View 4 RepliesI've been using windows vista 64-bit for a couple weeks now and, though I do find it fast and reliable, am having a huge problem -- the freaking OS seems to like locking up when it works with files of a big size (usually a few hundred MBs). It does not happen always, but pretty often -- to the point where now I save everything I have open before moving any file from a hard drive to the other or simply overwriting it. Its pretty annoying, it happens mainly with big files -- but has also happened a couple times with smaller ones, and I've noticed the pattern already - since every time it locks up like that the system is also doing some work in the hard drive. when it happens, all I can do i restart -
since the system dies completely, no mouse, no sound, no answer of any kind to anything I do but restarting and, once I do so, the system shows no signs of any error, so I can't diagnose whats happening in any way. Any ideas what might be happening? This is a high end system, so its not a lack of resources (amd 64bit dual core athlon 6000+, MSI K9A motherboard, video card is HIS RADEON HD 2900XT and hard drive is western digital 500GB, partitioned in two halves), and is honestly driving me crazy. Also sometimes it starts doing it at random, the system starts and about 2 minutes later it locks up with no reason -- and keeps on doing so several times..................
I've been having issues with COD4 locking up. It locks up randomly. I've proved it's not an overheating issue by playing Crysis on full graphics in a high resolution for two hours. So it's definitely not a heat issue. Joe has informed me that driver lock ups will be recognized and will keep the OS from kernel panic or hard system locks. My only other guess is SoundMAX (on-board high definition 7.1 sound). It's given me numerous problems in several games. I've killed all background processes. I have not killed PunkBusterA and B because I play professionally on CEVO and CAL. Also, Crysis uses PunkBuster.
Just for grins I checked my CPU/GPU/MOBO temps and they all appear well within operational ranges. I have no add-ins except for my graphics card: EVGA GeForce GTX 280. I'm on the i7 processor with the P6T Deluxe motherboard. I use a SATA Hard Drive (I was thinking about firmware updates, but I doubt it's a hard drive issue since Crysis runs for hours). I'm using a Sony CD/DVD RW ROM. My OS is Vista 64 Ultimate. I'm using a USB mouse/keyboard and DELL Flat Panel (DVI).......
I can create restore points but when I try to restore to a previous point, always get the message: "System Restore did not complete succesfully.
An unspecified error occurred " How can I fix System Restore?
when I try to make a complete backup of the computer, after a few minutes i get the following error The backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed (0x80080005). files backup works perfectly

My DxDiag information is:
System Information
------------------
Time of this report: 2/13/2010, 10:09:22
Machine name: DONGXIAO-PC
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.vistasp2_gdr.091208-0542)................
I have an HP dv9000 laptop running Vista premium SP1. Both before and after installation of the service pack I have been getting occasional complete lockups, with the mouse, and keyboard both inactive and the disk access light off. The only way out is the power button. The system is about six months old, has no malware on it, has the latest BIOS installed and passes memtest. I have turned off folder indexing, updated all drivers from the manufacturer and, except for this issue, the system runs well and fast.
The lockups might occur once every couple of weeks --- usually, but not always, when surfing. I have not been able to reproduce the problem and it does appear to be truly random. Does anyone have any ideas what I might try next. The only other thing that happens is that when press the slash key I get his character:? or this one in upper case:? My keyboard is set to English.
my computer started lagging and freezing on me to the point that i had to shut it off by holding the power button eventualy i got it running agin and an hour or two later it started lagging and freezeing again. I tryed to boot in safe mode (and i know it was a bad idea) it seemed like it forze agoin while loading the drivers and i had to manualy shut it off again now when ever it starts up all ican do is start windows normaly or lanuch startup repair. now i've tried both, when i try and start normaly a blue screen appeares too fast for me to read something about unable to move something and if i try launch startup repair all i get is a black screen and a mouse and im starting to panic a little bit

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've recently finished a new build, and I got a set of Bose Companion 3's for my setup. and I must say, they are by FAR the best PC speakers I've ever owned Hands Down.. MUCH better than the Logitech 5.1 I had. But thats why Bose is the best..I have the eVGA 750i Mobo and it's supposed to have a pretty Decent onboard sound card.. but then again, it's onboard so how good can it really be.? I've asked in a few other places what I should get and I was hoping for some ideas. I don't need anything amazing.
I for sure don't need the best like a "Auzen X-FI Prelude 7.1" I kno they rock but I'm not about to spend $200 on a sound card. Those are for the Music Enthusiasts. I personally think that it sounds pretty amazing right now. so some might say why even get a card if "I" think they sound great. some others might not, but i think they do. but I hear it's best to upgrade for the quality will be much better. and this EAX thing with gaming and what not. I was told that makes gaming sound.
I didn't know if this should go in another area or not so I just chose this one.
Anyways, my issue is I have a G5 mouse running Vista Ultimate x64. I have the Logitech SetPoint software to run at startup, but when I go into COD4 and then to controls and set the "throw frag grenade" to Mouse 5 nothing happens but on my G5 the DPI setting light goes from the top LED to the middle one as if I pressed the button to lower the DPI setting on the mouse.
Now I found a work around which was to go into the Startup folder and go into the properties of the shortcut for Setpoint and choose "run as administrator". However, everytime I boot the system it tells me that Setpoint was blocked by UAC and if I want to unblock it I have to choose to manually unblock it. This occurs EVERYTIME I boot up, however, this issue doesn't happen on my laptop which has the same software version of Setpoint and the same mouse, only difference is my laptop has Vista Home Premium.
So with all that in mind, my question is why do I have to run Setpoint as an administrator and tell it to manually run at startup on one system but on another it runs just fine?
I have tried to find on my laptop what if any difference there might be in the Setpoint software but I can't find any.
There must be a switch somewhere that tell the computer whether or no to show the sound icon - bit I can't find it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSometimes, after installing MS updates or other apps, I lose my sound. The only way I get it back is to use System Restore to a point where the sound worked. However, then I don't have the updates or apps. This tells me that it's a software problem with Vista - not a hardware problem. Now, I am about 11 MS updates behind - and no sound. Also, the System Restore doesn't work anymore (I no longer have a Restore point where the sound worked). I've Googled and have found that many people have similar problems with their HP laptops. I am using Vista, SP-2. I am now going to ionstall the updates since I can't go back to get the sound. I've checked in Device Manager (no problem) and made sure I'm using the most recent signed driver. I can't find any text indication that I have a problem but when I go to Playback Options and try the sound Test, I get a message which says the sound didn't play. Hope I included all the relevant information. If not, please tell me. I've tried everything I know of. I have a full backup of my hard drive

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Vista U x64 and am having sound problems. I have a prelude x-fi sound card but the sound coming out of it is extremely low. I have maxed out every thing I can max (control panel sound, creative panel) and the sound level is whisper quiet. I have also upgraded all my drivers except the prelude's, I would but their website isn't offering those drivers at the moment. But the drivers supplied with the card are vista certified so I should get something. But my mobo, etc is all updated. I have been searching for a solution for two days to no avail.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI performed the complete PC backup but I don't know if it worked and if it did, what discs are valid. It was a confusing process. I have 36 GB to backup and it said it should take 3-5 DVD discs. When I inserted the first disc it said to label it, including the date and time of the backup followed by "1". It did the same thing four times, and each time the progress bar started from the beginning. After the fourth disk, it finally went through verifying the disc and the progress bar went further. It told me to label backup was complete. The last two discs are readable but the other three are not. Did the system back up all 36 GB on two DVDs? If there were errors writing to some discs then it should tell me that the discs are not part of the backup set.
