Running Hijackthis, I noticed Multiple system32 files missing and (unknown owner).Some of these are important files. I just loaded windows 7 on this new Giadia N20 pc and then updated 7 online frome windows and ran hijack this again; same problem. Does anyone know how to fix this
View 3 RepliesI have a good sony vaio from 2010 with a win7 home premium, 4 Gb Ram, 500Gb HDD, 50 Gb available currently. I know various System32 files are missing from information from a HijackThis Scan yesturday, eg lsass.exe. Explorer.exe does not handle folders well-double clicking should open any folder but instead it defaults to trying to open it with the first available software in the context menue, which happens to be VLC Media player. This is a known problem, to do with registry damage and/or windows explorer, not to do with VLC. I have been diligent with updating drivers, and am currently using Slimdrivers to identify further improvements to my driver lineup.
I will add a scan results from tweaking com windows repair after this post. Avast interenet security and Malwarebytes are up to date and scan have found nothing lately. MBAB had to be uninstalled and reinstalled today due to some sudden loss of the signatures update file(I think), but is running well again now. I wish to go through a range of tests and find out about some procedure to restore these corrupt system files. I am an advanced home user but have run out of idea with this problem.

View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently installed Windows 7 64 bit on my main hdd (had previously had it installed as 32 bit). Now my back-up drive gives me this error. The back up drive does not have windows installed on it, and is not a boot drive. But when it is connected I get this message: "Windows root system32 ntoskrnl exe missing or corrupt." In order to boot on my main drive, I have to disconnect the back up drive.
I don't understand where to reinstall the missing file - if I put it in the Windows 7 files, won't that mess up my main drive?
I recently upgraded from WinXP x32 to Win7 Ultimate x64 and kept getting the:"Windows rootsystem32 toskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt" when attempting to boot.
My system:
CPU: Core2 Quad Q8300
Hard Drives:
Primary (System) = Western Digital 300GB 10,000rpm
Secondary (Data) = Western Digital 1T-GB 7,200rpm
*External cloned CasperXP backups for BOTH on matching HDs -- However the backup Sys HD is still configured w/WinXP x32 until I can get all problems ironed out.
Problem Discovered:Upon booting the OS is pointing to the Secondary HD as Primary,however, once booted the C: drive is indeed the intended 300GB and Secondary is the 1T-GB HD.
How Discovered:I needed to relaunch the OLD XP system to access some old Firefox Bookmarks so replaced Sys HDs. Had to reconfigure boot sequence to get OLD x32 OS HD to boot (successful). Saved Bookmarks and shut down. Replaced the Old x32 Sys HD with the New x64 Win7 OS HD. Then got the above error repeatedly. Played with boot settings and BIOS settings for an hour before identifying that the x64 Win7 OS would ONLY boot with the Secondary Data HD listed as the Primary Boot Device. Do note that the OS files are all on the 300GB Primary even as the boot sequence points to the secondary HD.
QUESTION:Is it possible to correct this situation WITHOUT having to do a clean install of Win7 x64 with the 1T-GB Secondary Data Drive disconnected, in other words doing a clean install with ONLY the 300GB Primary connected?

I know that it is possible and that this computer is capable of running Windows 7, and I have the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade package. However, there was some damage done by a virus on this computer. The virus was removed, but there are System32 files that are damaged as a result. The owner of the computer had this machine custom built, and they don't have any of the disks for Windows or anything to try running a repair. I am wondering if running the upgrade will fix the problems with System32 files or if they will even be a factor in the upgrade.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI noticed my laptop being slow and so I checked the active processes. Found an unknown process dllhost.exe using a massive portion of CPU. A friend of mine managed to locate file and alter it so that it was restricted to only the admin of the machine (me), along with another file below it (dllhst3g) � was worried that this was some sort of infection that went unnoticed by my antivirus software which at the time was Stop Sign. Since locking files computer worked faster but have been unable to scan computer for infections as Stop Sign couldn�t be update for unknown reason. Since then have been infected with virus which stopped me getting to cmd tool, task manager and changed desktop background. Started laptop in Safe Mode with networking, got a copy of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which managed to find the problem and delete it. Then was advised to use Avast anti-virus and had no problems since. My main problem is that the 2 files are still locked off and I am wondering how important those processes are? Also, my primary concern is the sudden inability to perform administrator tasks. I am the only user on my laptop and am an administrator according to profile on Control Panel, but when trying to perform Microsoft Windows Update receive pop-up message saying: You need to provide administrator permission To complete this task, you need to log in as an administrator or ask an administrator to complete the task for you. One of the updates to be downloaded is Windows 7 Service Pack. gain admin privileges again and let me know how important the dllhost and dllhst3g files are and/or how to unlock them?

In order to make an older program run, I have to copy a stack of dll/ocx files into System32, and then register them. Yes, it's crappy design, but it's a game editor for an older game, and I'm evidently the last tech-savvy admin. That, or a sucker.I copied them onto the desktop, and am trying to copy them from there into the system32 directory. I hit the UAC prompt, and select continue. Then it tells me I need to provide permission for it. I am a local admin (as well as a domain admin).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64x over my last copy of the same OS using the same disk, as Ive done in this manner twice before with complete success. This time however, when I go to my windows.old >> users file my old user account isnt there, while the public account is. I checked my disk usage and the whopping 129gb chunk of information that was my user account still exists somewhere, taking up space in a place I cant see. Furthurmore, I unticked the 'read only' box in the file properties of the whole windows.old file and while watching the names of all the affected subfolder and files whip by I caught glances of windows.old/user/xxxxx/music, pictures etc. So theyre obviously still there, just in a much less digitally tangible way. Soo...how I can possibly retrieve these files?

New updates don't install, other updates that I DID install are missing, I am unable to run certain games, and I can't run SFC /scannow.However virus scan updates appear to be fine.What is the best way to fix this? I have an old backup I did with Norton Ghost on disk but something is wrong with the second disk so I can't use to to reinstall the entire backup but I might be able to extract some old files if I knew which ones to extract. I have an Advent Roma 2001 configured, in PC World style, with a "recovery partition" alongside the system partition and, after resolving a hard disk problem, I found that the machine would not start/boot Windows 7. clearly some necessary files are missing or corrupted, but the normal system recovery tools have not solved the problem(s). I'm familiar with the process for resurrecting XP, but not its counterpart for Windows 7 the files and steps for doing this are rather different. it would seem that pretty much everything else is in place on the hard disk, but certain recovery programs report "0" Windows installations when Win 7 is still in place where it was before the disk problem, e.g. it is available to be selected by the main recovery/startup program...this prog can "see" it, but can't access/boot it.I can breathe some life into this anaesthetised device sooner rather than later...I may as well work my way through the whole lot rather than using a trial and error method that might take a long time.

When it logged back in the desktop was like in the beginning - the desktop theme was some default picture not the one I had put on, no additional programs were not installed and the worst part - my user folder on the desktop was completely empty! All of the folders My Music, My Pictures etc. had only Sample Pictures and Sample Music in them. I tried searching for my files but they cannot be found. Even worse - in My Computer the Local Disk is shown to be almost empty, like all of my files hadn't been there. So is there any way I can find and restore my files?

So i bought Windows 7 Home Premium from the same store i got this at (Webhallen, pretty much swedens largest component retailer) to replace the standard Home edition (which i got with my "old" packard bell!).
I have 2 HDDs, one from the packard bell (1tb) and one i recieved from a friend, a 320gb seagate. I ran with both in my packard bell for a while, using the 320gb for the system. It ran without any problems.So, i boot the CD, go through the setup and format the 320GB. (I also formatted some reserved space for OEM files from the Packard bell harddrive since i won't be using the packard bell any time soon).I proceed with the installation.The copying of the files goes very quick and when it reaches the expanding of files it takes ages before it finally comes to the error:Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070017.Immedieatly i whipped up the laptop and googled it, trying the different "sollutions" to no avail, like simply trying to install again without rebooting, taking out a RAM stick and only running with one in the master slot, taking out all excess Harddrives etc etc. i also ran Memtest86, clean, no errors!
I tried install Ubuntu on it, but that didn't go well either. It loaded for ages and then i got a very strange horizontal black and white striped screen, the black stripes being jagged and pixelated.I found my old windows 7 home cd from my packard bell and tried installing with that one. Same result, Error code: 0x80070017.
I got an error at the windows 7 Expanding files 27% Mark. Installation missing required files windows custom install fail.
