DVD-drive Doesn't Read Disc's
Apr 18, 2009
my DVD-drive doesn't read disc's. The drive I'm using is TSSTcorp SH-S223Q ATA, so a Samsung DVD-drive. When I bought it, it read fine, but not anymore. It doesn't read even bootable disc's (I tried Vista Ultimate x64). I've tried upgrading firmware from B00 to B03, but it didn't help. I had a similar problem when I bought this computer in August 2008. My DVD-drive read the disc's fine for couple weeks or so and then it stopped working. Then I replaced it with this drive (It's not the same model). This one worked fine for a month or two and stopped working, so it's been couple of months not functioning. I just did a fresh install of Vista yesterday and the problem is still here.

I have a strange problem and I cannot find the same issue anywhere on the net.I just bought the components for a new computer and along with it a OEM copy of Visa Home premium 64bit. When I put everything together i booted the computer and it asked me to boot from cd/dvd obviously as I had no OS installed. I installed my brand new Vista disc and nothing happened and then said it had failed to boot from the disc. After a few attempts I thought i would try with my XP dvd and I had no problems at all. I figured I would roll with the install on XP and then try the Vista disc as an upgrade. My computer will not detect the Vista disc in the machine. I cannot explore the disc, run it etc. My obvious though would be that it was a bad disc yet it runs fine on my laptop (which already has a version of vista installed on it) I then proceeded to install a different DVD writer / reader and there is exactly the same problem. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this and if there is anything I can do, to not be able to even read the contents of the disc is just weird! Incidentally I can view and run other CD's and DVD's that I have tried this seems very specific to the vista DVD

After doing a bit of homework and finding literally thousands of posts scatterd across the web, and having a very annoying hang up call with an intern at MS,
I suppose I am chasing a moot point, however here's the deal. I run a small lighting and sound company. I have 8 different computers configured for different things as far as shows are concerned. Just built 2 biostar TA780g rigs with ati dual x850 cards. AMD4600x2 for a cpu, ram at 4gig. Vista 32 "ultimate" sp1. These are to replace some older socket a stuff and none of them do games but we DO extensive 3d video displays at theaters, live band venues and so on. Too many problems with intel, nvidia and our apps, so we are all amd / ati here.
Yesterday while managing some fresh mp3 rips with a program called Tagscanner, which I have used for years, got a bsod, and when everything came back all was well except that Vista changed everything to read only. we are talking about over 300,000 assorted mp3's,music video files, Karaoke cdg files, and xml lighting scene files that i can no longer do anything with spread across four harddrives. since the software apps we use make extensive use of the write-rewrite xmls constantly, now two of our apps lockup on startup. I would not even be here except that the 780g chipset and nvidia geforce 8 and up require dx10 to function at full potential.
So my questions:
1. Does anyone know anything about regaining control over disc management properties in vista?
2. ive heard rumors that there are ways of getting dx10 to run on xp, and it's still in its experimental stages. ANY GOOD info on that would be welcome- two sites i hit last night got me some nice trojans. But if it is real, I am sooooo back to ................

I'm messing around with this motherboard my dad had RMA'd to see if I can turn it into a usuable computer. Works fine but the one thing that's got me perplexed is the DVD drives plugged into it. The DVD writer seems to "read when it wants to", which is really weird. A lot of the time, it just won't read anything but sometimes it does read discs (I even burnt a disc using it). The drive is there in Windows Explorer and the BIOS also catches it but I can't get it to boot from the DVD drive (but it DID boot once so I managed to install Windows from it). In Windows I put discs in and it makes no attempt to read them...unless it suddenly WANTS to read them and then does. Does this make any sense? A drive almost literally reading discs when it feels like it wants to read them.

If i put any memory device in, it says i must format the disk before i can use it...but I have alot of information on them and its pointless to delete information that i want to see. If i click on the properties of the disk it says i have 0% unused information. I turned auto play off and even uninstalled ROXIO. With ROXIO deleted, the cd drive now says i must insert a disk but there is already one in there. The other drives still say the same as they did before ROXIO was deleted. This problem started off as the cd drive only messing up sometimes. Then it stopped working completely. Within a few weeks i couldnt use any of the drives. Ive tried many diagnostic tests and no luck.

I have a problem with a USB flash drive I have had for quite a while, that Windows Vista insists all the files and folders on it are read-only. I can create a new directory on the drive, but not rename it, and I can copy files onto the drive, but not delete them from the drive. I have found no way to correct the problem. For example if I look at the properties of folder on the drive and uncheck the "read only" checkbox, it does it, but is read-only the next time I try to use it. Does anyone know the source of this curious behaviour (which a few other people have also reported) and how to fix it?

I recently purchased a hp laptop running Vista Home Premium. I've been quite pleased, but have a minor issue with the read only permissions. While trying to move a file in an .iso image on a virtual drive, Vista said it needed permission to preform the action. I clicked the allow button, and it seemed to continue, only to tell me moments later that I needed permission. I looked into the issue, and discovered that the folders were both read-only, an attribute I've tried to remove several times. Any ideas? And yes, I am logged in as the admin.

im trying to regain write-access to an external hard drive which, after a reboot, Vista decided it would no longer let me write anything to...(worth repeating, i didnt change any setting in order for this to happen, i just rebooted!) In an earlier question on this issue someone suggested the followin The problem is that i cannot finally get the permissions back to normal following these steps. At the last "click on the OK button" i get an alert telling me various files are read only (Vista alerts to one file at a time, obviously) and therefore is unable to make the required changes.

I have Home Premium 64-bits, installed one month ago and never tried this until now. When I insert a blank DVD or CD, it doesn't show anything and then I got to My Computer and double click the DVD icon and I get the message that "Windows can not read the disk on drive D:" or something like that. So I went to the manufacturer site and downloaded firmware, updated, rebooted and still having the same issue. However I can read used disks, and I can burn perfectly using third party burning software. What is going on?

I have had this Pavillion dv6305tx laptop just 2 months and after a short while the disc almost full message popped up, it is a 160gb HDD with vista ultimate 64 bit os. Strange because I had not installed any new programs. I phoned the HP line (India) and was told to re format the HDD. This I did but now I have the same message again. I have not istalled anything and the add/remove programs tells me I have less than 2gb of programs installed. The HDD seems to be filling up in its own and I cannot work it out. I think it is a setting in vista but don't know wher to start. The problem is not with the recovery partition D.

I am having a quirky issue with my DVD drive and hopefully someone will know where to start. It seems that the drive will read CDs (opening them in iTunes) and music DVDs (playing in Mplayer), but the system completely hangs and freezes when trying to load a data disc. Specifically, the system will continually try and open the DVD (spinning away) and cause serious lag to the computer. When trying to eject the DVD, it will then cause the computer to freeze and require a reboot.
The data discs that I'm using are all programs that I've previously loaded on my XP install, so I know the discs aren't corrupt. I'm also running a 32 bit version of Vista, so I'm not worried about 64 bit compatibility issues. The drive is a Lite-on (DH-20A4P) IDE based drive, set as Master on the cable. There are no other devices hooked to the IDE cable, and the cable is also brand new (came with motherboard). Here's the steps I've taken thus far to diagnose the problem -- with no fixes working.
- Downloaded and installed newest drivers for the DVD drive
- Flashed the DVD drive firmware with most current version
- Uninstalled then reinstalled DVD drive through Device Manager
- Disabled autorun feature
- Checked connections from drive to motherboard
The drive obviously is working properly since I'm able to play CDs and DVD movies/music. It might be worth noting that I used this same drive to install Vista, but perhaps the updates horked my drive? I'm thinking this is a Vista software issue, but can't think of anything else to try. I'm also hesitant to wipe and reinstall Vista for such a small issue.

I just got a new HP desktop with 64bit Home Premium. My external, which I loaded from my Dell laptop (with Windows XP), now is all read-only. (The read only box is filled, rather than checked.) I cannot modify any files in he drive, but can access them all. I have already tried the following proposed fixes with no success:
- Right-click on drive; properties; tools tab; check now; unchecked both boxes and started and completed the check with no errors
- Changed drive ownership to administrator
- Changed drive ownership to my personal account
After each of these I tried to clear the read-only box, but the files still can't be modified, and the filled box is back when I re-open the properties on folders inside the drive.

Hard drive died, replaced, reloaded Vista Premium x64. I can read the files on the bad hard drive, have attached as an external drive and want to transfer all Windows Mail files to the new hard drive and then restart Windows Mail. Is this possible? Can all files be transferred? The files and folders are in (user name)/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail. Can I just replace the Windows Mail folder with the folder from the old drive? Are there additional files that will need to be copied?

I'm working on a Gateway LX 6810-01 and he completley reformatted his hard drive. He ordered some factory discs to restore to factory settings but when it loads it up it just hangs.
I made a vista 64 recovery disc and it loads up.. When it does it asks for the Dvd/cd Rom driver.
The device is a HL - DT - ST DVDRAM GH15F SCSI Cdrom Device
It lets me serach for it and flash drive is an option and I have one handy, however I can't just find the driver I need and put it on this flash drive for the computer I'm working on.

I posted this a couple of months back: I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 and my DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. I tried it with various CDs and DVDs and it never detects anything. So I went to the Device Manager and this is what it says: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA cannot start (Code 10)." But while the solution kind of worked, it's still not playing the DVDs everytime. First, it doesn't always eject the disc. The only way I can ALWAYS get it out is during restart, or using a paperclip. Second, even if I take the disc out, the computer still tells me it's there (it displays the disc name too...). And worst of all, if the disc is in, it displays the disc name and I click on it, it doesn't load anything most of the time. Unless I restart it, take the disc out at that time and then put it in (and that's not guaranteed to work either).

First disclaimer... I'me really a network novice. I've used XXCOPY and Robocopy to successfully back up entire volumes to an eSATA connected drive, but when I try to do the same to a newly acquired NAS drive, it doesn't work right. Instead of copying "only" the files that are new (or changed since the last backup), Robocopy copies every file over again. And XXCOPY (free version) won't copy at all to the NAS drive. I downloaded the 60day trial of XXCOPY home, and it does work right, (except it recopies lots of zipped files) but XXCOPY home costs $40. Here's a typical command (from a batch file) for each: Robocopy E: \DLINKVolume_1E-BACKUP /MIR /R:1 /W:1 and xxcopy e: \dlinkvolume_1e-backup /clone/ff I also found RichCopy, which I tried, and find it also copies files that are already in place on the NAS drive. Could it be that I have a problem with the way I've set up the NAS? I'm probably overlooking something basic,

This seems to be common—the optical drive doesn't work. I'd like to detail more symptoms, though, that might help form a real fix for those whom the solution at The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista wouldn't work, as it didn't for me (Upperfilter and Lowerfilter values don't exist in my registry).
Upon a clean installation of Vista, the optical drive works fine. After installing the whole slew of current updates, it stops working. I didn't figure this was a thread for the Windows Updates forum, though. When putting in a disc, the drive goes to work (illuminated busy light and the sound of the drive spinning) for a bit, then turns off and on continuously, freezing the computer until the disc is ejected. A disc left in the drive upon start-up will work correctly. Once I open the drive, however, that's when it no longer works, whether I load the same or different disc. So my question is, is there a way to fix this? Other solutions, like uninstalling the drive in the device manager and rebooting, haven't worked for me.
