Constant Disk Activity On New Laptop Slowing EVERYTHING Down?
Dec 27, 2011
Just got a new Acer aspire laptop for christmas. Everything works fine except that every time I turn it on or wake it up, there's about a 10 minute period of non-stop disk activity that causes every other application to come to a grinding hault.I downloaded process monitor and checked it out, and found the two most-accessed files are two TMP files called MSI7895.tmp and MSI8BDA.tmp, both in the Windows installer directory. No idea what either of these files are for.I'm thinking this has something to do with the tons of bloatware that came on this laptop. It's a 2.3 GHz, quad-core CPU with 4GB of RAM. I'd just really like to stop this so it doesn't take 3 minutes to open an Explorer window

Just got a brand new Samsung Series 7 laptop and everything was working fine until i started installing windows updates. The cpu is now stuck at around 15% load and there's constant disk activity too. I run msconfig.exe and disabled programs that I don't really use much, run disk defrag just too make sure the disk was working well. As a result my cpu is running hot (65 degrees) and the battery drains pretty quick.

I installed Windows 7 RC. When ever I am booted into Windows 7 one of my hard drives (probably not system drive - sounds like my secondary storage drive) is constantly working. Not very much but still making sounds.
I have completely turned off indexation, there is no automatic defrag going on. I have set a constant size to the paging file and there is no antivirus activity going on. The hard drive is making noise even when the system is idle for a long time and also when I am using it.
The processes tab in the task monitor shows no process that is using CPU.
What can this hard drive activity be?

I've been using Windows 7 since it was released and never had to reinstall so far.Unfortunately my System seems to have developed some issues which make work with the computer rather tedious. I have the impression that the issues are all related to a massive boot delay. Windows takes some 4-7 Minutes to boot. The masive delay starts after the logon screen. I have not been able to find out what is going on here and where the timeloss occurs. Once the machine has become usable - i observe some serious disc activity (led blinking constantly. This can go on for minutes.
I already tried to deactivate unnecessary startup programs, scan for malware. I frequently let ccleaner sweep the system.'d be very happy to see some opinions about this behaviour and perhaps find a way to resolve the issue, so I do not have to reinstall from scratch. I am aware that there is an inplace repair function in Windows 7 - this however only works with a system CD that contains Windows 7+sp1+all important updates. As I only have the original system CD I would like to avoid setting up a working boot cd.ps:[CODE]

I am having trouble lately with my disk drives. First of all the specs and then the problems :
[code]...
Second behavior, I think since last week, my activity led is pulsing every second and my main drive never seems to go to sleep while my three others do. This is bugging me deeply as I have no idea what exactly is goign on the system. There is NO viruses, NO malware. Windows has been reinstalled from scrath on fresh formatted partion. I've tried to boot the system in diagnotstic mode with the same issue. I do not know what is the problem but I find it very unpleasant. An other test I did, disconnect the RAID entirely and the pulsing continue.Do anyone of you have any idea of what's going on? Are both problem related somehow? Could it be a windows patch causing all of this as it started not so long ago while is was running perfectly before?

When I play 1080p video and there is lot of disk activity at the same time (virus database updates, someone copy something trough local network, DVD is burning...anyway - lot of hard disk activity) then the video shows very poor performance - stops and starts for sec, then stops, slideshows and so on (also with sound). When this happens the CPU is about 50-60% so CPU is not an issue. I also set the media player priority to high in task manager - still bad performance when hard drive activity is high.
I have AMD CPU 3GHz, 3,5MB RAM, 1GB ATI Radeion HD4850
I DID NOT HAVE ANY SUCH ISSUE ON XP...whats the problem?

I've had the computer for about a year, a custom build...it's been working fine, then all of a sudden the problem started & now I'm suffering serious lag & slow down even with the most simple tasks (like clicking on the start icon) the HDD light is on continually & I can hear the drive clicking away. It never stops. (Starts when the windows loading screen comes on)Boot time is also incredibly slow around 10 minutes to boot up.I've just done a clean install of Windows 7 pro x 64 and the problem still persists...no other software installed other than my graphics & sound card drivers. The workstation isn't connected to the net I use a laptop for all that/this.On Task Manager my CPU is 0% & my Memory 6% which is fine..The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7,200 SATA II.The programs causing this are mostly with-in "System" & SVChost" processes on the HDD.
For example:
Windows service profile
RtBackup
NTFS free space map
NTFS master file table
Winevt logs
I have read many threads about these type of problems but with never any clarification.I've got a ton of work to do...and I cant even open control panel under 1 minute right now.

With heavy(?) disk use, my system appears to stop disk activity. Resource Monitor shows nothing under Overview and Disk where there would be e.g. system and explore.exe listed as images before this condition.
I'm trying to copy 100-200GB from one disk to another. After some time, this condition happens but I can still to other things. The network is up, I can e.g. ping my LinkSys, ssh to work. Eventually, things will just freeze. Pulling the power cord is the only way to solve so far.
I did install new HW, a SATA controller, but can't remove it. The disk I'm copying to is 3TB WD Green. I need the new SATA controller to use > 2TB disks. I already know the old (onboard BIOS) SATA controller works, I've copied 500-1000GB overnight in the past. Right now, using smaller sized copies, things behave.
The new controler is a HighPoint Rocket 640L, basic disk step as before (i.e. no RAID). I tried manually updating to the latest Windows 7 64b drivers from HighPoint's site, but system tells me I have the latest.
I have a day or two before I can even RMA the adapter. I'd rather try a few things before ending up back where I am in a week if the next adapter has the same issie.

Whenever I try to log into my laptop I just get a deformed taskbar, everything is running like there's 30MB of RAM installed and I can't even open task manager, eventually resulting in me having to crash the laptop after 10 minutes because nothing will progress. The reason I'm able to post right now, is because I'm in safe mode.Safe mode boots fine, let's me log in, and I'd use it except.. well.. It's safe mode. I can't access any sound or video card drivers so there's not much I can do.[CODE]

My Win 7 (64 bit) computer with a Intel i5 760 CPU, 4Gb of ram and AT Radeon HD 7500 Graphics card has developed a problem with about 25% constant CPU activity and constant disc activity. Task Manager shows that this is due to the "NT Kernel and System" process, and it can't be stopped. The surprising thing is that I get exactly the same problem in Safe Mode with no connection to the Network, so what the heck is going on?

I have a WD Green drive which parks its heads after 8 seconds of inactivity. This is measured by "load/unload cycle count" in SMART, and WD rates the drive for 300,000 cycles. I have accumulated over 15,000 in the span of a few days, which obviously isn't good for drive longevity. I don't have a way to run the tool provided by WD to alter the timeout for the heads, so I need to figure out what is causing this frequent disk access. Prior to whenever this started (I'm assuming it was a few days ago, when I installed a new motherboard) I was averaging 0-10 load/unload cycles per day, depending on how often I accessed the drive.I checked activity with Resource Monitor and found nothing accessing the drive except for the very occasional access of BCD.log and the MFT. However, I'm seeing ~3-6 load/unload cycles per minute, so something is accessing the drive every 8-20 seconds.
I tried using procmon. I set it to filter only for activity on E: (the drive in question) and I unchecked all the default "exclude" filters; I saw nothing besides procmon accessing the drive. I ran it for a good 5 minutes. The drive is connected to an Intel Z68 SATA II controller. I have no other drives which park their heads so I don't know if this activity occurs on all my drives or not. Again, nothing shows in procmon or Resource monitor. What can I do to see what's accessing the drive?Tried so far:Disabling SuperfetchDisabling AV
Disabling Indexing

So recently my desktop PC has been freezing at random times, and then sometimes restarting after not responding for a couple of minutes (no BSOD, just restarts as far as I've seen). It sometime freezes as soon as I turn the computer on, while Windows is loading, and sometimes it will start freezing after an hour it's been on. Most of the time it will just freeze for around a minute, and then unfreeze, but sometimes it does freeze and then restart. By freeze I mean everything, mouse included, and ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work. Also at bootup sometimes, it will fail to detect my SATA hard-drive and hang at Detecting SATA drives at the bios screen. This will be following by a disk read error. This problem started occuring a couple of weeks a go, so I reinstalled Windows 7 and it worked fine after that.
Running Windows 7
Bios: Phoenix - AwardBios v6.00PG
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU E6550 @2.33GHz
2GB RAM
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8600 GS

I just reinstalled Windows 7 and I already feeling its a bit slow...Is it because of the Svchost? Or is just my laptop is getting old? (its five years old now) Does the Harddisk have any effects on the responsiveness of the operating system?
Also, my other laptop, when it boots, it gives me 'Windows 7" and "Ramdisk Option" What is that?

I have a Lenovo G560, about 8 months old. Lately, after about 2 hours use, it begins to get slower and slower until in the end it freezes.I have de fragged, run virus scans and done a registry cleaner etc, but it make no difference. It does not appear to be getting over heated as the fan kicks in and out, not permanently running.

Our setup is as follows: Users are in a remote location connected by satellite link to the domain server. The domain server is DNS and DHCP server for client computers. Because of the satellite connection data transmission has a longer than normal latency delay but transfer speeds are not bad (0.5 mps).I can understand that when logging in, a client computer might experience a longer login time as Windows communicates with the domain server to validate credentials. However, after logging in, are there network activities being performed by the client computer with the domain server on a permanent basis that would make the client computer much slower than normal while performing local tasks? Users report that when logged into the domain, their computers slow down significantly even when opening files on their hard disks. It might be that other issues are causing the problem, but I would like to understand better how the client - server relationship works when logged into a domain so that we can test further.

[Windows 7 Ultimate; Intel Quadcore 6600 2.4 GHz; Asus P5E Mainboard, 4GB RAMvia cable to BT Infinity router.]I have BT's Infinity Broadband, but something odd is happening with itand BT say Windows 7 itself is the problem.By way of comparison I have my little Samsung N210 Netbook (Windows 7 Starter edition) running directly beside (see the above specs) my desktop machine. The Netbook is connected wirelessly.I use Advanced System Care Pro, BT Infinity Desktop Help, and CCleaner to keep both machines (otherwise) singing.So. How come my little Netbook averages 25.4 Mb download speedwhile my super-duper desktop averages only 4.79? Those being regularly indicative figures, that's an 81% difference.

We have a 20Mb line with a 2Mb upload. When checking speed testing sites, we're always getting full speeds. When downloading using Steam or uTorrent (Anything that manages its own downloads) I can get 2.4 - 2.5MB/s download. But when I'm using any form of web browser, firefox, IE ect. Loading pages can take 10-20 seconds, pictures 30seconds-2minutes. Downloads are much much slower, around 500KB/s and while videos usually load fast enough they sometimes drop their connection and stop buffering.

Recently my computer has been freezing and slowing down a lot when I use it. At first I thought it was a driver issue since my computer only freezes whenever I am watching a video or listening to music, I think I installed the right driver but my computer is still freezing ( a strange side effect from the freezing is if there is any audio, it will slow down and start to stretch out). After a few minutes it will revert back to normal like nothing happened.
Also my computer isn't running smoothly anymore, many times when I type, the words jump to completion. When I scroll, it jumps and doesn't smoothly scroll down the page. I tried everything from defragging to updating every driver and program possible and still the problems persist.

trying to put my music collection into the computer using windows media player. Using MP3 format and "best quality". First cd rips quickly. subsequent ones are very slow, taking 15-20 mins. Is this a process of "copy protection" built into the cd's?
If so why when ripping a double cd does the first disc go quickly and not the second.
