Hard Drive Backup
Apr 14, 2008
I want to backup my entire C drive, OS and ALL the files on that drive. I don't believe that the backup utility in Vista backs up the operating system and ALL files. c Can someone point me in the right direction to accomplish this.

I've been using an external USB hard drive to back up my HP laptop system - backing up EVERYTHING incrementally on the drive (including the OS). If I ever had a serious problem, I could rebuild my system without having to reinstall all my software. Recently, my backup hard drive crashed - DEAD!! Before I buy another external hard drive, I would like to get some opinions on other backup strategies. I used to clone my "C" drive (about once a week) in addition to the external hard drive.
But I no longer have an extra 2 1/2" drive large enough to back up to. The cost of additional drives for backup is not an issue. I would just like to get other opinions so I can choose one that works for me. Suggestions for drive models and types are also welcome as well as software. Currently, I use software from Aquarius I.S. Consultancy for sequential backup and I cloned my "C" drive with Acronis True Image.

I have an Acer notebook with Vista SP2 oem . I intend to upgrade the internal drive from 80 to 500 GB but as the machine came with an early version of Vista home premium pre-installed I do not have a Vista cd to reinstall the os only a recovery dvd. I have a free version of Macrium reflect that I use to make an image of the comlete C: drive. Is it possible to swap hard drives and copy this image to the new hard drive without any prior formatting or os loaded on it.

I have just repartioned an old ide hard drive which has a very small partition with XP on and i now have a large partition on the drive that i want to use as a back up drive. What format is the best for backup? I have heard that FAT32 is good and it also means it can be read by OSX if the need ever arose (could be useful because my flat mate is a mac user).

I installed Vista Ultimate about a year ago, and a few months later also installed Suse 10.2 and I know dual boot, GRUB handling the boot. I have no problems whatsoever running either OS, and they are both installed on the same physical disk, just different partitions. Now, here's the strange thing: If I open disk management, the C-drive is visible and listed as healthy. If I run the Vista backup app, it can't even see the hard drive it itself is Installed on! A while back I had problems installing a patch, and through Googling it started having suspicions that the patch problem could have to do with my dual boot setup (the patch had to do with the disc encryption thing), so I thought I'd restore Vista's boot record and delete the Suse partitions, but when I start from the DVD and select repair, it can't see the OS.

I currently do a complete PC backup with Vista Ultimate 32 bit to an external hard drive. I am buying a new computer with an Intel® Core™ i7-920 Processor and Intel® DX58 Chipset. I believe this is a 64 bit system. Two questions... First of all, can I restore my 32 bit files to it? and secondly, my new computer has a larger hard drive. Is the larger hard drive a problem when restoring?

I am running Vista Home Premium 32 SP3 and use an HP 500 GB Personal Media Drive (PMD) for backing up the machine. I only have 88 GB of used space on my 325 GB drive C, yet the backup of the files and folders on drive C appears to be *much* larger than 88 GB. For example, when I click on the drive letter, L, of the PMD and click Properties, I find that there is 294 GB of used space and only 171 GB of free space. I.e., over half the space on the PMD has been used up.
Yet when I use Windows Explorer to ascertain the Properties of each folder on the PMD drive, with Show Hidden System Files turned on, the content of all eight folders only adds up to approximately 4 GB of data. What is going on here? Why has so much of the PMD been taken up by what appear to be ghost files or folders? When I use Windows Explorer to check the Properties of the individual backup folders on the PMD, of which there are at least one for every day since I started using the PMD to back up my desktop, every single folder shows 0 bytes for its content. I just don't get it!

I'm sorry I never wanted Vista and IE 7.0 or 8.0 from the numerous bad reviews and complaints... I understand the solution would've been to have it built by a local PC store? If I had the guts and the knowledge, I'd return it (now on the way) and order a custom made... and probably lose the bargain of the year??? :o)
ALSO, my present HD is still very good at 4 years of age, so is it possible to use it as a "slave" backup? Yet, in case of a computer calamity, wouldn't the data get lost also in the slave HD? So...is it possible to use it as an external backup? If so, what does it take?

The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly. I did my research - read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled:
Windows index
Windows defender
Windows search
Superfetch
System Restore
Readyboost
Defragmenter
I have uninstalled google desktop.
The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.

I have a 720GB internal drive that I've maxed out with automated weekly backups. I have another drive with a lot of space, and my question is, can Vista backup be set to continue the existing backup onto an additional drive. In other words, the backup files would be spread over two drives?

I have a ASUS laptop running Vista Home Premium, 64 bit OS. I have several programs that I use but no loner have the insall disks for. Should I have to reformat in the future I would hate to lose them. Here's what I'm thinking: Buy a extrenal hard drive. Seagate, 1Tbit, usb, cost $90.00. Copy my hard drive to it. If I need to reformat. Reinstall Vista from my recover disk that came with the computer. Then copy files from external drive. Bingo. All my old programs would be there and working. Question is: Can this be done?
What file/folders do I need to copy to the external drive?

I have an external hard drive, I reformated it so I could use Vista's backup. Now it seems that when my brother inlaw tries to put some music files(Itunes) that the hard disc is unavailable to his computer. At this stage it seems that Vista has conned me into destroying a perfectly good WD harddrive!I have created a second partion on the hard drive and I am reformatting that, as I write this, but the only formatting option seems to be this NTFS, and that is what I had already formatted the ExtHD to so I think this formatting will be to no avail! From what I can figure I need to format into FAT but I tried a quick format an ex-fat option was there, but the problem was the same. I am becoming more frustrated with Vista, seems I just keep running into things that should be simple and aren't!

i bought a kit for an old hard drive. i got it to work once ealier today, and now it doesn't work. when i plug it into the usb, it will not successfully install. the kit is a rocketfish hd 35, the hard drive is seagate u8 model st313021a. the "remove hardware" icon appears in the tray, but no designated lettered drive appears on the computer.
the hard drive was part of an older tower that i couldn't get to boot. it's strange because just today i accessed the hard drive and located old pictures, music and other files that i hadn't seen in a few years. had i known this would have happened i would have started saving right away. i thought i had it working.

I've upgraded my machine at some point in the last year, where I added a new 500GB drive and moved my C: partition across to it. The previous 250GB drive was left in for additional storage. Just recently (while upgrading my BIOS) I realised that my system was still booting from the 250GB drive even though Windows was on the other disk. There is a fair possibility in the not too distant future that I'll replace the 250GB disk with a larger disk, in which case I won't be able to boot. Is there a safe and reliable way to change it so that the system boots from the 500GB disk?

I was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!
The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......

I just bought and installed a external hard drive. I am fairly knowlegable about computers but this is my first Ex. Hard drive and know very little about there use. So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? I saved it to a DVD one time but when the time came when I needed it all that was there was a short cut but no files.

I fitted a NAS Drive to a customers Network: BT HomeHub, Dell PC running Vista connected wirelessly and 2 Dell Laptops also wireless the NAS is plugged into BT HomeHub. The customer had previously used an external USB drive connected to the Dell PC to backup to, I tried to change the Backup to the NAS drive, when I try to change the Backup schedule Vista keeps asking me for passwords to connect to the NAS, I have tried using the passwords on the NAS but then it gives a RPC error with varying code numbers then goes onto say drive J: not found. I have tried setting NAS to J: with no joy, the big kick in the pants is the NAS is seen and able to access in "My Computer" Can I delete the Backup schedule if so how do you do it?

I'm operating Vista Ultimate x64 on an HP Tx2 Touchsmart. (The 3rd one.)I've had the Touchsmart for a month and the case broke - so before I swapped it out at Best Buy I went over to the Backup and Recovery area of Vista and made a full restore on to an external hard drive. The folder "WindowsImageBackup" now exists on my G: external drive. I go swap out the two machines, come home and try and get Backup Status and Configuration to recognize the G: drive backup - it finds the drive, not the backup. I get to the point where it searches for a backup to restore - but it won't see anything there. I can see it, but apparently Windows can't. Besides cuss at HP for making a machine I had to return twice because of hardware issues. It's a sweet little tablet (multi-touch) but I've got some lemons right off the rack. Don't let me down Vista community!

I've been trying to back up my laptop since I bought it last year, but the
first time I did it, it said "backup failed" (I didn't look at why, just gave
up) and since then, every week when it does its sad little attempt to back
up, it says "last backup failed".
I finally decided to give it another crack tonight, but when I looked at the
D drive, it said that I only had 1.28GB free of just over 5GB. I looked in
the file to see if there was anything I could get rid of so I could start
from scratch, but apparently there's nothing in there apart from the little
RECOVERY file (87kb) which it says I shouldn't touch, so I'm not going to!
I am completely computer deficient and I have no idea about anything! I'd
be really grateful if someone could give me a clue (in Vista Backup for
Dummies terms) as to what's happening here and how I can FINALLY back up my
laptop, and maybe even begin to love it like I should!!

I have a 250 gig backup drive which is now full and my weekly backup is failing. the drive I am backing up shows only 133 gig used in properties why has the back up exceeded the total disk usage i am backing up. The file structure on backupo drive shows only one backup set dated 2007-08-04 within which are the weekly folders for my backups each of which contains a varying number of zip files. I am reluctant to just delete and start over but cannot see a way of managing backed up data.
