I figured out why some of my files weren't turning up in search, it was because they weren't indexed. These were mostly some of my .mp3s I've downloaded from the internet or ripped from a CD. So I'm wondering, why are some of my .mp3s automatically indexed the way they're suppose to be and some aren't? Also, is there an easier way to find out which files aren't indexed rather than having to check it in properties for each file? That takes a long time...
I have now found out about the search you can do with Windows key + F, but I was wondering where that program is that the shortcut starts. Is it possible to make another shortcut that would just be on the desktop to the same search program, so you would only need to click on the shortcut on the desktop?
Also, is it possible to set a default so the search program would also search the non-indexed files, instead of going to the advanced screen and having to check the box? Or does Vista want to require you to have indexing on for every drive?
my understaning is that you can back up the contents of the Windows Live Mail folder to back up your email. (ie, you can later copy that back into your Windows Live Mail folder to restore) But it seems doing so borks the Vista indexer. For example, if I:
1) back up my Windows Live Mail folder
2) load a "clean" Vista image back onto the PC
3) copy the backup into the Windows Live Mail folder
When I do this, the contents of the Windows Live Mail folder are no longer included in the Vista index. Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn't the restored copy have the same index behavior?
I have Vista running in dual boot mode on a C2D 2.0ghz laptop (2 gigs ram). I usually run in XP as it seems to be much faster. Are there tweaks I can do to make Vista run with the same amount of get up & go?
I just migrated from a Win98 system to Vista Home Premium. All new hardware. In Win98 I had to delete the .tmp files every week before I backed up. I can't find the .tmp files in Vista. Can someone tell me where they are & do I need to clean them out.
have a Sony Vaio VGCLT16E, sometimes when i am typing fast (and using the delete and backspace keys because i am not a very good typist) my key board stops responding and the keyboard LCD window flashes on and off...could this mean i have hit a key combination that affects the keyboard during my sloppy typing, and if so, what beside re-booting can i do next time...yes, i will try to slow down.
I would like to locate all the files in my User account (Documents folder, etc.) that are over a year old--so I can decide if I want to just delete them.
I had some pictures in a folder, and as they were private photos I didn't want anyone else to see, I had decided to hide them, because I didn't know how to password protect them. They were in the pictures section of "My Computer," and now when I go to look at the pictures, I can't find them, and don't know how to get them back.
I have my favorites in alpha order but like to drag a couple to the top of the list but I can only drag it to the top of what appears to be a full page of Favorites, then I have to use the up arrow to move the top item to the bottom of the page and then again and again, I drag the Favorite to be moved, page after page. I have to keep an eye on it to locate it again for the next drag for the length of one page only. Can it be dragged to the top of the list immediately?
We need to run one of our large 16bit Visual Basic 3.0 applications on Vista Ultimate (32bit) while we rewrite the app in VB .Net. So far I have been able to install the VB3 app, and even the VB3 dev, on Vista and with a few small changes all runs well except for printing from the VB app. We use the VB PrintForm command to print a screen image from the app. All works well under Windows XP but under Vista nothing prints. Watching the Print Queue for the default printer, a job starts then quickly disappears from the queue with nothing printed.
The VB3 app can see the printer and the printer properties OK using Printer Setup (Common Dialog VBX). Printing works fine from Word 2003 and other 32 bit apps on the PC. I have tried several printers, all work OK under Vista except for the 16 bit apps. I have tried running the app as Admin and changing compatibilty properties. Does Vista support any printing from 16 bit apps?
I use a laptop w/ vista business in my work truck. As i have traveled around for the last 7 months with it on its stand in the front seat it has connected to over 800 wireless networks. How do I remove these wireless networks QUICKLY (1 at time is going to take hours!:mad How do I prevent VISTA from automatically connecting to any networks without asking me 1st?
I have a question. The information tag that pops up when you mouse over an item in windows quickly disappears when you first directly mouse over the file or folder and will reappear for as long as you want it to if you point near the bottom of the selected item. Is this a normal thing or a bug in Vista? Has anyone else ever noticed this? Sorry for the explanation, I don't know of any other way to put it. Is there a Tutorial for this?
I have backup software on my computer that backs up to an off-sitelocation.I had some questions about how well it was or wasn't functioning, and I attempted to send the tech a copy of the data log as an attachment to my email to him.However, after I attach it to the email, when I try to send it I get a pop-up that says, "Some of the files could not be found, and could not be attached to the message. Would you like to send the message anyway?" What is causing this problem? As far as I can tell, I do not have the file opened when I'm trying to send the email. (I sent the log anyway by copying it and pasting it into a Word document, and then attaching that to my email.)
I put some files from my computer as annexes to a message. But when I order to send it a message says that they could not find those files and asking if I wish to send message without them. what to do to send the message with those files
Court hearings are recorded in .wav files we can get copies of on CDs. But we can't find a program that plays them. The whole codec thing is over my head and more trouble than I want to deal with. Is it a Vista thing? Are wav files no longer compatible? The old recorder program used to record and play them. I can't find anything that simple anymore.
What happened to the viewed files history? It used to be (in XP) that if you opened, say, My Computer, and pressed ctrl+h, you would see all the files you had looked at using windows explorer. Now, the internet explorer history works perfectly fine, but for the life of me I cannot find this file history on vista.

I watch this for many years, and long time before I analyzed this to see, whether my release of the cap key is delayed. It was not, sure, but I don't fret about. Now, with Gigahertz CPU and Vista, perhaps there is a way to adjust this behavior.
I am thinking of rebuilding the search index. I have noticed that the search function does not find files I know are there. I think I know how to do it, and I gather it will take a long time.
I recently upgraded from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows Vista Ultimate. While running the Disk Cleanup utility, listed under "files to delete:" was an unchecked box "Files discarded by Windows upgrade 1.34GB". The description box below states: "Files from a previous Windows installation. As a precaution, Windows upgrade keeps a copy of any files that were not moved to the new version of Windows and were not identified as Windows system files. If you are sure that no user's personal files are missing after the upgrade, you can delete these files." My question: How do I find these files so I can decide if I wish to delete or not?

My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.).
The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important.
when i use media center on vista prem and open folders with music and video the center says that the folders are empty, but these folders are not empty and the files can be played with media player 11....anyone know what's up with this????????
ive been having problems with the tilde key on my Asus laptop. at first it was that it didint work at all, in games, in microsoft works, or notepad. i went searching online and disabled the driver for the eHome ir receiver (even though i dont own an ir receivers). after that i was able to use the tild key only outside of games. but heres the strange part, if i press the tild key quickly as if i were typing normaly, it dose not register. in order to use it i have to hold down the tilde key for about 1-2 seconds before it would spit out a stream of "````````````". then i could delete up to the first one. this is true for the laptops keyboard, and a wired dell keyboard i connected using usb.........

"so my question is , where can i get the "dos boot up files" for vista64? with the hp tool i need to locate the dos boot file address . so how do i do that? do i have to download vista64 boot files? every google links explains how to do this with xp. couldnt find any for vista. makes me feel like im the only person on the planet using vista.
I have a simple text file with a certain word in it. I try to find this text file, but vista won't find it. Windows 2000, linked by network, finds it within a second. I have tried all available options.
It just doesn't work. Why is there not a simple search function that actually works like in windows2000? I am using Vista Ultimate 64 bit. But not having a working search function doesn't look that "ultimate" to me.
I'm using Vista Home Premium - I generally use Outlook 2007 for my e-mail and organising but recently went to Windows Mail to find a Newsgroup (unavailable in Outlook). However, no Newgroups were visible. Unable to find a way to find them I clicked on "Help" and the advice includes "Click the Tools menu, and then click Newsgroups." However, there is no "Newsgroups" option in the Tools menu that displays. The Windows Mail I have is version 6.0.6000....
