View 5 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of having a laptop replaced by my insurance, but what
they are offering me is vista. As my old laptop and all back-up files are on
xp format i need to know if vista is at all compatable with xp, and if so, in
what form. Is this going to cause me unneeded hassel or should i insist with
my insurance that i have an xp laptop? Everything that i have heard about
vista so far has been negative to say the least.
I have had/used other computers using older software on other OS's, and they can run older versions of software. Do the Service Packs change these flaws? I understand downloading updates drivers and patches is important. But the upgrade advisor told me that some programs will not work at all. I'm thinking paritioning drives with different OS's is a good idea right now. But Some programs I have need to be updated anyways. Are there any utilities, or programs available that will run certain versions of certain programs that have a problem running in an OS like Vista? Or another OS?

View 4 Replies View RelatedUsing my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista). Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it ransfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky). Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:
Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out..........
i just installed battlefield 2 on vista home premium 32bit i have a dell xps m15300 with 4 gb ram 2.4ghz so its fast enough to run the game..
my computer uses nvidea geforve and it seems that my non-PnP monitor is set to 63hz refresh rate and i think it needs to be 60 for the game to work... how do i fix it? when i go into monitor settings its got a dropdown menu with only 62hz as an option.
This has probably been brought up here before, but iv just spent the last 5 hours trawling throught the net looking for fixes for this problem, I cant remember half of thiings iv tried now, the problem is this. I cant transfer my Sony handy cam DCR-HC44E mini DV tape over the usb cable to the computer, The picture package that comes with the camera has compatability problems with windows vista. Sombody tell me this issue has been resolved as surely its been noticed a long time now, surely its a simple thing for Microsoft to fix, are they just trying to get more money out of me
View 6 Replies View RelatedLast week, I was unable to install Microsoft updates. They failed every time. I overcame this by doing a system restore to an earlier date before the previous updates. They then installed. However I was left with Microsoft Net framework 3.5 Service pack 1 which failed to install. I went to Microsoft download site and downloaded from there. The my troubles started, in that now on opening my machine it tries to configure these updates and says on screen "configuring 3 of 3" gets to 87% then closes automatically and restarts the process overagain. I tried to open in "safemode" but exactly the same thing happens. Is there anything I can do to stop this, or am I forced in to doing a restore to factory settings, or I note that I have another option of "last known good configuration (advanced)". As I am not advanced this causes me concern.

I was told that this software would work on Vista in compatibility mode before I bought it for my kids.
I am trying to upgrade my Vista system to Windows 7. However, when it checks compatability issues, it tells me I cannot upgrade a 32 bit system to the Win 7 64 bit system. Problem is my Vista system IS 64 bit (AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core @ 3GHz, 4GB RAM, Vista SP2). Anyone know why this is happening, and if there is anything I can do to correct this problem, or do I just return the Win7 package?
View 9 Replies View RelatedVista Home premium, SP2. HP Pavilion Notebook. Have to run in -SAFE mode with networking- for next week till new hard drive arrives.
I will then install it as my computer will not boot in normal mode. HP Warranty is replacing hard drive.
But as an aside, I can access my hard drive and copy files to my external HDD.
In the meantime, I wish to use the Internet to access audio via HULU or other sites.
How can I manually access my audio while in safe mode?
I have hp laptop with Vista Home Premium (OEM) installed. I've made Recovery Disks using the Recover Manager. I wish to have a clean install of Vista instead of using the Recovery Disks. I've read previous threads but I have to say I am only getting more confused.
- Can I perform clean install of my Vista OEM?
- Can I use any copy of Vista OEM cd and use the Product Key sticked behind my laptop?.........
I would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have beed having problems with stability with my vista x64 system. After crashing several times from video driver problems (Nvidia 9800GT) Vista won't boot in any mode safe, restore to last known, etc. I put in the original disk I purchased and I get Status: 0xc0000225 Info: An unexpected error has occured. I can not even get to the repair screen or even put on a clean install. The x32 disc will boot but has no x64 repair tools. What do I do?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have acquired my Vista license in a rather peculiar mode, I will describe it so bear with me (there's a question at the end): I had been looking for a Vista license for a while but most IT shops didn't have any types on stock until I reached three webshops which were offering Vista Home Premium (both x32 and x64, the type that I now run). All of them were advertised on site only with the simple name at a price around 100 and something USD (about 130 I would guess with currency conversion).
I called all three asking for an update quote mentioning my interest in a purchase. Two called me back confirming the price but saying the license there was OEM, therefore it can't be sold like that, only with a system purchased from them, either on the spot or purchased from them less than three months ago. I had no idea what OEM means at the time. The third one however accepted my order and shipped a Vista package, which contained a brief OEM manual, a sticker and the original DVD (with all those cute colorful Microsoft holograms). Of course the package was legit, I put the sticker on my PC, installed it, passed genuine validation & everything. But I still wonder, since this package is obviously OEM and I didn't get my computer from that company anyway, is there a chance I could get in trouble for that? OR maybe the company who sold me the license will get in trouble?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just built a Vista Ultimate x64 box, after a lot of effort I finally have most of my old Win2K Pro applications workings except for Real VNC. I have three machines in the work group, unfortunately one is Win2K Pro, XP Home and now the Vista x64. I think due to the Vista firewall or something else it will NOT let other machines access the Vista box, but I can access the other machines just fine from the Vista box. The work group seems to work fine. I am able to see/edit files on each computer Hdd.
The main problem as I have narrowed it down to, is that Vista box does NOT start in the VNC Server (service) mode. And I dont know how to get it to start. When I goto Start>Real VNC>Start VNC Server Service. It says the service is already running but I don't see the icon with the IP address in the task bar.
I have Vista Home Premium 32bit. Vista became corrupted to the point where I was not even able to start in safe mode. I managed to make a set of backup dvds through the HP backup system just before the computer completely died. Vista Home Premium does not recognize these backup dvds, even though it does show that there are files on each of the dvds. Is there any way to retrieve the information on them?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have our wireless router hooked up to my computer at home. When I shut down my computer, the router stays up and working fine, allowing our wireless laptops access to the internet. The ethernet light stays lit and everything is fine. However, when I put my computer in sleep mode - something I would prefer to do rather than shutting it down when I'm not using it - the ethernet light goes out and the laptops can't connect to the internet. It even says no network connection is available. Does anyone know if there is something I can do? Change a setting in Vista or in the system BIOS ? Is it something to do with the router? The router is pretty old - Actiontec (GT704WG) but we've never had any problems with it. View 5 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
Is there any way to turn off "Test Mode" in Vista x64 Ultimate? Once upon a time I disabled driver signing through bcdedit /set nointegritychecks ON or bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS (don't remember anymore). Now I would like to enable it back on, but can't. bcdedit -deletevalue loadoption or bcdedit /set nointegritychecks OFF/NO didn't work. Also atempt to remove only the "test mode" watermark by overwriting user32dll.mui also didn't work. I managed to overwrite the file with changed files in bots system32 and syswow64, but nothing changed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Ultimate upgrade. I'm currently running Win 2000. Obviously I can't install Vista 64 bit from this OS so I'm following the instructions here which says you can boot from CD to install Vista 64 however the previous operating system must not be removed prior to install. In my system Win 2k is on a different hard drive than the one I'm installing to. When I start the install process, on the screen where you select the custom option, it says that upgrade is disabled. I assume this means it did not detect my previous OS? I can install my Win 2k on the hard drive where I wish to install Vista. In the past however, when I had the previous OS on the C: drive and I installed
Vista on the same drive Vista would end up on the next available drive letter (i.e. E. Nothing really wrong with this but it's kind of awkward and can't be changed later.
