don't want to buy an expensive external optical drive so am trying to think of how to make a sata or ide internal optical drive into an external one for emergencies.anyone know if i can get adaptors for the power and data connections?have googled but no luck.oops found some build ideas on Internet - should have looked there first i suppose

I took out my internal optical drive from my Sony Vaio F13 laptop and put in SSD. Now I bought USB/SATA cabel and I connected the optical drive to the laptop, it is recognized in windows but it is treated as a hard drive (or removable disk). When I double click it in My Computer it says "Insert a disk into Removable disk. Is there a way to make my optical drive work via USB like this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using a Dell Inspiron 14 laptop. A few days ago, I noticed that my laptop has become incredibly slow (the system will hang sometimes, and continue as per normal after a while), and this coincided with my laptop beginning to make this weird, sharp beeping sound. At first I did not pay much attention to it, but later this was joined by several BSODs, and my laptop became even slower (games that usually did not lag was now hanging halfway through, and continuing as per normal after a lengthy period of 1 minute or so). I tried to find the origin of the noise, and I think it came from my Internal hard drive sector, and thus decided to open the sector up (in hindsight I probably should not have). After I replaced it, without doing much (just doing the usual IT-amateur stuff, wiping it and blowing it a few times), my situation has now worsened to the point that startup takes a much longer time, and finally now it hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen, but without the Windows 7 logo showing, and my screen later turns black.

I noticed that if I do anything to a file that is in an external drive, that file can not be saved under the same name (read only). In order to do so one must save it internally and then copy or move it to the external drive.So I did just that--I copied a file from taken from an external drive, saved it in the internal one and then copied it back to the external one. Now if I r-click the propeerties of these 2 same files and then go to the 'Security' tab a difference is immediately apparent: The internal one has -1- System & -2 My-computername (user-PCuser and -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) with all 3 accounts allowing all (full control, read, write, etc..). While the external drive has in Properties; -1- System -2- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) and -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) with this final 3d one (and different one) with no Allow for "full control, or modify or write. So how does one have all its files in this external drive behave and be equal to all the same files in the internal drive?Since -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) in the external drive is that which is differnt from the internal drive I was wondering if it is OK to delete this Permission or 'attribute' or whatever it is called and create instead one equal to the one in the internal drive -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators)? That's great for me as I use Carbonite and they only backup internal drives. I was wondering why Windows 7 sees it as an internal and I could fool Windows into thinking other drives were internal as well?

It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly.When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a 2 TB, and 3TB Seagate Go HDs and decided they would be best used as internal drives, turns out they both crashed completely upon SATA connection in the motherboard, I first guessed probably due to the difference in boot record. Upon reformatting in NTFS, I have found that the drives run very sluggish, I have been debating on just buying a new USB drive and copying my files, then getting rid of these 2 HDs. This doesn't make sense to me as I used to think all HDs were the same, does anyone know any reason why these 2 external drives are killing my system performance after they were made into internal drives (also why would they completely crash before).

After installing three or four updates yesterday my laptop now clicks the optical drive a couple of times as I start any video or music file on the hard drive. Not a fatal flaw, but, very irritating just the same. Did a system restore to the morning before the updates- same behavior remains. Installed updates again, removed them one at a time, same thing. Restored to over a week ago, same behavior! What is up with this clicking. The files start and play immediately, no problem there, I'd just like the optical drive to mind it's own business. Movie discs play fine, burns stuff fine, just go to your corner and SHUT UP!
I have an Alienware M14x R1 with a SSD - Crucial M4 in the main spot and the stock HD in the optical drive. I have never had any issues with any of this stuff before this clean install - and I have done clean installs previously. I also used Parted Magic to Secure Erase my SSD and HD before install.I am experiencing some pretty frustrating problems:
1. I have NO INTERNET CONNECTION (everyone keeps telling me to install drivers...how can I do this without internet connection??)
2. Windows is not recognizing my second hard drive in the optical drive even though it did when I was installing and showed it at the section where you can add new partitions etc
3. My display adpater is not working as I have a 1600x900 screen and I can only go up to 1024x768...
I bought this speakers a while ago for my older computer and recently i bought this new hp so im using them on my new hp desktop and ever since i bought the speakers they have allways made this high pitched noise .Now my HDD makes the same high pitched noise but not as loud as my speakers make it i feel like the speakers are just transmitting the sound tha the HDD is making but just alot louder?

Now when I place that in an enclosure and want to use it as an external HDD drive, it doesn't pick up the device. Through Diskpart I am able to give the drive a letter and access it, but when I "Safely" remove device, the Drive letters remain....

I'm using a laptop with internal wifi but I also have an external wifi dongle as I connect to my neighbours internet (I have permission and the passwords, etc). Both the internal and external used to work fine and both would have internet connection. But something recently has changed and now the internal wifi still works with both network and internet connection, but the external one only has network connection and no internet connection.The reason I use the external one is it gives much better signal strength than the internal one and, as said, both used to work just fine.Now I've tried uninstalling the external drivers and dongle and reinstalling it but no dice. I've tried doing the netsh stuff people have recommended in some of the search pages but no dice. Tried release and renew of IP, but no dice. I've disabled all firewalls but no dice (and I figure the firewalls would stop both connections anyway but I thought I'd try it

Since I got summer job in which my work-computers is changed frequently, I started using portable programs from my usb flash drive. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Iomega portable hard drive, which is compatible with windows 7, however, when running the Iomega Encryption Utility using the reconfiguration option to set a password for the hard drive, it told me you must format this drive before use, anyways, my windows 7 doesnt recognise it anywhere! yet before the encryption ran it did! in disk management it only shows my C drive, the Iomega showed up in my computer as a G drive but it doesnt now. Its like the computer cant see the hard drive! I read about formatting the disk but it wont give me that option when the device is plugged in.

For the first two weeks or so, I could eject my HD through "Safely Remove" but since then I get the usual "Generic volume is still in use" message, inspite of closing all processes that might possibly be using it.I keep the HD connected to my PC virtually all the time, even when I shut down and reboot. But every now and then, I need to disconnect it. And to do that, I have to shut down the computer first and then disconnect it.Whenever I update Windows, I see that a temporary folder is created in the HD while the updates are being downloaded which has led me to think that a process uses the HD but I can't find out which one it is and how to terminate it properly.There are no problems when I use the HD in other computers.

I don't have this trouble with any other drives, or elsewhere on my computer, so it seems somehow to be associated with this specific drive.Of course I check to make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is turned off.

Now I plug them in and their not visible anymore? Their shown as a usb or scsi drive but no assigned drive letter or their "name".Their showing in the Disk manager and I found I had to manually tell it to mount and assign a drive letter[then their useable]. I tried another removable drive that was USB2 & firewire and the same thing. USB2 ,eSata or firewire and their all not visable in explorer. Yet I can plug in a flash drive and I can immediately see it once loaded.Is there a switch in registry or somewhere thats controls this.All these drives were immediately available in file explorer previously? Now I am having to use the DM to manually mount and assign them to read/write to them.
