Missing User Files In Windows.old?
May 18, 2011
I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64x over my last copy of the same OS using the same disk, as Ive done in this manner twice before with complete success. This time however, when I go to my windows.old >> users file my old user account isnt there, while the public account is. I checked my disk usage and the whopping 129gb chunk of information that was my user account still exists somewhere, taking up space in a place I cant see. Furthurmore, I unticked the 'read only' box in the file properties of the whole windows.old file and while watching the names of all the affected subfolder and files whip by I caught glances of windows.old/user/xxxxx/music, pictures etc. So theyre obviously still there, just in a much less digitally tangible way. Soo...how I can possibly retrieve these files?

From my husband's Admin account, I deleted my own User Account, but the account is still there (with a lock icon on it) and I am unable to delete it (gives me the message that the folder is open or in use by another program). I changed the owner to my husband (checked the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects") as suggested on this thread and I still can't delete it.istory:- My user profile was corrupted, got the message that a temporary user profile was created.- Rather than going the route of going into the registry as suggested here, I deleted the account but kept the files (was this my mistake)?- When I went to create a new account, it appended HOME.DESKTOP to the end of my name

On Windows 7 that I am having here I have number of users using it and they have their account as well on it. Well that is not the issue there. Now I have seen that when the user tries to login to the account he can see a message saying that the user profile is not loaded correct manner. After that it just gets the user logged in an account. After seeing the login I have seen that Windows make the loggin for that user in with a temporary profile.

Last night, I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on my new solid state drive; and labelled such as drive W: (my Windows drive; am I not clever?). Because of this, my C: / drive inherently remained. All of my data on said drive is evident based on its size; however, my original user folder is missing; even when enabling hidden files and folders; and attempting to access such results in an Access Denied error. I have well over 100 gigabytes of data in said folder and can not afford to lose any of itone of the reasons that I purchased a solid state drive was to copy most of said data in the first place.

I was trying to get into a hidden subfolder to delete a file from a old program. It asked for admin person's. I hit Ok and it look about 10min for windows to update the folder. The problem is that after that now all my folders in my profile are gone. My music, pictures, and everything. I rebooted and loged back in but they are still all gone. How can I my profile folders back? I know there is just something I need to uncheck. I can see that all the information is still in my laptop because checking my HD space I see that nothing was deleted since I have over 50gigs of music.

I came across this issue this morning on my home PC. I have a Windows 7 64-bit PC with three profiles, my wife's, mine, and my daughter's. Previously when someone tried to log in all three profiles would be displayed so each profile could be selected. However this morning instead of seeing the three profiles I see two options: the active profile and a button that says other users. I select other users and I can log on to any profile so nothing appears to be missing. If I power the system down, when it comes back up I see the last profile logged on and the other users option.

While taking a look around my Windows 7 HDD in Ubuntu, which can see tons of files that Windows won't show you, I went into my user account named "owner" and I saw a bunch of what appears to be Windows Log or preference files. They have long random names and with weird file extensions that Gedit (Like Notepad for Ubuntu but much more advanced) won't open. File sizes range from 0 bytes to 6.2MB with the average size at 64 or 512KB in size. I would like to know if 1. They are logging data and sending it to Microsoft. 2. They are old Preference files that need to be cleared out. 3. Why such crazy file names?

As much as I hate it I'm contemplating leaving XP behind. I still prefer XP but ..
Anyway the one BIG issue for me is my seeming inability to copy/modify files in user account folders ..places where I want to keep my many many years of archived emails, etc. This whole encryption thing for user settings really annoys me.

I just finished installing Windows 7 Professional x32 and had a problem with deleting the windows.old because of the permission bug. Well I managed to delete the Windows.old by editing my security and user however when I log-offed, I saw another user account that I think I've mistakenly made while editing the security in the properties of a folder in windows.old. My problem is, the delete function gone! The mistakenly made user is Administrator. When I logged in Administrator, a pop-up appeared saying that it is a temporary user account.

I saw on microsoft site that users would benefit by using ssd as boot drive and have users folders and personal data on second drive may be even installed programs. Making backups of personal data easier and also if you have to format the drive with the os you don't have to move personal data. They don't say how to do this (although one place on their site they say go to the folder go to properties and change location of folder, which many people have had issues with this and it doesn't allow you do do this with all folders and it doesn't let you move the users and programs with out issues or weird broken workarounds registry edits).
1.) What I need or what we need to make or find is a step by step guide on how to do a dual drive set up that doesn't mess up the os, and doesn't allow the OS or programs to write to the old location.
2.) Also make a list of everything that could me moved or stored on the 2nd drive instead of on the SSD so that it takes up less room. Or move things to the normal drive that make many reads and writes to the ssd, that would shorten its life span with no performance gain.
3.) Also make a list of the items and fils and folders that would be best on the SSD for performance reasons stability ect, temp files etc., things that would make the computer and OS and programs run quickest.
Additional Information : Windows 7 OS to install on SSD as boot drive or system drive, and have all user files and folders, and maybe some or all program files to install or reside on the 2nd drive normal hard drive. How do you make SSD your primary drive and all data and files on your second hard drive normal spinner hard drive with out registry edits etc.

I don't know what I did but the main user account (and another) is missing at the login screen. I managed to create an administrator's account which is visible but I can't see the other user accounts at login or in the user accounts control panel. I've activated and verified that the missing user accounts are active by using net user "username" /active:yes command prompt. The user's folder's are still on the hard drive

Having turned on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 I found my user accounts to be missing and was left with an Administrator account. It seems that the system has reverted to a very old restore point. I have tried using the restore points (recent ones are displayed, but I get the 0x80070057 error). My data seems to be intact.I have Windows and all programs stored on an internal SSD-drive and the data on an internal harddrive. I also have a recent Acronis image on a NAS. I am hoping there might be a way to solve the problem without using the image.I have tried booting in Safe Mode, but the restore points are still not functioning.
EDIT: I remembered that I had used a new USB-stick which would not eject correctly, before turning off the computer. I tried reinserting the USB-stick before restarting the system and... everything went back to normal.

I probably got overly ambitious with a disk cleanup utility and now several functions of windows 7 don't work. New updates don't install, other updates that I DID install are missing, I am unable to run certain games, and I can't run SFC /scannow.However virus scan updates appear to be fine. What is the best way to fix this? I have an old backup I did with Norton Ghost on disk but something is wrong with the second disk so I can't use to to reinstall the entire backup but I might be able to extract some old files if I knew which ones to extract. I am running Window Seven Home Premium. It is a legal copy. I got it directly from Microsoft. If I try to run SFC /scannow from Windows I cannot get it to show up or do anything. Its like I never did anything. If I try to run SFC /scannow from the boot CD using this command
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f: /offwindir=f:windows
I get this error messge:
Windows Resource Protection Could not run the repair service IF I try to run the repair outlined here:[URL]I get an error saying Windows cannot find the file specified. My computer specs are

I have an Advent Roma 2001 configured, in PC World style, with a "recovery partition" alongside the system partition and, after resolving a hard disk problem, I found that the machine would not start/boot Windows 7. clearly some necessary files are missing or corrupted, but the normal system recovery tools have not solved the problem(s). I'm familiar with the process for resurrecting XP, but not its counterpart for Windows 7 the files and steps for doing this are rather different. it would seem that pretty much everything else is in place on the hard disk, but certain recovery programs report "0" Windows installations when Win 7 is still in place where it was before the disk problem, e.g. it is available to be selected by the main recovery/startup program...this prog can "see" it, but can't access/boot it.I can breathe some life into this anaesthetised device sooner rather than later...I may as well work my way through the whole lot rather than using a trial and error method that might take a long time.

I have Windows 7. I was installing i-tunes and when it asked to restart my computer I restarted it. When it logged back in the desktop was like in the beginning - the desktop theme was some default picture not the one I had put on, no additional programs were not installed and the worst part - my user folder on the desktop was completely empty! All of the folders My Music, My Pictures etc. had only Sample Pictures and Sample Music in them. I tried searching for my files but they cannot be found. Even worse - in My Computer the Local Disk is shown to be almost empty, like all of my files hadn't been there. So is there any way I can find and restore my files?

Just got all the parts yesterday, put i all together today, all is running fine.Just in case i'll post the components:
Gigabyte 990fx-ud3
Amd fx-8120
Gigabyte hd8950 OC
HyperX 2x4GB 1600Mhz
So i bought Windows 7 Home Premium from the same store i got this at (Webhallen, pretty much swedens largest component retailer) to replace the standard Home edition (which i got with my "old" packard bell!).
I have 2 HDDs, one from the packard bell (1tb) and one i recieved from a friend, a 320gb seagate. I ran with both in my packard bell for a while, using the 320gb for the system. It ran without any problems. So, i boot the CD, go through the setup and format the 320GB. (I also formatted some reserved space for OEM files from the Packard bell harddrive since i won't be using the packard bell any time soon).I proceed with the installation. The copying of the files goes very quick and when it reaches the expanding of files it takes ages before it finally comes to the error:Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070017.Immedieatly i whipped up the laptop and googled it, trying the different "sollutions" to no avail, like simply trying to install again without rebooting, taking out a RAM stick and only running with one in the master slot, taking out all excess Harddrives etc etc. i also ran Memtest86, clean, no errors!
I tried install Ubuntu on it, but that didn't go well either. It loaded for ages and then i got a very strange horizontal black and white striped screen, the black stripes being jagged and pixelated.I found my old windows 7 home cd from my packard bell and tried installing with that one. Same result, Error code: 0x80070017.

I had a Dell Laptop with Win7 64-bit. But there was a problem and it wouldn't boot anymore. The problem is that there are some very important files in that laptop. So, I got that hard drive out and connected it to my Toshiba (Win7, 32-bit) as an external drive. I was not able to access the 'user' files from the dell. When I tried to open it, I got an error message 'access denied'. So, I went to properties --> Security --> Advanced, and changed the permissions to everyone. Now, when I open the folder 'Documents and Settings', it opens the folder on my Toshiba, and not the actual files that are on that hard drive. I need to get those files out of there.
