Find Year Old Files?
May 15, 2010I would like to locate all the files in my User account (Documents folder, etc.) that are over a year old--so I can decide if I want to just delete them.

These were mostly some of my .mp3s I've downloaded from the internet or ripped from a CD. So I'm wondering, why are some of my .mp3s automatically indexed the way they're suppose to be and some aren't? Also, is there an easier way to find out which files aren't indexed rather than having to check it in properties for each file? That takes a long time...

Feb 9, 2009I have backup software on my computer that backs up to an off-sitelocation.I had some questions about how well it was or wasn't functioning, and I attempted to send the tech a copy of the data log as an attachment to my email to him.However, after I attach it to the email, when I try to send it I get a pop-up that says, "Some of the files could not be found, and could not be attached to the message. Would you like to send the message anyway?" What is causing this problem? As far as I can tell, I do not have the
file opened when I'm trying to send the email. (I sent the log anyway by copying it and pasting it into a Word document, and then attaching that to my email.)

The whole codec thing is over my head and more trouble than I want to deal with. Is it a Vista thing? Are wav files no longer compatible? The old recorder program used to record and play them. Mar 23, 2008I recently upgraded from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows Vista Ultimate. While running the Disk Cleanup utility, listed under "files to delete:" was an unchecked box "Files discarded by Windows upgrade 1.34GB". The description box below states: "Files from a previous Windows installation. As a precaution, Windows upgrade keeps a copy of any files that were not moved to the new version of Windows and were not identified as Windows system files. If you are sure that no user's personal files are missing after the upgrade, you can delete these files." My question: How do I find these files so I can decide if I wish to delete or not?

Nov 22, 2009My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.).
The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important.

Aug 26, 2009I purchased a new PC in early 2007 that came with XP. A month or so later I received the Vista upgrade CD which I have never installed. I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.

Mar 23, 2008I have a simple text file with a certain word in it. I try to find this text file, but vista won't find it. Windows 2000, linked by network, finds it within a second.
I have tried all available options.
"include non-indexed"
"always search file names and contents"
"find partial matches"
"include subfolders"
etc
etc
It just doesn't work. Why is there not a simple search function that actually works like in windows2000? I am using Vista Ultimate 64 bit. But not having a working search function doesn't look that "ultimate" to me.

However, no Newgroups were visible. Unable to find a way to find them I clicked on "Help" and the advice includes "Click the Tools menu, and then click Newsgroups." However, there is no "Newsgroups" option in the Tools menu that displays. The Windows Mail I have is version 6.0.6000....

Jul 14, 2009While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

Aug 27, 2008I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I have a folder on my desktop named Downloads that I use for, shockingly, downloads. Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!
I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

May 8, 2009A multitude of files, folders and sub-folders have disappeared (all from my "Documents"). Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:
- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........
