Windows With Multiple User Logs/Preference Files?
Nov 28, 2010
While taking a look around my Windows 7 HDD in Ubuntu, which can see tons of files that Windows won't show you, I went into my user account named "owner" and I saw a bunch of what appears to be Windows Log or preference files. They have long random names and with weird file extensions that Gedit (Like Notepad for Ubuntu but much more advanced) won't open. File sizes range from 0 bytes to 6.2MB with the average size at 64 or 512KB in size. I would like to know if 1. They are logging data and sending it to Microsoft. 2. They are old Preference files that need to be cleared out. 3. Why such crazy file names?

I have had multiple issues with this box from day one, but i was positive i could fix this. After installing Win7Ult SP X64 from my MSDN account I have had numerous BSOD's that come from mainly ntoskrnl.exe Steps i have taken to resolve:MEMtest 86 and 64 for 50 passesRe-seat every card in the machine.set the BIOS to safe defaults (this caused the computers boot manager lose it mind)turned off the page file totally (at the time I had 16 gigs of ram and did not need a page file anyway)Re-installed the OS clean on a clean driveTried installing 2008R2 both core and full install. (Datacenter and enterprise)slamming my head on the keyboard as hard as I humanly can.(this did NOT resolve the issue for the record but wow what a headache) uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and allowed windows to manage the video (helped on another machine i worked on last year)I have recent logs going back months, seems to happen almost every day no regularity.BELOW please find all logs that are current from this install of the OS.

I bought a floor model laptop that has an account called Kiosk on it. I created a new account and an admin account and deleted the Kiosk account. When windows 7 boots up the kiosk account pops up and attempts to log in. I have to switch users and manually enter the name of the new account. When I try to manage accounts the Kiosk account is nowhere to be found just the two accounts that I created.

On my laptop I have windows 7. But on my older computer I have windows XP.Back in Windows XP I would log into the administrator by doing ctrl alt delete x2 at the login page, and something basic like this would pop up instead of me clicking on an avatar/icon:
Log On to Windows
User name: _____________
Password: _____________
Then I would type in administrator and my password to login as an admin, or I would type in my username(Aaron) and my password. One time when I had a friend over and he started up my computer he made a comment about how my login page had one account(named Aaron), without the subtitle of administrator on it. Part1: Is it natural to have one account not as an admin? I want to keep the Aaron account and leave the administrator hidden, and only be able to access it by doing ctrl alt delete. (so far its fine in Win XP)Now on to part 2 of my question. My parents have windows 7 on their laptop, and the one account(called family) is the admin. If I change my OS to windows 7(which I plan on doing), am I still able to switch to the Admin account and leave Aaron as just a regular user? I can't find a way to do it on my laptop or my parents laptop.I just looked again and if I go to Control Panel - user accounts- change the way users log in/offit says Aaron is the admin. why I can still log in as the username administrator?

I want to have separate profiles setup in Win 7 64 where by: Shows one login/user when the system locks and depending upon the password provided. system opens the appropriate, linked profile. Have searched forums, Google, etc...and have come up with nothing. If this is a piece of software or a Windows 7 I'll do whatever is required. Think about this if you're a programmer!!! I travel frequently and sometimes need the ball and chain to reboot the system or do something on the local machine but I don't need her snooping (things aren't so great at home). I already use LogMeIn and it works great but I believe in Belt and Suspenders. With something like this, you could give someone "your password" and not have to worry because it is a FRONT account.

I am using Windows 7 RC and will be moving most of our household PCs to Windows 7. I'm wondering if there is a way to create the same user ID on multiple machines so that no matter what machine a user logs onto they will see their same desktop and have access to their files, programs, bookmarks, same user rights/restrictions, etc.
This may be too much to hope for but thought I'd ask. Perhaps a home server is required or maybe use of Windows 7 file sharing could work?

I have six workstations (Dell T-7500s with Windows 7 Pro) set up on a HomeGroup and all running as if an Administrator is logged on. I have two sets of Printers attached to two of the workstations, one each DNP DS-40 & DS-80 printers on each of those machines. I have shared the printers out to the other workstations and the printers function properly with one exception. On the machines that are using a shared printer two of the advanced document settings are grayed out, "Overcoat Finish" and "Print Retry". I am not too concerned about "Print Retry" but I need my folks to be able to access the "Overcoat Finish" selection. I have tried setting the printer properties to full control for everyone but it made no difference. The settings in question work normally on the host machines and also on the machine that I set up the HomeGroup on, which is not one of the host machines.

Is there a way for me to set up automatic logging in at start up of, lets say, 4-5 user accounts? The accounts serve no purpose other than running different instances of a program that I could then manage from my main account, but for each instance to initialize, I have to manually log in to each account on system startup. (I'm also seeking to find a way to hide those accounts, but I can't do so yet because I have to log in to each account every time I restart my computer.) So a program or registry edit of some sort would be most helpful
I've done some research, but as of now, I've only found a way to auto-log in one account (presumably intended for main accounts) so this is useless to me. ("control userpasswords2" in Run)
Just to clarify, all of my accounts are password protected, though the additional accounts have very basic passwords (which is required). I do want to keep a password on my main account, and I don't want to auto log in my main account.

From my husband's Admin account, I deleted my own User Account, but the account is still there (with a lock icon on it) and I am unable to delete it (gives me the message that the folder is open or in use by another program). I changed the owner to my husband (checked the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects") as suggested on this thread and I still can't delete it.istory:- My user profile was corrupted, got the message that a temporary user profile was created.- Rather than going the route of going into the registry as suggested here, I deleted the account but kept the files (was this my mistake)?- When I went to create a new account, it appended HOME.DESKTOP to the end of my name

I'm trying to download multiple files, not from those download sites but these are files full of wallpapers. I've tried the usual 'download accelerators' but they don't work for one reason or another. Is there a download accelerator/plug-in/add-on, etc. That works in Windows 7?

I haven't been able to do this and just assumed that it wasn't possible until I saw this: Select multiple files or folders. This doesn't work on my computer, can other people open Explorer and select more then one folder at a time? I've tried this when I wanted to move multiple folders to an external drive and had to do them one at a time.

I have a WD hard drive that I have done a full partition on and will not repartition. I have a second drive that I probably can reinstall windows if need be. I have changed a lot with windows 7 I have added different themes, start orbs, explorer frames/navigation, and system icons. The problem is when my wife gets on it, she hates it. So I made a different user account so that it would be her own look and feel. However the icons and other things are changed in hers also. So my question is: is there a way to have each user load their own windows explorer.exe and other system3264 files for each user? Or is there a way that I can have it ask at the begging (much like choosing a user) which drive to boot from? She basically just uses regular standard windows, and I use mine which looks like: [URL] So the start orb and other folders and file icons transfer to hers as well. I know that she would be happy if there was a way that we could each have different looks. Again I do not want to partition my drive to dual boot.

In Windows 7 I have no problem selecting multiple files in a normal folder for example. The problem is when using a program (such as Freestar AMR MP3 Converter) I cannot select multiple files at once. This can make using the program extremely tedious and time-consuming if there are large numbers of files to convert. It is not just this one program that does it, because other programs also fail to allow me to select multiple files. Again, I must state that this only seems to happen when using certain programs and not generally in Windows 7. Also, a small unrelated question: how do I get out of 'Libraries' view in My Documents and basically disable the Libraries view permanently, and just have it normal like in all earlier versions of Windows?

Today I came across the following problem and tried to google for an answer, but without luck. In windows explorer, if I select files with different extensions (for example two files, one txt and one pdf) and right click to bring up the context menu, I noticed that the entry "Open" is missing. Instead if I select files with the same extension, the entry "open" is correctly displayed. What I want to do is to get the "open" command in the context menu even if I select files of different type. Is there a way to do that without having to write my own shell extension handler?

I believe Ive run into a bug with Windows Explorer, however, it could possibly be with Word 2010. If its not a bug, and can be fixed by your helping me, that would be wonderful! (I use Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit.) This is what does work just fine: From Word, I open a file, then open another file, then another. I am able to use the CTRL-F6 to move from document to document. This is what does not work: I open those same 3 files from Windows Explorer, by using the mouse to select them and hit ENTER. The files do open in Word. However, the CTRL-F6 keystroke does not work to be able to move from document to document. In the latter, its a little bit as if Windows Explorer is starting multiple copies of Word. However, from the Word icon on the taskbar, both cases look the same, i.e., when I hover over the icon, I can see the 3 miniature files, and can click into any of them. Id like to understand whats going on thats different in the 2 cases. But Id really love to learn of how I can make the latter case work. With my work, I do this process (open multiple files from Windows Explorer) dozens of times a day, and I need efficiency. It takes a lot longer to open each file one-by-one. It also takes longer to not be able to use CTRL-F6.

I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64x over my last copy of the same OS using the same disk, as Ive done in this manner twice before with complete success. This time however, when I go to my windows.old >> users file my old user account isnt there, while the public account is. I checked my disk usage and the whopping 129gb chunk of information that was my user account still exists somewhere, taking up space in a place I cant see. Furthurmore, I unticked the 'read only' box in the file properties of the whole windows.old file and while watching the names of all the affected subfolder and files whip by I caught glances of windows.old/user/xxxxx/music, pictures etc. So theyre obviously still there, just in a much less digitally tangible way. Soo...how I can possibly retrieve these files?

I was browsing my user's folder and found I had 9 ntuser.dat files (see attached png file). I have a couple of questions:
1 -- Why does Windows 7 has write so many and with file names so long.
I now each user, including system users such Administrator, etc. have a .dat file allocated to them, however in this test bed I am in a single user configuration. I also know that by default Windows hides these files from the user. I have always been suspect of a company that has to HIDE its product from the user, of course understanding there are a number of Brain-Dead operators out in cyberspace I think it better they hide the computer from them.... LOL.
2 -- If they are no value can they be deleted.

How do I get Windows 7 Windows Explorer to Open multiple files (of same type) in the SAME application window, like it did in Windows XP?
PAST
WinXP > Windows Explorer > Highlight File (jpg) > Open > Application Launches > Open 2nd File > Opens in SAME application window. Now I can work with both files in the same application.
NOW
Win 7 > Windows Explorer > Highlight File (jpg) > Open > Application Launches > Open 2nd File > Opens in NEW application window. I then have 2,3,4,..of the same application running. I want to open and work with the files within the SAME single application window. (using windows explorer)(like I did with XP).
How do I tweak Win7?
What is the terminology or registry area for this technical change? (so I can search better without so many common words)
Which files-- Excel (xls), Microsoft Paint (jpg), Corel Photo-Paint (jpg) >> seems like all applications that can open multiple files. It definitely seems like a change to the O/S. Same apps worked fine in XP.
(I would accept a single tweak to get Corel Photo-Paint JPGs to all open in the same app window. I want to go to windows explorer, click on JPGs, and have them all open in 1 instance of Corel Photo-Paint, or any application associated with JPGs.)

I am having trouble with my notebook. I recently decided to turn on the screensaver to "blank" after 10 minutes and set the power managemet to never turn off the display under either power condition. I would leave my computer for 10 minutes or so and then when I would come back, I was logged out. Yes, I mean logged out as in all open, running applications were closed, not just at the login screen. I searched the web and found many others with a similar problem. Most replies refer to the check box on the screensaver setup page that says "on resume, display logon screen." This is quite different though as even with that checked, the current user is not actually logged off and the running applications are not shutdown. I (and others with this problem) are actually being logged off. Incidentally, the box is not checked, and now the screensaver is diabled. Power management is set to never turn anything off, ever. I still have the problem. I then saw a post that said I needed to uncheck the "require password to logon" option in the user settings. Seemed odd since my computer worked as it should for the last 9 months with that option checked (by default), but I gave it a try. The system still logs me out. I then went back to the screensaver and re-enabled it with the "bubbles" but this time, I set the timeout to 9999 minutes, figuring that it would then take a week of idle time before it logged me out, if in fact that was the problem. Didn't work, still being logged out with applications running. I have searched all over the web, but can't find a solution.
