Deleted User But User Files Are Undeletable?
Jan 2, 2012
From my husband's Admin account, I deleted my own User Account, but the account is still there (with a lock icon on it) and I am unable to delete it (gives me the message that the folder is open or in use by another program). I changed the owner to my husband (checked the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects") as suggested on this thread and I still can't delete it.istory:- My user profile was corrupted, got the message that a temporary user profile was created.- Rather than going the route of going into the registry as suggested here, I deleted the account but kept the files (was this my mistake)?- When I went to create a new account, it appended HOME.DESKTOP to the end of my name

I have a laptop from my employer that I want to return as my contract is ending. However I am keen to ensure that I delete all my personal info as I also have work for another contract on it which is quite commercially sensitive (unfortunately I had a period when income would not allow me to have a second machine to keep everything separate). Naturally I have transferred everything I want to another machine and so that is safe.I have deleted everything I want to from the (dell) laptop, and used CC cleaner to wipe the free space, but I note that there is a file still left in one folder with a name that refers to the other company. If the first company sees that name they may think I have leaked info to a competitor and not want to offer me another contract later this year. I have tried all I can to delete the file but I get an error message saying it can't be located (0 bytes) which I assume is because I have already deleted it. I have tried logging off / on 10 times and tried to find the file but of course it is not actually there. I have two questions, how can I delete this ghost file, and / or how can I delete my User Account so that when I return the machine, nothing can be recovered? Of course because it's a company machine, although I have admin rights as I need to be able to install programmes etc; I may not have Full rights. I have tried to add another user so I can log on as that user to remove my existing account, but I get an error message about Trust accounts.

I'm planning to re-install my OS and I'm backing-up my files. Right now my 'User' files (Desktop, Downloads, My Pictures, My Music, My Documents, and My Videos) are currently located in D: (I used the 'Location' tab in the properties to move each folder from C: to D: ) Now, my question is: Would my 'User' files that are currently located in D:, be deleted when I reformat and re-install my OS in my system partition (which is C:). This came into my mind because in my understanding of moving the 'User' files using the 'Location' tab, means that the files and folders are stored in D:, but still linked in C:

I just got a new computer. I had my User Account setup, had a password on it. I was making sure Windows was up to date, had to restart, then restarted on its own again(I'm assuming part of the update), and when it booted back up, it said my account has been disabled. Please contact your system administrator. I can sign in under Administrator, or Other User. The password I set up with my account doesn't work for Administrator. Is there a default password?

I'm unable to delete a user administrator account that was created by a program on Hiram's boot disk. The user account was created to delete a password on another administrator account.I can run 'control userpasswords2' and delete the account, I can delete the account the normal way in User Accounts Control Panel, but each time I reboot, the account reappears. When I delete the account I can log off and log back on without seeing the deleted account. It's when I reboot that I have the problem.

In trying to streamline my wifes Laptop (Win 7 64bit), I deleted her user account as she didn't like having to login and give herself permission for various actions all the time.Obviously this was the wrong way to go about it.However when I went to re-create the account using the same User name, Windows 7 treats it as a different account so she now can't access any of her items including documents, favourites and hundreds of photos.

A couple of months ago I had to take my HP TouchSmart in to get a new fan put in, when It came back it had a user account called 'test' on it. I assumed the repair guys set it up to test something but I've tried deleting it and it just shows back up at the next login. As far as I can see there's nothing on it so I don't know why it won't delete, does someone know how I can get rid of it?

I had to do a system restore to a prior point (two days ago) to fix a problem on a windows 7 dell PC. It worked but it moved all of my files and user profile to my C drive. I no longer see my user account when I go to start computer. I did find my files (at least some of them) under the c drive in C/OS/Users. Is there a way to automatically get them all back where they orginally were rather than attempt to manually move them and hope I'm placing them in the correct area? I also seem to have lost all of my bookmarks and cannot recover them on Firefox - is there any way to get them back?

So a new box recently built, when booted, defaults to the local administrator account. This is a Windows 7 machine for a Linux guru that doesn't want to be bothered pressing more buttons than is necessary, if you get my drift. So my question is, after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del...how do I dictate to Windows that the preferred used is "HisDomainAccount" on our company domain, as opposed to the local admin account?

Earlier today I turned on my Toshiba laptop (Satellite P855-S5200) and got some sort of error screen, and then it brought me to a screen asking if I wanted to do a system repair or start windows normally. I chose system repair, but then it seemed to get stuck in that process (It was taking forever and nothing was happening), so I turned off the laptop (I know, big no no), booted in safe mode, and did a system restore to a restore point from about a week ago. The "starting Windows" screen came and went, no problem. Everything seemed fine till I got to the User Selection screen (the default blue one with the little hummingbird or whatever). Then it just sat there on that screen. I could see the hummingbird and the little squiggly lines, but there were no buttons to click my user. I just let it sit there, and after about 5 minutes, the user names popped up, and I was able to continue using the computer without any problems, no other speed issues whatsoever. It now makes me wait every time, always about 5 minutes, before the user names pop up. It does this when I restart the machine and when I try to switch users.
It is a Pentium Core i7
2.3 Ghz
8 GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

I changed the values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList in order to move the default user locations to my second partition. I then created a new user profile but when I try to login I get the message 'The User Profile Service failed the login'. When I set these values back to normal, new accounts work fine but I really want my user accounts on the second partition.

I changed a user from admin to standard after creating a new admin account. When I boot into the standard user, I am prompted by UAC for the admin password for 4 programs to start. All the programs are ASUS utilities that came with mymotherboard.I have checked the permissions of the programs and the User group has full control. Also, these programs do not show up in the MSCONFIG startup tab. I want the utilities to run but do not want to have to authenticate every time I boot

I am a lab technician for Microsoft classes at a community college. One of our students somehow messed up his hard drive. The computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. The system has two administrator accounts and one standard user account. I am still able to logon with those accounts and there are SID keys for each of these users in the registry.
Now when we create a new user, the account is created without any problems. The user shows up on the logon page and after running the net user command, it shows up there as well. When I try to logon with the new user, I get a message: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
None of the new user accounts show up in the registry. The other anomaly that I see is that the Default User folder is missing in each of the Users subdirectory for the three accounts where I have no problems.
I have read the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 947215 and none of the methods apply to my problem. I also checked Local Group Policies and the Do not logon users with temporary profiles setting is not configured.

How do I map existing User Folders to a newly created User Account?I had existing User Folders on drive D. I added a new drive C and installed the OS on C but changed default location of User Folders to D. Now my existing User Folders are in the Users folder on D but there is no User Account associated with them. If I create a user account with the same name will it map to the existing folder within Users?I did a test of this. I created a folder called Test within Users then created a User account called Test and logged in. It created another folder within Users called Test.Computername.

Windows XP Remote Desktop Behaviour is desireable. that is, when one account is logged in, if another account is tried to use to log in remotely from another computer, then the 2nd user cannot connect and it is indicated who is currently logged in.
Windows 7 Default behaviour is to allow the second user to try to disconnect the first user through a query message which has an idle timer.
Is there any way to change the behaviour back to windows xp, where 1) disconnection of the 1st user session is not possible, and 2) it is indicated which user is signed on?

I had a Dell Laptop with Win7 64-bit. But there was a problem and it wouldn't boot anymore. The problem is that there are some very important files in that laptop. So, I got that hard drive out and connected it to my Toshiba (Win7, 32-bit) as an external drive. I was not able to access the 'user' files from the dell. When I tried to open it, I got an error message 'access denied'. So, I went to properties --> Security --> Advanced, and changed the permissions to everyone. Now, when I open the folder 'Documents and Settings', it opens the folder on my Toshiba, and not the actual files that are on that hard drive. I need to get those files out of there.

I created a new standard account on my computer. I installed chrome and messenger onto it, then switched back to my admin account. I opened up chrome, and my history, themes, and all customizations were gone. It gave me some error that I failed to record. I tried to install a theme but it gave me the same error. I decided to uninstall chrome. But when I attempted to re-install it, it wouldn't work. I eventually gave up and tried to install firefox. It gave me an error something along the lines of "Profile is missing or inaccessible" I also attempted to open trillian, an IM program. Usually, it automatically logs in, but this time I had to manually type it in. But it would not log me in, giving me an error "unable to read from or write to the configuration directory for this account" I had a similar problem with yahoo messenger. Afterwards I discovered, my music files and videos I had on my admin account would not play, and gave me an error. The songs were erased off of my media player, and even though the files were still on my computer, none of them would play.Everything on my new account seems to work, but nothing on my admin account will work.

I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64x over my last copy of the same OS using the same disk, as Ive done in this manner twice before with complete success. This time however, when I go to my windows.old >> users file my old user account isnt there, while the public account is. I checked my disk usage and the whopping 129gb chunk of information that was my user account still exists somewhere, taking up space in a place I cant see. Furthurmore, I unticked the 'read only' box in the file properties of the whole windows.old file and while watching the names of all the affected subfolder and files whip by I caught glances of windows.old/user/xxxxx/music, pictures etc. So theyre obviously still there, just in a much less digitally tangible way. Soo...how I can possibly retrieve these files?
