Doesn't Sleep/hibernate When Music Playing
Jun 2, 2008
I'm using Vista as carpc operating system. My problem is that Vista doesn't sleep/hibernate when music is playing. I have set pc to hibernate after one minute when powerchord is not plugged. That is what it is suppose to do. Now my Vista thinks that "I'm playing music, so I don't go to hibernate-mode". Few guys have said that it should hibernate even if playing music, few guys says that computer shouldn't hibernate cause it's in use. Is there way to make computer hibernate when music/videos is on?

My stepdaughters computer skips sound and locks up when playing loud Rock music. When playing other types of music it is fine. I changed her audio drivers from Microsoft to Dell drivers and that fixed most music but it still happens when playing Rock music. The hardware diagnostics says the device is working properly. She has Vista Home Premium with SP2.

I have an HP Pavilion and cannot get the machine to power down into Sleep Mode or Hibernation. When I first bought this PC the middle of last year I remember reading after my first Windows Update that the feature might be lost as a result of the Windows Updating process. However, as the months have gone by and more and more apps having been installed and loaded on to this machine, it now takes longer for it to boot up. I always liked the Hibernate feature on my old Windows XP machine, but since I lost the Sleep and Hibernation features on this machine and realized why they were gone shortly after having purchased it.
I just went ahead with complete shut downs and cold boots. At this point though I'm pretty tired of the extended waits for the machine to boot up all the time so I would like to know if it's possible, and if so, how, I might get the Sleep or Hibernate features back on this machine. I wasn’t sure what other Section to post this message in since I don’t see an applicable Heading, so I went with the General Folder.

On the demise of my old computer, I've bought a shiny new one, complete with Windows Vista. I've had it four days, and so far it's only crashed twice. Is this... normal? The other thing it does is randomly stop for 15-20 seconds, and then start working again, as if nothing has happened.
I've not even been doing anything particularly strenuous; just browsing the internet and playing music, when suddenly the music stops, and the computer does nothing for 20 seconds, and then it's back. Anyone know what the problem might be with this, and if there's anything I can do about it?

My Vista 32bit is used at home for a few hours daily. A comment in another group stated shutting down / starting back up is harder on the system over the years. True? Is there any difference between the button left of the lock symbol ('Saves session & puts comp. in low power state' and sleep? When I'm done for the day which is recommended by those who know?

I've bought Dell XPS M 1530 recently. Earlier with bios version A_05 my notebook didnot detect wireless network if it became available while the computer was already On. The computer had to be waking up or restarting in the presence of network and then only it registered it. The Dell technician downloaded the latest bios (version A_07) and the wireless network problem got corrected. But the new problem thats comeup now is that closing the lid doesnt put the computer to sleep. I checked in the power options, thats correctly configured. Even changed it to hibernate when i close lid. That doesnt work either. One more thing i must add - that it's not like my computer doesnt get to know at all that the lid is closed. When i open the lid, everything is ON but the mouse arrow behaves 'drunk' for a while before becoming normal.

rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep, Creating a shortcut of this above mentioned routine causes a hibernate mode, similar or exactly same as rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState
Wanting to make a shortcut for a hot-button on my keyboard to create "sleep" mode -- that is, awake computer from keyboard of mouse movement, and am baffled. Must admit the hibernate mode is good for ending a days work, but often I wish to manually induce 'Sleep'.

I'm having problems with Aero themes in 32 bit colors after computer resume from sleep/hibernate. Screen is messed up (see screenshot at [url]). I have NVidia GForce 6200 chipset card, and now I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, but I had the same problem in Vista x64. If I move to 16 bit colors it solves, also with basic theme without Aero. I tried many drivers updates but nothing changed.

I pressed the circle button with the vertical lline in Vista (from pressing Start) This sent the computer to sleep or hibanate I dont know which. I cannot get the computer to come back on. The monitor remains black (no picture) and says no signal. I have deprived the computer of power. This was achieved by unplugging it from the wall, and removing the power cable also from the computer.
I have tried restarting the computer but to no avail. I have also removed the keyboard and mouse when I try starting up. I have also tried, holding in the power button and then restarting. No matter what I try still no joy. No signal on the monitor. The lights in all cases come on, on the base unit and I can hear fans spinning etc. I have read about this issue in round about ways but all of the fixes seem to rely on actually being in windows.

I am moving my Documents , Pictures, and Music folders associated with the start menu on the right side of start menu (under the user pix) to a seperate partition on the hard drive so that it will be easier to back up these files monthly, and also allow me to create an image disk of the os without all the data files being included. Going very smoothly except that I stupidly deleted the music folder after I had moved the files, and now when I click the music tab on the start menu, it no longer directs to where the music files have been moved. The Pictures and Documents tabs work correctly...that is, when I click those tabs on the start menu, I am taken to their new location just fine.
My question is, is there some way to re-create that original Music folder which , when I right-click properties, has the tab for LOCATION which will then allow me to change its location settings so that the Music tab on the start menu can find it ? Seems to be a special type of folder, and if I just create a new one, it does not include the Location tab under properties. I should add that I can create a shortcut and pin it to the start menu, but if possible, I'd like to use the original Music tab on the right side of start menu.

In Outlook Express I could do the following to extract music from an Email but it doesn't work in Windows Mail: Click Tools>Options>Send, Change settings to Plain Text for sending, Click Apply, then OK, then highlight the message and click Forward and the attached music file should appear just below the Subject line where you can then click File/Save Attachment.

I've found a few issues regarding sleep mode, but none that seemed to directly address my problem, so here goes: In the last two weeks or so, I've noticed that when I close my laptop's lid, the computer doesn't go into sleep mode, but instead hangs with a blank screen, and is completely unresponsive when I try to wake it up. The only way to fix it is to hold the power button to get it to shut off. However, this only seems to happen when my wireless network card (internal) is switched OFF. Even then, it doesn't happen all the time (i.e. sometimes it successfully goes to sleep, and wakes up again when I open the lid). It hasn't been a problem at all when the network card is on.
This started happening in late April, when two things happened (and they both happened at about the same time). First was that Windows Update automatically downloaded and installed a hotfix (946776) related to the computer crashing when the network status is changing. For what it's worth, I had never experienced the problem that the hotfix was supposed to correct. The other thing that happened was that I uninstalled McAfee and installed ZoneAlarm antivirus and firewall. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem 100% of the time, so I haven't figured out what sequence of programs running causes the problem (though it seems that iTunes and/or Windows Media Player is usually running when it happens). The first thing I tried was to use system restore and went back to before I installed zonealarm and the update. When I reinstalled ZA, Windows Update decided it was going to hurry up and download the hotfix before I had a chance to tell it not to. I uninstalled the hotfix (though it still shows up on the update history page, but not the list of installed updates), and the problem still occurred.......

Because my computer goes to sleep but will not wake (I talked about this before -- don't want to go over that again -- nothing works), I've been leaving it on all the time. I don't trust hypernation, since the sleep mode doesn't work properly. This problem may be caused by surges/glitches occuring via the cable modem (altho I really don't know what is causing it). This morning I worked on it for bout 1/2 a hour (it was working fine) but I came back a couple hours later to a frozen comp that I had to force boot via the surge protector (could not turn it off any other way). Luckily, I have Acronis backup which has saved this machine two times now within 4 months. I was able to boot using the Acronis rescue disk and restored a backup. is there any reason why I should not shut down everynite or when I am away from the machine for any length of time? I know shutdown is not recommended because Vista does things on its own like update programs such as Defender and Norton ISecurity (I turned off the auto d/l and install feature in windows -- I want to see what it plans to d/l and install, etc.) but I can do all the updates manually.

MSN Music To Delete DRM Keys - Say Goodbye To Your Music "Customers who have purchased music from Microsoft's now-defunct MSN Music store are now facing a decision they never anticipated making: commit to which computers (and OS) they want to authorize forever, or give up access to the music they paid for. Why? Because Microsoft has decided that it's done supporting the service and will be turning off the MSN Music license servers by the end of this summer." http://tinyurl.com/3uwfo8. just another "screw you" from Microsoft

My vista home premium seems to have a problem with its music media replay. When I open a song file, the music id fine but the vocals sound distant, inaudible and a large amount of echo. I did download an mp3 player called morpher or something very similar but deleted after playing two songs, has this damaged my music files or my computer? I am unsure if the mp3 player is the culprit but all was fine beforehand.
I have updated the realtek driver but has made no difference to the vocal reproduction. I have also tried a system restore to a date well before the mp3 player was put onto the computer, it still made no difference.

Vista Home Premium SP1 (and WinXP Home SP3). After Best Buy "optimized" my new Toshiba laptop, the Hibernate option was nowhere to be found. Then, after going through World War III, erasing the disk, and re-installing Vista to factory-fresh standards, it was there. This time it even stuck around after Best Buy did their thing again. I decided to ask some questions. It seemed that if I didn't like one answer, all I had to do to get a second (and guaranteed different) opinion was to ask a different employee. I thought I liked Hibernate under XP. I was leery of Standby, probably because of my mainframe days when memory was *really* temporary. I had no trouble with Hibernate, and it was a faster restart than Shut Down. Now I'm told to use Sleep (the old Standby) because Hibernate is fraught with problems. Not only that, but I was told that Hibernate wasn't removed by Best Buy, but by Windows Update! Actually, if I could feel comfortable with
Sleep, I like the idea of, say, dozing off after 10 minutes of inactivity, but waking up instantly when necessary, combined with invoking a Shut Down (or Hibernate) only when I close the lid. I look forward to getting a variety of opinions here.

I installed Vista Ultimate x64 in March and had had no system problems until last week. Last week I put my PC into hibernate as I always do. When I came back to my machine it would not come out of hibernate and I had to do a hard reset. From this point onwards it would spontaneously freeze (normally after about 10 minutes of normal use) where a hard reset would be required.
The only change in my system configuration at this point was a game update for Call Of Duty 4. However I used the same installer on 2 other Vista 64 machines (home editions) with identical specs (ones I built for my folks (both keen gamers )) and had no problems.
What I have tried so far:...........
