How To Speed Up Boot Time?
Sep 13, 2008I have a Lenovo T400 - T9400 (2.53 GHz C2D) - 4GB DDR3-1066 - Vista Business x64
How can I speed up my Vista boot time? Currently it takes between 75-85 seconds to boot into a usable state.
Once in Vista, my laptop is very fast, and I have no complaints.
I did a clean install of Vista.
I've already disabled many services and startup programs.
I did a bunch of little tweaks I found on different sites as well like disabling indexing, tmm, system restore.
The main thing that seems to be slowing the boot process is between the BIOS and login prompt.
There is a period of at least 15-20 seconds where the screen is black or barely doing anything before it jumps to login.
I tried going into the BIOS and making sure things are in order. I put the HD as the first boot device instead of CD (probably didn't save much time).
Is there something I can do to speed that time up?

Mar 13, 2009Why is it that when Linux boots up and the desktop is on the screen the hard drive stops it's activity, But when Vista boots up and the GUI is up on the screen the hard drive light keeps up high activity for another 5 minutes?

Laptop Display: Boot Into Aero About 50% Of The Time. The Rest Of The Time I Forced Onto The Standard Theme With No Aero Option
Mar 23, 2008I've got an Sony VGN-BX197XP laptop that I've upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. Since then I've encountered some strange display-related issues:
1) I could only boot into Aero about 50% of the time. The rest of the time I forced onto the Standard theme with no Aero option. Since installing Vista SP1 I can't get Aero at all.
2) When not running in Aero mode I can't get the Windows Media Player to play video files, nor get a Perfomance Index.
3) If I plug in an external monitor I can't get a picture on the laptop monitor but I *do* get a picture on the external monitor and it runs Aero 100% of the time. It will also play video files and give me a performance index.
Network Speed Slows Over Time: The Only Fix I Have Found Is Rebooting The Machine --- Then Performance Is As Expected For A Day Or So Before It Starts To Drop Again
Oct 6, 2009Problem is network bandwidth as measured by the speed test(s) will decrease over time without any changes being made -- it does not matter what time of day either. It is a Vista PC running SP2 and hard wired to a Linksys router (Wireless-G model) and I am a Comcast customer with 30mbps service. Maybe I should mention this PC sits idle for most of the day before the family comes home from school. All of the XP systems in the house do NOT have this problem.
As you can see over the course of 5 days the download speed drops into the 2-3 mbps range (and the upload speeds are greater than the download speeds !! ) The 12mbps measurement was taken after the reboot. The only fix I have found is rebooting the machine --- then performance is as expected for a day or so before it starts to drop again.
Time Schronization: Change Date & Time Internet Time Tab And Chose A Time Standard To Connect
Aug 31, 2008I recently went into Change Date & Time Internet time tab and chose a time standard to connect with. After doing that I went onto the internet and connected with time.nist.gov and checked the time. After that I was no longer able to go into the internet time tab. It tells me that time.nist.gov is the time connection and I can't change it. It tells me I need to have permission to do this as administrator. I am the administrator! What goes here?

Jul 1, 2008I've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a lot of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the hell? Before you ask, here are my specs. Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.
My current boot time distribution:
1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so)
2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu).
3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds................
Speed Up Boot Times?
Mar 22, 2008The "problem" - Vista boot times. The fastest Ive ever managed to get it was 25 seconds, thats from the moment you see the green bar, to the moment the desktop appears. Ive all features on (effects etc) along with the sidebar, resolution is 1290 (?) x 1080 on a 50" plasma TV. Now granted, 25 seconds isnt long to wait, however what I DONT understand is how my girlfriends Sony Vaio laptop (around 1.5ghz dualcore, 1GB RAM) loads Vista (all be it 32bit) in 19 seconds.
Surely having 8GB RAM means faster boot times? I originally thought that my RAM was too slow (533mhz) so upgraded to 800mhz (fastest I can go) but no effect. I then read about Raptor drives being FAST, so installed one purely for the OS, it makes marginal difference. Ive altererd the boot to show 4 processors, timeout delay 3 seconds, nothing to be started at startup.
Ive even installed a stripped down version of Vista 64 HomePremium, taking out loads of things I dont use, again doesnt make that much of a difference. Ive heard of others getting their system to load (with the same config as mine) in 12 seconds?!! Again, yes this is truly, truly picky, but hoep someone can shed some light on this forum as to why a system 4 times faster and more powerfull.. takes longer to boot up?

Jul 2, 2008I noticed every time I boot up I hear my computer fan speed up (as if the computer were working extra hard). When I check Task Mgr I notice SVCHOST running 30% + cpu at times. I checked the service running and it's the plug & play service.

I did the Visual basic test that I found here and my boot up time is 155 seconds. I do know part of my problem is my antivirus but looking around I found more problems.I have major bootup errors in the event log.
SP1 Kills Boot Time
Mar 23, 2008Installed the SP1 sent to me in the Windows updates a few days ago and machine has been slow to boot and generally slow ever since. It was very much faster before SP1. I have a Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine, 2 gigs ram, more than enough disk space left (320gig drive half full) etc. The only change was putting in SP1. Thinking that this could have been some sort of stuffup between Mcafee AV and this new SP1 I uninstalled it and it did make things slightly better as expected but of course I put it back and things were as bad as ever. I note, on web sites, that this is a commonly reported problem with SP1 from pre-release days. So, anyone know any way to fix it and if not, when MS will fix that?

20 Minute Boot Time, Even After Reinstallation Of Windows
Apr 22, 2010I'm currently experiencing an issue with a Visa Business laptop where it had suddenly been taking approximately 20 minutes to boot, after running various virus scans and checking through the boot logs I was unable to find a solution and as such decided to reinstall Windows to resolve my problem. However, I have found that even after completely reformatting the drive and reinstalling Windows Visa I am still experiencing this extremely long boot time. I have observed that the long boot time does not occur if I select to boot in to safe mode, and for a large majority of the time when the computer is booting the hard disk activity light isn't even flashing with Windows freezing on some attempts while booting.
To attempt to see if this was a hardware issue I downloaded a copy of Linux Mint onto a DVD and booted from it, as expected it booted extremely fast (for a disk) compared to Windows. Being unable to fix the problem myself I have decided to finally request help from people whom would be more knowledgable in this area than me :P To assist in finding the resolution of my problem I have included a copy of the bootlog (I have disabled the drivers that do not load and have noticed no difference in the overall boot time).
Thumb Drive Won't Trun On At Boot Time
Apr 18, 2009I have a PNY 16g thumb drive with both my msoffice and vista cd's copied to it and a few other things. When I boot, the drive isn't recognizedand doesn't turn on. If I pull it out and put it back in while vista is running it lights up and everything is fine.

For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.

Nov 13, 2009Is there any software that show what process is currently starting and running on screen in real time? I have Vista Ultimate. Somewhere along the startup of Vista there is a long wait. I think the perpetrator is the AppLauncher in the Vista Sidebar containing too many icons. In fact 56 of them. I guess the wait is while hte software is locating all relevant folders. But then again, I really don't know, as the wait is still there even when the sidebar start up is disabled. All I want is a few words on screen stating that this or that process is now starting... The list of started processes I can see in my Sysinternals Process Explorer. Do you guys know of such a ultility?

When I try to install additional 2Gb, I get a blue-screen every time I boot (some blue screens have an IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL, most have no error msg). Is there a way to determine if my installation of Vista already has this installed? I've already checked the Control Panel/Windows Update/Review Update History, it's not in there, I thought it may be in the core install on the DVD?

Jun 27, 2008I apologize in advance if this is longer than needed. Long question short, what can I do to improve my system performance or what am I doing wrong to improve it? Before I continue, I’ve read the “Speed Up the Performance of Vista” thread numerous times with no real success. My laptop isn’t extremely slow, it tends to be a little sluggish when scrolling on web pages [Mozilla and IE(have tried both 32 and 64bit editions of IE)], when scrolling in my music in iTunes (especially in Cover Flow), or when the system is left on for a day or two. I started with a clean install to avoid problems and to update all drivers necessary. On the Cover Flow, I have a friend with a latop with half the power of mine and it scrolls through the Cover Flow flawlessly (he has Home Premium 32bit).
Throughout the forum threads on this issue I see a lot that Vista simply takes time to update everything necessary. I’ve been running on it for about 4 months now. All drivers up to date, all Windows updates downloaded and installed as soon as they come out, and the system in protected with anti virus software. Here come the inquiries. 1) Can that be a problem? I am running McAfee on it. 2) Also, is my computer simply not able to handle all of it? When sluggish, the faster I try to scroll, especially iTunes, the slower it actually scrolls, obviously, but the CPU never goes past 25-35% of usage. Same with RAM, staying at 40% or so. My lowest score in my index score is my memory with a 5.0. Not sure of the brand currently installed, but I know its 4GB at 667, I’m a Crucial fan, 3) so upgrading to Crucial memory also for 4GB but at 800 it will it significantly increase my score? 4) Therefore performance? I’ve tried using the system with all the neat features disabled, transparency, etc, but same issues remain. I’d like to think my system can handle the neat features. .....
Memory Speed: Can't Stop Wondering If The Difference In Speed WOULD Matter
Apr 13, 2008I just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium, it came with: 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB. I wanted more memory so I bought a 2GB kit PC2-*5300* DDR2 SDRAM, because it was on sale for $60. The 6400 speed would have cost me over $200. The salesman assured me it would work fine and I wouldn't notice any difference. I installed it when I got home and everything works great, no problems. But I still can't stop wondering if the difference in speed WOULD matter. Can anyone explain, or provide a link explaining, when, if ever, I would benefit from the faster memory. I mostly use my PC for surfing the web, email, and some photo editing.

Nov 3, 2009if anyone has seen my previous threads you might have seen me complaining about the speed of vista. now i have a powerful PC and i JUST reinstalled vista less than one month ago and AGAIN its loading so incredibly slow its painful and im about to cry. i have literally less than 20 programs installed on a 500 GB HDD and it boots up as slow as a win '98 20 mhz cpu computer. i swear, ive never been more confused in my life. i havent reinstalled or de-installed anything like at all, i upgraded to SP2 i tried to a system restore and of course, it failed. for the past week im literally finding myself going to eat dinner and then coming down to see that my startup programs are just finihsing after 30 minutes of initial boot. once they are all loaded the pc works like a charm and nothing goes wrong. if you say i have "too many startup programs" iwill laugh because i litteraly have 4 startup programs. yes ive tried no startup programs but it doesnt help WHATSOEVER. im just onwdering how windows can corrupt files like by itself. no its not a virus. i ve checked with over 4 diferent anti viruses.

I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b. When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps. Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router. The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).

After encountering problems with vista I delted the vista partition and resized the xp partition back to it's original size. I am now stuck with the windows vista boot loader which persistantly telling me that the windows vista files are not present etc. etc. Is there any way that I can delted the vista bootloader and go back to using the xp bootloader?

Mar 26, 2009I just installed a fresh Vista x64 on a (temporary, just for the fun/experimenting) SATA disk, while I wait for my new SAS drives to arrive. After the install it all was ok-ish (experience index on the drive was only 2.3, so pretty slow compared to my old XP machine). The rest of my system all shows 5.9's But after fiddling around with new drivers and tips and trick I learned from this forum, it all went downhill from here. Navigation is very sluggish and the boot up time is 445 seconds (!) I did about everything I could find on this forum to speed up the OS, but no luck. Is there a tool available that helps me to find out which process/driver is causing the delay? Something like Bootvis for XP.
