Recommended Simple Folder And Files Backup

Apr 11, 2008

I currently have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with window XP Pro installed. For specific folders and files, I use the AKGBackup Program and it has worked well for me, especially since it is so easy to use and I can access any backed up folder or file with just windows explorer. I don't need a lot of features. In the very near future, I plan to purchase a new Dell computer with Vista Business Edition. any simple folder/file backup programs (Vista compatible) that is similar to the AKGBackup program. I should note that the AKGBackup program web site does not indicate if it works with Vista (the last time I checked). I should also note that I have researched a bit about windows Live OneCare and it appears to be somewhat lacking. Imaging, I currently use the Symantec Livestate Recovery Desktop Edition for my current computer and plan to purchase the ShadowProtect Desktop Edition for my new computer.

Is There Simple Backup Program?

Oct 18, 2009

I used to use Ghost (DOS floppy, up until 2003) back in the day to do full backup images(full drives and/or partitions, Windows, Linux, etc) to an external USB HDD. Basically, I'm looking to do same thing (for a laptop):

- Don't have to install anything. (Except, maybe to just make bootable CD/DVD, then can uninstall "main" program.)

- Able to boot the backup program from a CD/DVD, external of any OS.

- Make manual backup images of drives and/or partitions to an external USB HDD.

- Backup images of complete HDD are exactly that, complete (i.e., including the MBR)

- Able to backup Win7/Vista/XP and Linux ext2/3 partitions.

- Able to backup any "unknown file system" partition in RAW (sector) mode such as FreeBSD.

- I have no need for any "incremental" or "scheduled" backups or any other automated BS.
(That is just more BS that can wrong, if you ask me.)

- None of this new fangled "hidden recovery partition", "messing up your MBR", etc, etc that all these new backup programs seem to enjoy having.................

"simple Folder View" Disabled

Mar 23, 2008

I use Explorer in Classic view, with "simple folder view" disabled. This works fine as long as the cursor is over the folder pane, but when the folder pane loses focus, all of the {+] and [-] boxes for expanding and collapsing the tree disappear, leaving gaps in the lines that show the tree structure. This really looks amateurish, and it's distracting to have the boxes appear and disappear as the cursor passes over the folder pane. Is there any way to make the boxes permanently visible? Am I missing some obvious option in the folder view settings?

Icons/Files From User Folder Showing Up In Computer Folder

Nov 26, 2009

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

Program Files Folder Switched To Pictures Folder Type...

Apr 15, 2008

I don't know how this happened, but I didn't do it myself. For some reason,my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo size, etc.I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc.The sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, without SP1.How do I change the folder type back to General?I can't figure out how with this single folder.

Backup Folder Sizes?

Mar 23, 2008

My external 500gb drive is being used for both Vista File Backup and Complete PC Backup. It says I now have only 70gb free on the drive? I'm puzzled on the disk usage. My file backups go into a folder under the PC-Name folder called Backup Set 2007-08-05 230745 but the folder properties says it has 0 bytes usage in 33 folders. I've been doing a scheduled file backup once a week since August 5, 2007. Now my Complete PC Backup is under WindowsImageBackupPC-NameBackup 2008-01-03 052342 and the folder properties says it is using 91gb with 10 files inside. There are no other Backup folders under WindowsImageBackup, just a Catalog folder taking 24kb of space.

I'm wondering where the remaining used space is at? I tried changing folder view options to show hidden and system folders but they don't account for the missing space. I wanted to delete a bunch of the old File Backups to make room for more Complete Backups. I'm getting an error when trying to start a Complete PC Backup saying there is not enough space on the drive? The File Backup still works.

Creating A New Backup Set Folder

Mar 23, 2008

I currently use the Vista (Ultimate) Backup and Restore Center to back up my files. I would like to create a new backup set folder (for example, Backup Set 2007-11-01 091921) so that I can delete older backup files to save disk space. When I manually backup using the Back up files button in the Backup and Restore Center, it simply creates another backup folder (Backup Files 12-25 154345) within the existing set folder, not a new set.how to create a new backup set folder?

How Vista Creates 138 MB Backup Folder?

Mar 29, 2008

In XP the backup feature was very extensive, highly configurable and trustworthy. It was the only OS in each I had to do disaster recovery and I can prove from experience that it works (Windows Server versions use the same). You could schedule several types of backup (Normal, Differential, incremental, etc) and could get NT backup to compress the catalogue, which if you have lots of highly compressible documents (DOCs, etc) can reduce the size of the catalogue quite considerably.

Yesterday I asked Vista to do a full backup on the new HD. It only gave me 1 option, which was to choose the destination (the new HD). I did not find options for scheduling, types of backup and compression. This morning after the backup has finished the backup folder that Vista created was 138 MB.

Now please tell me, how come Vista creates a 138 MB backup folder if I now only have 110 GB of data in the disk? Where did it get the extra 28 GB from? If you are going to justify saying I now need to buy a backup application, don't bother. It was there in XP and it worked. It would have cost MS absolutely nothing to leave it there. I don't even trust the backup that Vista did, so I am left with the feeling that I ended up wasting 138 GB of space for nothing.

Moving A Few Files Around And Organising My Folders When I Lost A Few Files From A Folder

I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.

Cannot Backup Files

Dec 13, 2009

Ever since I received my new (refurbished) laptop, I have had the message of "insufficient storage available. cannot backup files." Further, my computer has always run slower than any other computer I have used. I get the message "low disc space..running out of disc space" often. (Dell has been no help whatsoever, and at this point, I am out of warranty.)

To try to resolve my problem I have compressed the drive 'to save space' which gave me 231 mb of space. Certainly not enough to run any backups. I have defragmented and get the message that it does not have to be defragmented at this time.................

Can't Option Backup Files

May 20, 2009

Suddenly, my computer freezed (just like it has been doing for some time now). When I restarted it, the computer asked for the Vista DVD, so that it could repair some files (I couldn't even boot into Safe Mode). I put the DVD inside the drive, and choose the "Repair your computer" option, but it reports that no Vista installation is found...

I then boot into the Rescue and Recovery environment (that is a Thinkpad suite, located in another partition of the disk) to see what's going on. The System Information detects everything except the Hard Drive (it reports "Not Available" for the fields "Hard disk free space" and "Hard disk capacity"). I also can't see the harddisk in the option to backup the files to a pen (the pen is recognized, though). Just to be sure, I run PC Doctor and my hard disk passes all tests.

No Space To Backup, But No Files In The D Drive!

May 15, 2009

I've been trying to back up my laptop since I bought it last year, but the
first time I did it, it said "backup failed" (I didn't look at why, just gave
up) and since then, every week when it does its sad little attempt to back
up, it says "last backup failed".

I finally decided to give it another crack tonight, but when I looked at the
D drive, it said that I only had 1.28GB free of just over 5GB. I looked in
the file to see if there was anything I could get rid of so I could start
from scratch, but apparently there's nothing in there apart from the little
RECOVERY file (87kb) which it says I shouldn't touch, so I'm not going to!

I am completely computer deficient and I have no idea about anything! I'd
be really grateful if someone could give me a clue (in Vista Backup for
Dummies terms) as to what's happening here and how I can FINALLY back up my
laptop, and maybe even begin to love it like I should!!

Is It Possible To Decrypt EFS Files Without Backup Certificate

Oct 26, 2009

A PC had Vista installed and one folder was encrypted by OS. This folder had some thousand or so files. Then Vista was reinstalled, with most old system files (including "Windows", "Users" and "Documents" folders) deleted before reinstallation. Encrypted folder left intact on HDD. Is it possible to get files from encrypted folder somehow decrypted under newly installed copy of Windows? Username and password for Windows account used to encrypt folder are known. Utilities like Elsomsoft's EFS recovery could not do much - when account password have been supplied utility said that it can decrypt about 90 files in total with no hint on why specifically these files can be decrypted and not others.

Windows Backup Missing Files

Mar 6, 2009

We recently had a need to replace a hard disk. Our original files were all backed up with Windows Vista Backup. The backup process produced no errors and appeared to complete successfully. However, when we restored the backup to the new hard drive, we found that there were many missing files. To this point, it appears that the missing files are all .EXE files. In many cases, all the files were restored to a folder, except for the executable (.exe). We know that these files existed when the Windows Vista Backup was performed on the original hard disk. Moreover, we backuped the same files later using a different program and have confirmed the files were there.

Is anyone aware of a problem where Windows Vista Backup is either NOT backing up all the files or is NOT restoring all the files? Furthermore, it is odd that this seems to have affected only certain files which brings us to wonder if our security software could have blocked files somehow without our knowledge
