Vista See XP Machines And The Shared Folders But XP Machines Don't

Mar 9, 2009

I used to have a network that consisted of: XP Pro / XP Home / Win 98 / Win 2000. they all saw each other and I was able to move & change files between them. I have had VISTA since 9/2008. however, my vista machine sees my XP machines and the shared folders but my XP machines don't see vista when I open network folder. I have everything shared, all permissions are full. I tried again to set up network on XP machine and it sees the vista shares but not allowed access. ps don't know if it matters, vista is a laptop running wireless.

Corporate Intranet Server Not Connect

Mar 23, 2008

I have two Vista laptops, that we are finally getting stable after many tweaks. My husband however *needs* a new laptop with XP on it as his corporate intranet server will *not* connect with anything else (yes, we and his whole IT department have tried). Those are getting very hard to find, obviously, and are very expensive when we do find one. I do have a retail copy of XP Pro available.

Local retailers are selling some inexpensive laptops that would work nicely if they didn't have Vista on them. So my questions basically are: is it worth it to buy a laptop which comes with a basic Vista OS, wipe it and do a clean install of XP Pro? I am not worried about voiding a warrantee in this case. Or if it works better, can my XP software be installed as a backwards "upgrade" over Vista Home? Just trying to work out the best route here.

XP Machines Cannot Access Vista Machine

Password Protection Turn Off Both Vista Machines

Mar 23, 2008

Why is Vista asking for a username and password everytime I try to access shares with password protection turned off on both Vista machines? Damn if I know. I can use the XP Pro machine to access the shared files on either Vista machine and don't get asked for a username/password. Vista's networking is flaky to say the least. The whole idea of small office networking is to be simple, Vista has tried to complicate this with password protection. Why should I have to have all users on every machine? That's just more network maintenance I don't want in a small home office. Besides some users may not want other people's accounts on their machines but they'd still like to share files and Vista has made this a nightmare.

Checklist:
File sharing : On (check)
Printer sharing: On (check)
Public sharing: On (check)
Password protection: Off (check)
Workgroup name the same (check)
Private network (check)

Logon to the router and I can see the Vista machines and the XP machine and the network printer. On XP machine access the shared printer on Vista 1, works like a charm. On XP machine open a shared folder on Vista 2, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on XP machine, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on Vista 2, sorry....do not pass go do not collect $200 until you enter a username and password. EXCUSE ME! Oh well, so much for progress. Not a firewall problem, get the same result whether or not a firewall is enabled or not. Haven't tried a crossover cable between the 2 Vista machines to see if it's the router but I have my doubts because XP works fine. Solution: Move all shared printers and files to XP and forget Vista sharing.

Failed Windows Sharing WITH TWO VISTA Machines

Aug 6, 2008

I am having is I cannot acess my laptop with windows sharing/networking.I am trying to share files and printers between my Dexktop PC and my Laptop. My desktop PC is connect to a router with DNS by cable and the laptop is connected by Wi-Fi.Both computers belong to the same workgroup(WORKGROUP).Both computers have password protected public folder and printer sharing, file sharing, network discovery, and password protected sharing enabled. Both computers do have shared files and printers. What's happening is from the laptop the desktop(RK-PC)appears and I can share files and printers flawlessly and very quickly. However from the desktop while the laptop (RYANK-MOBILE) appears it cannot be accessed at all. Also the desktop is vista 64 bit and the laptop is vista business.I saw another thread with the same problem but the response pointed to a tome of an article that explained every single facet of windows sharing down to the way the packets are constructed. To be honest I don't have time to read 100 pages on windows sharing and there is no way the problem is the complicated.None of the suggestions I read in the first five pages or so helped at all any ways.I tried changing netBIOS from default to disabled on both PCs but after doing this the result was normal function on the laptop as before but the desktop could no longer even see/discover the laptop on the network.

Can Live Failure Retrofitting Vista Machines

May 19, 2009

I tried to retrofit a "windows XP" machine into a Windows Vista machine for the past 2 days. My problems including no sound and no modem and a machine that wouldn't boot with a new sound card or an external USB device attached to it. I can live with the failure of retrofitting. But I can't live with the following: For some reason , known only to Microsoft and / or Symantec, both "vista machines" want to share my music library. The problem is that Idon't have any shares on either machine. The problem also exists when I restored the Windows XP machine. I noticed this behavior when I was sitting in a airport waiting for a plane. Airport was in a wireless network. Yesterday was wired.

I wonder what will happen in Windows 7. Why does "Vista" automatically search for media libraries to share? Does this behavior happen when 2 XP machines are side by side? I have NIS 2009 installed on both machines with the installed default behavior on both machines?Again who is too blame? How do I fix this? (I know, use Linux)

Blue Screen Of Death When I Am Playing WoW Or America's Army

Aug 24, 2008

I have just recently put in new RAM (4gb HyperX ddr 800) into my system and i have gotten the Blue Screen of Death 3 times in as many days. I run Vista Home Basic and i am wondering if that and the 4gb of new ram are the problem. I was under the impression that SP1 has resolved the problem with having more than 3gb of RAM for 32 bit systems. Is this not the case? Or is it because Vista now recognizes 4GB but still only effectively uses 3GB and the extra 1GB causes conflict when whatever program i am running "reaches" for it. I notice i usually only get the Blue Screen of Death when i am Playing WoW or America's Army and the in-game environment is getting really crowded or heavy.

Install Adobe Reader On My Vista Home Premium (SP-2) System, Encountered Numerous "privilege"

Jan 10, 2010

Trying to install Adobe reader on my Vista Home Premium (SP-2) system, I encountered numerous "privilege" problems. UAC is disabled, I R-Clicked on the installer and selected "Run as Administrator". The installation was interrupted numerous times, saying the installer lacked privileges to write to various different folders, mostly under the Program Data folder, and also in the Start Menu folder. On each occasion, I had to open Explorer, R-Click on the folder in question, and "Take Ownership" of it. I am the sole user of this system, so if I don't own the folders, who the hell does? My account is an administrator account.

This turned what should have been an uneventful 15 minute long procedure into an hour long hassle. Is there ANY way to get rid of this ownership nonsense so I don't have to go through this every time I install something? I thought disabling UAC was supposed to solve this problem. Unlike many, I'm not a real Vista basher, but this privilege/ownership business just has to go if you ask me.

Speed Up The Performance Of Vista

Jun 27, 2008

I apologize in advance if this is longer than needed. Long question short, what can I do to improve my system performance or what am I doing wrong to improve it? Before I continue, I’ve read the “Speed Up the Performance of Vista” thread numerous times with no real success. My laptop isn’t extremely slow, it tends to be a little sluggish when scrolling on web pages [Mozilla and IE(have tried both 32 and 64bit editions of IE)], when scrolling in my music in iTunes (especially in Cover Flow), or when the system is left on for a day or two. I started with a clean install to avoid problems and to update all drivers necessary. On the Cover Flow, I have a friend with a latop with half the power of mine and it scrolls through the Cover Flow flawlessly (he has Home Premium 32bit).

Throughout the forum threads on this issue I see a lot that Vista simply takes time to update everything necessary. I’ve been running on it for about 4 months now. All drivers up to date, all Windows updates downloaded and installed as soon as they come out, and the system in protected with anti virus software. Here come the inquiries. 1) Can that be a problem? I am running McAfee on it. 2) Also, is my computer simply not able to handle all of it? When sluggish, the faster I try to scroll, especially iTunes, the slower it actually scrolls, obviously, but the CPU never goes past 25-35% of usage. Same with RAM, staying at 40% or so. My lowest score in my index score is my memory with a 5.0. Not sure of the brand currently installed, but I know its 4GB at 667, I’m a Crucial fan, 3) so upgrading to Crucial memory also for 4GB but at 800 it will it significantly increase my score? 4) Therefore performance? I’ve tried using the system with all the neat features disabled, transparency, etc, but same issues remain. I’d like to think my system can handle the neat features. .....

Memory Speed: Can't Stop Wondering If The Difference In Speed WOULD Matter

Apr 13, 2008

I just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium, it came with: 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB. I wanted more memory so I bought a 2GB kit PC2-*5300* DDR2 SDRAM, because it was on sale for $60. The 6400 speed would have cost me over $200. The salesman assured me it would work fine and I wouldn't notice any difference. I installed it when I got home and everything works great, no problems. But I still can't stop wondering if the difference in speed WOULD matter. Can anyone explain, or provide a link explaining, when, if ever, I would benefit from the faster memory. I mostly use my PC for surfing the web, email, and some photo editing.

Speed Of Vista: 25 Minute Startup

Nov 3, 2009

if anyone has seen my previous threads you might have seen me complaining about the speed of vista. now i have a powerful PC and i JUST reinstalled vista less than one month ago and AGAIN its loading so incredibly slow its painful and im about to cry. i have literally less than 20 programs installed on a 500 GB HDD and it boots up as slow as a win '98 20 mhz cpu computer. i swear, ive never been more confused in my life. i havent reinstalled or de-installed anything like at all, i upgraded to SP2 i tried to a system restore and of course, it failed. for the past week im literally finding myself going to eat dinner and then coming down to see that my startup programs are just finihsing after 30 minutes of initial boot. once they are all loaded the pc works like a charm and nothing goes wrong. if you say i have "too many startup programs" iwill laugh because i litteraly have 4 startup programs. yes ive tried no startup programs but it doesnt help WHATSOEVER. im just onwdering how windows can corrupt files like by itself. no its not a virus. i ve checked with over 4 diferent anti viruses.

Slow Internet Speed:speed Goes Down To 300 Kbps

I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b. When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps. Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router. The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).

Drivers For IPX To Work On Vista, Didn't Work

Jul 1, 2008

I have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...

So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).

Cannot See XP Machines

Jun 17, 2008

I have a small home network. The three XP machines on the network use static IP addresses. One of the XP machines shares a printer. When I open Windows Explorer on the new Vista .Business machine and click on Network the only computer listed is the
Vista Business machine. Network Discovery is turned on on the Vista machine. The workgroup name is set to WORKGROUP on both the XP and Vista machines.

I cannot find any way to search for a computer by entering the computer name or IP address as I can in Explorer on XP. I have no idea what the search box in the upper right corner is supposed to do but it does not work. As soon as I type any character in the box it says "No items match your search."

I can ping the XP machine from a command window on the Vista machine.

If I do DIR \COMPUTERNAMEPRINT$ at the command prompt on the Vista machine the directory on the XP machine is listed.

I can see the Vista machine in Explorer on the XP machine.
