System 'hanging' When Accessing Files In Certain Ways X64

Jul 17, 2010

So I've been using my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit install on my Sony AR670 laptop for a couple months straight now with no real issues but this one that started last week with no apparent cause and is getting very annoying. The system 'hangs' or 'freezes' in a way when I do certain things like create a new file/folder or select a file from a 'browse' file box, especially say when I upload a file to a forum, like this one, using the "Manage Attachments" option... I use Chrome but this happens even in Windows so I'm sure it's not Chrome related... it has something to do with file access is my guess.During the 'hang' I can still move the mouse and scroll windows but I can't press buttons, open menus, or issue any 'commands' if I do I get the windows 'alert' sound and nothing happens. The length of time of the 'hang' varies from a couple seconds to maybe 15 seconds or so when really bad.Because it's so hard to describe exactly I haven't had much luck searching for a similar problem. It also happens when renaming or moving files... The file will seem to revert back to its original name for a few seconds during which time I can't really do anything. If I try to rename it or move it again I get a message the file no longer exists then it will change to the name I gave it the first time.

What Are Recommended Ways To Migrate A System To A New Disk

Apr 6, 2011

I've got a windows 7 x64 machine and I need to migrate it to another hard disk. Currently its running on an old 160GB IDE (i know....) and I want to migrate the install to a pair of 500GB WD SATA2 drives.I know how to mirror the disks, but I need to find a way to migrate without a re-install. It's a long time since I did anything like this on windows (It's so easy on other OSs).I'd like to partition the new disk (say, 40GB) and migrate the current system to that. Then add the second disk and mirror it, create the second partition etc. So...what are the recommended ways to migrate a system to a new disk?

Hanging At Extracting Files

Jul 22, 2010

I got me a new 1TB HD and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (not USB install, actual new DVD. I was trying to install it. The initial parts were painfully slow but they worked.I got to the part where it Copies Files. Then it goes to Extracting Files and it stayed at 0% for about an hour (before I gave up). I could still move the mouse and I clicked on cancel (and then it did very little again).

Windows 7 Hanging - System Unusable?

Dec 5, 2012

We have a Maingear tower gaming system that is hanging after login for 20 to 30 minutes. This doesn't happen in Safe Mode; however we have reinstalled Windows 7 from scratch 4 times and reconfigured the SSD back to RAID 1 (former problem had them in another config). Patriot RAM 12GB passes with flying colors with Memtest 86+. We are at our wits end - tried just about everything other than dropping it off a tall building. We've removed extraneous cards, disabled legacy USB in BIOS, all to no avail. About 1 in 10 times it boots up and stays clean. Otherwise, it's useless and can't be used (just a spinning blue windows symbol).Even if you wait 1/2 hour and it clears up, it will rear it's ugly head later, making the system unusable.

This system has a clean install with only Zone Alarm installed (has the problem without Zone Alarm, too).We have very little to no BSOD and fan is running fine.Shall we pull the NVIDIA card? There was a shorted USB panel that was replaced by Maingear before this happened, but that may be a red herring. The panel works fine now. This is an i7 970 3.2 GHz 6 core system, ASUS X58 Sabertooth motherboardI thought it was hardware - not so sure now as Safe Mode seems stable

Accessing User Files From Another Computer?

Jan 24, 2011

I had a Dell Laptop with Win7 64-bit. But there was a problem and it wouldn't boot anymore. The problem is that there are some very important files in that laptop. So, I got that hard drive out and connected it to my Toshiba (Win7, 32-bit) as an external drive. I was not able to access the 'user' files from the dell. When I tried to open it, I got an error message 'access denied'. So, I went to properties --> Security --> Advanced, and changed the permissions to everyone. Now, when I open the folder 'Documents and Settings', it opens the folder on my Toshiba, and not the actual files that are on that hard drive. I need to get those files out of there.

Hard Disk Overload And System Hanging

Mar 20, 2012

I bought an acer 4830TG in august 2011. Here's the description: AS4830TG-2434G75MN | Product Model..Everything worked fine with it. It was a very good machine... So when it was stolen from me I bought the exact same model and things went sour:I burned the recovery discs and subsequently installed a fresh Windows 7 Ultimate x64.Then I carefully installed all the necessary drivers etc... Exactly as i did with the first one.The problem is that every time i start an application that read/writes to the hard drives intensively, everything slows down, hangs or crash. When making a copy from my desktop computer over the network (directly through a crossed cat5e cable), the throughput initially reaches 50-70 Mb/s and rapidly comes down to 10-15 Mb/s. At this point, I can't to do anything with my laptop while copying in background... My browser is unresponsive for several seconds at a time, then is responsive again, then is unresponsive etc... If I try to play a video with VLC it seems it can't buffer more than 10 seconds of video before buffering again for several seconds (I solved that particular issue by moving the video file to a ramdisk prior to playback)... Simply opening My documents or the control panel takes more than a minute.

On rare occasions, the system crash and I get a BSOD. Note however that if I let the copy finish without doing anything else, everything works fine except for the low throughput. I know I can expect more than 15 Mb/s because with the first 4830TG it was generally over 50Mb/s.This kind of behavior also occurs when I'm burning a disc, when torrent is checking a file, when I'm copying files from one partition to another etc.I can't figure out where lies the problem:

- all drivers are listed as "up to date" by windows update and there is no unknown device listed.
- RAM usage appears normal, the system is not overloaded with unnecessary applications. (At boot it uses about 1.2Go with AVG 2012 free, daemon tools, Malwarebyte's and dropbox)..

Accessing Users After Restoring Old Backup To New System

Nov 30, 2012

My laptop was stolen recently. However, I was lucky to have a back up (old, really old) that I can use to recover at least some of my data.I now have a new laptop and I restored the backup on it. However, I created a user name different from the two that are on the backup. If I now create the two users, will they automatically be linked to the files that were restored? Alternatively, is there a way to link all files to the new username?

Accessing The File System Of A Virtual Application?

Dec 7, 2012

I have setup some monitoring software in an XP Virtual Application. More specifically I used the "Virtual Applications: The 'Invisible' Third Mode" method described here.

My challenge is that I need to access the applications database file, and save it to a location on the host computer. It seems to me that the only way to save files from the Virtual Application is through the program itself, and because the program hasn't been designed to save the database file (e.g.: there is no "File - Save DB" command) I am stuck.

If I had setup a Virtual Machine and then installed the software into it I would have the advantage of being able to access the guest file system, however I would not have been able to start my monitoring software whenever a user logs onto the computer.

Is there any way of accessing the host system of a Virtual Application?

However, every time I try to access any of the other 4 computers on the workgroup, I am asked for my network username and password. It doesn't matter what I put for the username and password - nothing works. It continues to say "Logon failure: unknown username or bad password".

General System Instability When Accessing Hard Drive?

Jan 23, 2013

This December just been I got a 2Tb hard drive, a stock standard Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm. I have noticed in recent weeks, that when I access this drive, perhaps to copy files, read them, rename them, import files to it, download files to it, etc, etc etc, it causes some pretty shocking instability in my opinion. Programs at random will stop responding, as I type this, skype randomly froze while I was chatting to a friend, and it took 5 minutes to get it to close and restart. On top of this, windows explorer just loses it, it will hang to the point I cant even access task manager, file transfers will crawl along, and random explorer windows will briefly freeze. A corrupted windows install? Corrupted files? Any ideas? I will re-install windows if absolutely necessary, however if its a matter of corrupted files, the files are almost entirely irreplaceable, I would need a way to single out the problematic files and remove them, so I need a method to do this?

BSOD On Startup / Accessing New HD / Accessing Internet?

Feb 17, 2012

I'm running on a relatively new install of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I recently (about 2-3 weeks ago) installed a new HD and decided to have a fresh start so everything was formatted followed by win 7 install. Everything has been running great up until mid day yesterday. Out of what seems like nowhere I experienced 6 or 7 BSOD's yesterday and from what I could tell they occurred when I tried to do any of the following: 1. Access drive D and play a video file (This is the new HD, it would instantly BSOD). 2. Access internet within 1 minute of startup.

Since yesterday I haven't had any BSOD's and have had the computer running, I haven't tried to play any videos off of HD and haven't reset my computer since (hoping that whatever it was has gone away, although I'm sure it hasn't). For the record I have accessed some music files on drive D without any issue, as well as several word and excel documents (not sure if that makes any difference?)I have a feeling it may have something to do with my new HD that I installed, but have no idea what it could be as it was running without issue up until yesterday (for at least 2 if not 3 weeks).

My system specs are as follows:S: Windows 7 64bit UltimateManufacturer BIOSTAR Group Model A740G M2+ Total amount of system memory 6.00 GB RAMSystem type 64-bit operating system umber of processor cores 2 isk partition (C) 272 GB Free (298 GB Total) isk partition (D) 1630 GB Free (1863 GB Total) isplay adapter type NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 other info:-all drivers should be up to date to the best of my knowledge- i've looked around and have seen a lot of recommendations to run memtest? I have yet to do soI've enclosed a system health report and minidump file as outlined on forum requirements.

1. Install my old Win ME on a seperate partition?
2. I have a boot manager, so not a problem.
3. If I install ME, will it overwrite Win7, and can this be avoided?
4. Free is great, but if I MUST PAY, what's the best software for this?

Windows 7 Windows Explorer Hanging Up System

Sep 19, 2012

I have two problems dealing with Windows Explorer on my 32/64 bit microsoft MSI Laptop. I use Firefox browser not Windows Explorer which keeps getting involved/active anyway I guess.Whenever I try to use the search feature (for the computer not the internet) the computer gets hungup and says Windows Explorer is not responding what do I want to do so I select Stop Program and it usually does stop but once or twice had to shut it down.Don't know why this is happening and if anyone has ideas I'd love to hear them.So - I figured to just remove Windows Explorer but I can't find it anywhere on my computer. On two separate methods to remove it Windows Explorer is not on the list and if I go into search looking for it I get hung up SPINNING WHEEL AGAIN.Which is interesting because I have the same problem for different reasons I guess right now on my Apple Snow Leopard too so I'm having a special I guess on SPINNING WHEELS. I forget who did that song back in the 70s but maybe I should look it up.

Computer Failing Randomly In Different Ways

Sep 26, 2012

it started about a few months ago, when my computer wouldn't let me play games or Internet videos one day suddenly, the screen would turn green and it would say a "graphic driver failed and has now been recovered" i updated the drivers and it fixed it for ages up until yesterday. i moved my computer onto a new desk and suddenly it started going weird again, it was failing to start up, crashing 2/3 times when it was on the windows logo, then crashing and emitting a annoying buzzing noise, which i fixed by updating the system and graphic drivers again, but now it's gone back to doing the "graphic driver failed and has now been recovered" error, stopping the video and or window that i'm using like msn or skype for instance. also sometimes the screen will just go a bright white and it has to be reset because you cannot see anything else on the monitor. tried with different monitor still same issues.

Files Are Listed By Carbonite As System Files After Adding Tag?

Jun 12, 2011

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and having the same problem. You can easily resolve the "Hidden File" problem by right clicking on the file, select Properties, and remove the check box next to "Hidden". If you tagged all the photos in a folder, simply select all (ctrl-A) and do the same. It solved the hidden file problem for me without having to show all hidden files. The problem I'm running into that I can't fix is that even after doing this, Carbonite now recognizes these files as system files and refuses to back them up. Even if you try to manually force Carbonite to back them up, it immediately unselects the check box. Hopefully somebody knows of a solution. It's weird, because I was tagging photos just a few weeks ago, and didn't have any problems at all. I don't know if there was an update at some point that screwed this all up.

My Computer Keeps Hanging

Aug 25, 2012

in these past few days, long, 30-second hangs have been occurring increasingly frequently, with no more than a few seconds between hangs today. It starts out one program not responding at a time, then spreads to all the rest of the programs. Sometimes it's so bad that the computer ignores ctrl-alt-delete. I don't know what's causing it, but it is made more perplexing by the fact that no more than 10% of the i7-2600K cpu is being used at any time, and the programs only use 3-4 GB of 16 RAM.
