Hibernate / Sleep Restarts
Mar 23, 2008This is the second time in the past year I had to do this and I cant remember what I did to fix it. When I click the "round circle" hibernate button it shuts down and the restarts again?

Restarts Instead Of Goib To Sleep 50% Of The Time.
May 17, 2009If i 1. close the lid or 2. go to the so called "start" menu and hit sleep, about half the time I listen and hear that my laptop has restarted itself. If i keep the lid open and watch, it clearly restarts, and sometimes it brings me to that screen that says, windows has not started properly and it gives me the option to run normally or change to safe mode. i can run normally and everything is fine. Do not tell me to go to power options because VISTA FAILS is not an option and my power options are just fine and do not have to do with this. I would like an intelligent answer.

May 19, 2009I have an HP Pavilion and cannot get the machine to power down into Sleep Mode or Hibernation. When I first bought this PC the middle of last year I remember reading after my first Windows Update that the feature might be lost as a result of the Windows Updating process. However, as the months have gone by and more and more apps having been installed and loaded on to this machine, it now takes longer for it to boot up. I always liked the Hibernate feature on my old Windows XP machine, but since I lost the Sleep and Hibernation features on this machine and realized why they were gone shortly after having purchased it.
I just went ahead with complete shut downs and cold boots. At this point though I'm pretty tired of the extended waits for the machine to boot up all the time so I would like to know if it's possible, and if so, how, I might get the Sleep or Hibernate features back on this machine. I wasn’t sure what other Section to post this message in since I don’t see an applicable Heading, so I went with the General Folder.
Windows Restarts When It Is Suppose To Shut Down/Sleep
Apr 7, 2010I've read about this problem in several other post but no solutions that have worked for me.
My problem is that whenever I close my lid, allow my computer to go to sleep/hibernate, or even go to start->shut down, my computer restarts.
This past weekend I had my computer reformatted, thinking this would solve the problem, but the problem still persists.
The only way I can make my computer turn off is to hold down the power button for several seconds.
I have minimum computer knowledge, but I have been trying step by step solutions listed on other forums.
I've been through all of the power management steps and have all of my settings on the suggested settings for this problem.
I've deactivated almost all applications from opening on start up.
I've checked USB, LAN settings and I believe those are not the problem.
Still kind of unfamiliar with BIOS
When running the command powercfg -a, this is what comes up

Jun 10, 2008My Vista 32bit is used at home for a few hours daily. A comment in another group stated shutting down / starting back up is harder on the system over the years. True? Is there any difference between the button left of the lock symbol ('Saves session & puts comp. in low power state' and sleep? When I'm done for the day which is recommended by those who know?

Mar 23, 2008I've bought Dell XPS M 1530 recently. Earlier with bios version A_05 my notebook didnot detect wireless network if it became available while the computer was already On. The computer had to be waking up or restarting in the presence of network and then only it registered it. The Dell technician downloaded the latest bios (version A_07) and the wireless network problem got corrected. But the new problem thats comeup now is that closing the lid doesnt put the computer to sleep. I checked in the power options, thats correctly configured. Even changed it to hibernate when i close lid. That doesnt work either. One more thing i must add - that it's not like my computer doesnt get to know at all that the lid is closed. When i open the lid, everything is ON but the mouse arrow behaves 'drunk' for a while before becoming normal.

Jun 2, 2008I'm using Vista as carpc operating system. My problem is that Vista doesn't sleep/hibernate when music is playing. I have set pc to hibernate after one minute when powerchord is not plugged. That is what it is suppose to do. Now my Vista thinks that "I'm playing music, so I don't go to hibernate-mode". Few guys have said that it should hibernate even if playing music, few guys says that computer shouldn't hibernate cause it's in use. Is there way to make computer hibernate when music/videos is on?

Aero Themes After Computer Resume Sleep/hibernate
Feb 22, 2010I'm having problems with Aero themes in 32 bit colors after computer resume from sleep/hibernate. Screen is messed up (see screenshot at [url]). I have NVidia GForce 6200 chipset card, and now I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, but I had the same problem in Vista x64. If I move to 16 bit colors it solves,also with basic theme without Aero. I tried many drivers updates but nothing changed.

Feb 17, 2009I pressed the circle button with the vertical lline in Vista (from pressing Start) This sent the computer to sleep or hibanate I dont know which. I cannot get the computer to come back on. The monitor remains black (no picture) and says no signal. I have deprived the computer of power. This was achieved by unplugging it from the wall, and removing the power cable also from the computer.
I have tried restarting the computer but to no avail. I have also removed the keyboard and mouse when I try starting up. I have also tried, holding in the power button and then restarting. No matter what I try still no joy. No signal on the monitor. The lights in all cases come on, on the base unit and I can hear fans spinning etc. I have read about this issue in round about ways but all of the fixes seem to rely on actually being in windows.

Nov 16, 2008My friend has a VISTA Medion laptop (I dont have full details to hand but will get this and post latter). It has a problem that has just started to happen over the last two months or so (so they say). It started off that after starting the laptop for the first time after about 5-10 mins it would crash and go to a black screen with a few blue boxes on, the only way to get it back would be to hold the power button till it came on. I had a look at it and updated video drivers, windows and checked for viruses and malware. All of this seemed to do was move the problem to just going to a black screen (like hibernation) but i could not get it out of it unless again using the power button. I have now changed all power settings in basic and advance to off or various different versions of some off some on different times all to no avail. I have also disabled everything other than MS from startup. However this has now resulted in the laptop restarting itself again after 5-10 mins. Again it is only from a cold boot, once it has restarted once it is fine till the laptop is turned off.
Having read a few post i have since updated all the drivers i could think of including sound and network drivers. I have updated the BIOS all with very little change. The current state is that it still restarts but again only off a cold boot but now just before it does the screen goes blank and the mouse cursor gets bigger.So; I have already updated all drivers & the BIOS I have tried power settings including making sure hibernation is active and deactivate. I have disabled startup progs in MSCONFIG I have Virus and malware scanned I do not think it could be overheating as it only happens when the laptop is turned on for the first time and so has not had time to overheat and it would do it more often and not after only 5-10 mins. I have thought it could be the RAM but before spending money on new RAM i wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas. Does anyone know what the main difference is in the boot sequence when it does a cold boot? I forgot to mention the only thing my friend can think changed around about the same time as the problem started is that she started to use the wirless on the laptop.
To Hibernate Or Not To Hibernate?
Jun 7, 2009Vista Home Premium SP1 (and WinXP Home SP3). After Best Buy "optimized" my new Toshiba laptop, the Hibernate option was nowhere to be found. Then, after going through World War III, erasing the disk, and re-installing Vista to factory-fresh standards, it was there. This time it even stuck around after Best Buy did their thing again. I decided to ask some questions. It seemed that if I didn't like one answer, all I had to do to get a second (and guaranteed different) opinion was to ask a different employee. I thought I liked Hibernate under XP. I was leery of Standby, probably because of my mainframe days when memory was *really* temporary. I had no trouble with Hibernate, and it was a faster restart than Shut Down. Now I'm told to use Sleep (the old Standby) because Hibernate is fraught with problems. Not only that, but I was told that Hibernate wasn't removed by Best Buy, but by Windows Update! Actually, if I could feel comfortable with
Sleep, I like the idea of, say, dozing off after 10 minutes of inactivity, but waking up instantly when necessary, combined with invoking a Shut Down (or Hibernate) only when I close the lid. I look forward to getting a variety of opinions here.
Not Come Out Of Hibernate
Dec 16, 2007I installed Vista Ultimate x64 in March and had had no system problems until last week. Last week I put my PC into hibernate as I always do. When I came back to my machine it would not come out of hibernate and I had to do a hard reset. From this point onwards it would spontaneously freeze (normally after about 10 minutes of normal use) where a hard reset would be required.
The only change in my system configuration at this point was a game update for Call Of Duty 4. However I used the same installer on 2 other Vista 64 machines (home editions) with identical specs (ones I built for my folks (both keen gamers )) and had no problems.

3.00 Ghz Intel core 2 Duo
ATI Radeon HD3870X2
4gb DDR3 Ram
500gb Hard driver
Asus P5E3 Mobo
650W Power Supply
Windows Vista 64 bit
The while playing games such as Call of Duty 4 and World in Conflict I can play for about 5 mins to 30 mins then my computer would randomly shut off and restart.
The weird thing is that it plays fine in other games like Crysis on
high graphisc and I can play for hours and have no problems.
The CPU tempearature is about 50-60C while playing and the GPU is about
70-80.
Computer Shuts Down With No Warning, Then Restarts
May 24, 2008I am using Vista Ultimate and am on a fairly new computer, does anyone know what is causing this? I've ruled out overheating and energy problems. I set windows to not automatically restart and give me a blue screen on crashing, but it still shuts down and restarts with no warning. Is this a hardware issue? It's done this since I've gotten the computer but it seems to be getting worse now.
