View 5 RepliesI rebuilt my home PC yesterday. I had a 40GB HDD on which I had Vista Premium and my Applications. THIS WAS running out of space. I had a 30 GB hard disk on which I had all my docs....plenty of space on this. I removed the 40GB disc, installed a new 320GB disc (along with a new video card, power supply, RAM and DVD burner) and rebooted using F1 command, from DVD, and installed OEM Vista Ultimate which computer shop sold me as best (read: cheapest) way to go to Ultimate - especially as I was rebuilding so much of my PC...IS THAT RIGHT? . All went fine.......BUT I failed to notice until after activating Vista that I had installed it on the second HDD (the small 30 GB one 'left over' from my original PC configuration!!!!!...

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn XP, I used my Windows Key to map to Ventrilo speak (I used Litestep, not Explorer). In Vista (and Windows 7) this little bug is proving to be quite annoying. I've love to be able to just disable to Start Menu pop-up, or at least disable it when in game, but still maintain it as a normal key.

If I use the windows update tool it wont update anything, it gives me error code 80240016 , 80092004 or 80073712 which doesnt even appear on the microsoft site even though its apparently very common. The only reason I wanted SP1 is because of the problem with virtual address space when playing games. My work machine will never have vista on it.

When I was using 32 bit Vista I had all my Hotmail folders, newsgroups, calendar, etc. when I selected the Mail icon. Is there a way to migrate Hotmail to Windows Mail, or a way to replace Windows Mail with what I had when I was using 32 bit Vista? I had IE 8 with 32 bit and I have IE 8 with 64 bit.

I attempted to do this by going to Control Panel....Turn On/Off Windows Features....checked all of the boxed under .Net 3.0.....then it configues but then displays the message "an error has occurred. not all of the features were successfully changed" I have no idea what to do....I attempted to see if I could uninstall .Net 3.0 but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I am contemplating getting a new Hard Drive (bigger, of course by a large margin!) and with the problems I have had with activation in the past, despite being a bloody genuine copy (calm down, Philip, calm down) - how can I go about activating on a new hard drive without experiencing the same c**p I have in the past (last one just needed to type in serial and it was activated, but the 2nd time I had to go via Indian call centre and was on FORTY FIVE MINUTES FFS !!!!....calm down, lad...calm....) I have 4 GB of RAM installed, but I now see only 3 GB--and when I try to activate ReadyBoost, there is an error message telling me there is already a cache on another device in the system. Because of the sudden disappearance of 1 GB of memory, I suspect it has somehow been allocated to disk cach. How do I go about recovering that 1 GB and activating ReadyBoost.

I shrinked the OS partition (160 GB), created new partition (40 GB) for 64 bit windows 7 ultimate. After installation of Windows 7, I cannot see the vista ultimate boot option when I boot my PC. When I boot into Windows 7, I still can see the vista partition. But instead of C: it is now displayed as E: I used the HP Recovery Disc to repair windows vista but I can only see a blank blue screen with the mouse pointer. How can I recover the vista?

I had some trouble setting up my Sound Blaster Live but finally managed to get everything going using a file I found on this forum. After doing some reading here I find I should be updating to SP1 and that there might be issues with Creative drivers while doing so.
So before I attempt the download and install, I would be grateful for any advice. Like... should I remove my Sound Blaster? Do I need to un-install the creative driver? Can I just disable that piece of hardware in the device manager? Can I leave everything the way it is and attempt the download/install? Or is there something completely different I should be doing to make this the least painful possible.

I can't seem to update Vista! I got a new game today Order of War, which requires Service Pack One, so I did the what was needed, I went into my Windows Update and asked the program to update my computer, 106 important updates downloaded and installing, then comes the part I didn't want to see, it tells me the updates were downloaded but not all were able to be installed, about 2 of them got installed! Which brings me to my query (now that i am overly paranoid about tinkering with hardware) i have been researching and have found there is very mixed opinion on applying Bios updates and was wondering what people here thoughts. I have two pending Bios updates 1st addresses better support for SP2 and the 2nd improves system performance & LCD panel brightness.
and if i apply these updates do i need to do both updates or just apply the current one, any opinions would be greatfully received.
I use Firefox and I would like IE8 to stop showing up as a critical update.

I recently updated a bunch of drivers on my Inspiron 1525 with Vista Home Premium 64bit; and, now the Fingerprint logon icon is on my login screen. It wasn't there before and I don't believe it was a part of my updating. I have searched everywhere for the Fingerprint Driver and have not found it or anything that could be linked to it. I wish to remove its annoying presence from my computer.

I went to download an process the update, later it asked me to insert a blank disk. Well I don’t have a blank disk but I hit bootable cd anyway thinking it would create some file on the hard drive. Well obviously that’s not what it had in mind because my disk drive opened, I shut the disk drive and it started saying writing data to disk. HOW could it do that with no disk. I couldn’t close it. It then said installation succesfull. What the heck. I restarted my computer to see if I had screwed up my system and it seams to be running fine. Have I screwed up my hard drive? Did the dang update install? Can I delete these firmware updte files lying around on my desktop?

I had a Windows 98 computer previously.
I copied the "dbx" files from Outlook Express 5 into a temporary folder on the new machine.
I imported them into Windows Mail (correcting the path error in the import wizard).
Windows Mail crashed, and when I reloaded Windows Mail all of the local folders had vanished except for the Inbox, which was inaccessible. After restarting it again a few times, nothing changed.
Eventually I went to the folder store in AppData, and deleted all the files in the Windows Mail folder, assuming them to be corrupted in some way.
When I restarted Windows Mail, it recovered and recreated the Local Folders structure for me again.
Back to square one.
I tried importing the "dbx" files again, and this seemed to work,appearing under "Imported Folders".
All seemed well, but now for the problem.
If I want to create a folder, or delete a folder, or move a folder,the change does not show up live in the folders list in the left pane.
However, if I click on local folders, the change shows up in the right pane, which lists the local folders tree in expanded form.
To repeat, Windows Mail seems to make the change to the folder structure, but does not update the live folders list in the left hand pane.
However, if I restart windows mail after creating, deleting or moving, the change is visible in the left hand pane.
I've been running into a problem lately running Steam on vista. It seems that whenever I start the steam client it crashes 26% into updating itself with some weird exception. I tried uninstalling steam and then reinstalling steam to see if this solved the problem, but I haven't had much luck so far. Has anyone else been experiencing this issue, and possibly, does anyone know of any work arounds.
