Just want to know how you guys reformat without the OS disc, cos my lappy doesnt come with a recovery disc or OS disc but am quite sure they have install the recovery somewhere in my lappy... Also, if the recovery is in the lappy itself, are we able to extract it and save it into a disc?
View 9 RepliesBasically my gf's pc started to mess up alot, she was using it at uni with no internet connection but as soon as she finished uni and brought it back and started using the internet it started playng up, so she got it formated, but alas, no vista disc, she still has the product code on a sticker on the PC itself. She has already paid for vista so is there a way of getting the vista disc (for her pc) for free?? if so/if not where can i get one and will this work ok??

The problem is that I had to remove Vista to install XP first. Now, after I reinstalled Vista its saying that my old activation activation code is "already in use." Well I've been able to get this stupid MSI P6N Diamond MB to run okay but just getting fustraited over the way it would act up. Anyway I ended up going shopping and now have a Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition Processor, GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P 1366 X58 MB and 12 gigs of CORSAIR DOMINATOR (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 on the way. Hopefully I will die before I ever need to upgrade anything else.....
Well with upping the memory, figured 12 would be better than 6 for x64 systems now the PSU calculator says I will need 566W so still less than my PSU. Only other thing I wonder is is Vista smart enough that I can just move the HD's from my current sytem or should I expect that I'll have to reformat and reinstall Vista x64
Going to wait til the clock strikes 12:01 to due my reformat & restore so all registers read 2009. To many bugs & problems, can't take it anymore.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been having alot of slow downs, and alot of problems lately, heres a quick list: usb ports wont identify things when i plug them in, I have to reinstall the usb port for it to realize its there, as for my wireless mouse and keyboard it doesnt recognize it at all my network card will work for a while then only give me limited connectivity resulting in me having to use a usb wireless thing, but the above problem makes this annoying. Plus I figured that starting Vista clean would be a bit better, but my question is how do I reformat my hard drive in vista I tryed the old command prompt "format c:" but it gives me a ridiculous message saying i need to be in elevated mode So unless someone can help me fix the above problems, I need someone to help me reformat my hard drive

I know I would have to reformat since it won't do the over install with the versions I'm working with. I'm fine with that. I have a dual HD laptop. I will take out my C drive with XP and put another identical one in to install Vista on. I have reformatted many times. There are certain registry entries I keep to help get my programs back the way I like them. Will XP's registry entries work with Vista? the only abnormality i found was in the bios, the boot settings always turn to this even after i reset them to defaults:
i already tried using Alt+F10 to try and reformat my computer to factory defaults, but that doesnt even work.
I keep getting the blue screen and it crashed on me several times freezing and the only way to get rid of the freeze was to manually restart. I reformatted my computer. Everything has run smoothly until the second week, no freezing but the blue screen just comes up! Ever since that time it come up it does it now at least 2-3 times a day. If I had a problem that should pop up that I couldn't fix and need to reformat can I leave my video card and a proceed as normal. Would I have to remove card because it is not part of original system configuration and reinstall after the reformat. I don't know why I didn't ask about this when I got my video card but it never came to my attention. Now that it has I am kind of stumped and worried. The problem persisted, and CPU utilization was normal, so I started going through the event logs and found a slew of the following errors even after having done everything above:

I followed all the steps to get to the advance boot option, selected Repair Your Computer, It went directly to log me on, there was no click Dell Factory Image Restore, no Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory conditions. It took me to the standard log on window. I tried this 3 times with no luck for a reformat to factory condition.

I decided to do a fresh installation of Vista Ultimate on my $4000 Asus VX2S Lamborghini notebook (which I got after getting a nice pay bonus back in 2007. Details of the Lambo are here: 'Techgage - ASUS Lamborghini VX2' It was very sluggish and took about 5minutes to loadup. It was slow in multitasking and hanged on Windows Media Centre operations. Played games ok tho - but needed a cooler.
Things improved a bit after I deleted some of the Asus bloatware mentioned in the unofficial asus notebook forum FAQ. Stuff like Splendid, TPM, Asus Protect, Asus live update, power4phone etc... But it still seemed a tad slow for a US$4000 machine, esp the startup and multitasking. I mentioned this to my friend a computer guru who advised me to do a format and fresh clean installation. He had a spare moment in the weekend so he formated C drive - including the recovery partition as I did not want the pre-installed Asus software.......................
I remember reading that this was possible, at least with XP, but I can't seem to find any page that would allow this. The only thing I found was a page that allowed digital download buyers to get back up discs.
Considering the fact that slipstreaming isn't possible, I would definitely like to replace my Ultimate retail discs with sp1 discs.
After my PC was burned out by lightening through my Broadband connection I
received a new PC from my insurers with Win.Vista Business, but I did not
received (and will not) the Windows Installation CD.
Whilst setting up the new PC with various matters an invitation appeared for
me to make a Windows Recovery disc, but I was too busy with other matters to
do it there and then, so thinking that this invitation will appear again I
cancelled it.
It is now some weeks and the invitation has not reappeared. Which way can I
make the Recovery Disc in case of a crash?
I'm having trouble with the DiscCleanup in Windows Vista. When I try to open cleanmgr.exe for C: it opens for a second but closes fast when it comes to "Setup Log Files" Cleanmgr.exe worked fine for C: before a security update from windows update was installed. Is there a way to fix this?

I bought a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD off ebay (don't laugh), but what I actually got I'm not sure is legal so I'd appreciate some advice before doing the return/refund thing. The disc was advertised as genuine with a product key. When it arrived however this DVD is an obvious copy burnt on a PC, not a factory made disc. There was no product key but a piece of paper with activation instructions. at this url is a picture of the DVD and also a scan of the instructions that came with it. The activation instructions were printed on an A4 piece of paper.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen i bought the laptop the there were 3 partitions, due to the two seperate hard drives, i used Drive C:/ for all of my programs and just school files. Drive D:/ is for music and movies, and E:/ are the standard HP recovery discs that come on the Hard drive. Yesterday when i turned on my computer i got a message telling me i had low disk space on drive D:/. But i don't have that much on it. The day before i still had 160gb free on that drive. It has just all a sudden become filled.
I have run symantec antivirus, windows defender, ad-aware, and ccleaner to try to fix the problem. I have also defragged the drive, and gone in and manually looked at all of the hidden and system protected files. I see no reason that the frive should be full, because all the most i have on that drive is 60gb.
I have a new PC in which I installed Vista Ultimate x64 OS...everything is OK with that OS apart from one thing, ME...I do not like Vista Ultimate at all. I now have a XP Pro x64 CD which I would like to install and use as my ONLY OS. Trouble is that I cannot get the disc to boot. I have tried (in vain) to change my boot sequence in Vista Ultimate x64 and, no matter what I do I cannot get the CD/DVD drive as my 1st boot. If I use f2 (set-up) I cannot even move CD/DVD drive from it's bottom position in the boot sequence list and when I go to f11 to select and enter boot device my optical drive is listed but if I select that my PC seems to ignore this and boots from hdd giving me Vista Ultimate again. I have been with this problem for a couple of weeks now and I decided that it was time to turn to the experts for advice :-)
