I have Vista 64 OEM and have been using it for about 3 weeks. I decided to buy XP again and made a dual-boot setup. The problem is that I had to remove Vista to install XP first. Now, after I reinstalled Vista its saying that my old activation activation code is "already in use." I haven't installed any new hardware. Is there a way to tell it that this is the same computer, just with Vista reinstalled?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI used to use Ghost (DOS floppy, up until 2003) back in the day to do full backup images(full drives and/or partitions, Windows, Linux, etc) to an external USB HDD. Basically, I'm looking to do same thing (for a laptop):
- Don't have to install anything. (Except, maybe to just make bootable CD/DVD, then can uninstall "main" program.)
- Able to boot the backup program from a CD/DVD, external of any OS.
- Make manual backup images of drives and/or partitions to an external USB HDD.
- Backup images of complete HDD are exactly that, complete (i.e., including the MBR)
- Able to backup Win7/Vista/XP and Linux ext2/3 partitions.
- Able to backup any "unknown file system" partition in RAW (sector) mode such as FreeBSD.
- I have no need for any "incremental" or "scheduled" backups or any other automated BS.
(That is just more BS that can wrong, if you ask me.)
- None of this new fangled "hidden recovery partition", "messing up your MBR", etc, etc that all these new backup programs seem to enjoy having.................
I currently have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with window XP Pro installed. For specific folders and files, I use the AKGBackup Program and it has worked well for me, especially since it is so easy to use and I can access any backed up folder or file with just windows explorer. I don't need a lot of features. In the very near future, I plan to purchase a new Dell computer with Vista Business Edition. any simple folder/file backup programs (Vista compatible) that is similar to the AKGBackup program. I should note that the AKGBackup program web site does not indicate if it works with Vista (the last time I checked). I should also note that I have researched a bit about windows Live OneCare and it appears to be somewhat lacking. Imaging, I currently use the Symantec Livestate Recovery Desktop Edition for my current computer and plan to purchase the ShadowProtect Desktop Edition for my new computer.

Error message says it is in use by another computer. The Microsoft web site Help and Support solution did not work - same error message. They now want to charge me to get a new product code or contact them for help.

I attempted to do this by going to Control Panel....Turn On/Off Windows Features....checked all of the boxed under .Net 3.0.....then it configues but then displays the message "an error has occurred. not all of the features were successfully changed" I have no idea what to do....I attempted to see if I could uninstall .Net 3.0 but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Edit: I just had to call back and talk to someone else who actually knew what they were doing and they activated it for me! So um.. if anyone has this problem, make sure you try twice
I am contemplating getting a new Hard Drive (bigger, of course by a large margin!) and with the problems I have had with activation in the past, despite being a bloody genuine copy (calm down, Philip, calm down) - how can I go about activating on a new hard drive without experiencing the same c**p I have in the past (last one just needed to type in serial and it was activated, but the 2nd time I had to go via Indian call centre and was on FORTY FIVE MINUTES FFS !!!!....calm down, lad...calm....) I then did an upgrade and entered my key code but I believe the software hasn't been activated even though I chose activate automatically. When I try to activate it it gives me an error saying the code is for upgrade (which I did).Is there a way I can find out if it has been activated? I have 4 GB of RAM installed, but I now see only 3 GB--and when I try to activate ReadyBoost, there is an error message telling me there is already a cache on another device in the system. I had a 30 GB hard disk on which I had all my docs....plenty of space on this. I removed the 40GB disc, installed a new 320GB disc (along with a new video card, power supply, RAM and DVD burner) and rebooted using F1 command, from DVD, and installed OEM Vista Ultimate which computer shop sold me as best (read: cheapest) way to go to Ultimate - especially as I was rebuilding so much of my PC...IS THAT RIGHT? . And can you guess how many processes show up in TaskManager? 26. ONLY TWENTY SIX. My IE8 starts up lightning fast and swings by all sites except videos, for certain sites w/FlashPlayer & Videos I enable CompatibilityView which aligns those older sites to IE8.
Applications startup as if they were already loaded into Memory, faster than in WinXP. Who knew? It feels like quad-core at 4GHz, seriously. Everything is momentary as if it were loaded from RAM This OS is still a failure, however, versus WinXP. Are you shocked to hear "failure" after my praises, do I contradict myself? No. Because most people are far from my tenacity and just by education, hobbies and profession I alway stune up things to perfection. My cheap car leaves far more expensive models wondering what rocket had just passed them on LIE Expressway. I enjoy tinkering with technology.
It took me 2 weeks (?) to tune up Vista beast to be a polished fast, bug-free beast. It's more convoluted than was tuning WindowsXP. I spent several days in Registry, GroupPolicies, SecPolicies, filesystem digging out and blatantly renaming & moving system files no one is supposed to touch.........
When I input the cd to install XP it is stating that it cannot since there is a newer verision on the laptop. If I try to reformat C and take Vista off, it says i can't do that since this is the operating system for the laptop and won't format. How do I remove Vista and put XP on it?

This works fine as long as the cursor is over the folder pane, but when the folder pane loses focus, all of the {+] and [-] boxes for expanding and collapsing the tree disappear, leaving gaps in the lines that show the tree structure. This really looks amateurish, and it's distracting to have the boxes appear and disappear as the cursor passes over the folder pane. Is there any way to make the boxes permanently visible? Am I missing some obvious option in the folder view settings?

Well I've been able to get this stupid MSI P6N Diamond MB to run okay but just getting fustraited over the way it would act up. Anyway I ended up going shopping and now have a Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition Processor, GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P 1366 X58 MB and 12 gigs of CORSAIR DOMINATOR (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 on the way. Hopefully I will die before I ever need to upgrade anything else.....
Well with upping the memory, figured 12 would be better than 6 for x64 systems now the PSU calculator says I will need 566W so still less than my PSU. Only other thing I wonder is is Vista smart enough that I can just move the HD's from my current sytem or should I expect that I'll have to reformat and reinstall Vista x64
Going to wait til the clock strikes 12:01 to due my reformat & restore so all registers read 2009. To many bugs & problems, can't take it anymore.
