View 6 RepliesI have a simple problem: access to registry editor was blocked by some malware. Now I removed the malware (an old worm which somehow passed through Windows Defender while I was browsing a DVD). But access to Registry Editor is still blocked and I have to restore it manually. However, I have Vista Home Premium x64, which doesn't include Group Policy Editor. How else can I restore access to regedit?

Since Microsoft knows the default settings within XP to create the VPN connections why not have MS make available the necessary changes to the default settings in VISTA in order to make this connection work from VISTA. Have had to add an XP box at the office for on connection. And more money for MS software.

Does anybody out there know if there's a free antivirus app that works with Vista? My Norton subscription ran out and don't think Norton is worth what Symantec charges. I know Computer Associates had a very good app for winxp, can't seem to find the same for Vista.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit, and on one particular drive, I had backed up some files with extremely long names from a different system. The kind of stuff you find as temp files in the "Content.IE5" sub directory of "Temporary Internet Files."
Now, I'm trying to delete a parent directory where all these files are located. But Vista, in it's ultimate wisdom is giving me an error, indicating that it cannot delete these files becuse the overall path is too long - It suggested I move the files to a place with a "shorter path," but when I try, it won't let me do it for the same damned reason! The Source path is too long Nothing works.
Attempting to delete individual files, the parent directory, the "grand parent" directory all fail because Vista attempts to calculate/sum space and thus accesses each individual file, and fails because the "path is too long." When I try to rename individual files, it grays out the "rename" option. Is there any way I can either get rid of these files or bypass the "file length" warning so I can delete them? Formatting the drive is *not* an option. This is a SAN drive with lots of stuff on it and I'd never be able to off load it all.
After reading multiple articles on various site regarding how the processor power management works in Vista, I have yet to find a resolution to my current situation. I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on my HP Pavilion tx 2110 with an AMD X2 Mobile Tech TL-62 2.1Ghz and 3gb of RAM. Whenever my laptop is unplugged from the wall and running on the battery, Vista seems to limit the processor frequency to 38% of the max (roughly 800mhz) no mater the power plan or processor load. While the computer is plugged in however, everything runs beautifully with the frequency at 100%.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a fairly new desktop (8 months old) with windows xp. On another partition I installed Vista Business, then updated the chipset drivers for my system. The network adapter was not picked up so I installed it manually with the updated drivers from the manufacturer (integrated adapter) which seemed to work (it made a connection) but when I re-booted there was no network connection and the light on the card is not longer on. In the device manager it says the card is working properly. I tried reinstalling the adapter driver but to no avail. My network/internet connection works fine in XP. I'm suspecting it may be some sort of security issue or possibly something with the drivers although I contacted the manufacturer of the machine (Systemax) and they said they've had no reported problems with the drivers.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI copied the following from the "Boot Configuration Data Editor Frequently Asked Questions" which I found found elsewhere on the Microsoft website. Multiboot Environments. Can I install Windows Vista on a computer that already contains an operating system? Yes. You can install Windows Vista on a different partition. It is best to install Windows Vista after you install the older operating systems. Older operating systems will continue to use Boot.ini for boot configuration. Should I replace the code that used to work with Boot.ini to now use BCD on Windows Vista? No. You will need to alter your code so that it uses Boot.ini for the older operating systems, and so that it uses BCD on Windows Vista. What does "your code" mean?
If I want to install both XP & Vista on separate partitions, apparently I need to install XP first. During the XP install I have the option of creating 2 partitions don't I? It's my understanding that there can be only 1 primary partition & only the primary partition is bootable. Every other partition is an extended partition. This is what confuses me. XP uses the boot.ini file & is installed first on the primary partition. Won't Vista be installed on an extended partition? Since XP uses the boot.ini file & Vista uses the bcdedit file, which file is used if both XP & Vista are installed in a multiboot configuration? Which would be the default OS? To further complicate matters, suppose that I want to install XP, Vista & Linux. Which of the 3 do I install first since Linux uses a different boot file?
