Errors At Boot-up, Reformat, Or New Hard Drive?

Jan 6, 2009

I noticed my system getting rather sluggish over the past several days and giving errors at boot-up. I ran a disk cleanup and Check Disk with both options selected. The problem persisted, and CPU utilization was normal, so I started going through the event logs and found a slew of the following errors even after having done everything above:

Log Name: System
Source: disk
Date: 1/6/2009 2:13:54 PM
Event ID: 7
Task Category: None
Level: Error...............

Reformat Hard Drive

Feb 26, 2007

I have been having alot of slow downs, and alot of problems lately, heres a quick list: usb ports wont identify things when i plug them in, I have to reinstall the usb port for it to realize its there, as for my wireless mouse and keyboard it doesnt recognize it at all my network card will work for a while then only give me limited connectivity resulting in me having to use a usb wireless thing, but the above problem makes this annoying. Plus I figured that starting Vista clean would be a bit better, but my question is how do I reformat my hard drive in vista I tryed the old command prompt "format c:" but it gives me a ridiculous message saying i need to be in elevated mode So unless someone can help me fix the above problems, I need someone to help me reformat my hard drive

Can Not Find Ext Hard Drive Errors

Feb 21, 2009

I thought I saw a post from someone who was having this same issue but couldn't find it. I am trying to check an ext hard drive for errors and when I try to "safely remove it" and keep getting the message that it is still in use when there is nothing using it, the light is steady. This happens for both my drives often. What gives?

I followed all the steps to get to the advance boot option, selected Repair Your Computer, It went directly to log me on, there was no click Dell Factory Image Restore, no Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory conditions. It took me to the standard log on window. I tried this 3 times with no luck for a reformat to factory condition.

Changing Boot Drive But Still Booting From Old Hard Drive

Mar 26, 2008

I've upgraded my machine at some point in the last year, where I added a new 500GB drive and moved my C: partition across to it. The previous 250GB drive was left in for additional storage. Just recently (while upgrading my BIOS) I realised that my system was still booting from the 250GB drive even though Windows was on the other disk. There is a fair possibility in the not too distant future that I'll replace the 250GB disk with a larger disk, in which case I won't be able to boot. Is there a safe and reliable way to change it so that the system boots from the 500GB disk?

Replacing Boot Hard Drive?

May 24, 2009

I have a dual boot system - XP on the boot drive and Vista on a slave drive. The boot drive is failing (clicking on boot and often preventing the computer from passing the bios splash screen). The Vista install modified the boot header on the XP boot drive. This means that I cannot just buy a new boot drive and install XP on it because the boot information allowing for dual boot will need to be re-written to it. How do I do this?

Is it possible for me to make a backup of the dual boot information installed by Vista so that when I replace the boot drive I can copy at least some parts of the information to the boot drive? Will I have to reinstall both XP and Vista on the slave drive? It has taken me ages to get a stable Vista install on the legacy mobo and I have finally managed it - I wouldn't want to reinstall Vista from scratch
just because the boot drive which contains XP and the dual boot information is dying.

320/500 GB SATA Hard Drive Wont Boot

Jan 26, 2009

Issue: Its seen that computer having a samsung hard drive of 320 GB and 500 GB will give black screen with a cursor at the top left corner and it wont boot.

The reason behind this is these hard drives contains a scanner inside them which periodically scans the hard drive to check for error and tries to recover them.
Resolution: Enter the Boot device menu(By pressing the F12 or F9 key on the manufacturer logo).

Change the Boot Device

Select HARD DRIVE as the 1st boot priority and press enter. The system may or may not boot...

Dual Boot W/ Each O/S On Separate Hard Drive

May 18, 2008

Here is my situation: I have XP installed on a SATA drive in a computer I just put together (AMD x2 5600+, ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe, 2Gig Ram) and I want to install another SATA drive with Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I want the ability to dual-boot like some people do when they have 2 operating systems on the same drive but in different partitions. I originally install Vista Ultimate 64 bit as the O/S but it was incompatible with many of the programs I use so I installed XP Pro.Otherwise I liked Vista.

Dual Boot On External Hard Drive

Mar 23, 2008

I read in the news, this past January, that MSFT was not going to support XP after June 30, 2008. I don't remember the extent of support downside. My concern was that I wanted to be ready and updated. I like having the latest gadgets, especially if helps organize my life. I had the machine to upgrade on, too. I have a HP Media Center PC, Pentium D (dual), and a decent and adequate graphics card. I souped it up to 3.5GB RAM and added a PCI slot for SATA connection. I added the SATA connection because I had just purchased a 750GB external hard drive. I got it for storage and back up. At the time I did not know I could do a dual boot install. I found that out on HP's site.

So I thought that would be the best choice for me, in case Vista did not work out. That made me feel a lot better about the transition. As I started to do the dual set up, I saw my new external drive there with all that room and thought, why not see what happens?????! It???s been a little rocky, I have to say. I like Vista now that the serious stuff is behind me. Microsoft was very helpful. I still lose my connection when I connect through my router. My never ending anxiety is this. Did I do the right thing? Is my external drive sturdy enough to handle the rigors of the Operating System drive? The tech guys said it could not be done. I went ahead and tried and it DID work. I worry that the drive is going to crash. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? The external drive is Western Digital MY Book Home Edition, 750GB, USB, FireWire and SATA connections. The RAID PCI slot I installed is 1.50mbs. I had no PCI express available that would have given it 3mbs. (I think I have the standards right, if not, I bet most who know understand.)The graphics was installed there....

Boot Manager Location Physically Disconnected The Hard Drive

Mar 23, 2008

When I've installed vista, the installation have set the boot manager to be on a different disk than the the boot loader. Now, if I want to remove the hard drive containing the boot manager, the system won't load, which is reasonable given these conditions, nonetheless I DO want to remove this hard drive and still be able to boot, therefore I've searched and queried everywhere and done the following: Physically disconnected the hard drive with the boot manager on it (d and boot with the Vista DVD to run startup repair -> this didn't help, the startup repair found the operation system but didn't recognize any problem, when trying to boot the system would not load, the error I'm getting when booting is disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart.

(reconnected d:, and system boots flawlessly, then) I've manually changed the boot manger (and memory diagnostic, the only other bcd entry on the d: drive) location with bcdedit to c:, and now bcdedit (and VistaBootPro) show the boot manager (and memory diagnostic) in the c: drive, HOWEVER, if I try to boot from that drive I get the same error: disk read error.................

System Restore Can't C Drive Errors

Oct 14, 2009

First off, after restarting my computer one day, I found it to either not get past the loading screen or freeze 5 minutes after if i could log on. I tried a few things that did not work and went to do a system restore from the windows repair tools upon booting up. When i tried to restore i get the message that a system restore cannot be done because the C drive had errors. It prompted me to do a disk consistency check upon restart which i did. After trying a few times i find that it always freezes at 7% through, and will not move. Finally, i tried booting into safe mode, only to find that it too freezes when it is loading files, always at windows/system32/drivers/crcdisk.sys. The computer is only 2 months old, bought brand new at best buy. A rocketfish 550watt power supply and Geforce 9800 video card were installed by the employees, but no other hardware was replaced or tampered with.

Windows Mail Errors Occurred While Processing, But Show No Errors

Jul 4, 2008

I am having a problem with my Windows Mail. I have had to do a restore using the Packard Bell restore feature on the advice of my tech guy and have encountered a problem. Prior to the restore everything worked fine.

The problem is in the send/receiving of mail. When I press the Send/Receive button the Windows Mail dialogue box (showing the error tab) comes up a tells me;

Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more details?

No errors are showing and at the bottom of the box it shows ?0 of 3 tasks completed successfully?.

At the bottom right hand corner of my screen it shows the number of the last messages received. I can still send messages if I go to; Tools, Send and Receive and Send.

On starting up my PC and Windows Mail, mail is received and sent in the normal way but when I try Send/Receive any time after that the problem occurs.

I have checked my ISP mailbox and there are no outstanding messages.

I have checked all my setting against my laptop and they match, I have three e-mail addresses and am operating Windows Vista Premium, all updates are downloaded automatically.

Hard Drive Trashing: Hard Drive LED Light On My Sony Vaio Keeps Blinking EVERY SECOND

The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly. I did my research - read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled:

Windows index
Windows defender
Windows search
Superfetch
System Restore
Readyboost
Defragmenter
I have uninstalled google desktop.

The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.

Extrenal Hard Drive: Copy Hard Drive To It?

Jul 29, 2009

I have a ASUS laptop running Vista Home Premium, 64 bit OS. I have several programs that I use but no loner have the insall disks for. Should I have to reformat in the future I would hate to lose them. Here's what I'm thinking: Buy a extrenal hard drive. Seagate, 1Tbit, usb, cost $90.00. Copy my hard drive to it. If I need to reformat. Reinstall Vista from my recover disk that came with the computer. Then copy files from external drive. Bingo. All my old programs would be there and working. Question is: Can this be done?
What file/folders do I need to copy to the external drive?

External Hard Drive: Hard Disc Is Unavailable

Sep 27, 2008

I have an external hard drive, I reformated it so I could use Vista's backup. Now it seems that when my brother inlaw tries to put some music files(Itunes) that the hard disc is unavailable to his computer. At this stage it seems that Vista has conned me into destroying a perfectly good WD harddrive!I have created a second partion on the hard drive and I am reformatting that, as I write this, but the only formatting option seems to be this NTFS, and that is what I had already formatted the ExtHD to so I think this formatting will be to no avail! From what I can figure I need to format into FAT but I tried a quick format an ex-fat option was there, but the problem was the same. I am becoming more frustrated with Vista, seems I just keep running into things that should be simple and aren't!

the hard drive was part of an older tower that i couldn't get to boot. it's strange because just today i accessed the hard drive and located old pictures, music and other files that i hadn't seen in a few years. had i known this would have happened i would have started saving right away. i thought i had it working.

External Hard Drive Crash: Drive Is EMPTY

Oct 6, 2009

I was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!

The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......

Boot Time And Boot Drive (not Listed)

Jul 1, 2008

I've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a lot of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the hell? Before you ask, here are my specs. Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.

My current boot time distribution:
1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so)
2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu).
3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds................
