Harry Potter-Order Of The Phoenix

Jul 12, 2009

I have had HP Order of the Phoenix running on Vista Ultimate before.Just tried running it and it does not appear to run.I can see that there is a hp.exe process (by guess is its the gaming trying to start).I wait for a while and nothing happens. If the game dvd is not in the drive it complains as expected. So I load up the dvd; still nothing appears to happen. Kaspersky has been installed since the last time it ran; I have checked and the game is trusted to run.Even tried running it as admin; no luck. Tried uninsalling/reinstalling (a number of times); no luck.

Photo Editor Compatable?

How do I get a version of "Microsoft Photo Editor" that is compatable with Vista 64 bit Home Premium edition operating system? Photo Ed 3.01 is the only one I found to download, and it is not compatable with my Vista. I also use other photo editing programs, but Photo Ed is the fastest to re-size, smudge, and crop jpg images.

How Can Registry Editor Policies

Aug 28, 2009

I have just purchased a new computer (a Dell Inspiron 545) but I am having a problem with the recently used program list in the start menu. Random programs are showing up in there without me using them and the programs I do use aren't getting added. I have checked the settings and both of the necessary checkboxes are ticked. So I had a search on this forum and found a post that advised you to change a file in the registry at this address : HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer however in the registry editor treeview the Policies folder is empty.

Vista Registry Editor Was Blocked

May 3, 2009

I have a simple problem: access to registry editor was blocked by some malware. Now I removed the malware (an old worm which somehow passed through Windows Defender while I was browsing a DVD). But access to Registry Editor is still blocked and I have to restore it manually. However, I have Vista Home Premium x64, which doesn't include Group Policy Editor. How else can I restore access to regedit?

Boot Configuration Data Editor Frequently Asked Questions

May 16, 2008

I copied the following from the "Boot Configuration Data Editor Frequently Asked Questions" which I found found elsewhere on the Microsoft website. Multiboot Environments. Can I install Windows Vista on a computer that already contains an operating system? Yes. You can install Windows Vista on a different partition. It is best to install Windows Vista after you install the older operating systems. Older operating systems will continue to use Boot.ini for boot configuration. Should I replace the code that used to work with Boot.ini to now use BCD on Windows Vista? No. You will need to alter your code so that it uses Boot.ini for the older operating systems, and so that it uses BCD on Windows Vista. What does "your code" mean?

If I want to install both XP & Vista on separate partitions, apparently I need to install XP first. During the XP install I have the option of creating 2 partitions don't I? It's my understanding that there can be only 1 primary partition & only the primary partition is bootable. Every other partition is an extended partition. This is what confuses me. XP uses the boot.ini file & is installed first on the primary partition. Won't Vista be installed on an extended partition? Since XP uses the boot.ini file & Vista uses the bcdedit file, which file is used if both XP & Vista are installed in a multiboot configuration? Which would be the default OS? To further complicate matters, suppose that I want to install XP, Vista & Linux. Which of the 3 do I install first since Linux uses a different boot file?

Bios And Revert Would Not Bios

Sep 19, 2008

I've been messing around in my BIOS. Installing some faster RAM and trying a slight overclock (2.4 t0 2.7Ghz on a Q6600) and seem to have caused myself several problems. Firstly I tried to push it a bit further on the FSB- from 1200 to 1300-the system wouldn't boot and wouldn't let me into the BIOS. I eventually got round this by removing the mobo battery. I was able to get back into the BIOS and revert to my original oc. However when I booted I got a re register Windows this is not a genuine version notice. I had to 'phone microsoft and get a new activation ID. I'm now back in windows (Vista HP 64 bit) but seem to have a few left over issues. My clock was set back to 2006 and that meant I couldn't activate Gmail etc. I went back into the BIOS and reset the date but could not change the day. So it's 3.19PM on Monday the 22nd of September, 2008. I've tried everything I can think of but cannot find a way to make it Friday, which it is.

Also I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. This keeps reporting that my computer is at risk and I need to update. I've updated over a dozen times but it doesn't seem to change and is still telling me it needs to update. These are ther first problems I have noticed. I hope I don't find more. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get my day and date correct and how to convince Kaspersky it's up to date?

How Get Into BIOS?

Mar 2, 2009

I can't get the computer to boot from the disk. I can't get into my BIOS or anything because for some reason my keyboard won't work until the login screen. What are some other methods for reinstalling that don't require a keyboard, or if someone can give me some hints on how to fix this keyboard problem. I've tried 4 different keyboards and none of them do anything. I've tried 3 usb ones and 1 prongy one. The prongy one won't even work so I guess that's out of the question. What are my options? I just want to clean everything. I don't care how.....

Updating The BIOS

Sep 7, 2009

Hi i have just bought a new laptop as i fried the MoBo in my last one which i bought in the early days of Vista, not realising what system requirements were for Vista i landed up with a very under resourced in the hardware dept. laptop and i am shure my constant tinkering with the hardware caused the death of it.

Which brings me to my query (now that i am overly paranoid about tinkering with hardware) i have been researching and have found there is very mixed opinion on applying Bios updates and was wondering what people here thoughts. I have two pending Bios updates 1st addresses better support for SP2 and the 2nd improves system performance & LCD panel brightness.

and if i apply these updates do i need to do both updates or just apply the current one, any opinions would be greatfully received.

Fix MBR - No Access To Bios

Oct 17, 2009

I thought I would try Ubuntu on my computer. I have a Microsoft Wireless keyboard and mouse. They both worked while setting up dual boot. Once completed, Ubuntu loaded, however I didn't have a keyboard and mouse to select the operating system. They worked well once in Ubuntu. I changed the boot OS default to Vista 64 and I have access to Vista again.

The problem is that no keyboard I try allows me access to the bios. I've tried unplugging the drives as well, still with no luck. I want to repair Vista (MBR)using the disk, however can't change the boot order in the bios. Is there a way to repair MBR from within Vista?

BIOS Shows 4GB RAM Of 2GB RAM

Apr 14, 2008

I have a Lenovo X61 machine with Windows Vista. I have 3 GB RAM...1GB+2GB in the 2 memory slots. I got a new 2GB RAM and pulled upgraded the machine to 4GB by pulling out the 1GB. After the installation, the BIOS shows 4GB RAM, but Windows shows only 3GB. In computer properties, it shows 3062MB. In system information, it shows

Total Physical Memory - 3061.50 MB
Available Physical Memory - 1.32 GB
Total Virtual Memory - 6.16 GB
Available Virtual Memory - 4.36 GB
Page File Space - 3.28 GB

Why is it not detecting the 4GB Memory though it shows up in BIOS. Do I need to upgrade anything or change any settings?

Black Screen Right After Bios.

Jun 18, 2008

I have Vista Ulimate 64-bit and everytime that I reboot I get a black screen before the Microsoft Windows scrolling bar.

This is the sequence.
- I reboot.
- I get my bios information screen.
- I get the white, blinking line in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Then the screen goes black with no hard drive activity.

I then can perform a Complete PC restore from my second partition on the same SATA Hard Drive and I will then be able to boot into Vista with no problem.....until I reboot, then I get the Black screen again. It is a vicious cycle.

I have tried to remove video cards (2 x 8800 GTS), memory (4 GB), sound cards (X-Fi Music), load the default bios settings....nothing works. Only a Complete PC Restore cures it, but only until I need to reboot the PC.
