i accidentally changed something to make my program files open in windows media player. when i double click on a program from my desktop, windows media player comes up and gives me the "windows cannot play this file" message.

I was trying to import some videos I downloaded online and it says,"The file C:UsersRosalieDownloads[DB]_Naruto_Shippuuden_010_[EC7747DE].zip cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again." But, I already installed the DivX codec that the website I downloaded the clip from recommended and I tried restarting WMM.
I know that I did this before on my old computer. I downloaded videos from the same website, and I had to download the DivX codec. Once I downloaded the codec, the files worked, and i was able to download them. Does anyone know why it won't work for me now? Could it have anything to do with the files having been downloaded as zipped folders?
When given the choice during software installation, what's the difference between installing to "Program Files" and "Program File (x86)"?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows Vista Ultimate with Windows Defender Disabled and Norton Internet Security 2009 installed. Someone who is completely trusted sent me an email with an attachment. The attachment was defined as a ZIPP file. I copied the file to my desktop and renamed it to a ZIP file to access the enclosed files. Within the ZIP are four OCX files which I need to copy to my System32 directory.
When I attempt to copy the files to any location in my computer, I get "Windows has found this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file." When I click on the "How does this help protect my computer." link it takes me to Windows Mail help. This has nothing to do with Windows Mail. Where can I adjust the Security settings in Windows to fix this problem
My computer crashed and I'm trying to install Divx codec. I thought I only needed the codec but the file would not play so I downloaded all four components. Now it will play in the Divx player but as soon as I set WMP as my default I get a message the WMP does not support the file. They are all ..avi files. Just to test, I tried the same files on another PC and they play fine.

Get a msg that says the following "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Get this msg when trying to play MP3, WMA and WMV's. Worked fine before reinstall. I tried ripping a track and it worked fine but after ripping would not play the file - rip both to MP3 and WMA. Downloaded Winamp and it works fine and plays all the files.

So, after installing vista64, drivers, and all updates (except SP1), and configuring the media center I then installed:

With Firefox browse can play them after I install the plugin but Netscape doesn't. I have find around to find a plugin for Netscape but I have not found yet. Any body can tell me the way to fix it? View 4 Replies View RelatedThe 1st problem is WMP11 failing to play .WMA or WMV files in Full Mode. The canned posts zachd has supplied everywhere does not fix the problem for most people. THIS IS A WMP11 PROBLEM! It is not an Intel graphics problem, or a Codec problem, or some other vendor's problem. This is evidenced by the fact that video will play if you start in Skin Mode and then switch to Full Mode while it is already playing. However it won't play if you start off in Full Mode first. The 2nd problem is THERE IS NO WMP11 UNINSTALL/REINSTALL!
Why hasn't it occurred to Dev that making a clean uninstall/reinstall procedure will resolve the WMP11 problems caused by corrupt files and registry entries? The Full Mode problem is a recurring problem seen in numerous user forums on the across Internet. Please do something to correct this problem once and for all.
When I try to play video or audio files on Media Center through the TV via HDMI, the video and audio is very laggy. It also sounds sort of static like. When I play CD's or DVD's the problem is resolved. Also, when I unplug the HDMI, the problem is resolved. Also, when I minimize Media Center, the problem is resolved. It only happens when the HDMI is plugged in and Media Center is Maximized. I have searched all over and have not been able to find a solution to this problem. I have tried changing the HDMI cords and changing the HDMI input on the TV. I've also tried to use a different TV and no luck.
View 6 Replies View Relatedim totally new to the vista forum only got it a few days ago and being a tweaker by nature i tweaked a few things everything seemed to be ok then i updated my graphics drivers all still ok but when i tried to play any game windows or otherwise i got an error message saying that the file had no program associated with it and to change it in the file association control panel (which i couldnt find) so i used system restore to rectify problem so my question is was it my tinkering that caused the problem or could it have been the drivers (which i somewhat doubt and hope it wasnt the cause as i have to update at some stage)

And yet when I go to Control Panel->File Associations, .pdf is associated with Adobe Reader and .jpg is associated with Paint. It also needs to be able to work with both internal and external hard discs, and all flavors of CD and DVD. Any recommendations? Most of the ones that allow you to download a trial have crippled to trial so much that it's really hard to judge them. Incidentally, I ran the free Recuva on a DVD-RW; I started it at 12:30 PM and at 5:30 AM (17 hours later) it showed 89% complete, and at 8:00 it had stopped with the message "allocation error".
