BIOS Sees The IDE HDD, Windows Does Not Configures

Mar 30, 2009

Currently I have 2 HDD. One SATA, with Vista on it, one IDE, with an old XP copy on it. I am booting from the SATA HDD. Well the I have my DVD Drive as the IDE Master, the HDD as the Slave (All I do on the IDE HDD is recover files). Well BOIS sees all the drives, Configures correctly (I think), but then I get into windows. It sees C: and D: Paritions on the SATA) but not the IDE Hard Drive. It sees the DVD RW drive too. So, what's wrong? If I unplug the DVD Drive and set the Samsung as IDE Master, It works fine. I can't set the HD as master and the DVD as slave though; the ribbon doesn't bend that way.

Outlook 2007 Repeatedly Installs And Configures

Dec 1, 2008

Just installed Outlook 2007 today. Seems that when opening Outlook or when sending messages that Windows installer is repeatedly running before things are done. States gathering necessary information or configuring Outlook in notification boxes and then things will finally process once all this stops. Is this a none issue with Outlook and Vista that one has to live with?

PC Sees 2 Different GPU

Oct 25, 2008

I installed a Radeon HD3870 into my Gateway GT 5676 pc which has/had intergrated HD 3200 on the MB. I used Driver Cleaner Pro to clear out the 3200 drivers and loaded the 3870 card and drivers.

When I run:
Device Manager it sees HD3870
System Info it sees HD 3870
GPU-Z it sees the HD 3870
BUT
Dx Diag sees the old 3200! and
C Cleaner lists the 3200,How do I get then all to see my HD 3870? I think my benchmark scores are on the low side.

Only Sees 3gb Of Ram, Have 4gb

Feb 28, 2009

I have Windows Vista 64 bit Edition, which I have installed SP1 on. I have 4gb of Ram, which is correctly shown in the System Information (this is also shown as 4gb in my 32bit Vista OS). But here is the problem, in the Perfomance tab of Task Manager it shows that I only have 3070MB of Physical Memory. In the Resource Monitor confirms this. My motherboard supports 8gb ram, and I am using Crucial memory, the model of which is supported by the motherboard.

XP/ Dual Boot, Sees Vista As In E:

Sep 4, 2008

I've scoured the related threads on such dual boot issues in this forum, and my actual situation appears not to be exactly addressed. I have a dual boot system, with XP in the primary partition (50GB), and with Vista in the first logical partition (150GB). XP sees itself naturally as being in C:, and sees Vista as in E: (absurdly seeing the CD/DVD drive as D:), whereas Vista sees itself as C: and XP being in D:.

What I want to do at the moment is NOT ONLY to enable myself to boot straight into Vista, and NOT ONLY to clear out XP, but also to move my Vista installation to the physical position where XP is at the moment, so that it is on the outside of the disk and would have better disk performance - the same reason that good HD defragmenters put the most-used files on the outside of disk or at least of the respective partition.............

32-bit Only Sees 128gb Of Large Hard Drive

Mar 23, 2008

I use Vista Home Premium full install with 4 SATA hard drives. My data drive is a WD 750-gig. Disk Management sees 698.64gb with no unallocated space. It's an active partition on a basic disk. But when I open "computer" or an explore page, it sees the smaller value.

I've found solutions for xp/2000 that involve enabling 48-bit LBA, but I haven't seen anything on Vista. I don't recall being prompted for the SATA drivers during the load (F6) but I can't promise anything because it's been awhile.

ITunes No Longer Sees IPod When Connected

I am running VISTA home premium. On my previous machine, I was running XP Home and connecting my iPod to the computer thru a powered HUB. It worked fine, and iTunes recognized my iPod. When I migrated to this new machine with VISTA, iTunes no longer sees my iPod when it's connected, and I have to precariously connect it through one of the USB ports on the face of the tower (since all the ones in the rear are occupied).

REboot To BIOS Before Windows Loads.

Jun 19, 2008

I've just gotten an Acer Aspire 6920, which came with Windows Vista SP1 preinstalled (Beforehand, let me just say I normally use Linux, the only reason I want to keep this operating system is because there MIGHT be some programs that don't have native replacements, or run in wine that I may need at university - Without that,, I wouldn't even bother with Windows, apologies to Microsoft.)

After the usual "Hey there, you bought an Acer, let us preinstall about 50 programs, and let you reboot 6 times in the process", I was up and running (Well, after another reboot for updates that is.) - All went well for a day or so, no problems, starting up went fine for a few times. Then, suddenly, without anything from my part, the system refused to boot. It went through the BIOS fine, and showed the little blinking underscore (So, nothing in Windows yet, all BIOS) - Then it restarted, went through the BIOS, showed it's pretty underscore, rebooted, etc. etc. No error given anywhere during the process. Pressing F12 (Windows bootloader screen) did nothing, it'd just reboot before something could do anything.

I installed Ubuntu on the thing (Which, for the record, works absolutely brilliant.) - And allowed it to overwrite the MBR with GRUB. GRUB can boot into Ubuntu no-problem, and has detected Vista in the correct partition (SDA2) - It allowed me to choose it from it's list, after which the system instantly rebooted to BIOS->GRUB, and back to the selection list.

HD Shows True Size In BIOS, But Not In Windows

Mar 1, 2009

I put together a new system, and the hard drive shows its true size (250GB) in the bios, however during the windows vista 64bit installation the hard drive says its only 232 GB. I then exited the installtion and restarted. It still said it was 232GB. I continued on with the installation hoping to see if it would change once Windows was installed with all the drivers. I paritioned the drive so that windows would be 50GB and the rest of the drive would be for whatever i wanted and i would split it up later. I proceeded to format the remainder of the hard drive before i went on to install windows, and it stayed there for a while and then i realised it locked up and i got a BSOD.

I reset the computer, and went on to install windows and i didnt bother to format the remainder of the hard drive. Windows installed without any problems, but when i get to windows, the drive still shows as 232GB. I ran a memory test from a Kubuntu CD and its not the ram.

Bios And Revert Would Not Bios

Sep 19, 2008

I've been messing around in my BIOS. Installing some faster RAM and trying a slight overclock (2.4 t0 2.7Ghz on a Q6600) and seem to have caused myself several problems. Firstly I tried to push it a bit further on the FSB- from 1200 to 1300-the system wouldn't boot and wouldn't let me into the BIOS. I eventually got round this by removing the mobo battery. I was able to get back into the BIOS and revert to my original oc. However when I booted I got a re register Windows this is not a genuine version notice. I had to 'phone microsoft and get a new activation ID. I'm now back in windows (Vista HP 64 bit) but seem to have a few left over issues. My clock was set back to 2006 and that meant I couldn't activate Gmail etc. I went back into the BIOS and reset the date but could not change the day. So it's 3.19PM on Monday the 22nd of September, 2008. I've tried everything I can think of but cannot find a way to make it Friday, which it is.

Also I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. This keeps reporting that my computer is at risk and I need to update. I've updated over a dozen times but it doesn't seem to change and is still telling me it needs to update. These are ther first problems I have noticed. I hope I don't find more. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get my day and date correct and how to convince Kaspersky it's up to date?

Incorrectly Sees "Multiple Networks" Can't Connected

Mar 23, 2008

I have a wired router connected to a combination wired/wireless switch (both are LinkSys and pretty old). The PC in question has a wired connection to the switch. In the Network and Sharing Center, Vista sees two Networks: Network (private) and Unidentified Network (public), but both have the same IP information. Both also say local and internet access, but I cannot connect to the Internet. Disabling one of the active connections (one of the fixes suggested by Windows) causes all network connections to be disabled. I have tried resetting the router and switch, renewing the DHCP lease and resetting the network adapter to no avail. The most frustrating aspect of this problem is that it is intermittent. Sometimes, without apparent reason, the computer will "just work." There is another Vista PC also with a wired connection to the switch that has no trouble connecting to the internet and correctly sees only one network.

How Get Into BIOS?

Mar 2, 2009

I can't get the computer to boot from the disk. I can't get into my BIOS or anything because for some reason my keyboard won't work until the login screen. What are some other methods for reinstalling that don't require a keyboard, or if someone can give me some hints on how to fix this keyboard problem. I've tried 4 different keyboards and none of them do anything. I've tried 3 usb ones and 1 prongy one. The prongy one won't even work so I guess that's out of the question. What are my options? I just want to clean everything. I don't care how.....

Updating The BIOS

Sep 7, 2009

Hi i have just bought a new laptop as i fried the MoBo in my last one which i bought in the early days of Vista, not realising what system requirements were for Vista i landed up with a very under resourced in the hardware dept. laptop and i am shure my constant tinkering with the hardware caused the death of it.

Which brings me to my query (now that i am overly paranoid about tinkering with hardware) i have been researching and have found there is very mixed opinion on applying Bios updates and was wondering what people here thoughts. I have two pending Bios updates 1st addresses better support for SP2 and the 2nd improves system performance & LCD panel brightness.

and if i apply these updates do i need to do both updates or just apply the current one, any opinions would be greatfully received.

Fix MBR - No Access To Bios

Oct 17, 2009

I thought I would try Ubuntu on my computer. I have a Microsoft Wireless keyboard and mouse. They both worked while setting up dual boot. Once completed, Ubuntu loaded, however I didn't have a keyboard and mouse to select the operating system. They worked well once in Ubuntu. I changed the boot OS default to Vista 64 and I have access to Vista again.

The problem is that no keyboard I try allows me access to the bios. I've tried unplugging the drives as well, still with no luck. I want to repair Vista (MBR)using the disk, however can't change the boot order in the bios. Is there a way to repair MBR from within Vista?
