View 4 RepliesI have a 720GB internal drive that I've maxed out with automated weekly backups. I have another drive with a lot of space, and my question is, can Vista backup be set to continue the existing backup onto an additional drive. In other words, the backup files would be spread over two drives?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing some interesting problems with an optical drive on a Lenovo T61p laptop running Vista Business x86 SP1. The problem is that the DVD drive will not auto play and while it recognizes that a disc is in the drive and the files on the disc, it does not recognize any executables even though they are there.
I am shying away from it being a hardware issue due to the fact that I have swapped the drive out with a known working drive and it does the same thing. And the oddest thing about it is that when a disc is in the drive a little apple pops up in the lower left hand corner of the DVD icon in My Computer:
Before SP1 was installed, whenever I created a new folder, and then clicked on the folder icon while I was changing the name from "New Folder" to whatever (or pressed <ENTER>), I would immediately go into that folder, so that I would not have to double-click it to go in. Since I installed SP1, this is not happening. Is there any way of re-enabling this feature?
View 9 Replies View Relatedi've got a few folder questions: would there be a way to add the option to 'sort by type' to every folder? i use this often, and it gets annoying to have to add it manually. secondly, is is possible to disable 'auto arrange' and enable 'align to grid' for EVERY folder? i can't stand auto arrange, personally. i tried 'folder options > apply to folders' but got no success. also, a bit unrelated, but i've come across occasional folders that don't display the dot next to 'sort by -> (whatever)'. i can click 'sort by type', for example and it will re-order the icons but won't show the dot. this is a bug, right? (two folders that it isn't working in is C:users and C:users(username)music)

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy external 500gb drive is being used for both Vista File Backup and Complete PC Backup. It says I now have only 70gb free on the drive? I'm puzzled on the disk usage. My file backups go into a folder under the PC-Name folder called Backup Set 2007-08-05 230745 but the folder properties says it has 0 bytes usage in 33 folders. I've been doing a scheduled file backup once a week since August 5, 2007. Now my Complete PC Backup is under WindowsImageBackupPC-NameBackup 2008-01-03 052342 and the folder properties says it is using 91gb with 10 files inside. There are no other Backup folders under WindowsImageBackup, just a Catalog folder taking 24kb of space.
I'm wondering where the remaining used space is at? I tried changing folder view options to show hidden and system folders but they don't account for the missing space. I wanted to delete a bunch of the old File Backups to make room for more Complete Backups. I'm getting an error when trying to start a Complete PC Backup saying there is not enough space on the drive? The File Backup still works.
I currently use the Vista (Ultimate) Backup and Restore Center to back up my files. I would like to create a new backup set folder (for example, Backup Set 2007-11-01 091921) so that I can delete older backup files to save disk space. When I manually backup using the Back up files button in the Backup and Restore Center, it simply creates another backup folder (Backup Files 12-25 154345) within the existing set folder, not a new set.how to create a new backup set folder?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn XP the backup feature was very extensive, highly configurable and trustworthy. It was the only OS in each I had to do disaster recovery and I can prove from experience that it works (Windows Server versions use the same). You could schedule several types of backup (Normal, Differential, incremental, etc) and could get NT backup to compress the catalogue, which if you have lots of highly compressible documents (DOCs, etc) can reduce the size of the catalogue quite considerably.
Yesterday I asked Vista to do a full backup on the new HD. It only gave me 1 option, which was to choose the destination (the new HD). I did not find options for scheduling, types of backup and compression. This morning after the backup has finished the backup folder that Vista created was 138 MB.
Now please tell me, how come Vista creates a 138 MB backup folder if I now only have 110 GB of data in the disk? Where did it get the extra 28 GB from? If you are going to justify saying I now need to buy a backup application, don't bother. It was there in XP and it worked. It would have cost MS absolutely nothing to leave it there. I don't even trust the backup that Vista did, so I am left with the feeling that I ended up wasting 138 GB of space for nothing.
Unfortunately I imported a backup folder for my email (.dbx) files without exporting the existing folder which I was going to replace from another pc. The original folder contained recent email files.I have done numerous searches but alas no avail to a former location for my Windows Mail original folder. I have Windows Vista - Home Premium and the former email folder was the original folder with a new PC (Dell Inspiron 530).

For specific folders and files, I use the AKGBackup Program and it has worked well for me, especially since it is so easy to use and I can access any backed up folder or file with just windows explorer. I don't need a lot of features. In the very near future, I plan to purchase a new Dell computer with Vista Business Edition. any simple folder/file backup programs (Vista compatible) that is similar to the AKGBackup program. I should note that the AKGBackup program web site does not indicate if it works with Vista (the last time I checked). I should also note that I have researched a bit about windows Live OneCare and it appears to be somewhat lacking. Imaging, I currently use the Symantec Livestate Recovery Desktop Edition for my current computer and plan to purchase the ShadowProtect Desktop Edition for my new computer.

(The 3rd one.)I've had the Touchsmart for a month and the case broke - so before I swapped it out at Best Buy I went over to the Backup and Recovery area of Vista and made a full restore on to an external hard drive. The folder "WindowsImageBackup" now exists on my G: external drive. I go swap out the two machines, come home and try and get Backup Status and Configuration to recognize the G: drive backup - it finds the drive, not the backup. I get to the point where it searches for a backup to restore - but it won't see anything there. I can see it, but apparently Windows can't. Besides cuss at HP for making a machine I had to return twice because of hardware issues. It's a sweet little tablet (multi-touch) but I've got some lemons right off the rack. Don't let me down Vista community!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to back up my laptop since I bought it last year, but the
first time I did it, it said "backup failed" (I didn't look at why, just gave
up) and since then, every week when it does its sad little attempt to back
up, it says "last backup failed".
I finally decided to give it another crack tonight, but when I looked at the
D drive, it said that I only had 1.28GB free of just over 5GB. I looked in
the file to see if there was anything I could get rid of so I could start
from scratch, but apparently there's nothing in there apart from the little
RECOVERY file (87kb) which it says I shouldn't touch, so I'm not going to!
I am completely computer deficient and I have no idea about anything! I'd
be really grateful if someone could give me a clue (in Vista Backup for
Dummies terms) as to what's happening here and how I can FINALLY back up my
laptop, and maybe even begin to love it like I should!!

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been using an external USB hard drive to back up my HP laptop system - backing up EVERYTHING incrementally on the drive (including the OS). If I ever had a serious problem, I could rebuild my system without having to reinstall all my software. Recently, my backup hard drive crashed - DEAD!! Before I buy another external hard drive, I would like to get some opinions on other backup strategies. I used to clone my "C" drive (about once a week) in addition to the external hard drive.
But I no longer have an extra 2 1/2" drive large enough to back up to. The cost of additional drives for backup is not an issue. I would just like to get other opinions so I can choose one that works for me. Suggestions for drive models and types are also welcome as well as software. Currently, I use software from Aquarius I.S. Consultancy for sequential backup and I cloned my "C" drive with Acronis True Image.
My backup drive D in Windows Vista is full up and I can't seem to be able to empty it or allocate more space to it. It only has 9.99GB of space allocated to it and my computer is now complaining that it can't backup. Does anyone know how to allocate more space to it, or should I just delete everything on it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Vista Ultimate about a year ago, and a few months later also installed Suse 10.2 and I know dual boot, GRUB handling the boot. I have no problems whatsoever running either OS, and they are both installed on the same physical disk, just different partitions. Now, here's the strange thing: If I open disk management, the C-drive is visible and listed as healthy. If I run the Vista backup app, it can't even see the hard drive it itself is Installed on! A while back I had problems installing a patch, and through Googling it started having suspicions that the patch problem could have to do with my dual boot setup (the patch had to do with the disc encryption thing), so I thought I'd restore Vista's boot record and delete the Suse partitions, but when I start from the DVD and select repair, it can't see the OS.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI do weekly full backups to an 300 GB external USB hard drive with the built-in Windows Vista backup program. On my entre C: drive I've only used about 100 GB, and this of course includes both the OS, apps, and user data files. I just looked at the J: backup drive in Windows Explorer and the pie chart of Properties is showing the Used Space as 200 GB which really surprises me. I don't get this. On this backup drive there's only a single parent folder called RICK. The Properties of this folder shows only 21 GB of files. Yet Properties of the drive itself shows a pie chart of 200 GB Used Space.
Something is taking up a lot of extra space on the backup drive and I'm not sure what it is. I did a Disk Cleanup which found a Recycle Bin that hadn't been emptied out, but that only released about 15 GB. If this is any clue: before doing each full backup I manually delete the previous week's backup from the hard drive.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Home Premium system that will not start. It gets as far as the system bootup progress bar, tries to start then suddenly the system shuts down. I have tried every possible recovery/repair technique I could find and still no luck. The system is using a Intel motherboard with Matrix Storage RAID which I have configured as RAID 1. In the repair console (from Vista DVD) I can read the drive from a prompt window so I assume the data is safe. I would like to back up the user data (photos, docs, email) and do a reinstall without the RAID 1 configuration. I have heard there are problems with Vista and the Matrix Storage controller.
Question is: How would I go about backing up a non-bootable Vista drive? I have another system running XP pro that I could mount the Vista drive to and copy the data to a portable USB drive. Is this a possibility? Will I run into any "access denied" issues when saving the data off to a backup drive? Also, the system was using Outlook 03 for email. What is the best way to recover the Outlook email data (messages, addresses, etc.) from a non-bootable disk? Is this email data in the same location as it is with XP?
If I do a complete backup on my Vista Ultimate laptop and do the restore to a larger hard disk, will it work? I have read differing reports of whether it will or not.
