So I have been testing Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1 for a week now to see if Vista is ready for primetime. I almost ironed out all bugs that was holding me back from switching from winxp. All except one. I can't make Vista shut down completely. It seems to turn off, but all fans keep spinning. No matter how long I wait. I'm not a novice computer user so please don't tell me I might have mistaken sleep, hibernate with SHUT DOWN.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to delete my browsing history completely from a pc. I had done all the usual, tools, internet options & delete. I have also used the Vista search function and found a couple of folders containing relevant material and deleted those. I have deleted the cookies manually by unhiding the directory and sniping those out. HOWEVER, if I type the name of a site into the VISTA search - a string of references appear above - as if they are still in the browing history - but they are not as I have deleted them. Is there some other reference I need to delete somewhere? perhaps some sort of shadow directory structure? The references appear as http// etc above - but these do not lead anywhere if I click on them. They must be embedded in some some sort of script somewhere.

Thanks to a guru here in this forum, he told me to enter into System/Advanced/Performance Settings/.../Virtual Memory Change, and check the “Automatically manage paging file size”. The error reporting stopped, everything OK so far. However, after that moment my Vista uses extremely long time to shut down, up to 2 minutes. No error reports, nothing wrong as far as I can see, my Vista works perfectly well, and has a very quick start up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis never happened for a couple of days but as I started updating Vista, the Blue Screen Error has been occurring. the Problems Center in Vista advised me to update to SP1 because it said that this issue has been resolved in the latest service pack. After updating, the problem is still here. When i boot Vista up its normal, and operates perfectly. I am concerned that Vista is not taking advantage of my RAM. I have searched high and low for an answer, but all I find are posts by people complaining that Vista uses all their RAM, and the obvious responses that Vista _should_ use all their RAM. My problem is that I have a 64-bit system with 8 GB of RAM, and Vista only ever seems to use about 2.5 GB of it. I notice quite slow performance, for example, when I use Firefox with 80 tabs or so, but RAM usage is still relatively low. Of course my pagefile.sys is always an 8 GB file when I check. How can I make Vista use all of my RAM? I should be getting better performance.

I have a USB Logitech mouse. For reasons too lengthy to get into here, I want to hook it up via PS2.
So, I hooked it up with an adaptor. On bootup, the computer appears to recognize the mouse, as PS2 detection is enabled in the BIOS and the mouse's red light comes on.
However, when I get to my login page of Vista, the mouse doesn't work to control the pointer, and the red light is off. Even when I used the keyboard to just hit enter and log in as the "guest," the pointer will not respond when I got to the desktop.
Do I need to 'activate' the PS2 in Vista somehow?
I'm one of those users who has been using Vista with no problems ever since Microsoft gave out RTM copies to beta testers. However, as a writer, I've watched the media completely destroy the public opinion of Vista, leading many to stick with Windows XP or to look for alternatives, even before they had tried Vista. Even with SP1 out, many have not bothered trying Vista on recent hardware and therefore could not realize the fact that it really is worthy of being XP's successor. If I had to lay the blame on one party for Vista's poor public opinion, I wouldn't lay it on Microsoft, I wouldn't lay it on hardware companies incapable of producing good drivers, I wouldn't lay it on the fact that XP is so good, I would lay it on the media for blowing things out of proportions.
Yes, the problem is exaggeration (it's in this article's title too, in case you missed it); bloggers and journalists alike use their personal experiences to prove their point in their writing. The blame doesn't solely lie with us, as Vista was by no means perfect, but we did manage to amplify the problems beyond reason. And if the beta is anything to go by, Windows 7 is going to fly. i recently bought a pc system with vista home premium already installed, av got no disks relating to vista with my system. iam planning to upgrade the emory,processor and graphics card but frightened if i do this will i lose vista when i connect the system back up? or how can a make a copy of my vista and put it on a disk??

Is that something that would allow me to enter a 'contact' and have it appear in all 3 email programs or will I have to type them in individually into each? $1200 is a 'big' investment for me, on a 'set' income. Tired of getting 'into' something ONLY to find it is a 'sales pitch'. I should NOT have to 'buy' additional programs to make VISTA run...that is something that Microsoft should provide somehow! I have gone back and fourth with apple and compaq to try and resolve the problem but i just keep getting the run around. I have (for years) used MSN Premium software as my email program. Now, it seems I can't make this my default email program with Vista. I am going nuts! I have spoken to MSN support who tell me to do the same things over and over. I have also spoken to Microsoft support who told me I have to use Outlook or Windows Live mail instead.
It's really hard. I have taught my elderly parents how to use the MSN software and now we have to change - or do we? I've tried the email settings in MSN itself, I've tried associations for programs in Vista and also the default programs. Nothing is working. Surely, one Microsoft program should work with another? We pay for this software so that we can also have sub accounts on our email more storage than the usual hotmail space.

I know that I can change existing Registry entries & add new entries to make Vista more secure. When one makes a change to a policy editor, in what file is the change stored? Or is it stored in the Registry? If policy editor changes are stored in the Registry, then one really doesn't need to upgrade to Ultimate or have a PC with Ultimate. So, ultimately (no pun intended) can one use the Registry to make Home Premium as secure as (or possibly more secure than) Ultimate & achieve the same results as one who has Ultimate?

Now when I boot up my computer, it will boot up and then it will completely shutdown and restart again. When it shuts down, it gives me a blue screen and then says "Windows has been shut down to prevernt damage to your computer. bad_pool_reader". I can boot up in safe mode, but if I try to boot it up regularly, then this cycle happens all over again. What do I need to do to fix the problem (preferabbly without having to reinstall Windows/deleting all of my information on the computer)?
View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently, after an unsuccessful attempt to upgrade to Windows 7, my reinstalled Vista Home Premium 64bit, after operating normally for a while, lost sound completely. I cannot pinpoint the event that prompted this malfunction and instead of trying to toubleshoot the onboard Realtek High Definition Audio, I installed a Diamond Xreme Sound 5.1 card running a C-Media Electronic driver ver. 6.12.8.1737, which is the latest for this sound card. The sound card worked fine, after a restart, producing rich sound via Logitech's X-210 2-speaker-plus subwoofer system. As long as I kept the system on Sleep, the sound worked fine. As soon as I turned the computer off for the night last night, the system reloaded with no sound playing whatsoever.
I have disabled the onboard Realtek High Definition Audio under Device Manager as well as the ATI High Definition Audio Device that appeared after I installed a Gigabyte HD 5770 graphics card BEFORE I installed the sound card. The only active audio devices now are the C-Media PCI Audio Device (Diamond sound card) and the Logitech Mic QuickCam S7500. Under Sound in the Control Panel, the only playback device is Speakers that are checked and are reported OK by the system as part of the Diamond sound card. Under Recording, the following devices appear: C-Media Microphone currently unavailable Line-In C-Media Audio Device (speakers) checked and working C-Media Aux device currently unavailable C-Media CD player currently unavailable C-Media Stereo Mix currently unavailable C-Media Wave currently unavailable Logitech Mic Working Under Sounds Play Windows Startup sound is checked. After installing the latest C-Media driver and restarting the computer, I receive faint sound from one of the Logitech speakers with volume turned to 100 pc. But no stereo, strong sound....!
