Topic pretty much says it all. It happens when I play numerous games - Counter-Strike, Warcraft III, etc. This has never happened when I had Windows XP. I've searched the forums for a solution but have yet to find one. I'm using 'Win Optimizer' right now and I still get spikes (more frequent as of lately). Anyone know a "fix" or solution for this problem?
View 6 Replieswith all the latest games I have bought (gta IV and mirror's edge) I get DEP errors. I tried to exclude them from DEP but my vista won't accept it. So now every ten minutes my games freeze up. What can I do about it? I've read some artikels about shutting of DEP completely. I'm wondering though what that will mean for my security. On some other forums it has been implied that the DEP errors have something to do with faulty hardware.

I have no idea what the specific problem is (despite hours of troubleshooting), so I'm goign to explain everything as much as I can.I used Vista Ultimate 32-bit for months on my machine and had no problems at all, everything worked great. Then, about 2 months ago, I switched to Vista Ultimate 64-bit because i figured I might as well get all I can out of my CPU. Everything worked fine at first, no major problems. My games and everything else worked just fine. But then, one day (about a month after installing x64), I got this terribly weird lag while playing one of my games. Here's how it always works: The game starts up just like normal and will play normally for a decent amount of time.
Then, all of a sudden, it starts lagging TERRIBLY. My frame-rate drops to almost nothing and my CPU goes up to 80-100%. After a while, the lagging goes away and everything's perfectly smooth, but the the same lagging and CPU rise happens again for a while and then goes away again. It's like a pattern. The sessions of lag generally last a full 1-2 minutes. After this problem first occurred, it never went away. I soon noticed that it didn't just apply to video games either. The rise in CPU usage and the video lag on my screen seemed to happen in a constant pattern no matter what I was doing.....
When playing a variety of games, they will shut down on their own at no specific point of the game. Games this has happened to include: Zoo Tycoon 2, NHL08, Railroad Tycoon Platinum & Sim City 3000 Unlimited. Of course all newly created data from the last save is lost.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been experiencing this problem for some time and am now getting frustrated, Whilst playing several games, Halo 2, Burnout paradise and a few others my pc lags dredfully, to the extent that the games are unplayable, The PC gives a sound indication as if theres a USB device being removed then added continually which is what appears to be causeing the lag but i have not found any way to stop this can anyone help.am running vista home premium 64bit.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I first got my computer, it worked just fine, I played all my games such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and WoW on the fullest settings without a problem. Then a few months later it began restarting after anywhere between 30 mins to 1hour+ of playing. I called the makers of my computer, we tried to see if it was overheating but it wasnt, I also tested the videocards, it wasnt that either. Then, out of nowhere it fixed itself for a few months, then out of nowhere it happened again. I restored my computer to an earlier time and it worked for a few days and now it's restarting again.

No error message at all. It used to work fine until about a month ago. I have no idea what caused this and how to fix it.

I'm having problems playing games (WOW in articular) where I hit Alt F4 or Alt TAB and it takes me out of the game, quite frustrating! I know it will most likely be easier to change in game setup but im hoping to be able to disable the Vista shortcuts or at least disable them for this program etc

Also, they didn't review my specs before sending new solutions.. Giving drivers not compatible for my notebook. I get these 2-5seconds where my gaming ( World of Warcraft ) freezes completely. Basically from what i've read its something to do with Vistas wireless that searches for a new and better connection every 60seconds. My computer is NOT connected to the router, it has a 3/5 signal strength and my ping is OK. Its just these lag spikes that are killing me. I've tried VISTA Anti-LAg and the WLAN optimizer. Nothing works at all. Anyone have ANY other suggestions as to what i can do to get rid of these 2-5second lag spike/freezes with my gaming? Im running VISTA Premium x64bit...
View 9 Replies View Relatedmy problem is that every few seconds my PC suffers from a quick CPU spike that lags the PC's frame rate, but not sound. I've tried running safe mode and this problem does not happen, which says to me that it's a driver problem. i've checked through Windows and my drivers are all up to date and i have problems updating my graphics drivers manually from the website. the spikes arn't a major problem for generally use but it makes reaction based gaming (FPS for example) incredibly hard.
i've also tried:
• checkdisk
• sfc /scannow
• defragmantation
•virus scans
and some other possible "solutions" i've found across the web.
I have a Toshiba notebook with Vista Business installed. Recently I installed the sidebar and added the "CPU performance meter" and noticed that it was constantly in motion. Looking at the Performance tab in task manager, I see that the CPU(s) (dual core) are very priodically show spikes. Every 4 to 5 seconds, the usage jumps from perhaps 10% to 70-80 %, and then goes back to 10%.
The laptop shows this bahavior over long periods of time, even if no application is running. Looking at the processe that are running, it appears that one of the "svchost.exe" (of which there are quite a few) seems to be the culprit, but I have no idea what is behind it. How do I find out what this process is actually doing? Can I simply end it to see what happens, or will that harm my laptop?
I have narrowed down my serious start up degradation on a Gateway ML3109 to spiking CPU and Disk activity as I start up and do almost anything on the notebook. Something is making various services, apps and drivers throw up errors about taking too long to start-up and shutdown. I thought I had narrowed it further to Sound drivers but updating and repeated reinstalls only reduced the sound-related errors. I'm almost sure this is hardware because I have done two clean reinstalls of just the Vista Basic system and it doesn't change. I thought it could be the generic drivers Vista's install disk uses, so I replaced every driver I could find on gateway's website for my model (only chipset wouldn't download, saying my system didn't "meet minimum requirements" even though it was downloaded from Gateway for my serial number) but the result is just fewer errors at each startup, or shutdown, in the Performance-Diagnostics>Operational log accessed on the Advanced Tools panel.........
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm sure this has been reported by several individuals before me, but ever since I have been playing World of Warcraft wirelessly on my new notebook with Vista I have been hiting these lag spikes every couple minutes, that can range anywhere from a second to 15. During this time cpu and disk spike to 100% usuage. I have tried updating my drivers for my NIC and my graphic card, as well as disabling a roam feature on the vista wireless network, but these have not halted the dreaded spikes. Also, I have tried playing while directly connected to the internet but even then the spikes occur. Does anyone know what is causing these spikes and what can be done to solve them?

Just ran Quake4 at full specs and had Nvidia performance control panel turn the fan to 90%... but would like to monitor the temps and frame rates on this and other games. 9800GT 1GB. ( as soon as the new card arrives.... back to ATI tools.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Vista 32bit service pack 2. I held off because of a problem I was having with service pack 1 (as I am about to explain), but I thought service pack 2 may have fixed the problem. However, it hasn't.
When I try to play a DVD through Windows Media Center it is just all fuzzy and static. You can see the picture moving, but it's so fuzzy and pixelated that it's impossible to actually make anything out. When I play through Media Player, the picture is just black. The sound is working fine in both programs.
I downloaded a program called VLC media player, and that plays the DVDs just fine, so does this mean that it is a problem with codecs? I'm not too sure, hence why I'm asking here on how to fix the problem. Obviously I could just keep using this new VLC player, but I prefer using Media Center.
All .wmv files have stopped playing. I noticed the wmpconfig, wmplayer, and wmpshare files were updated 10/11/07. This appears to have occurred with an automatic Windows update. What happened and how do I fix this. No program I have on my computer will play these videos. I'm running Vista Home Premium.

Yesterday I wanted to use my headset to play a game, so I had to change my settings to stereo to get the sound out of both the left and right headphones. When I had finished, I changed it back to 5.1 through the control panel, but now the sound is only playing out of the left and right speakers. All speakers are functional, since when I test it through the control panel the 'bing' sound plays through all one-by-one. The speakers worked fully in 5.1 before I changed the settings. Windows Vista 32bit SP2.

All of a sudden i now go into movie maker and open the project and it won't play/preview the movie. My new PC with Vista Business edition will not play DVD's on Media Player as I was told it would do. I get an error message saying no encoder installed. The help search said go to options and enable encoder. It still doesn't play. Do I need some kind of encoder?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Ultimate x64 and noticed a problem recently when playing music via windows media center. However, having played around in WMP11 also, WMP is doing the same thing so I believe the problem is somewhere in there. Initially the problem started when trying to play a collection of mp3 files off my local drive. Whether it be via an existing playlist or simply by selecting an album within WMC. The problem is that a track plays and then WMC/WMP freezes on the next track. If I skip to the next track that plays, but then the next track freezes. Sometimes the 1st track on the list doesn't play but the next will. Sometimes the 1st plays and then the next won't!
So, I closed WMC and opened up WMP directly. (This happens in both x86 and x64 versions of WMP by the way). If I create a playlist, the same thing happens a track plays, then freezes, if I skip on, the next track plays and then the next one freezes.....
I have a problem with windows dreamscene. When I try to apply downloaded .wmv dreamscenes from sites such as dreamscene.org or and custom .wmv for that matter, it works but when I restore a minimized window and then if if i x out or go back to my desktop the dreamscene which is a custom .wmv is paused...when I right click to hit play dreamscene i cannot for it is already supposedly playing..and sometimes when apply a custom .wmv it experiences that problem and it will also sometimes cause explorer.exe to crash and then ask me to restart explorer.exe or find solution online?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi have the notebook since a month and everything works fine. however, i always have that strange sound playing in vista. it happens every 5-10mins, i dont know what it it. its not caused by the hardware, but its played by vista, so to make it clear it is a soundfile. i have no clue, which software or whatever causes it. anyone, who has an idea? and no, it was already there with the original setup, it is not because of any software i installed additionally. i would really be happy, if someone knows how to stop that.
