Accessing User Files From Another Computer?
Jan 24, 2011
I had a Dell Laptop with Win7 64-bit. But there was a problem and it wouldn't boot anymore. The problem is that there are some very important files in that laptop. So, I got that hard drive out and connected it to my Toshiba (Win7, 32-bit) as an external drive. I was not able to access the 'user' files from the dell. When I tried to open it, I got an error message 'access denied'. So, I went to properties --> Security --> Advanced, and changed the permissions to everyone. Now, when I open the folder 'Documents and Settings', it opens the folder on my Toshiba, and not the actual files that are on that hard drive. I need to get those files out of there.

I currently have a workgroup set up with a server (running Server 2008) and 4 identical (literally) computers. Each computer has certain shared files. There is no problem seeing or accessing the files on these computers.I am trying to add a fifth computer to the workgroup. I have added the new computer and can see the other 4 computers. However, every time I try to access any of the other 4 computers on the workgroup, I am asked for my network username and password. It doesn't matter what I put for the username and password - nothing works. It continues to say "Logon failure: unknown username or bad password".

a friend of mine is trying to access files residing on a vista pc residing on the same network as his 7 pc in order to copy them over. cunningly, both pcs have exactly the same network name albeit one in capitals and one in lowercase although i am pretty sure this does not mkae a difference. can anyone tell if this is where the problem lies, especially since another vista pc on the network shows up fine

So I've been using my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit install on my Sony AR670 laptop for a couple months straight now with no real issues but this one that started last week with no apparent cause and is getting very annoying. The system 'hangs' or 'freezes' in a way when I do certain things like create a new file/folder or select a file from a 'browse' file box, especially say when I upload a file to a forum, like this one, using the "Manage Attachments" option... I use Chrome but this happens even in Windows so I'm sure it's not Chrome related... it has something to do with file access is my guess.During the 'hang' I can still move the mouse and scroll windows but I can't press buttons, open menus, or issue any 'commands' if I do I get the windows 'alert' sound and nothing happens. The length of time of the 'hang' varies from a couple seconds to maybe 15 seconds or so when really bad.Because it's so hard to describe exactly I haven't had much luck searching for a similar problem. It also happens when renaming or moving files... The file will seem to revert back to its original name for a few seconds during which time I can't really do anything. If I try to rename it or move it again I get a message the file no longer exists then it will change to the name I gave it the first time.

I'm running on a relatively new install of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I recently (about 2-3 weeks ago) installed a new HD and decided to have a fresh start so everything was formatted followed by win 7 install. Everything has been running great up until mid day yesterday. Out of what seems like nowhere I experienced 6 or 7 BSOD's yesterday and from what I could tell they occurred when I tried to do any of the following: 1. Access drive D and play a video file (This is the new HD, it would instantly BSOD). 2. Access internet within 1 minute of startup.
Since yesterday I haven't had any BSOD's and have had the computer running, I haven't tried to play any videos off of HD and haven't reset my computer since (hoping that whatever it was has gone away, although I'm sure it hasn't). For the record I have accessed some music files on drive D without any issue, as well as several word and excel documents (not sure if that makes any difference?)I have a feeling it may have something to do with my new HD that I installed, but have no idea what it could be as it was running without issue up until yesterday (for at least 2 if not 3 weeks).
My system specs are as follows:S: Windows 7 64bit UltimateManufacturer BIOSTAR Group Model A740G M2+ Total amount of system memory 6.00 GB RAMSystem type 64-bit operating system umber of processor cores 2 isk partition (C) 272 GB Free (298 GB Total) isk partition (D) 1630 GB Free (1863 GB Total) isplay adapter type NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 other info:-all drivers should be up to date to the best of my knowledge- i've looked around and have seen a lot of recommendations to run memtest? I have yet to do soI've enclosed a system health report and minidump file as outlined on forum requirements.

at my place of work I have my own desktop PC which is running Windows XP, we are all using Windows Server 2008 and have the ability to connect from home using a VPN and RDP which is pretty pants due to how slow and choppy the whole experience is.ow, I have managed to establish the VPN and actually map the main shared drive on our service without the need to windows RDC however I cannot seem to do the same for my own desktop PC.I want to be able to map my desktop or the hard drive on my work PC but just cannot figure it out. I have tried mapping the IP address and then using my username and password however that doesn't work either.

i have been on various forums for advice but unable to solve - this is the problem -
* it turns on & I CAN get into advanced menus
* it will not repair itself no matter what
* it will not go into any other modes , safe Etc....therefore I cannot restore to factory settings etc....
* ive Tried all tricks such as F8, Alt & F11 etc..... to get into advanced menu settings - all lead to the black screen
* everything i click on enter leads to a black screen - only a white curser appears.
its as if there is no way of accessing the computer disc/ hard drive in anyway from boot up. there is clearly a hardware problem but i cannot access anything internal beyond ordinary & advanced menus i just keep being led to the black screen & no activity. the menus work & that is all. i run Windows 7 on a Dell inspiron 1564.

From my husband's Admin account, I deleted my own User Account, but the account is still there (with a lock icon on it) and I am unable to delete it (gives me the message that the folder is open or in use by another program). I changed the owner to my husband (checked the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects") as suggested on this thread and I still can't delete it.istory:- My user profile was corrupted, got the message that a temporary user profile was created.- Rather than going the route of going into the registry as suggested here, I deleted the account but kept the files (was this my mistake)?- When I went to create a new account, it appended HOME.DESKTOP to the end of my name

running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit here. I don't know if this is due to my wifi adapter or the connection or what. I use a wireless connection here, provided by the place we live, the signal is very weak on my desktop. At times when connect to it, it doesn't even load a webpage, but what happens is my mouse skips across the screen, buzzing comes outta my speakers just as the mouse skips, it's like having interference somehow and I just don't get how connecting to the wifi does this, the wifi is really weak, I don't even know why I can't connect, I mean the signal is there, I can connect, but it doesn't load a webpage.

I created a new standard account on my computer. I installed chrome and messenger onto it, then switched back to my admin account. I opened up chrome, and my history, themes, and all customizations were gone. It gave me some error that I failed to record. I tried to install a theme but it gave me the same error. I decided to uninstall chrome. But when I attempted to re-install it, it wouldn't work. I eventually gave up and tried to install firefox. It gave me an error something along the lines of "Profile is missing or inaccessible" I also attempted to open trillian, an IM program. Usually, it automatically logs in, but this time I had to manually type it in. But it would not log me in, giving me an error "unable to read from or write to the configuration directory for this account" I had a similar problem with yahoo messenger. Afterwards I discovered, my music files and videos I had on my admin account would not play, and gave me an error. The songs were erased off of my media player, and even though the files were still on my computer, none of them would play.Everything on my new account seems to work, but nothing on my admin account will work.

I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64x over my last copy of the same OS using the same disk, as Ive done in this manner twice before with complete success. This time however, when I go to my windows.old >> users file my old user account isnt there, while the public account is. I checked my disk usage and the whopping 129gb chunk of information that was my user account still exists somewhere, taking up space in a place I cant see. Furthurmore, I unticked the 'read only' box in the file properties of the whole windows.old file and while watching the names of all the affected subfolder and files whip by I caught glances of windows.old/user/xxxxx/music, pictures etc. So theyre obviously still there, just in a much less digitally tangible way. Soo...how I can possibly retrieve these files?

I've just spent 12 hours using WINDOWS EASY TRANSFER to transfer all my files which were on a 2TB Hard Drive to an extrenal 2TG hard drive, which I would then use to transfer the files to the new computer. The total size of the files were c900GB. The majority of these files are video files - video editing being the main reason for the high spec new machine. Both machines running Windows 7
My new system is:-
Sabertooth x79 2100 ROG motherboard
i7 3939k Processor
32GB RAM
1 x Intel 520 series 480GB SSD (Boot)
2 x Corsair Black 2TB HDD (1 for user files, 1 as a back up drive) Not RAID
I have installed all my programs on the new SSD and configered my user account (ROY) on the 1st 2TB HDD (there are no user accounts on the SSD).After waiting overnight for all my files to be transferred to the external drive, I started Windows Easy Transfer on the New computer. I went to the advanced setting to select that the files should be transferred to the ROY account on the new computer which resulted in the message"THERE ISN'T ENOUGH DISK SPACE AVAILABLE TO TRANSFER YOUR FILES AND SETTINGS" - Free up some disk space and try again. Is there any 'workaround' to get Easy Transfer to send the user files to the ROY account on the D:/ Drive, and the Windows files to the SSD C:/ Drive?

Whilst trying to join the local homegroup network, I found out the issue was that my WORK laptop was connected to a domain & unable to share files because of being connected to this EX company domain/network.Naively, without first checking consquences, disconnected from the WORK domain & made the computer use for home & renamed it. Upon doing so, was asked to re-boot.On re-booting, the adminstator login password had resorted back to the one when setup originally?? As my normal password was not being accepted. I must add - I NO LONGER WORK FOR SAID COMPANY AND HAVE NO WAY OF ACCQUIRING PASSWORD/NETWORK/DOMAIN ACCESS DETAILS ANYMORE!I then used the windows password unlocker tool (£20 paid) to gain access back to my laptop. Obviously now realising a lot of very important information, emails, all desktop icons & file locations were no longer where they were supposed to be I spent an hour searching everywhere... The hard drive is still saying it has 150gigabyte of use & certain files display more data in 'properties' than is actually displayed in the folder itself. After doing a little research it looks like all my files, emails etc are in this imaginery 'domain' that I am now unable to access at all & no longer have the details to re-join again! A few files are still dotted around where they are supposed to be but a lot no longer accessable. With no access details to re-join this domain, is there any way AT ALL of re-claiming these files?

While taking a look around my Windows 7 HDD in Ubuntu, which can see tons of files that Windows won't show you, I went into my user account named "owner" and I saw a bunch of what appears to be Windows Log or preference files. They have long random names and with weird file extensions that Gedit (Like Notepad for Ubuntu but much more advanced) won't open. File sizes range from 0 bytes to 6.2MB with the average size at 64 or 512KB in size. I would like to know if 1. They are logging data and sending it to Microsoft. 2. They are old Preference files that need to be cleared out. 3. Why such crazy file names?

I'm planning to re-install my OS and I'm backing-up my files. Right now my 'User' files (Desktop, Downloads, My Pictures, My Music, My Documents, and My Videos) are currently located in D: (I used the 'Location' tab in the properties to move each folder from C: to D: ) Now, my question is: Would my 'User' files that are currently located in D:, be deleted when I reformat and re-install my OS in my system partition (which is C:). This came into my mind because in my understanding of moving the 'User' files using the 'Location' tab, means that the files and folders are stored in D:, but still linked in C:
