Default Install Into The X86 Program Files
Nov 19, 2007Ill try not to look to dumb here, but I just installed Vista Home Prem 64 about a week ago and I have a question. There seems to be two Program Files to install applications into, Program Files and Program Files (x86). I know the x86 refers to 32 bit OS. So why do all my applications want to default install into the x86 Program Files? Is there a difference in installing into either one of them? Could it cause issues that anyone knows of? Should I uninstall out of my x86 and reinstalled my application into the non-x86 Program Files?

Aug 16, 2008I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64, and it came with 2 set of program files: program files, and program files x86. Since my hard drive is only 100 gigs, I was wondering if I could delete the normal program files and keep the x86 ones, or would that cause problems?

Jul 28, 2008im totally new to the vista forum only got it a few days ago and being a tweaker by nature i tweaked a few things everything seemed to be ok then i updated my graphics drivers all still ok but when i tried to play any game windows or otherwise i got an error message saying that the file had no program associated with it and to change it in the file association control panel (which i couldnt find) so i used system restore to rectify problem so my question is was it my tinkering that caused the problem or could it have been the drivers (which i somewhat doubt and hope it wasnt the cause as i have to update at some stage)

May 9, 2008Using Windows Mail under Vista, I am having trouble with some file types. .pdf and .jpg files both give me an error message saying that "This file does not have a program associated ...". And yet when I go to Control Panel->File Associations, .pdf is associated with Adobe Reader and .jpg is associated with Paint. When I click on one of these file types in any other context, the association works fine.

Nov 6, 2009I had installed a realestate program called Agent Office successfully, my client attempted an online upgrade to a new version and it blew up the new/old agent office installation. I did the uninstall from windows of the apps, even used perfect uninstaller and removed all remnants, upon attempting to install started to get the 1607 Install Shield Scripting runtime error, googled and tried numerous fixes.
As of now I have UAC Disabled, recreated windows temp, copied the installation to the x86 programs folder and tried to install from there, verified permissions and now when I try to install it I'm getting Invalid Program/System Directory error and still cannot install.

Sep 20, 2008I did a search for "x86" on these forums and did not find anything. So, I'd like to ask a few quick question to Brink or anyone else that might know.
This is my first computer with a 64-bit OS (Vista Home Premium). I noticed that there are two separate "Program Files" directories off of root C:
a "Program Files" directory a "Program Files (x86)" directory Is there a difference between the two directories that we should know about?
Also, I've been installing programs to "Program Files (x86)." The programs I've been installing are not necessary 64-bit programs. Should I be installing programs to the "Program Files" directory, instead?
X86 Vs X64, Program Files X86
Feb 6, 2009I have Vista Ultimate, I have x64 installed at the present time. I noticed under C: it lists two program files folders, one just plain Program Files (which I presume is the x64 bit folder) one Program Files x86 (which is what it says I presume) The x86 folder is 1.55 gig and the other Program Files Folder (Which I asume is x64) is only 900 MGB. So does that tell me that most of what is on my pc is still X86, running in compatability mode? I usually run Vista Ultimate 32 bit, but just had to try this and see if it would run on my home built pc.

Nov 25, 2009I need a good file recovery program that will run both under Vista and Win 7. It needs to be able to salvage files both deleted and those lost because of disc errors. It also needs to be able to work with both internal and external hard discs, and all flavors of CD and DVD. Any recommendations? Most of the ones that allow you to download a trial have crippled to trial so much that it's really hard to judge them. Incidentally, I ran the free Recuva on a DVD-RW; I started it at 12:30 PM and at 5:30 AM (17 hours later) it showed 89% complete, and at 8:00 it had stopped with the message "allocation error".

Jun 21, 2008I tried to download/install a game from realarcade today. When the installer program was running I got a message that an error occured. I tried to redownload the game and this time I got a windows message that files were corrupted, try again. I also got a dialog box saying the program might not have installed properly or I could check it had installed properly. I clicked cancel but immediately another box appeAred as if it were trying to install. I hit cancel. My question, where does all the files/programing reside after I hit cancel. Can any of it be left over and be in an incomplete state and mess up anything else? I looked in programs to see if it could be uninstalled but it was not in that list.

Jul 29, 2009I have a serious problem to fix. I've written a WIndows Application using visual studio 2008 that uses an Access database to hold data. I've placed the database in the same folder as the executible "C:Program FilesMyAppMyData.mdb". The program installs and work fine under XP and but when installed and run under Vista, I'm getting file permission errors. All user installation and running of the application is done as the ADMINISTATOR, the only user profile created.
My eariler version of the application, written with VS 2005 installs (DOT NET Framework 2.0) and works fine under Vista. I can't change the database location, as eariler versions of this same program have been running and working fine under XP. It would mean changing the data file location for over 200 customers. It would cause a great deal of head aches to modify the application to use a different
folder for the database.
SO here's my questions. What permissions do I need to get read/write access to my data file? What steps can be taken to remove the security attributes on my data file? Can I change these permissions from within my application? The application exe file does have its compatibilities property set to "Run as an administrator". Do I have to run the application under compatibility mode of "Windows XP (Service pack 2)"?

Sep 2, 2008About a week or so ago, I decided to upgrade my PC to Windows Vista. I gave it awhile, mostly didn't want to deal with an upgrade and all that. System has been fine on XP for years...why mess with it. But having gotten a new video card, I just wanted to be current on my OS again. As it turns out, I like Vista alot and have had little to no trouble with it. If you look at my system config, nothing is more than a year old at most, so my computer, at least for my needs is still "current." Having tried and like Vista 32bit (Home Premium) I have decided to take the next step into 64bit and that's why I am here. My system is 64 bit compatible, so I figure it's time to take full advantage of it. I have important apps I use for school for 3D that have 64bit versions I've been wanting to try, and I have 2 Gigs of RAM coming today which will make my total 4 and 64bit is the only way I can utilize it all!
I'll probably be doing the format install sometime tonight, which finally brings me to why I posted. In my research of Vista 64, I have read some blurbs about it giving youo 2 program files, Program Files and Program Files x86 (Or something.) I've also read that in some cases it can be important to make sure you install a certain program to the right one. My system has 3 physical Hard drive, that I partitioned in several total for storage, windows, programs, games, and so on. My current Program Files is a 80GB Partition all by itself. It's a different physical drive than Windows is on. Will installing applications to this drive like I have always did cause me any trouble in this new Vista 64 bit I'm about to dive into? My system will definately have a mix of 32bit and 64bit apps, with more by far probably being 32bit. Also while I think to ask, will the Vista 64 install procedure allow me to just wipe the partition my OS is currently on? Or will going to 64 bit require me to wipe the entire physical HDD? The other partitions that share the Windows INstall Partition are just storage so I don't want to format them unless I need to.
Delete File Opened In Another Program
Mar 3, 2010I tried to delete a template in "My Templates) in "Word". It would not go the the recyle bin as a file was opened in another program. I discovered that when I went Word I get Document 1. I then click the Office Button. Click on close and get a faded screen. Click the Office Button again and the only options are:
Open
Open from Office Live
Save to Office Live
Is this the open file? If it is how do I delete it?
Associations To Cd Rom Drive: File Does Not Have A Program Associated
Jul 13, 2009I went to open a software disc that I just put in my drive and I moved to fast or something and clicked on the wrong option on the context menu and messed up the association to my cd/dvd rom drive. Now I cant get the drive to auto start and show the icon next to the cd drive letter. It also wont run if I double click on the drive.
I get an error that says: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. Now I have tried everything from exefix_vista.reg, inffix_vista.reg, exefix_cu.reg. I'm not new to computers, but this has me all messed up. I need to use that disc for school. I even tried putting a disc in for my router software and still get the same error. I don't know where to go from here. I've uninstalled my drive and drivers, I've checked with Vista repair, nothing works. I don't want to have to reload my OS if I can help it.

Sep 29, 2009Any email that I receive that has a link in it will not go to the link. I get an error mesage that says the file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action. It says I need to "create an association in the Set Association control panel." Other times I get a pop up that says "application not found". I can't provide any more info than that. I don't know where to find the "association control panel" and when I call Windstream, my email provider, they tell me it's my computer that's screwed up and transfer me to India where I get to converse with a nice gentleman for thirty minutes and who still can't understand what I'm saying. I losing patience.
