Feb 25, 2009I recently installed Vista Ultimate x64, and I'm puzzled at how sleep mode works. It went into sleep mode, and neither keyboard nor mouse could wake it up again. I pressed sleep button again on keyboard, and computer went to hibernation, then tried to wake it up again but nothing. I finally had to push reset on the case itself.

Apr 7, 2010After years of being fine on my Vista machines (we have 2 on the network, hard wired through a router usually.. however now they are connected directly to the modem) that have both either lost their internet connection or after many reboots of the modem, connect to a uselessly slow internet connection. I've reset the router, and then gave up alltogether for the direct line to the modem. Comcast came today, couldn't figure it out.. they replaced the modem and claim the internet is fine from their end.
I did install Comcast's Norton Suite 3 weeks ago, which ran fine until now. I slow started having problems, Tivo Desktop couldn't transfer shows, then wifi connected devices like my iphone would ask over and over again for the password to the network. Then my VNC program stopped connecting to my home computer. Then, ultimately the internet connection was lost. All these things happened a few days after each other. Comcast has told me I am on my own, they don't know what else to do. The kicker is that the internet is good and fast if I boot in SAFE MODE. I uninstalled Norton on one of my desktops, but still slow internet.
So, the tech tells me the problem is with Vista, says there must've been an update that went on both computers that is causing the problem. So I have no clue where to go to from there. I unistalled Norton on the one machine using Windows Uninstall to get rid of it. Is part of it there still? It's so weird that both computers have the identical problem, yet its not the internet connection that is causing it.
Vista Compatability With Xp
Apr 18, 2008I am in the process of having a laptop replaced by my insurance, but what
they are offering me is vista. As my old laptop and all back-up files are on
xp format i need to know if vista is at all compatable with xp, and if so, in
what form. Is this going to cause me unneeded hassel or should i insist with
my insurance that i have an xp laptop? Everything that i have heard about
vista so far has been negative to say the least.
Vista And Compatability.
Jan 11, 2010I have had/used other computers using older software on other OS's, and they can run older versions of software. Do the Service Packs change these flaws? I understand downloading updates drivers and patches is important. But the upgrade advisor told me that some programs will not work at all. I'm thinking paritioning drives with different OS's is a good idea right now. But Some programs I have need to be updated anyways. Are there any utilities, or programs available that will run certain versions of certain programs that have a problem running in an OS like Vista? Or another OS?

my computer uses nvidea geforve and it seems that my non-PnP monitor is set to 63hz refresh rate and i think it needs to be 60 for the game to work... how do i fix it? when i go into monitor settings its got a dropdown menu with only 62hz as an option.
Camera Not Compatability

I cant transfer my Sony handy cam DCR-HC44E mini DV tape over the usb cable to the computer, The picture package that comes with the camera has compatability problems with windows vista. Sombody tell me this issue has been resolved as surely its been noticed a long time now, surely its a simple thing for Microsoft to fix, are they just trying to get more money out of me

Sep 7, 2009I am trying to upgrade my Vista system to Windows 7. However, when it checks compatability issues, it tells me I cannot upgrade a 32 bit system to the Win 7 64 bit system. Problem is my Vista system IS 64 bit (AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core @ 3GHz, 4GB RAM, Vista SP2). Oct 12, 2009Using my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista). Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it ransfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky). Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:
Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out..........

Fallout 3 Autorun Never Works
Mar 3, 2009I have had this problem for a long time, but i'm beginning to get really sick and tired of it.
First and foremost, let me quickly explain the issue:
- Autorun NEVER works
- When i insert a disc or USB device, nothing happens
- When i go to My Computer and double click on the drive, Vista asks me if i want to format the CD/DVD
- Vista thinks that every CD/DVD i insert is blank... This includes mounting an ISO via Daemon tools........

Jun 8, 2008Just thought I'd pass along some info I came across after setting up my newest 64 bit machine and connecting an older but definitely not outdated Epson Perfection scanner. I really love this scanner and it's auto-restoration features for older photos, so I was not willing to give it up. I found the following website with instructions for finding the correct drivers. Apparently, Epson built support for x64, but hid the drivers within the installer for 32 bit systems. No search on any version of their support website shows driver downloads under 64 bit. I did what was described in that article, and have my scanner working beautifully on Vista x64. I can say that I downloaded drivers both from the European site as well as the U.S. site. The driver file each installs is no different, but the scan utility is a slightly different version. I went with the U.S. version in the end, it being what looks like a higher version number (3.04a instead of 3.0u... hard to tell if there's any real difference, as there was no language issues or anything).
Sidebar Works, But Unresponsive
Dec 29, 2008I'm running Home Premium x64. The build is only ~1month old and previously the sidebar was working fine. Apparently I've fouled something up. The sidebar loads fine, runs fine, looks fine. Here is the problem; Gadgets like Pro Weather, or Hermes, where the user has the option of opening up a larger screen to the left of the gadget.. those screens are unresponsive.
For example in the weather app, I click the little arrow to expand the gadget, it brings up the larger window with options to view the radar, or nightly forecasts, or moon phases etc, but my clicking ANYWHERE on that screen is unresponsive.. it just doesn't work. I thought maybe it was the weather app, but then noticed the same thing on Hermes. Hermes is a news ticker. When you hover over a story it brings up the full story in a pane to the left, with clickable links for the actual web story. Again, all mouse input in this pane seems to be restricted, and the links do not work.
I don't recall the exact moment when I lost control of this. Over the past few weeks I have installed / uninstalled Norton AV, and used a utility called 'Vista Manager'. Currently I am running no AV. The Vista Manager program is pretty neat actually. I didn't make any kind of drastic changes with it, but thats not to say it isn't someone related. Maybe it stopped a required service or something? Who Knows.

May 30, 2009I have a laptop running windows vista home premium 32bit. I've been having trouble with freezing problems where everything will freeze up except my mouse. I can move the mouse pointer around but i can't click on anything and bringing up the task manager using ctrl-alt-delete or ctrl-shift-escape doesn't work either. I have to do a forced shut down.
This happens at random times. I could be browsing the internet, word processing, listening to music, or anything. It happens both on a clean vista install and regular manufacturer (sony) os. I have all the updated drivers. What could be the problem?
