Slow Upload Speed, Wouldn't Upload

May 21, 2008

Recently I noticed that my Internet's upload speed is EXTREMELY low. No problem with Download, I have almost a 3M Download. But i ran a speed test on peedtest.net -The Global Broadband Speed Test, and downlaod was fine, no problem, but i simply wouldn't upload. I tried sending an email with a small attachment, very slow, took like 30 minutes to add the attachement. I have AVG 8.0 Internet Security, with everything turned on.

Here is my HijackThis Log.

VPN Works Not With VISTA

Apr 13, 2008

Why does a VPN connection setup with an XP computer so easy and it fails when I try to set up the connection with a VISTA Ultimate computer. Since Microsoft knows the default settings within XP to create the VPN connections why not have MS make available the necessary changes to the default settings in VISTA in order to make this connection work from VISTA. Have had to add an XP box at the office for on connection. And more money for MS software.

Does anybody out there know if there's a free antivirus app that works with Vista? My Norton subscription ran out and don't think Norton is worth what Symantec charges. I know Computer Associates had a very good app for winxp, can't seem to find the same for Vista.

Long File Names In Vista Nothing Works

Feb 21, 2009

I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit, and on one particular drive, I had backed up some files with extremely long names from a different system. The kind of stuff you find as temp files in the "Content.IE5" sub directory of "Temporary Internet Files."

Now, I'm trying to delete a parent directory where all these files are located. But Vista, in it's ultimate wisdom is giving me an error, indicating that it cannot delete these files becuse the overall path is too long - It suggested I move the files to a place with a "shorter path," but when I try, it won't let me do it for the same damned reason! The Source path is too long Nothing works.

Attempting to delete individual files, the parent directory, the "grand parent" directory all fail because Vista attempts to calculate/sum space and thus accesses each individual file, and fails because the "path is too long." When I try to rename individual files, it grays out the "rename" option. Is there any way I can either get rid of these files or bypass the "file length" warning so I can delete them? Formatting the drive is *not* an option. This is a SAN drive with lots of stuff on it and I'd never be able to off load it all.

Processor Power Management Works In Vista?

Mar 23, 2009

After reading multiple articles on various site regarding how the processor power management works in Vista, I have yet to find a resolution to my current situation. I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on my HP Pavilion tx 2110 with an AMD X2 Mobile Tech TL-62 2.1Ghz and 3gb of RAM. Whenever my laptop is unplugged from the wall and running on the battery, Vista seems to limit the processor frequency to 38% of the max (roughly 800mhz) no mater the power plan or processor load. While the computer is plugged in however, everything runs beautifully with the frequency at 100%.

Network/internet Connection Works Fine In XP But Not In Vista

Mar 23, 2008

I have a fairly new desktop (8 months old) with windows xp. On another partition I installed Vista Business, then updated the chipset drivers for my system. The network adapter was not picked up so I installed it manually with the updated drivers from the manufacturer (integrated adapter) which seemed to work (it made a connection) but when I re-booted there was no network connection and the light on the card is not longer on. In the device manager it says the card is working properly. I tried reinstalling the adapter driver but to no avail. My network/internet connection works fine in XP. I'm suspecting it may be some sort of security issue or possibly something with the drivers although I contacted the manufacturer of the machine (Systemax) and they said they've had no reported problems with the drivers.

Choosing Pictures To Upload

I do not edit my pictures in anyway before I upload them.

Here is the results of the test: My home laptop: download 3700 kbps; upload: 117 kbps My work laptop: download 8200 kbps; upload: 2230 kbps This is about the average I get each time I test. Both laptops are connecting through the same Netgear g Router. Both laptops are next to me during the test while the Router is near me. Does anyone know what is likely causing the disparity?

Cannot Save, Open, Download Or Upload!

Jun 29, 2008

I cannot save as on any (ANY!) program that I have. This includes programs that came pre-installed when I picked up the notebook (like Wordpad, for christ's sake). Now, I cannot upload or download anything at all. The dialogue box opens and the hour glass appears. After about five minutes, it informs me that such and such is not responding and the program will have to restart. I recognize that MS has put added percautions in order to prevent piracy. But I cannot even use Wordpad, let alone upload a frickin' video.

I am surprised that someone at MS hasn't been assassinated because of Vista. It is the single worse computer product I have ever (EVER!) used. Send me an email if you want. Just someone please, shed a light on this.

Sudden Upload Speed Slowdown

A few days ago out of the blue my upload speed went down to practically zero. I know it's my computer because the other computers on the network can still upload fine. When I run a speed test the download comes back fine (~1275kbps on a 1536kbps connection) but the upload either doesn't finish or comes back at something like 10kbps. My connection for upload is 800kbps. I use qwest dsl.

Camera To Computer Upload Not Automatic Anymore

Feb 28, 2009

I did have my operating system set up on "Classic" setting to resemble Windows XP and when it was set that way anytime I slid the memory card from my camera in it would pop up the pictures in a new folder in my already existing software I store pictures in. All I needed to do from there were to highlight and drag them into another folder and delete the pictures out of the folder they popped up in...thus emptying the memory card from my camera. Since I have switched the look back to Vista appearance (Vista Home Premium) now I have to go thru Start, Computer, and then click on the drive to open the pictures on the memory card. I also have to manually open my picture editing software manually and drag the pics from the temp folder to my regularly used software to move the pictures. What changed just by changing the appearance of the operating system and how do I get it back without changing the whole appearance back to the "classic" look?

More Background Services Than XP

Programs Run In Background

Mar 18, 2009

I have a problem with my machine running slower whenever I'm on the Web. Recently I discovered that it was because of one or perhaps 2 programs running in the background even after I close the programs. Last month, after performing a system cleanup with my antivirus and antispyware programs, I noticed that the cleanup process was running unusually slow. At some point, I activated RealPlayer and it wouldn't activate. I double-clicked the icon more than once, and it didn't run.

Out of curiosity, I decided to look at my Task Manager, and in the list of programs running under the 'Processes' tab, I noticed 'realplay.exe'. My RealPlayer program was still running in the background, even though I closed the program, and it was chewing up my resources and slowing down my machine. I stopped the process by hitting the 'End Process' button, and noticed that my machine was back up to normal speed. Once in a blue moon, I get the same problem with Mozilla Firefox, and I have to go into my Task Manager to stop that process to be able to run it again.

So far, RealPlayer and Firefox are the only 2 programs that run in the background even after I close them. How to I fix this problem so that I don't have to keep going into my Task Manager to shut down both programs if they continue to run in the background?
