64 Cannot Reformat Main Drive
Dec 9, 2007
Using Vista 64 I want to completley reformat my harddrive and reinstall vista but it doesnt seem to want to let me delete everything it wants to backup some files and put them in a windows.old folder. I obtained a virus that cant be removed by any program (I've literaly tried everything spent days trying) I just want to reformat with no backups. I remember reformating reinstalling windows XP by using a dos command after bios like /reformat C: or something? How do I completely reformat my main drive in Vista?

I have been having alot of slow downs, and alot of problems lately, heres a quick list: usb ports wont identify things when i plug them in, I have to reinstall the usb port for it to realize its there, as for my wireless mouse and keyboard it doesnt recognize it at all my network card will work for a while then only give me limited connectivity resulting in me having to use a usb wireless thing, but the above problem makes this annoying. Plus I figured that starting Vista clean would be a bit better, but my question is how do I reformat my hard drive in vista I tryed the old command prompt "format c:" but it gives me a ridiculous message saying i need to be in elevated mode So unless someone can help me fix the above problems, I need someone to help me reformat my hard drive

I noticed my system getting rather sluggish over the past several days and giving errors at boot-up. I ran a disk cleanup and Check Disk with both options selected. The problem persisted, and CPU utilization was normal, so I started going through the event logs and found a slew of the following errors even after having done everything above:
Log Name: System
Source: disk
Date: 1/6/2009 2:13:54 PM
Event ID: 7
Task Category: None
Level: Error...............

I tried to reformat vista home P. I followed all the steps to get to the advance boot option, selected Repair Your Computer, It went directly to log me on, there was no click Dell Factory Image Restore, no Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory conditions. It took me to the standard log on window. I tried this 3 times with no luck for a reformat to factory condition.

My daughter has forgotten her password for her laptop. She has Windows Vista. When you turn on her laptop it comes up asking for a password straight away, this is the one that she's forgotten.
I thought that I could make a reset password disc from a friends computer who has Vista, but this doesn't work.
It allows me to put in a new password and question hint, but when I click next it comes up with 'an error occured while wizard was attempting to set the password for this user account'. Is this because I've copied it from another computer?
I can change her password as I don't really want to do a system restore as she has all her homework and pictures on there and don't want her to loose it.

Doing some partition work a few days ago, and somehow lost the boot for my main system. D was my main system, as you can see it holds a lot of applications and information, "C" is a fresh install. Question is can I get "D" to reboot, it doesn't show in msconfig/boot. I know I can transfer bit by bit, but its a long winded job, I feel there must be a way to repair reboot. Tried the system disc Repair mode, only shows system on "C". 2 hard discs, "C" and "F" on one drive "D"on the other.

so here is my problem. I partitioned my c drive to make room for a test windows 7 install. well apparently my DVD burner hates me, so i never got the chance to try it out. The partition is 30GB. Now it says free space. but i cant extend my main partition back to it was. It says it's an extended partition. Do i have to make it primary to extend the c drive? And if so, how would i go about that? It also asked me, when not a drive, if i wanted to delete the partition... Would that make it primary? It says the partition will become inaccesible if you delete it...

I'm having a problem with Vista business that's driving me crazy. At work I have Vista business on a main machine (called MAIN). It's a Dell Vostro and it came pre-installed with Vista Business, 4 GB RAM, 200 GB hard drive. I have patient management and imaging software on it and I have up to 7 computers that connect to MAIN to access this software. I have all the sharing and security settings for "Everyone" and I can connect with all seven computers most of the time. But everyday, one or two of the workstation computers (running Vista basic), will be kicked off and I get an error message when I try to reconnect to MAIN "No more connections can be made at this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as this computer can accept."
So I can't access the software on MAIN, I can't print to the printer on MAIN, I can't do anything until I reboot MAIN. Then everything can connect again. This happens randomly and I know the maximum connections is 10 computers, so why am I having this problem with 7? Connection to the router is fine and I have internet connections on all seven. 2 of the seven are wired to the router and the other 5 are wireless connections.

I have Vista 64 OEM and have been using it for about 3 weeks. I decided to buy XP again and made a dual-boot setup. The problem is that I had to remove Vista to install XP first. Now, after I reinstalled Vista its saying that my old activation activation code is "already in use." I haven't installed any new hardware. Is there a way to tell it that this is the same computer, just with Vista reinstalled?

Well I've been able to get this stupid MSI P6N Diamond MB to run okay but just getting fustraited over the way it would act up. Anyway I ended up going shopping and now have a Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition Processor, GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P 1366 X58 MB and 12 gigs of CORSAIR DOMINATOR (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 on the way. Hopefully I will die before I ever need to upgrade anything else.....
Well with upping the memory, figured 12 would be better than 6 for x64 systems now the PSU calculator says I will need 566W so still less than my PSU. Only other thing I wonder is is Vista smart enough that I can just move the HD's from my current sytem or should I expect that I'll have to reformat and reinstall Vista x64

I am getting ready to install Vista Home Premium with an SP1 disc included. I have XP Pro now. I know I would have to reformat since it won't do the over install with the versions I'm working with. I'm fine with that. I have a dual HD laptop. I will take out my C drive with XP and put another identical one in to install Vista on. I have reformatted many times. There are certain registry entries I keep to help get my programs back the way I like them. Will XP's registry entries work with Vista? Sure makes it easier to get things tweaked and back the way I likeKate

I keep getting the blue screen and it crashed on me several times freezing and the only way to get rid of the freeze was to manually restart. I reformatted my computer. Everything has run smoothly until the second week, no freezing but the blue screen just comes up! Ever since that time it come up it does it now at least 2-3 times a day. I don't know what to do with this computer anymore. -Sony Vaio VGN-CS115J. I've installed two different registry repairs and it seems to make everything worse than it already is. I run chkdsk and it gives me just the information "chkdsk /f" doesn't work. How can I repair what the chkdsk has encountered?

I have installed a video card awhile back and have a few hypothetical questions. If I had a problem that should pop up that I couldn't fix and need to reformat can I leave my video card and a proceed as normal. Would I have to remove card because it is not part of original system configuration and reinstall after the reformat. I don't know why I didn't ask about this when I got my video card but it never came to my attention. Now that it has I am kind of stumped and worried. Any body gone through something similar and what where the results.

I have a friend with Windows Vista Home Basic on his HP laptop, he has a valid key in the back of it on a sticker, it worked before, but after a reformat and reinstallation of Windows, it keeps bugging him that it's not genuine. We tried various command prompts found online to reset validation keys or stuff like that, we passed the phone activation successfully, but still there's no change.

I've got a serious problem. I decided to do a fresh installation of Vista Ultimate on my $4000 Asus VX2S Lamborghini notebook (which I got after getting a nice pay bonus back in 2007. Details of the Lambo are here: 'Techgage - ASUS Lamborghini VX2' It was very sluggish and took about 5minutes to loadup. It was slow in multitasking and hanged on Windows Media Centre operations. Played games ok tho - but needed a cooler.
Things improved a bit after I deleted some of the Asus bloatware mentioned in the unofficial asus notebook forum FAQ. Stuff like Splendid, TPM, Asus Protect, Asus live update, power4phone etc... But it still seemed a tad slow for a US$4000 machine, esp the startup and multitasking. I mentioned this to my friend a computer guru who advised me to do a format and fresh clean installation. He had a spare moment in the weekend so he formated C drive - including the recovery partition as I did not want the pre-installed Asus software.......................
