Network/internet Connection Works Fine In XP But Not In Vista
Mar 23, 2008
I have a fairly new desktop (8 months old) with windows xp. On another partition I installed Vista Business, then updated the chipset drivers for my system. The network adapter was not picked up so I installed it manually with the updated drivers from the manufacturer (integrated adapter) which seemed to work (it made a connection) but when I re-booted there was no network connection and the light on the card is not longer on. In the device manager it says the card is working properly. I tried reinstalling the adapter driver but to no avail. My network/internet connection works fine in XP. I'm suspecting it may be some sort of security issue or possibly something with the drivers although I contacted the manufacturer of the machine (Systemax) and they said they've had no reported problems with the drivers.

Ive just had broadband connected to my house. Currently I have a network consisting of four computers connected through an internal switch on one of my computers in one of the bedrooms for ease of cabling. The computer with the broadband modem has been chosen as it is newest and is closest to the telephone line socket. It has two network cards, one connected to the modem and the other to the rest of the network. Independantly, the network connections are running fine (all computers can see each other and transfer data properly) and the internet connection is working well for the computer connected directly to the modem.
The network is setup using Static IP Addresses 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.4 (With 0.1 being for the host) and the modem is connected using a different set of IP addresses. I have also set the internet connection sharing options according to what is required on the microsoft website for both the internet host and clients. I have both Norton Antivirus and Zonealarm activated on all computers but have set them up to allow access to each other. My problem therefore is, despite my broadband connection working on the one computer, and my network connections working, I cannot get ICS to work.

I have two pc's that both run Windows Mail. They have identical setups and use the same email account. The desktop works properly but the Toshiba laptop cannot send emails. Both pc's run McAfee Antivirus. I have tried disabling the the antivirus on the laptop but am still unable to send mail. Problem started when we downloaded Vista updates on 06/13/08.

I have enabled file sharing on my home network so that my wife's XP machine can access photos and music stored on my Vista Home Premium box. Also share printers. I have set up non-password protected sharing, and it works fine overall - I can see everything she shares, and vice versa, printers work, etc. The only problem we're having is the photos. Whenever I add new photos they don't show up until I re-share the folder. If I put new photos in a sub-folder, the sub-folder is visible and can be opened without errors, but it appears empty until I re-share the entire photo folder. I cannot find any information about this problem, but it just occurred to me that I gave the guest account read-only access to the photo folder instead of full permissions. I guess that's one thing to try when I get home, but I would like to keep it read-only so that nothing happens to the pictures accidentally.

Vista has been working great for about 6 months, networking and everything, but just 2 days ago my internet connection dropped and never came back. I looked into it and I am now connected to an "Unidentified Network" with "Local Only" access. I have tried to fix it for 3 days now and have gotten no where. I've tried everything I've read, though I may have missed something, I have even reinstalled Vista 64x.

I notice a big slowdown in my Internet connection speed when I'm using my network connection. For example, while browsing the web I'm listening to some MP3s in iTunes that are stored on my external network hard drive. As soon as I close down iTunes and the music stops my Internet connection speeds up. How can I force the network connection to use just that and not my Internet connection? I'm running Vista Ultimate. I'm connection to a wireless Internet connection that is plugged into another computer.

does creating a network bridge on my computer allow me to connect another LAN cable into a second device straight from my computer? because i want to connect my LAN cable into my PS3, but the cable is too short to reach the PS3. so i wanted to have it so the internet connection goes from my computer into the PS3. if thats correct, what component would i need to make it happen?

I am having the worst problems connecting using a cable connection, which I need because as I am in Europe at the moment, many sites or private homes are not equipped with wireless. Now, when I connect with cable, everything seems to be working fine, the Toshiba connectivity doctor tells me I am connected, the diagnose program assures me that the problem has been resolved etc. etc. and yet whenever I try to connect (IE, Mozilla, Google, I have tried them all), I get an error screen. I have tried everything I could think of, checking my settings etc. Nothing works.
Let me emphasize that:
1) wireless connection works fine
2) it is a problem with my computer, not the host, since I have encountered
the same problem everywhere (libraries with password protected access,
private homes without password protected access etc.).

I want to share the internet connection of my Desktop onto my Laptop. The Desktop is running XP and connects to the internet using the GPRS connection of my cellphone via Bluetooth. The Desktop is connected by cable to a router and from router over wifi to my laptop which has Windows Vista Ultimate.
Both the pc's can ping each other and I've successfully configured them for sharing files and folders. But even though I've shared the gprs dialup connection on XP and selected the corresponding local area connection, Vista is not letting me access to the Internet! I have even disabled the firewall but it's still showing Local only.

We have XP computers and an external hard drive on a network, all working fine. Just got a new Vista computer right out of the box and I can not get it to do anything with the network and none of the other computers can see it either. There are no fancy setups, just a small business network. There isnt even an internet connection we need to deal with. With Vista, all i can see is an "unidentified network" as being seen but it doesnt seem to do anything with it.

One new computer using Vista Home. Installed wireless network card and ran software. Found and established connection to wireless network in the office. Then....I setup the network to be secured, connected with a Win XP computer with no problems using the correct key. Did the same process with the Vista computer, found the network, asked for key, entered correct key and have limited connection. Reset everything on network. Switched back to unsecured and hooked right up. Disabled firewall, the only thing running is McAfee Total Protection, no firewalls.

I started to have problems with Local Area Connection in Vista, during logon there was two networks identified, one that I had set up and one unrecognized. This was a problem, because it disrupted the DHCP discovery. I have read here that many have the same problem, but so far haven't been able to pinpoint the cause. My solution was to try to disable the network connection and enable it. This seemed to work sometimes, but once I rebooted the machine, the whole network adapter had disappeared from device manager. I tried re-installing the driver but Vista doesn't seem to recognize it. How do I get Vista to install it back?

can I speed up my browsing on the internet? I know some sites are slower than others but, as of late, the internet seems to slow down to a crawl yet, when I do the speed test, I end up scoring higher or just where I am supposed to be at. I only use Avast as my A.V. & Spyware + Windows Firewall, no proxies. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.

loss of Internet Connection in Vista; completely loosing my Home Network; random
Internet Lags and Drops; and it seemed the only solution was to Reboot my
Computer to get an Active Internet connection. I applied many of the
Hotfixes; and used all of the Suggestions but nothing seemed to work. The
one thing that did seem to make sense though was the Tech advice here and
their that would say it was a Hardware Issue with Routers, etc.
So this is what I did; I went out and Bought the D-Link DIR-655 which is
Certified to work with Vista. It arrived last week; hooked it up and since
then I have not had 1 Internet Drop; or have I lost my Home Network. Now my
Computer can stay on; go to sleep; and when it wakes I have an immediate
Internet Connection. On the Upside the speeds are much faster as well
instead of your basic 100mbps; im getting 300mbps. So it was well worth the
Upgrade to me. It actually made sense that to take advantage of some of the
new options with Vista Networking that you would need a New Certified Vista
Router. Im actually very glad I did it; no more headaches and reboots. Hope
this helps anyone who was going thru the same Issues I was.
Oh and by the way just so you know here is what I have going on with my
Network: My New PC; 2 Mac Books; 1 older PC; 1 Xbox; 1 PS3; and 1 Wii; and
the VOIP.
I also used to use the Hawking Booster on my Network to help with VOIP lag
and arranging packets; but I also elminate that now because this new Router
arranges the packets and no Lag on the VOIP.

Im upgrading my computer of 5 years within the next 2 weeks. I decided to build a sick machine (Intel i7, DDR3, GTX 280 all the goodies.) With doing so, im going to put 64 bit vista on it. Now as far as my use of the computer, well its simple, gaming. Im usually stuck to the World of Warcraft, FPSs, and RTS. I have no idea what im getting into with vista. With what I'm using the computer for, how should I go about doing stuff on windows to prepare the computer. By this I mean, what drivers do I need, what other software should I install. What do I basically need to make the computer run fine with Vista-64

I have PC1 running windows Vista with a wirels pci card connected to PC2 Running Vista Home Premuim connnected via lan cable to a wirelss N router. I have setup a home network with a name of "Blue" (not really the name), both pc's are configured to the same workgroup. Internet access works on both pc's.
The problem I'm having is trying to share files. When I look at my Network Map on Vista, I can see the XP pc. However when I go to map, but not my network in order to access files on the XP machine. XP doesn't have network map, but when I go into >network, I can see the files I'm sharing on the XP pc, but I cannot see the Vista pc at all. I can view my work group when I navigate to Microsoft Networks but cannot access it. So I can't figure out why I cannot see the XP pc on Vista co I can access the shared (public) folders and the same with the XP pc.

You know that upper-right box that has a magnifying class on it? It says -Google- on it and I can change it to -Live Search- but that&8217;s not consistent with all the other instant search boxes in like WMP, Explorer, Start Menu, etc. I expect it to do something like automatically jump to the phrase I type (within the current page). But it does not. And the best option you have seems to be to select a -Find- on this Page- pop-up and type in a box and press a Find/Next button.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic, and randomly my internet browsers just totally stop trying to connect and just spit out error messages, but everything else still works (usually). MSN, Steam, my antivirus updates on time, everything that isn't HTTP pretty much. The internet browsers will last anywhere from 5 minutes to 24 hours before keeling over. I've done a pretty thorough Google search on this and I'm at least not alone, but in another sense I am...
A lot of people have said "oh I disabled/uninstalled ZoneAlarm or Bitdefender or so and so a program and it worked" but I don't run those. Never have had ZA or anything on my computer. The only program I have in common with the most common ones is Spybot S&D, and I disabled that on startup and sure enough, didn't work. I do not have any Vista service packs, I don't think. Nothing explicitly called that anyway. I have a bunch of updates that I installed when I got the computer, so I can't uninstall SP1 to fix it since I don't think I even have it.

After years of being fine on my Vista machines (we have 2 on the network, hard wired through a router usually.. however now they are connected directly to the modem) that have both either lost their internet connection or after many reboots of the modem, connect to a uselessly slow internet connection. I've reset the router, and then gave up alltogether for the direct line to the modem. Comcast came today, couldn't figure it out.. they replaced the modem and claim the internet is fine from their end.
I did install Comcast's Norton Suite 3 weeks ago, which ran fine until now. I slow started having problems, Tivo Desktop couldn't transfer shows, then wifi connected devices like my iphone would ask over and over again for the password to the network. Then my VNC program stopped connecting to my home computer. Then, ultimately the internet connection was lost. All these things happened a few days after each other. Comcast has told me I am on my own, they don't know what else to do. The kicker is that the internet is good and fast if I boot in SAFE MODE. I uninstalled Norton on one of my desktops, but still slow internet.
So, the tech tells me the problem is with Vista, says there must've been an update that went on both computers that is causing the problem. So I have no clue where to go to from there. I unistalled Norton on the one machine using Windows Uninstall to get rid of it. Is part of it there still? It's so weird that both computers have the identical problem, yet its not the internet connection that is causing it.

Why does a VPN connection setup with an XP computer so easy and it fails when I try to set up the connection with a VISTA Ultimate computer. Since Microsoft knows the default settings within XP to create the VPN connections why not have MS make available the necessary changes to the default settings in VISTA in order to make this connection work from VISTA. Have had to add an XP box at the office for on connection. And more money for MS software.

At my office we have 2 computers (both Vista version 6.0) networked together. I'll call them computer A and computer B. I can access, modify, and save Computer B files from computer A - I can save them directly to B or A. However, when I'm on computer B, it will only let me access files on computer A, which I then have to save to computer B if I want to save any changes I've made. I get a message saying they're read-only files and I don't have authorization to save to computer A.
