External Drive Suddenly Read-only
Feb 6, 2009
im trying to regain write-access to an external hard drive which, after a reboot, Vista decided it would no longer let me write anything to...(worth repeating, i didnt change any setting in order for this to happen, i just rebooted!) In an earlier question on this issue someone suggested the followin The problem is that i cannot finally get the permissions back to normal following these steps. At the last "click on the OK button" i get an alert telling me various files are read only (Vista alerts to one file at a time, obviously) and therefore is unable to make the required changes.

I just got a new HP desktop with 64bit Home Premium. My external, which I loaded from my Dell laptop (with Windows XP), now is all read-only. (The read only box is filled, rather than checked.) I cannot modify any files in he drive, but can access them all. I have already tried the following proposed fixes with no success:
- Right-click on drive; properties; tools tab; check now; unchecked both boxes and started and completed the check with no errors
- Changed drive ownership to administrator
- Changed drive ownership to my personal account
After each of these I tried to clear the read-only box, but the files still can't be modified, and the filled box is back when I re-open the properties on folders inside the drive.

I was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!
The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......

I just bought and installed a external hard drive. I am fairly knowlegable about computers but this is my first Ex. Hard drive and know very little about there use. So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? I saved it to a DVD one time but when the time came when I needed it all that was there was a short cut but no files.

I just used Windows Vista to back up my drive to an external drive. It said the backup was successful but when I went to safely remove hardware, I got this message: " Windows can't stop your Generic volume device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. "I made sure everything was closed, checked with Task Manager and tried again. Same message. After 20 minutes, I finally just disconnected it.

I'm messing around with this motherboard my dad had RMA'd to see if I can turn it into a usuable computer. Works fine but the one thing that's got me perplexed is the DVD drives plugged into it. The DVD writer seems to "read when it wants to", which is really weird. A lot of the time, it just won't read anything but sometimes it does read discs (I even burnt a disc using it). The drive is there in Windows Explorer and the BIOS also catches it but I can't get it to boot from the DVD drive (but it DID boot once so I managed to install Windows from it). In Windows I put discs in and it makes no attempt to read them...unless it suddenly WANTS to read them and then does. Does this make any sense? A drive almost literally reading discs when it feels like it wants to read them.

If i put any memory device in, it says i must format the disk before i can use it...but I have alot of information on them and its pointless to delete information that i want to see. If i click on the properties of the disk it says i have 0% unused information. I turned auto play off and even uninstalled ROXIO. With ROXIO deleted, the cd drive now says i must insert a disk but there is already one in there. The other drives still say the same as they did before ROXIO was deleted. This problem started off as the cd drive only messing up sometimes. Then it stopped working completely. Within a few weeks i couldnt use any of the drives. Ive tried many diagnostic tests and no luck.

I have a problem with a USB flash drive I have had for quite a while, that Windows Vista insists all the files and folders on it are read-only. I can create a new directory on the drive, but not rename it, and I can copy files onto the drive, but not delete them from the drive. I have found no way to correct the problem. For example if I look at the properties of folder on the drive and uncheck the "read only" checkbox, it does it, but is read-only the next time I try to use it. Does anyone know the source of this curious behaviour (which a few other people have also reported) and how to fix it?

I recently purchased a hp laptop running Vista Home Premium. I've been quite pleased, but have a minor issue with the read only permissions. While trying to move a file in an .iso image on a virtual drive, Vista said it needed permission to preform the action. I clicked the allow button, and it seemed to continue, only to tell me moments later that I needed permission. I looked into the issue, and discovered that the folders were both read-only, an attribute I've tried to remove several times. Any ideas? And yes, I am logged in as the admin.

my DVD-drive doesn't read disc's. The drive I'm using is TSSTcorp SH-S223Q ATA, so a Samsung DVD-drive. When I bought it, it read fine, but not anymore. It doesn't read even bootable disc's (I tried Vista Ultimate x64). I've tried upgrading firmware from B00 to B03, but it didn't help. I had a similar problem when I bought this computer in August 2008. My DVD-drive read the disc's fine for couple weeks or so and then it stopped working. Then I replaced it with this drive (It's not the same model). This one worked fine for a month or two and stopped working, so it's been couple of months not functioning. I just did a fresh install of Vista yesterday and the problem is still here.

I have Home Premium 64-bits, installed one month ago and never tried this until now. When I insert a blank DVD or CD, it doesn't show anything and then I got to My Computer and double click the DVD icon and I get the message that "Windows can not read the disk on drive D:" or something like that. So I went to the manufacturer site and downloaded firmware, updated, rebooted and still having the same issue. However I can read used disks, and I can burn perfectly using third party burning software. What is going on?

I am having a quirky issue with my DVD drive and hopefully someone will know where to start. It seems that the drive will read CDs (opening them in iTunes) and music DVDs (playing in Mplayer), but the system completely hangs and freezes when trying to load a data disc. Specifically, the system will continually try and open the DVD (spinning away) and cause serious lag to the computer. When trying to eject the DVD, it will then cause the computer to freeze and require a reboot.
The data discs that I'm using are all programs that I've previously loaded on my XP install, so I know the discs aren't corrupt. I'm also running a 32 bit version of Vista, so I'm not worried about 64 bit compatibility issues. The drive is a Lite-on (DH-20A4P) IDE based drive, set as Master on the cable. There are no other devices hooked to the IDE cable, and the cable is also brand new (came with motherboard). Here's the steps I've taken thus far to diagnose the problem -- with no fixes working.
- Downloaded and installed newest drivers for the DVD drive
- Flashed the DVD drive firmware with most current version
- Uninstalled then reinstalled DVD drive through Device Manager
- Disabled autorun feature
- Checked connections from drive to motherboard
The drive obviously is working properly since I'm able to play CDs and DVD movies/music. It might be worth noting that I used this same drive to install Vista, but perhaps the updates horked my drive? I'm thinking this is a Vista software issue, but can't think of anything else to try. I'm also hesitant to wipe and reinstall Vista for such a small issue.

I have Windows XP and Vista. I always go through "safely remove hardware" before pulling off USB drive on XP. However, I have been trying to do the same on Vista, it seems that I cannot do the same as XP. For instance, I plug in my USB on Vista and it appears as H drive on Vista, when I am ready to do "safely remove hardware", I don't see the device drive H is on the "Safely remove hardware" window, so I cannot stop the H drive. I am concerned about the Vista hardware.

Hard drive died, replaced, reloaded Vista Premium x64. I can read the files on the bad hard drive, have attached as an external drive and want to transfer all Windows Mail files to the new hard drive and then restart Windows Mail. Is this possible? Can all files be transferred? The files and folders are in (user name)/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail. Can I just replace the Windows Mail folder with the folder from the old drive? Are there additional files that will need to be copied?

I recently bought a western digital 1TB hard drive which I had to reformat before I could use. Everything works good now, except for onething. Sometimes the computer doesn't want to restart while the new drive is plugged in. If I remove it from the USB port prior to restarting, it will restart just fine.
It shuts down and turns on without an issue. This only happens when I
restart the system with it plugged in.
So while it's not a big issue,it is an annoyance.

I got a large external hard drive today and it's instructions say to go to
disk management and do format and partition. I messed up and deleted the
drives volume. Now it is not listed in disk management. I looked everywhere
to get it back and can't figure it out. How do I make Vista recognize this
drive again so I can partition and format it?

For some reason, It's unable to either normally format any external memory devices into a FAT or FAT32 format, or unable to read it at all. I keep trying to open the device but it keeps saying that i need to format it, but because of problem 1, it can't be formated (it almost completes but the process shuts down, stating that it can't be formated). This problem has been happening for the longest time and I really need this fixed.
When I say external memory devices, i mean CDs, DVDs, Flash drives, SD cards, memory card readers. Everytime I check the disk management of these devices, it says they are Primary Partitioned (which is the normal status right?). And the only thing that seems to be the problem is the RAW file system (which I heard windows doesn't read). However, the wierd thing is if I plug in something like a USB mouse, or a camera, it has full functionality (I.E. the mouse works/files are reachable on the camera). I then tried to format it using the cmd lines, and tried to format it to FAT32, but after it says 100% formated, and i try to use it again, Disk Management tells me that it's back in RAW format.

I am in need of assistance concerning my external hard drive. My hard drive has been working flawlessly for the past 3 years. As of today, my computer no longer recognizes it. This is what I have done so far:
-Unplugged it, plugged it back up, and my computer made a chime saying that it was recognized and said that it was ready to go.
-However, the HDD does not show up on the my computer tab.
-I removed the HDD from its enclosure, purchased a USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE and tried uploading the HDD to my wife's computer. Once again, her computer chimed saying that it was recognized (she runs XP, i have vista), but, once again, the hard drive was not in the my computer folder.
-I then proceeded to Computer Management, Disk Management, and noticed that my external hard drive is not there either.
I thought that maybe intially my power cord to the outlet in the wall just went bad, but after I bought the USB to SATA/IDE adapter and it still didn't work...well, I ran out of options.
