My stepdaughters computer skips sound and locks up when playing loud Rock music. When playing other types of music it is fine. I changed her audio drivers from Microsoft to Dell drivers and that fixed most music but it still happens when playing Rock music. The hardware diagnostics says the device is working properly. She has Vista Home Premium with SP2.
View 4 RepliesOn the demise of my old computer, I've bought a shiny new one, complete with Windows Vista. I've had it four days, and so far it's only crashed twice. Is this... normal? The other thing it does is randomly stop for 15-20 seconds, and then start working again, as if nothing has happened.
I've not even been doing anything particularly strenuous; just browsing the internet and playing music, when suddenly the music stops, and the computer does nothing for 20 seconds, and then it's back. Anyone know what the problem might be with this, and if there's anything I can do about it?
I'm using Vista as carpc operating system. My problem is that Vista doesn't sleep/hibernate when music is playing. I have set pc to hibernate after one minute when powerchord is not plugged. That is what it is suppose to do. Now my Vista thinks that "I'm playing music, so I don't go to hibernate-mode". Few guys have said that it should hibernate even if playing music, few guys says that computer shouldn't hibernate cause it's in use. Is there way to make computer hibernate when music/videos is on?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Core 2 2.0G Duo Processor, 2 Gig of ram and a 256MB ATI Mobility X1400 video card. I am running Windows Vista. Whenever I play a Divx movie with WMP it skips. Sometimes the sound plays good but the picture becomes slows down. After about 30 sec? min, the picture takes off and catches up to the sound. I have tried other players and I get the same results. The only one that seems to work is VLC player. I talked to a fella in a computer shop today and he suggested more ram. Is 2 gig of ram not enough, or should I have more? I have another computer that is also an Inspiron 6400 with the exact same hardware but it has XP on it. It does not have any problems with it. Is this a vista problem or do I need to upgrade it already?

Both before and after installation of the service pack I have been getting occasional complete lockups, with the mouse, and keyboard both inactive and the disk access light off. The only way out is the power button. The system is about six months old, has no malware on it, has the latest BIOS installed and passes memtest. I have turned off folder indexing, updated all drivers from the manufacturer and, except for this issue, the system runs well and fast.
The lockups might occur once every couple of weeks --- usually, but not always, when surfing. I have not been able to reproduce the problem and it does appear to be truly random. Does anyone have any ideas what I might try next. The only other thing that happens is that when press the slash key I get his character:? or this one in upper case:? My keyboard is set to English.

When I open a song file, the music id fine but the vocals sound distant, inaudible and a large amount of echo. I did download an mp3 player called morpher or something very similar but deleted after playing two songs, has this damaged my music files or my computer? I am unsure if the mp3 player is the culprit but all was fine beforehand.
I have updated the realtek driver but has made no difference to the vocal reproduction. I have also tried a system restore to a date well before the mp3 player was put onto the computer, it still made no difference.
Well I built my first pc in about three years, and I have an issue with random lockups. Did the ram thing where I did one stick at a time and lockups still took place. Removed Souncard and used onboard still locks up. CPU Temps are good (Using Ultra 120)..........
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been using windows vista 64-bit for a couple weeks now and, though I do find it fast and reliable, am having a huge problem -- the freaking OS seems to like locking up when it works with files of a big size (usually a few hundred MBs). It does not happen always, but pretty often -- to the point where now I save everything I have open before moving any file from a hard drive to the other or simply overwriting it. Its pretty annoying, it happens mainly with big files -- but has also happened a couple times with smaller ones, and I've noticed the pattern already - since every time it locks up like that the system is also doing some work in the hard drive. when it happens, all I can do i restart -
since the system dies completely, no mouse, no sound, no answer of any kind to anything I do but restarting and, once I do so, the system shows no signs of any error, so I can't diagnose whats happening in any way. Any ideas what might be happening? This is a high end system, so its not a lack of resources (amd 64bit dual core athlon 6000+, MSI K9A motherboard, video card is HIS RADEON HD 2900XT and hard drive is western digital 500GB, partitioned in two halves), and is honestly driving me crazy. Also sometimes it starts doing it at random, the system starts and about 2 minutes later it locks up with no reason -- and keeps on doing so several times..................

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been having issues with COD4 locking up. It locks up randomly. I've proved it's not an overheating issue by playing Crysis on full graphics in a high resolution for two hours. So it's definitely not a heat issue. Joe has informed me that driver lock ups will be recognized and will keep the OS from kernel panic or hard system locks. My only other guess is SoundMAX (on-board high definition 7.1 sound). It's given me numerous problems in several games. I've killed all background processes. I have not killed PunkBusterA and B because I play professionally on CEVO and CAL. Also, Crysis uses PunkBuster.
Just for grins I checked my CPU/GPU/MOBO temps and they all appear well within operational ranges. I have no add-ins except for my graphics card: EVGA GeForce GTX 280. I'm on the i7 processor with the P6T Deluxe motherboard. I use a SATA Hard Drive (I was thinking about firmware updates, but I doubt it's a hard drive issue since Crysis runs for hours). I'm using a Sony CD/DVD RW ROM. My OS is Vista 64 Ultimate. I'm using a USB mouse/keyboard and DELL Flat Panel (DVI).......
(it's been a while since I've needed this kind of support so let me know if more info is needed) Anyways, from the moment Vista plays the logon sound there is static crackling and chirping noises whenever there is audio playing at the same time as any kind of visual change on the screen (not every screen update). For example videos on websites that play them as plugins are especially static-y. However, playing a fullscreen game (i.e. World of Warcraft) does not produce the static.
Interestingly, I have now tried two different video cards. The Nvidia and now a ATI Radeon, both have the same identical problem. I first thought that it might just be a Nvidia Issue but this is not the case. I have checked for IRQ conflicts and none exist that I can find. I have updated Windows as much as I think I can. I've tried changing Creative drivers as well.
I play COD4 ALOT but lately since SP1 ive had issues with sound lagging and or complete system lockups, If I kill SP1 i can play fine with no issues.

Several of which start with "The" and I would really love to find a way to sort the folders skipping the word "The" without having to rename each folder (ie.."Dark Knight, The") So if anyone has any ideas or anything Id love to hear it. View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Vista 32bit service pack 2. I held off because of a problem I was having with service pack 1 (as I am about to explain), but I thought service pack 2 may have fixed the problem. However, it hasn't.
When I try to play a DVD through Windows Media Center it is just all fuzzy and static. You can see the picture moving, but it's so fuzzy and pixelated that it's impossible to actually make anything out. When I play through Media Player, the picture is just black. The sound is working fine in both programs.
I downloaded a program called VLC media player, and that plays the DVDs just fine, so does this mean that it is a problem with codecs? I'm not too sure, hence why I'm asking here on how to fix the problem. Obviously I could just keep using this new VLC player, but I prefer using Media Center.
All .wmv files have stopped playing. I noticed the wmpconfig, wmplayer, and wmpshare files were updated 10/11/07. This appears to have occurred with an automatic Windows update. What happened and how do I fix this. No program I have on my computer will play these videos. I'm running Vista Home Premium.

Yesterday I wanted to use my headset to play a game, so I had to change my settings to stereo to get the sound out of both the left and right headphones. When I had finished, I changed it back to 5.1 through the control panel, but now the sound is only playing out of the left and right speakers. All speakers are functional, since when I test it through the control panel the 'bing' sound plays through all one-by-one. The speakers worked fully in 5.1 before I changed the settings. Windows Vista 32bit SP2.

So now every ten minutes my games freeze up. What can I do about it? I've read some artikels about shutting of DEP completely. I'm wondering though what that will mean for my security. My new PC with Vista Business edition will not play DVD's on Media Player as I was told it would do. I get an error message saying no encoder installed. The help search said go to options and enable encoder. It still doesn't play. Do I need some kind of encoder?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Ultimate x64 and noticed a problem recently when playing music via windows media center. However, having played around in WMP11 also, WMP is doing the same thing so I believe the problem is somewhere in there. Initially the problem started when trying to play a collection of mp3 files off my local drive. Whether it be via an existing playlist or simply by selecting an album within WMC. The problem is that a track plays and then WMC/WMP freezes on the next track. If I skip to the next track that plays, but then the next track freezes. Sometimes the 1st track on the list doesn't play but the next will. Sometimes the 1st plays and then the next won't!
So, I closed WMC and opened up WMP directly. (This happens in both x86 and x64 versions of WMP by the way). If I create a playlist, the same thing happens a track plays, then freezes, if I skip on, the next track plays and then the next one freezes.....
