View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to update the bios on my computer but I am running into problems when booting from a usb flash drive. I get the error: "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."
I have been going about this process following instructions found here: Solution for Updating the BIOS on Windows Vista x64 Machines (VistaJuice)
I am trying to update my bios to get rid of blue screen and have folllowed the instructions from gateway - downloaded the file, burned a disk, restarted. But the machine does not boot from the cd it startes normally and does not start the flash update. My bios are currently set to boot first from cd then hard drive but it does not recognize what is in the cd.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI failed to flash my BIOS through Windows Vista 64 (Asus Update), now the update program cannot see any BIOS, so on attempting to start the PC again, I think it will be dead.
This OS is a complete joke.
My Vista 64 Nightmare List:
4GB Flash will not work (Asks for driver which does not exist)
Music Keyboards don't have Vista 64 Drivers
Vista 64 will not shut down correctly (Shutting down screen freezes)
Vista 64 gives cannot locate link for Firefox shortcuts (But Firefox loads with page)
Vista 64 will not recognise my Creative Zen....
So have an intel mobo, and there is a BIOS update for it, but the windows exe that Intel provides to flash it right from inside windows doesn't work in Vista 64 Ultimate. So My other options are to create a bootable USB stick or a bootable CD. I actually don't have a USB stick I can use for this, so I want to go the CD route. Either way I don't know how I can make a bootable Vista disk that gets me to a command prompt that I can put these bios files on so then I can run the bios update. I think this BIOS update could solve some problems I'm having getting things running smoothly.

I have tried at Phoenix' homepage, but they redirect me to DriverAgent that is a driver scanning program and that costs money. It must be possible to find the update elsewhere.

It's abit anoying to keep removing 2 gigs every time i want to install Vista.

2.. I have an ACER laptop that I installed Vista Ultimate on and it does all the download updates as necessary and works well.
3.. However, it seems NOT to want to know about downloading and installing SP1 - I have auto update switched on but SP1 never seems to be in the list of updates
4.. SP1 does not show on the summary of laptop either...so I assume it has NOT downloaded and installed SP1,Any ideas why it does not want to know about SP1? The laptop has 2GB of RAM and a 120GB hard disk and a 128MB video card.....
Is anyone else having problems installing this speific KB937287 update? I am unable to get it to stop showing up in my 64-bit Vista UE's Windows Update even though it was a success. All other today's updates were fine except one (KB937287 failed) and then rebooted, but now KB937287 keeps showing up even after successful installs.

Well, I just got 4gb of RAM (4x1gb) from Silicon Assets. Coming from 1gb (512mbx2), which was high density. The new stuff is low latency (4-4-4-12), and low density, and double sided. Well, I installed them in Vista Ultimate x64, and only 2814 show up. I go in the BIOS, and everything shows as 4gb, the PCI-E is limited to 512mb (because thats how much it takes iteself), and everything was set. Well, in CPU-Z it also tells me I have 4gb of RAM. When I used the MEM-TEST LiveCD, it said I had 2815 again, same as Vista. I removed all the RAM and tested them one by one, and all showed up in the Bios correctly. I then put in 3 sticks so they aren't in dual and that only 3gb is there, and the same: 2815 even after scanning and everything. I am completely lost on what to do.......

That is the message I get from the icon in my Vista tray. When I try to manually check for Windows Updates I get the message that I need to "first install an update for Windows Update". When I try to install that update for Windows Update, I get error code 80070643. There is a lot written about Windows Update error 80070643 having specifically to do with restarting the Office Source Engine for Microsoft Office 2003. HOWEVER, I do not have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system and this is not my issue! I am quite fearful at this point that I am vulnerable to all sorts of attacks considering that I haven't updated Vista for about 6 months now. This is not good.

Microsoft Update was first released a few years ago for Windows XP and Server 2003 as a great way to update all of your Microsoft software installed on your PC. Not only would it update Windows, but it would also update Microsoft Office. Are you a Microsoft Outlook user? If so, Microsoft Update would even download updated junk mail signatures when they are released.
In Windows Vista the new Windows Update application is no longer web-based. Microsoft has built-in the old Microsoft Update functionality into the new interface but you need to turn it on before you can use it. Follow these steps to turn on updates for other Microsoft applications: ...
I've just gotten an Acer Aspire 6920, which came with Windows Vista SP1 preinstalled (Beforehand, let me just say I normally use Linux, the only reason I want to keep this operating system is because there MIGHT be some programs that don't have native replacements, or run in wine that I may need at university - Without that,, I wouldn't even bother with Windows, apologies to Microsoft.)
After the usual "Hey there, you bought an Acer, let us preinstall about 50 programs, and let you reboot 6 times in the process", I was up and running (Well, after another reboot for updates that is.) - All went well for a day or so, no problems, starting up went fine for a few times. Then, suddenly, without anything from my part, the system refused to boot. It went through the BIOS fine, and showed the little blinking underscore (So, nothing in Windows yet, all BIOS) - Then it restarted, went through the BIOS, showed it's pretty underscore, rebooted, etc. etc. No error given anywhere during the process. Pressing F12 (Windows bootloader screen) did nothing, it'd just reboot before something could do anything.
I installed Ubuntu on the thing (Which, for the record, works absolutely brilliant.) - And allowed it to overwrite the MBR with GRUB. GRUB can boot into Ubuntu no-problem, and has detected Vista in the correct partition (SDA2) - It allowed me to choose it from it's list, after which the system instantly rebooted to BIOS->GRUB, and back to the selection list.
Currently I have 2 HDD. One SATA, with Vista on it, one IDE, with an old XP copy on it. I am booting from the SATA HDD. Well the I have my DVD Drive as the IDE Master, the HDD as the Slave (All I do on the IDE HDD is recover files). Well BOIS sees all the drives, Configures correctly (I think), but then I get into windows. It sees C: and D: Paritions on the SATA) but not the IDE Hard Drive. It sees the DVD RW drive too. So, what's wrong? If I unplug the DVD Drive and set the Samsung as IDE Master, It works fine. I can't set the HD as master and the DVD as slave though; the ribbon doesn't bend that way.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI put together a new system, and the hard drive shows its true size (250GB) in the bios, however during the windows vista 64bit installation the hard drive says its only 232 GB. I then exited the installtion and restarted. It still said it was 232GB. I continued on with the installation hoping to see if it would change once Windows was installed with all the drivers. I paritioned the drive so that windows would be 50GB and the rest of the drive would be for whatever i wanted and i would split it up later. I proceeded to format the remainder of the hard drive before i went on to install windows, and it stayed there for a while and then i realised it locked up and i got a BSOD.
I reset the computer, and went on to install windows and i didnt bother to format the remainder of the hard drive. Windows installed without any problems, but when i get to windows, the drive still shows as 232GB. I ran a memory test from a Kubuntu CD and its not the ram.
I understand that Vista SP2 RC update has to be uninstalled before installing SP2 RTM update(when bcomes available). Does 5the Windows Update automatically uninstall SP2 RC update or does it has to be done manually?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe last time an update was installed was in January..since the next time i was offered an update, Windows Update or any of the programs that use windows update fail to update. Also i can't download the updates manually..standalone msu installers also dont work.. windows defender, IE8 installations also fail to update. And unfortunately i have deleted the recent system restore checkpoints before i knew about this problem. Windows Update gives error 80070002, i have tried the "solution" to delete temp update files, and all other solutions i could find on the internet. Windows defender gives the same error.
The updates can be downloaded from windows update, but cannot be download (not even manually in .msu package) I also lost many shortcut files of MS Office (the icon turned white and they lost their target). Some shortcuts of 3rd party programs are also lost (which were supposed to be in c:windowsinstallerlabla I have Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 (SP1 came with the ssytem when i bought it). This is very weird. I have no other choice than to reformat drive and use recovery disk.
I've been messing around in my BIOS. Installing some faster RAM and trying a slight overclock (2.4 t0 2.7Ghz on a Q6600) and seem to have caused myself several problems. Firstly I tried to push it a bit further on the FSB- from 1200 to 1300-the system wouldn't boot and wouldn't let me into the BIOS. I eventually got round this by removing the mobo battery. I was able to get back into the BIOS and revert to my original oc. However when I booted I got a re register Windows this is not a genuine version notice. I had to 'phone microsoft and get a new activation ID. I'm now back in windows (Vista HP 64 bit) but seem to have a few left over issues. My clock was set back to 2006 and that meant I couldn't activate Gmail etc. I went back into the BIOS and reset the date but could not change the day. So it's 3.19PM on Monday the 22nd of September, 2008. I've tried everything I can think of but cannot find a way to make it Friday, which it is.
Also I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. This keeps reporting that my computer is at risk and I need to update. I've updated over a dozen times but it doesn't seem to change and is still telling me it needs to update. These are ther first problems I have noticed. I hope I don't find more. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get my day and date correct and how to convince Kaspersky it's up to date?
I installed the vista 64 system updates. I found that this caused my system update to fail. upon using these forums I found that others with this issue, could not get this to be fixed, without reinstalling/repairing of the operating system..
what I found was microsoft office SP2 was the cause of the problem..the trusted installer was missing in the windows servicing folder....
