on my computer) but none of the Security Updates for Windows 7 x64 based systems will load. Every bootup for weeks it says - you have 37-40 updates. If I tell it not to update, sometimes, somehow, it does it any way and in the middle of my word processing a box pops up that is counting down to a reboot. If I don't walk away it just shuts down in the middle of my typing. If I ignore the "updates available" it changes my log off box from "shut down" to load updates and shut down.
If I don't pay close attention and change the default back to "shut down" each time I get stuck loading all the same updates that didn't load the day before. Of course if I tell it to load updates it will finish and then wants to shut down. During shut down it spends a very long time loading definitions? Then when I reboot it spends even longer trying to load updates. I must walk away. This ties my computer up for a very long time and then always has to run "start up repair" to get the PC to boot after loading updates. Every once in a while start up repair fails and the only way to use my computer is to "reset to an earlier date before the latest updates". Of course then it insists I need the updates once more! Including the ones that DID load once successfully.
I don't understand about firewalls and if I have one it is probably the default that came with MSE. (Windows also has one?) Malware bytes is not set to automatically update and run and I manually run it every few weeks but the machine always comes up clean. I downloaded and ran KB947821 System Readiness Tool but it did not improve the situation. I disabled MSE and was able to load all the security updates successfully in batches but every time I tried to load an update for win 7 x64 most of them failed, i.e KB2506014, 2533552, 2641690, 980408, 2506014, etc. Something must be blocking some of my MS updates and letting others through. I heard there was a service pack for win 7 but I hesitate to try and download it as it will probably just freeze my computer.

I have a WD Green drive which parks its heads after 8 seconds of inactivity. This is measured by "load/unload cycle count" in SMART, and WD rates the drive for 300,000 cycles. I have accumulated over 15,000 in the span of a few days, which obviously isn't good for drive longevity. I don't have a way to run the tool provided by WD to alter the timeout for the heads, so I need to figure out what is causing this frequent disk access. Prior to whenever this started (I'm assuming it was a few days ago, when I installed a new motherboard) I was averaging 0-10 load/unload cycles per day, depending on how often I accessed the drive.I checked activity with Resource Monitor and found nothing accessing the drive except for the very occasional access of BCD.log and the MFT. However, I'm seeing ~3-6 load/unload cycles per minute, so something is accessing the drive every 8-20 seconds.
I tried using procmon. I set it to filter only for activity on E: (the drive in question) and I unchecked all the default "exclude" filters; I saw nothing besides procmon accessing the drive. I ran it for a good 5 minutes. The drive is connected to an Intel Z68 SATA II controller. I have no other drives which park their heads so I don't know if this activity occurs on all my drives or not. Again, nothing shows in procmon or Resource monitor. What can I do to see what's accessing the drive?Tried so far:Disabling SuperfetchDisabling AV
Disabling Indexing

So recently my desktop PC has been freezing at random times, and then sometimes restarting after not responding for a couple of minutes (no BSOD, just restarts as far as I've seen). It sometime freezes as soon as I turn the computer on, while Windows is loading, and sometimes it will start freezing after an hour it's been on. Most of the time it will just freeze for around a minute, and then unfreeze, but sometimes it does freeze and then restart. By freeze I mean everything, mouse included, and ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work. Also at bootup sometimes, it will fail to detect my SATA hard-drive and hang at Detecting SATA drives at the bios screen. This will be following by a disk read error. This problem started occuring a couple of weeks a go, so I reinstalled Windows 7 and it worked fine after that.
Running Windows 7
Bios: Phoenix - AwardBios v6.00PG
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU E6550 @2.33GHz

I have a trail copy of windows 7 ultimate 32 bit with a keygen to make it into a licened version. thing is the disk does not have any updates on it. normally i can live without them, but it doesnt even have the most basic things like realtek hd audio driver or even my video card driver. windows update will automatically install everything i need as soon as i connect to the internet, but i do not always have internet handy. my question is would there be any way i can burn my updates to a disk instead of just installing them so i can have them for later? i dont need this to work on all computers cause im aware that different computers require different drivers. i only need my own computer updates.

We just acquired a new laptop with Win7 HP preloaded. One of the first things I did was try to make a System Repair CD (Start/All Programs/Maintenance/Create a System Repair Disc). The CD burning process seemed to go normally. When I tried to run the disc, it seemed to load normally until it got to a screen with the "streaks in the sky" wallpaper and then it stopped. There were no menus, messages, or anything except the wallpaper. I made two discs using a name brand with the same result. I know disc quality used to be an issue but I didn't think this was so these days among the name brands.
