Shut Down, Sleep, Hibernate: Which Is Recommended?

Jun 10, 2008

My Vista 32bit is used at home for a few hours daily. A comment in another group stated shutting down / starting back up is harder on the system over the years. True? Is there any difference between the button left of the lock symbol ('Saves session & puts comp. in low power state' and sleep? When I'm done for the day which is recommended by those who know?

Lost The Sleep And Hibernate

May 19, 2009

I have an HP Pavilion and cannot get the machine to power down into Sleep Mode or Hibernation. When I first bought this PC the middle of last year I remember reading after my first Windows Update that the feature might be lost as a result of the Windows Updating process. However, as the months have gone by and more and more apps having been installed and loaded on to this machine, it now takes longer for it to boot up. I always liked the Hibernate feature on my old Windows XP machine, but since I lost the Sleep and Hibernation features on this machine and realized why they were gone shortly after having purchased it.

I just went ahead with complete shut downs and cold boots. At this point though I'm pretty tired of the extended waits for the machine to boot up all the time so I would like to know if it's possible, and if so, how, I might get the Sleep or Hibernate features back on this machine. I wasn’t sure what other Section to post this message in since I don’t see an applicable Heading, so I went with the General Folder.

Closing The Lid Does Not Enter Hibernate Or Sleep Mode

Mar 23, 2008

I've bought Dell XPS M 1530 recently. Earlier with bios version A_05 my notebook didnot detect wireless network if it became available while the computer was already On. The computer had to be waking up or restarting in the presence of network and then only it registered it. The Dell technician downloaded the latest bios (version A_07) and the wireless network problem got corrected. But the new problem thats comeup now is that closing the lid doesnt put the computer to sleep. I checked in the power options, thats correctly configured. Even changed it to hibernate when i close lid. That doesnt work either. One more thing i must add - that it's not like my computer doesnt get to know at all that the lid is closed. When i open the lid, everything is ON but the mouse arrow behaves 'drunk' for a while before becoming normal.

Doesn't Sleep/hibernate When Music Playing

Jun 2, 2008

I'm using Vista as carpc operating system. My problem is that Vista doesn't sleep/hibernate when music is playing. I have set pc to hibernate after one minute when powerchord is not plugged. That is what it is suppose to do. Now my Vista thinks that "I'm playing music, so I don't go to hibernate-mode". Few guys have said that it should hibernate even if playing music, few guys says that computer shouldn't hibernate cause it's in use. Is there way to make computer hibernate when music/videos is on?

Wanting to make a shortcut for a hot-button on my keyboard to create "sleep" mode -- that is, awake computer from keyboard of mouse movement, and am baffled. Must admit the hibernate mode is good for ending a days work, but often I wish to manually induce 'Sleep'.

Windows Hibernate Sleep Wake Up Can't Working Properly

Feb 17, 2009

I pressed the circle button with the vertical lline in Vista (from pressing Start) This sent the computer to sleep or hibanate I dont know which. I cannot get the computer to come back on. The monitor remains black (no picture) and says no signal. I have deprived the computer of power. This was achieved by unplugging it from the wall, and removing the power cable also from the computer.

I have tried restarting the computer but to no avail. I have also removed the keyboard and mouse when I try starting up. I have also tried, holding in the power button and then restarting. No matter what I try still no joy. No signal on the monitor. The lights in all cases come on, on the base unit and I can hear fans spinning etc. I have read about this issue in round about ways but all of the fixes seem to rely on actually being in windows.

No Shut Down After Sleep

Mar 28, 2009

I have a problem with the sleep mode. When I use my computer and when I shut it down, everything works fine, the computer turns off completely. When I use my computer and when I set it to sleep mode, everything works fine, the computer turns off , the fans aren't turning, the PC becomes silent. Pressing a key on the keyboard, or moving the mouse, will switch the computer on again, the wake up from sleep mode works OK.

The problem is when I want to shutdown after a wake up from sleep: the computer seems to go to sleep mode in a normal way, the monitor turns black, but then, the PC's case is still noisy, and the fans are still turning. In fact, it's like Windows has turned off, but not the PC. The only way I can turn it off completely is to keep the power button pressed for about 5 seconds. I'm sure the problem isn't here since the begining. I beleive this problems happens since I installed the Service Pack 1 of Vista.

Windows Restarts When It Is Suppose To Shut Down/Sleep

Apr 7, 2010

I've read about this problem in several other post but no solutions that have worked for me.

My problem is that whenever I close my lid, allow my computer to go to sleep/hibernate, or even go to start->shut down, my computer restarts.

This past weekend I had my computer reformatted, thinking this would solve the problem, but the problem still persists.

The only way I can make my computer turn off is to hold down the power button for several seconds.

I have minimum computer knowledge, but I have been trying step by step solutions listed on other forums.
I've been through all of the power management steps and have all of my settings on the suggested settings for this problem.
I've deactivated almost all applications from opening on start up.
I've checked USB, LAN settings and I believe those are not the problem.
Still kind of unfamiliar with BIOS

When running the command powercfg -a, this is what comes up
C:Windowssystem32>powercfg -a
The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby ( S3 ) Hibernat
e Hybrid Sleep
The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Clicked "Hibernate" Instead Of "Shut Down"

May 15, 2010

I have a compaq presario c770US laptop with Windows Vista Premium Home Edition with service pack 1.2GB ram 32 bit Intel Dual Core I've had it since Mid 2008. Last night I accidentally clicked "Hibernate" instead of "Shut Down" as I intended. It was late, so I turned off my laptop by holding the power button. I went to sleep, and when I woke up, I was not able to login into my administrator account. I'm on a guest account right now. There are no issues, except for the of course limited access to files (Including some homework I need to turn in). The computer boots fine, but when I put my password in for my admin account, all I see is welcome, and the loading circle just keeps spinning.I tried this a few times, and I then decided to give it some time to login. I went to get my haircut over a period of an hour with the hope that it would login, but I was unsuccessful. I've been searching a few threads, and looked at a few ideas, but so far I haven't been able to do anything that requires an administrator. I put in the correct password, and it either takes time to do nothing, or it completely freezes up.

I don't know if this will help but one thread said for me to type "net user administrator /active" in the command prompt, but I got an error message saying "System error 5 has occured. Access denied." I have also tried to scan using the command prompt, but have been unsuccessful. A few months ago I did have a short period (One day) where I was having trouble logging into the guest account I have. The reply was "Cannot login into account," but I was still able to login into my admin account. It subsided without any further action though.

Is OEM Recommended ?

Jul 5, 2008

I'd like to upgrade PCs from my family to Vista (2 PC).

I also have to precise I regularly change PCs configuration : ex. I rebuilt completly one of the PC to put a big graphic card (for Games): the mother board and connectic were so old I had to change almost everything (box, mother board, new wireless PCI card.) The only things that didn't changed were the screen, the keyboard and the mouse.

Knowing this, what do you recommend : Vista OEM or the DVD pack?

And to be complete, is there somewhere reliable information with differences and possiblities of all Vista version (number of installation, what can be changed, what can't be changed in PC in order to reinstal, etc.)

AVG 9.0 Not Recommended

Mar 13, 2010

In the past I had no problem recommending AVG Free 8.5, however I cannot recommend the version 9.0 because of apparant problems. A couple of days ago I downloaded AVG Free 9.0, uninstalled v8.5, installed v9.0 and went thru the settings; most were left as default. This AM while on the internet, the AVG scan started, that is when the problems started. I attempted to go from Yahoo home page to Yahoo mail. I was unable to redirect and IE8 showed (Not Responding) but yet system tray internet connection showed as still being connected.

I of course did the diagnose internet connection, it would not return a result so I ended both it and IE. I then attempted to open the user interface from the system tray, unable to do so. Attempted to stop process but it was not evan showing up in Applications. About the only thing I could do was restart the computer and do the uninstall upon load up.

Did not reinstall v8.5 because daughters computer while this was going on, was asking for a restart from AVG automatically downloading and installing v9.0. It would appear for whatever reason while performing the scan, it takes control of the computer instead of in the past allowing you to set priority, unless there is a setting that needs to be changed.

- all drivers since 2.0.0.125 result in very slow performance (~ 30 kbps)
- virtually every day the adapter stops working. Usually the LED is off & no error is logged, but device needs to be replugged to reactivate. Occasionally a reboot is needed.................

VSync Recommended Enabled Or Disabled

Dec 6, 2008

I think the title says it all - I mostly play games on my system and I would like to know what this function really is and what performance impact it has when enabled (besides frame cap). I noticed that when it is disabled scene on the screen sometimes gets 'desynchronized' (i.e. upper half of the scene is like somewhat 'nudged' compared to the lower half), especially when the player moves fast or camera makes rapid movements (reckon that is why it is also called 'vertical synchronization'). So the question is - should it be enabled or disabled ?

Recommended Simple Folder And Files Backup

Apr 11, 2008

I currently have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with window XP Pro installed. For specific folders and files, I use the AKGBackup Program and it has worked well for me, especially since it is so easy to use and I can access any backed up folder or file with just windows explorer. I don't need a lot of features. In the very near future, I plan to purchase a new Dell computer with Vista Business Edition. any simple folder/file backup programs (Vista compatible) that is similar to the AKGBackup program. I should note that the AKGBackup program web site does not indicate if it works with Vista (the last time I checked). I should also note that I have researched a bit about windows Live OneCare and it appears to be somewhat lacking. Imaging, I currently use the Symantec Livestate Recovery Desktop Edition for my current computer and plan to purchase the ShadowProtect Desktop Edition for my new computer.
