Why does a VPN connection setup with an XP computer so easy and it fails when I try to set up the connection with a VISTA Ultimate computer. Since Microsoft knows the default settings within XP to create the VPN connections why not have MS make available the necessary changes to the default settings in VISTA in order to make this connection work from VISTA. Have had to add an XP box at the office for on connection. And more money for MS software.
I have just started to learn C and need some software to write my source. I have tried Turbo C++, Borland C++, just to name a few and they will not work with Vista 64 bit. I get errors that says to check with the software manufacture. Does anyone know of a C IDE with GUI that works with vista 64?
I installed my Sims 1 game and everything that should be at the bottom of the screen is in the middle. Evidently it isn't compatible with Vista. or is there a way I can make it compatible. I already clicked on properties and picked run as XP and I already click to run as administrator. Nothing works.
Does anybody out there know if there's a free antivirus app that works with Vista? My Norton subscription ran out and don't think Norton is worth what Symantec charges. I know Computer Associates had a very good app for winxp, can't seem to find the same for Vista.
I have a software which uses FTP to upload in the background. The software's FTP works in XP but not on Vista. Is there anything I should check on Vista?
I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit, and on one particular drive, I had backed up some files with extremely long names from a different system. The kind of stuff you find as temp files in the "Content.IE5" sub directory of "Temporary Internet Files."
Now, I'm trying to delete a parent directory where all these files are located. But Vista, in it's ultimate wisdom is giving me an error, indicating that it cannot delete these files becuse the overall path is too long - It suggested I move the files to a place with a "shorter path," but when I try, it won't let me do it for the same damned reason! The Source path is too long Nothing works.
Attempting to delete individual files, the parent directory, the "grand parent" directory all fail because Vista attempts to calculate/sum space and thus accesses each individual file, and fails because the "path is too long." When I try to rename individual files, it grays out the "rename" option. Is there any way I can either get rid of these files or bypass the "file length" warning so I can delete them? Formatting the drive is *not* an option. This is a SAN drive with lots of stuff on it and I'd never be able to off load it all.
After reading multiple articles on various site regarding how the processor power management works in Vista, I have yet to find a resolution to my current situation. I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on my HP Pavilion tx 2110 with an AMD X2 Mobile Tech TL-62 2.1Ghz and 3gb of RAM. Whenever my laptop is unplugged from the wall and running on the battery, Vista seems to limit the processor frequency to 38% of the max (roughly 800mhz) no mater the power plan or processor load. While the computer is plugged in however, everything runs beautifully with the frequency at 100%.
I have a fairly new desktop (8 months old) with windows xp. On another partition I installed Vista Business, then updated the chipset drivers for my system. The network adapter was not picked up so I installed it manually with the updated drivers from the manufacturer (integrated adapter) which seemed to work (it made a connection) but when I re-booted there was no network connection and the light on the card is not longer on. In the device manager it says the card is working properly. I tried reinstalling the adapter driver but to no avail. My network/internet connection works fine in XP. I'm suspecting it may be some sort of security issue or possibly something with the drivers although I contacted the manufacturer of the machine (Systemax) and they said they've had no reported problems with the drivers.
A friend has word processor files with the extension .wps created in Works 4 in Win95. He has bought a new computer with Vista loaded. He says he's unable to get Vista (I think he said Works 9) to read these old files.How can he convert them
after using works word processing to construct a Resume and coverletter, once sent as an email attachment, the recipents could not open them. They had XP systems and I had the same problem when sending to a computer on the network. Do I have to have a converter system (works to Excel) or something of that type.
Right now I'm using Vista Ultimate 32-bit. I've 3gb of ram and I have all drivers for 64-bit. Is it reasonable to go for 64-bit? And, will all 32-bit software work in 64-bit OS?
I have Diskeeper 2008 which does NOT work on large drives (over 1TB). The new Diskeeper does, but I don't want to pay their ridiculous prices again, now with add-ons. (yes, I have a lot of files on my Vista box) So, I need:

firefox or ie 32 bit does not work, it wont connect to the internet, neither will aim. however i can go on websites with ie x64 bit version. but i cant go to Internet and such because flash doesnt work with the 64 bit version.

Most posts want advice on how to resolve an issue with existing hardware or software. I'm asking for advice on what to buy to avoid any issues. I need a SATA DVD burner for my new x64 build. So far I just have the case, power supply, and processor. In my wish list is the RAM, MB, HD, and OS. Each has been verified to at least "work" with x64 Vista according to the MS compatibility list. Now I'm looking for a DVD burner that some of you existing x64 users have installed and like.

I have had this problem for a long time, but i'm beginning to get really sick and tired of it.
First and foremost, let me quickly explain the issue:
- Autorun NEVER works - When i insert a disc or USB device, nothing happens - When i go to My Computer and double click on the drive, Vista asks me if i want to format the CD/DVD - Vista thinks that every CD/DVD i insert is blank... This includes mounting an ISO via Daemon tools........
I have the CD of vista and when i try format the pc it doesnt works. I put the CD, after I restart the pc and it runs like the CD isnt there. It dont say nathing like: "Press any key", or something like that. The computer is new.
My old mouse is dieing so i got a new one, i installed it as i was told to but it does not work. When i plug it in saying it was installed ok and there is power getting to the mouse as it all lights up, but the laser never turns on. I collected all the working mouses i had avalible and found that none of them work but if i plug my old mouse in it works right away.
Just thought I'd pass along some info I came across after setting up my newest 64 bit machine and connecting an older but definitely not outdated Epson Perfection scanner. I really love this scanner and it's auto-restoration features for older photos, so I was not willing to give it up. I found the following website with instructions for finding the correct drivers. Apparently, Epson built support for x64, but hid the drivers within the installer for 32 bit systems. No search on any version of their support website shows driver downloads under 64 bit. I did what was described in that article, and have my scanner working beautifully on Vista x64. I can say that I downloaded drivers both from the European site as well as the U.S. site. The driver file each installs is no different, but the scan utility is a slightly different version. I went with the U.S. version in the end, it being what looks like a higher version number (3.04a instead of 3.0u... hard to tell if there's any real difference, as there was no language issues or anything).
I'm running Home Premium x64. The build is only ~1month old and previously the sidebar was working fine. Apparently I've fouled something up. The sidebar loads fine, runs fine, looks fine. Here is the problem; Gadgets like Pro Weather, or Hermes, where the user has the option of opening up a larger screen to the left of the gadget.. those screens are unresponsive.
For example in the weather app, I click the little arrow to expand the gadget, it brings up the larger window with options to view the radar, or nightly forecasts, or moon phases etc, but my clicking ANYWHERE on that screen is unresponsive.. it just doesn't work. I thought maybe it was the weather app, but then noticed the same thing on Hermes. Hermes is a news ticker. When you hover over a story it brings up the full story in a pane to the left, with clickable links for the actual web story. Again, all mouse input in this pane seems to be restricted, and the links do not work.
I don't recall the exact moment when I lost control of this. Over the past few weeks I have installed / uninstalled Norton AV, and used a utility called 'Vista Manager'. Currently I am running no AV. The Vista Manager program is pretty neat actually. I didn't make any kind of drastic changes with it, but thats not to say it isn't someone related. Maybe it stopped a required service or something? Who Knows.
I recently installed Vista Ultimate x64, and I'm puzzled at how sleep mode works. It went into sleep mode, and neither keyboard nor mouse could wake it up again. I pressed sleep button again on keyboard, and computer went to hibernation, then tried to wake it up again but nothing. I finally had to push reset on the case itself.
I have a laptop running windows vista home premium 32bit. I've been having trouble with freezing problems where everything will freeze up except my mouse. I can move the mouse pointer around but i can't click on anything and bringing up the task manager using ctrl-alt-delete or ctrl-shift-escape doesn't work either. I have to do a forced shut down.
This happens at random times. I could be browsing the internet, word processing, listening to music, or anything. It happens both on a clean vista install and regular manufacturer (sony) os. I have all the updated drivers. What could be the problem?
I'm having a disagreement with a friend about how System Restore works. Bottom line if you go back to a previous restore point -- do you lose (are they removed) any document files (whether jpg, doc, whatever) you've created/saved since then -- or does it only effect system / application files? Is there a good place on the net you could point me to read more about this?
