I noticed every time I boot up I hear my computer fan speed up (as if the computer were working extra hard). When I check Task Mgr I notice SVCHOST running 30% + cpu at times. I checked the service running and it's the plug & play service.

The "problem" - Vista boot times. The fastest Ive ever managed to get it was 25 seconds, thats from the moment you see the green bar, to the moment the desktop appears. Ive all features on (effects etc) along with the sidebar, resolution is 1290 (?) x 1080 on a 50" plasma TV. Now granted, 25 seconds isnt long to wait, however what I DONT understand is how my girlfriends Sony Vaio laptop (around 1.5ghz dualcore, 1GB RAM) loads Vista (all be it 32bit) in 19 seconds.
Surely having 8GB RAM means faster boot times? I originally thought that my RAM was too slow (533mhz) so upgraded to 800mhz (fastest I can go) but no effect. I then read about Raptor drives being FAST, so installed one purely for the OS, it makes marginal difference. Ive altererd the boot to show 4 processors, timeout delay 3 seconds, nothing to be started at startup.
Ive even installed a stripped down version of Vista 64 HomePremium, taking out loads of things I dont use, again doesnt make that much of a difference. Ive heard of others getting their system to load (with the same config as mine) in 12 seconds?!! Again, yes this is truly, truly picky, but hoep someone can shed some light on this forum as to why a system 4 times faster and more powerfull.. takes longer to boot up?

How can I speed up my Vista boot time? Currently it takes between 75-85 seconds to boot into a usable state.
Once in Vista, my laptop is very fast, and I have no complaints.
I did a clean install of Vista.
I've already disabled many services and startup programs.
I did a bunch of little tweaks I found on different sites as well like disabling indexing, tmm, system restore.
The main thing that seems to be slowing the boot process is between the BIOS and login prompt.
There is a period of at least 15-20 seconds where the screen is black or barely doing anything before it jumps to login.
I tried going into the BIOS and making sure things are in order. I put the HD as the first boot device instead of CD (probably didn't save much time).
Is there something I can do to speed that time up?
I've recentely bought a Qnap TS-109 NAS Sever. I am trying to copy all my bideo and music files over to it, however, as soon as I sart a transfer (either throught windows explorer or FTP) my computer slows to a crawl. Basically videos and music become juddery, my mouse and keyboard become very slow etc. Also I only seem to get about 3.5 MBPS when transfering files. Im on a 100mbps lan, my maths says that says thats a maximum of 12.5 MBPS, I know there are overheads but it should still be faster? Infact streming videos from the NAS server to my computer is worse that streaming them via my 54mbps wireless connection to my PS3. Is there something wrong with my setup? I am using two devolo highspeed home plugs between my pc and router, although my pc still says its connected at 100mbps and the homeplugs say they are linked at 100mbps.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium, it came with: 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB. I wanted more memory so I bought a 2GB kit PC2-*5300* DDR2 SDRAM, because it was on sale for $60. The 6400 speed would have cost me over $200. The salesman assured me it would work fine and I wouldn't notice any difference. I installed it when I got home and everything works great, no problems. But I still can't stop wondering if the difference in speed WOULD matter. Can anyone explain, or provide a link explaining, when, if ever, I would benefit from the faster memory. I mostly use my PC for surfing the web, email, and some photo editing.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Vista x64 Ultimate and I'm having internet connection issues. My laptop is the HP Pavillion dv7. My ISP tells me everything is fine on his end. I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b. When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps. Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router. The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).

He can talk when we are playing Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo: Custom Edition, and I can hear him, but he can't hear me when I'm talking. I wonder why my fax card's built-in speaker no longer emits any sound when I'm sending a fax - I used to be able to hear it dialling. I've tried Googling the issue and apart from a few people saying that they vaguely remember the issue and seeing a fix for it which they've long forgotten, I still haven't actually found a fix. The card is obviously still working as I can send and receive faxes and sounds are all on as per the options/settings,although I doubt that Windows Sounds settings have anything to bear on a card's built-in speaker. It's a Hiro 56K V.92 PCI Modem which shows in Vista as an Agere Soft Modem. I get the same problem in both XP and Vista by the way.The speaker worked for a while and then just stopped.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMany of you may have been as frustrated as myself by Micrsoft bowing to the RIAA and pressuring the soundcard manufacturers to remove the "What You Hear" feature from their drivers. This supposedly prevents you from recording web radio and other sound card audio.
The short term workaround has been to loop the line out audio back around into the line in jack. While this works, it's a kludge.
The good news is that Version 7 of Total Recorder (just released) now comes with a true kernal mode driver that restores the capability to do direct recordings.

I have a 250 GB HDD and a 500 GB HDD. the 250 GB had Vista x64 on it and then I partitioned it with Acronis (after backing it up to the 500 GB HDD) so I could install Windows 7 x64 on the smaller (about 55 GB) partition that I have just made. That didn't work so I reformatted my 250 with Acronis (the backup that I had) and tried to install Win7 on the 250 and just make a small partition from the installation screen. Now when I try to boot up there is just a black screen with a white blinking hash mark in the upper left corner. When I use a boot disk it does show that there is partition on the 250 GB and both Vista and 7 are installed, but for some reason I can't seem to boot to them. Long story short: I want to be able to dual boot to windows vista or windows 7. How do I do that?

Command Prompt. Can?t think of any appropriate command to use here. So I booted with the system DVD (as one would with XP) but the upgrade option has been greyed out. I don?t want to do a clean install. I want to repair the existing installation.
When I try to boot Vista (Home Premium 32bit), the loading screen with the green bar doohicky shows up followed by a black screen with the mouse cursor. It oscillates between "working" and regular cursor but in the end, the computer just restarts and it does that again if I try to boot it. This probably happened because I system restored right before getting this problem, but I'm not absolutely sure. At least with the 2 "Home Premium" flavors of Vista they are enough dissimilar that when someone refers to a problem, one might be well advised to specify as Vista64 or Vista32. I have both (on 2 different computers, not dual boot) and although some programs claim to be for "Vista" (sometimes true) they don't specify which Vista.
I have had installation issues with Vista64 which were not seen on Vista32. And even when installation was sucessful on both, there are problems on Vista64 but not Vista32, and occasionally the other way around. I know from experience that a 32 bit vs. 64 bit operating system can give problems. We encountered it in Math modeling when changing from 16 to 32 bit Compilers and Hardware.
I got a kernel missing or corrupt all of the sudden so I had to format and reinstall Vista Business. Im having Lenovo t61 BUT now after 'expanding files' inthe vista installprocessis complete at100% the PC is supposed to reboot, but I get an error saying 'windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase...' Ive read that I might try to install drive controller drivers in the 'load driver' thing.. The problem is that I dont know what file i need!? what driver do I need ? View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently put together a new computer using these parts: I've updated to Vista Ultimate SP1, run multiple disk clean ups, defrags, use CCleaner, clean the registry, defrag the registry, disabled services and have made tweaks according to the guide provided on this website and have minimal startup programs running but my boot times average around 2 minutes. For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.

I built this machine just 3 weeks ago, mb is gigabyte ep45c-ud3r, e8400, 4 gigs of G.Skill pc 8500, 320gig Samsung sata drive, Samsung cd/dvd burner, and I also have 2 older IDE drives running I think they are 175 gigs each. Do the other day I got a disk with vista ultimate 64 bit and decided to run a clean install, my machine had the 32 bit system of the
same.
The 64 bit system began to install and when it gets to the point after you select which drive to install it on goes to the next screen it starts to open files, or extract shows 0% one dot and comes up with this message: "windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase, restart the installation" when I do that same thing happens and now same thing happens with the 32 bit system, I have tried 2 disks for that.
Im trying to record audio but only record what I hear & not record from my mic. Problem is my mic is my only option. I updated my drivers which are Conexant High Def Smart Audio221 & also NVIDIA High Def Audio. But after I did that I only a 1 single option to choose from when I look under recording devices. And it is showing disabled devices as well. Any idea's on what im doing wrong and/or what I need? Basically I want to record what only comes out of my speakers & not pic up any backround noise from my mic.

It then went to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I went into the BIOS to change the boot order and inserted my Vista home premium 32bit. I then got windows is loading in files. After a short while I got the black start up screen with Microsoft Corporation but after a few seconds it just froze. Moments later it went to a blue screen with white writing part of which said the following; A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TI YOUR COMPUTER.
Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
