Random BSOD When Copying Files To External USB Device?
Sep 7, 2011I often get random BSOD's when copying files to an external USB device. I haven't been able to tell what's triggering them. It can be a large group of files or sometimes even smaller files, so don't know if it's related to file size Am unfamilar with troubleshooting BSOD's.

Jul 27, 2012Just bought a new cyberpowerpc from Fry's, installed a 3rd hard drive (Western Digital 3TB). Everything seems okay except when I try to copy any large files/folders to the new drive. I'm using a folder that is 11.3GB with 686 files. I can copy it from drive 1 to drive 2 no problem. When I copy it from drive 1 or drive 2 to the third drive (the 3TB one), it will start copying then sometime soon after, explorer will close itself down and the computer will end up rebooting itself. Sometimes there will be a BSOD and sometimes it will just reboot without the BSOD.
I have tried to attach the dmp files etc...using the recommendations of the forum. I'd like to use this new drive for backups (it's the reason I got a new pc, my old one crashed and I didn't have a good backup system).

Nov 18, 2011Since I got Windows 7 I have learned it is the same as Windows Vista not much difference, well except the new boot loading screen. Anyway why does it take so long for this to copy or move files?I am copying moving 4GB of data from my USB to my external hard drive and it takes forever, it says 1 hour remaining, it;s all ready been here for good 40 minutes now.Why is windows 7 so slow and copying/moving files?

I recently talked my boss into letting me build windows based systems for our DJ's to use instead of a prebuilt DJ console that would cost more than twice what my design would. One of the biggest concerns we have is the ease of one of our DJ's to simply bring an external HDD with them and copy our music library while they are at a gig. Licensing and legal use of music is a top priority to us. All of my searches online have not yielded any useful information. I need to find a way to restrict a user from copying and moving files, but still give them access to play the music files. Is there a way to do this without buying an extra security program?

Aug 28, 2012i noticed something really strange. i tried copying three iso files from my laptop to my external HDD. the problem is that after one iso is copied the copying process stops and resumes again after a pause and after that it pauses again and the third file starts. why it pauses to copy? i tries usb 3.0 and 2.0.in usb 3.0 the spped is around 94-95K Mbps. but once it starts to copy the second iso it drops to around 30K Mbps.its same with both the external HDDs.

Sep 30, 2012A few months ago,I bought an External Toshiba E.Store 3.5" 1.5 TB.I use it on Acer Aspire One-Netbook Processor Intel Atom1.66GHZ,2gb ram When I wanted to copy some files,regardless the amount of the files,or their capacitive,the copy just ended well.I use Teracopy.A bit after,my copy is just freezing.Netbooks is working well,ram was not at high percents,neither cpu.I had to open Task manager to close teracopy.Other times, the -file copying- was ended well,other times not.I did a format to my netbook,because I have searched and I found that maybe on my operating system was the problem.After the format nothing changed.
After a lot of search again,I found that chkdsk may help on the solution of this problem.3 days ago,I pluged my hdd and the *disk checker*(sorry if this is not the name)appeared.AutoCorrect file system errors 2)detection and recovery of bad sectors on the disk?This check was going well,but hangs a lot of hours at a sertain number of file.I stopped the check,restarted windows,and opened Safe Mode to run check here.Same problem appears.Check hangs at the certain number of files.But my hdd seams to be working,like the blue light is blinking.I saw on a forum that one person had a complete full 2TB external hdd and he took 47 hours to made check done.I am desperate for help,I can't copy a file bigger than 700mb-1gb.
Copying 600K Files From External Drive To USB 3.0 Partition - Merge Folders?
Nov 24, 2012I just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).
Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that. The folder being copied that is being merged is called Drive(D), probably from a backup of Win 98SE being restored onto a Win XP machine, so it may resemble a system folder to Windows 7.
Moving External Drive Files From IMac To PC?
Oct 24, 2011I have just moved back from mac to pc. I have a 4 year old LaCie External drive that has everything backed up from my mac. I know most of it will be useless but I need my budget spreadsheet and want my photos, and stuff like that. Trouble is when I connect it to my new pc, Gateway One, is shows up in Devices and Printers but not as a clickable drive in My Computer. It's been tried on several other computers and laptops, all running windows 7, with the same result. Could this be because it was used on a mac? I thought it would at lest show up, then I could get off it what was usable. The paperwork that came with the drive says it's good on either pc or mac. Or could it be too old for windows 7? I did go to their web site and download drivers, didn't help. By the way, my son tried it on his works laptop, running xp. He's not allowed to install anything so he couldn't let the windows drivers run. We thought maybe it still might show up in My Computer, but it didn't.

Mar 20, 2012I've bought a Toshiba STOR.E D10 Zwart 1,5TB so that I can use e-SATA to connect it to my laptop. I've got a HP Probook 6555b with Windows 7 64bits. When I use the USB connection (this hard disk has both USB an eSATA) all works fine, no problem at all. When I connect it with the eSATA cable I can find the external hard disc and brwose through the files that are on it. However when I try to move files from my laptop onto the hard disk (or the other way around) after about 10 seconds it slows down and stops half way copying. Next Windows Explorer is not responding.

Moving/Copying The AppData Folder?
Mar 22, 2012I made a really dumb mistake last night while setting up a VPN. Long story short I deleted my user account. Now, I did not lose any data at all (the account's folder still exists, untouched, in the /Users folder), it is just the user account picture and log in information that are gone. I have no way (that I know of) of re-referencing it so that it appears on my log-in screen again.My issue is that I effectively lost some programs and all configuration files that were exclusively associated with that account. Which is years of config data that I would HATE to have to do again. My questions are as follows (which are two sides of the same coin really).
Is there some way to re-reference this user account so it shows up and loads up like normal on windows login once again? (The system displays it as "User Unknown")f not, is there something that I can do with the /AppData folders of the new (recently created) and old ("deleted") accounts to make my new account be just like the old one?
BSOD Running Torrent Seeding Files From External USB HDD 0x000000D1
Dec 11, 2012I get the BSOD while seeding in uTorrent mutliple files. I have a stable notebook, never got an issue for years. Occasionally get some BSOD, but for reasons, now I have BSOD i cant explain for myself. uTorrent can seed for some time, but if I leave it ,i find it with the following BSOD. I doesnt do it right away, after sometime. check screenshot.

Sep 13, 2009 I am new here and new to Windows 7 which I installed on the weekend in order to run my media through the Windows 7 MC.
I ran into a problem when I try to copy from external HD (USB external drives) or shared network folder.
Every time I try to copy something, and it doesn’t matter how I do it whether it is CTRL+C or right click and then Copy, Windows Explorer crashes.
This is very annoying since I have to then switch to Vista (dual boot) and do it from there.
Is this a known problem?
Are there any workarounds or solutions to this?

Oct 23, 2011I Image my C drive on the 2nd partition of the same drive. I then copied the image to an external drive. If I lose my drive that my C drive is on and then replace it with a new drive can I Image from my external drive to the new Hard drive and it will be the same size and make? The reason for this question is my image will be coming from a different drive than it was image to.

Jul 15, 2012I had a 2 TB, and 3TB Seagate Go HDs and decided they would be best used as internal drives, turns out they both crashed completely upon SATA connection in the motherboard, I first guessed probably due to the difference in boot record. Upon reformatting in NTFS, I have found that the drives run very sluggish, I have been debating on just buying a new USB drive and copying my files, then getting rid of these 2 HDs. This doesn't make sense to me as I used to think all HDs were the same, does anyone know any reason why these 2 external drives are killing my system performance after they were made into internal drives (also why would they completely crash before).

Feb 3, 2009I tried doing this. Example, game files/data from my XPdocs on C: to my Windows 7 docs on D: couldnt do it, just gave me a chime, no dialogue box or anything. Also tried to move a file from my desktop to either mydocs or to program files folder, same thing. After that, even took ownership of all affected folders/files, ones being moved and destination folder. Still the same.
Question: is there some type of security setting i am missing? anyone else test this? I have moved files to mydocs before, and now i cant move anything to there, has me confused now. Nothing special about a file or folder i am trying to move, permissions ect.
Tried both cut and paste, and copy, same problem either way. No protected files/folders involved

I'm using a laptop with internal wifi but I also have an external wifi dongle as I connect to my neighbours internet (I have permission and the passwords, etc). Both the internal and external used to work fine and both would have internet connection. But something recently has changed and now the internal wifi still works with both network and internet connection, but the external one only has network connection and no internet connection.The reason I use the external one is it gives much better signal strength than the internal one and, as said, both used to work just fine.Now I've tried uninstalling the external drivers and dongle and reinstalling it but no dice. I've tried doing the netsh stuff people have recommended in some of the search pages but no dice. Tried release and renew of IP, but no dice. I've disabled all firewalls but no dice (and I figure the firewalls would stop both connections anyway but I thought I'd try it

My 'D' drive is almost full due to too much music. I would like to move (not just copy) MOST of the music files from my internal 'D' drive to an External Hard Drive. However, for the music that I want to move off of the internal drive, I have numerous Playlists created.
If I move the music to an external hard drive (only plugging it in when I want to access those music files) will the playlists still know where the music has gone to? Or do I have to recreate the playlists?
