Recovering Corrupted Registry - Completely Lost

Jul 29, 2009

While browsing with Firefox I randomly get a virus notification, and a program pops up masquerading as my windows. I ignore it, and kill the process, named b.exe. AVG reports infection after infection, and after cleaning them all it mentions that I'm required to restart to finish the process. I go to restart, but it's taking forever, and in my impatience I hit the power button. Now windows won't boot - even in safe mode - and it keeps crashing on some ***disk.sys file when trying to boot in safe mode. In normal mode, it blue screens with an error about failing to load a registry cluster. I used a vista cd to do a recovery, and the automatic recovery failed. However, I couldn't delete the files, because apparently some process was using them. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't bring up the process menu in recovery mode, and i tried the commands ps, process, pskill and others to no avail

Lost RAM : Recovering 1 GB And Activating ReadyBoost

Mar 22, 2009

I have just done a fresh install from the recovery partition in my Tohsiba X205 laptop. I have 4 GB of RAM installed, but I now see only 3 GB--and when I try to activate ReadyBoost, there is an error message telling me there is already a cache on another device in the system. Because of the sudden disappearance of 1 GB of memory, I suspect it has somehow been allocated to disk cach. How do I go about recovering that 1 GB and activating ReadyBoost.

Sound Lost Completely

Jan 2, 2010

Recently, after an unsuccessful attempt to upgrade to Windows 7, my reinstalled Vista Home Premium 64bit, after operating normally for a while, lost sound completely. I cannot pinpoint the event that prompted this malfunction and instead of trying to toubleshoot the onboard Realtek High Definition Audio, I installed a Diamond Xreme Sound 5.1 card running a C-Media Electronic driver ver. 6.12.8.1737, which is the latest for this sound card. The sound card worked fine, after a restart, producing rich sound via Logitech's X-210 2-speaker-plus subwoofer system. As long as I kept the system on Sleep, the sound worked fine. As soon as I turned the computer off for the night last night, the system reloaded with no sound playing whatsoever.

I have disabled the onboard Realtek High Definition Audio under Device Manager as well as the ATI High Definition Audio Device that appeared after I installed a Gigabyte HD 5770 graphics card BEFORE I installed the sound card. The only active audio devices now are the C-Media PCI Audio Device (Diamond sound card) and the Logitech Mic QuickCam S7500. Under Sound in the Control Panel, the only playback device is Speakers that are checked and are reported OK by the system as part of the Diamond sound card. Under Recording, the following devices appear: C-Media Microphone currently unavailable Line-In C-Media Audio Device (speakers) checked and working C-Media Aux device currently unavailable C-Media CD player currently unavailable C-Media Stereo Mix currently unavailable C-Media Wave currently unavailable Logitech Mic Working Under Sounds Play Windows Startup sound is checked. After installing the latest C-Media driver and restarting the computer, I receive faint sound from one of the Logitech speakers with volume turned to 100 pc. But no stereo, strong sound....!

Quicksys Registry Cleaner: Not Recommended To Defragment Registry Across Drives

Feb 27, 2009

WARNING: only for advanced users who like to clean the registry. Quicksys regcleaner normally $25 free - only 4hrs left from here: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

Win 7 compatible - have used this and deleted all 1200 entries it found. It makes a backup - been running for several hours and reboots with no probs. Also working fine so far on my Vista x64 and Win 7 x86 installs. After cleaning you need to shut the app. and reopen it for it to find it's backups. (Easy to find them by hand - it can compress them to.7z files, too ). Have used their regdefrag a lot - identical scans and results to the Auslogics and Glary versions- so use whichever defragger you already have. WARNING: not recommended to defrag registry across drives.

Uniblue Registry Booster And Registry Scans.

Nov 13, 2009

I am using this program to clean up my registry and it seems to work fine except the errors keep coming back. I can do a scan, clean up all the errors and then shut down and start up and I have a new 20 registry error list and most or all of the errors relate to "bad path for the value" and its windows files that seem to be at fault. I don't understand why Microsoft operating system would create registry errors on a startup, before anything has been installed etc. is RegistryBooster misleading me or what. I am running win7 but it did the same thing on vista home premium so I think the question is valid for this group.

Recovering MS Word DOCX Files

Nov 23, 2009

I had three MS Word 2007 docx files on my hard drive. I deleted them and emptied the trash. I immediately used some File Recovery programs to try to recover them. The programs were unable to find them. That seems very strange to me. Is it possibly because they are docx files? This is a relatively new file type by Microsoft, right? I am using MS Word with Vista Home Premium.

I should probably add that the programs cannot find files with the names of the files I deleted. Are the names changed when they are deleted and the Recycle Bin emptied? I have heard that files are not wiped clean from your drive. Only the directories are changes, but the data is still there until it is written over..................

Recovering Serial Didn't Work

Mar 23, 2008

I just upgraded my system's motherboard, chip, and ram and ran into a big problem. When I booted up for the first time, Vista started to boot up then reset. When I ran recovery, it told me some drivers were corrupted (probably the old hardware) . I ran the motherboard disk and installed the new drivers and to make a long story short, it didn't work. Add that to the fact that I can't find my serial number sticker and I'm screwed. Is there a way to find my serial using the Dos prompt or can windows pull my serial off my hard drive if I reinstall? Please help, the copy of Vista is only 4 months old and I was waiting to put the sticker on when I got the new case + Motherboard setup

Recovering Files From Computer Prior To Install

Mar 26, 2008

I recently go a new PC and had geek squad install some virus/etc software on it a remove gateway branded 'programs'...when I turned on the computer for the first time it seemed as though GSquad had installed everything as I had access to the internet, download photos from my camera, access Microsoft programs etc. When I tried to open the backup hard drive that I had from my laptop it said I needed to install Vista to proceed.

So I started to, following the prompts where it said that it would back up my previous files that I had, and it took several hours. Now that I have Vista, I realize that i don't have any of the picture files that I previously saved. I know I'm foolish not to have backed up the computer myself before the install but I didn't think it would erase everything. Normally I wouldn't be concerned but I just got engaged and we captured the moment in those photos. I know there may be no hope but I just thought someone out there might have a solution....

Completely Shutdown And Restart Again

I am running Windows Vista Home Basic and I accidently performed a hard shut down earlier today. Now when I boot up my computer, it will boot up and then it will completely shutdown and restart again. When it shuts down, it gives me a blue screen and then says "Windows has been shut down to prevernt damage to your computer. bad_pool_reader". I can boot up in safe mode, but if I try to boot it up regularly, then this cycle happens all over again. What do I need to do to fix the problem (preferabbly without having to reinstall Windows/deleting all of my information on the computer)?

No Password For Only Account = Completely Boned?

Mar 23, 2009

Qouted for various sources on the internet and re-wrote in my own words "If there is only 1 account on your vista rig, and you loose the password for the account, you have to run out, buy a new installation disc for a few hundred and reinstall"

Is this true?

One night while my grilfriend was sick as heck, she decided to change her password. not really smart cause when she woke up the next morning, she didn't remember anything from that day. so now she has no password. now, if this was XP i'd be able to open it up in safe mode, jump into the administer account and and make the password something simple. but since it's vista, the powers that be decided that it would be best if the administer account was not enabled by default. so i cannot go through in safe mod to change the windows password. i tried the reset password technique, but to do that you need a password reset disc such as a floppy disc,(no port) or flash drive that somehow has the windows install on it. right. i've tryed password cracking softwear. that worked on my home XP, and it got my password, and my brothers. but when i tried the Vista versions on her Piece of C, it came up with no password set.

we're all relitivly poor and cant afford $200 for XP or Vista just to loose all the stuff she had on her computer. please. prove me wrong. tell me how to get passed the password on her computer so that we can get all of our pictures and crap off.

Classic Theme - Works Completely?

Sep 2, 2008

I'm still using XP and I always use the classic style.

Recently, I've been thinking about switching to Vista 64 someday, but I've got a question about the classic theme:

I know that the theme is available, but does it give me complete access to all the functions available? I think I heard somewhere that some things won't work properly because Vista's GUI just differs very much from the older ones, and so there are functions that are not accessible anymore.

Is that true? Can the use of the classic theme really narrow my set of functionalities?

I'm not a novice computer user so please don't tell me I might have mistaken sleep, hibernate with SHUT DOWN.
